Philadelphia – As much as Dan Uggla has struggled for the past two months, he’s been making some progress of late and that’s part of the reason why manager Fredi Gonzalez said he sat Uggla Tuesday night against the Phillies.
Uggla is 8-for-55 (.145) with 18 strikeouts, as well as two doubles and two home runs in his career against Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels.
“I thought he’s had some great at-bats,” Gonzalez said. “I don’t want Hamels to mess him up….It’s like having good at-bats then facing a knuckleballer. It may screw you up for a while.”
Reed Johnson got the start in left field and Martin Prado made his third start of the season at second base.
Uggla, who’s hitting .212 on the season, has eight hits and eight RBIs in his past nine games. He hit .235 (8-for-34) in that time but with five doubles, and the way this season has gone, it’s something to build on.
Uggla went 2-for-4 against the Phillies Monday night for only his second multi-hit game in his past 51 games. He’s hitting .136 (23-for-169) since his four-hit game in Miami on June 5. He has only two home runs and 17 RBIs in that time.
“It’s been a grind to be me,” Uggla acknowledged. “Even when I’ve struggled in the past, I’m still hitting homers and driving people in.”
This is Uggla’s fourth time out of the lineup this season. He typically puts up a fuss with Gonzalez, though Gonzalez said Uggla took it a little better when he told him before Monday’s game.
Uggla couldn’t resist asking Gonzalez after his two-hit game Monday if he’d changed his mind, but he can also see the benefit of clearing his head.
“(You) can let your mind be at ease and relax and let all the stress roll off your back,” Uggla said.
Gonzalez said Uggla’s made some progress working with hitting coach Greg Walker on getting his front foot down faster to improve his timing at the plate.
“I’m a rhythm hitter, a timing hitter,” Uggla said. “(If) my timing is off, then I’m going to be doing what I’ve been doing the last couple months. Once my timing is on, then everything kind of flows. For whatever reason I’ve had the hardest time just getting on time.”

I am no hater of DU, but it has been hard to understand this year. Last year it was the big contract that was an issue, then seemingly it was no longer.
Is this a pattern of his?

This is good. Look at Uggla’s stats, and you will see 30+ HR’s for the past years. He needs to get his head straight. It has been good to see him starting to come alive the last few games. I hope he explodes the rest of the season. He can do it, just get it done. Maybe he needs to change his play list to get a different rhythm.
Lets Roll……

I certainly am not for benching Uggla on a continuing basis. But….I certainly believe he needs to be a platoon player until he starts to hit the ball. I dont care how much he’s getting paid. And above all…if the Braves end up a wild card with a single play in game….do not start Uggla if he’s still hitting sub .220!

You can’t be the Dude, I’m the Dude. Love the idea of having Johnson and Prado in the lineup together. Let’s go get them Bravos

“Change his Play List” that sounds funny, yet it makes as much sense as anything else i;ve read on here… Dan can probably Use this day-off One he Missed during the All-Star Game, when everybody else Did get a Couple Days Off, So He’s Due…

Uggla makes the play at second tonight and tags out the runner. Darned if you do, darned if you don’t.

I’m glad to see Dan’s hitting coming around. But it seems to me that he is pulling his head off the ball when he swings.

It is about the time of a good run that the braves bats take a night off. One of those night the Braves Do nothing at the plate and lose 2-0 or 3-0.

Sorry…even though “we” lost…a real treat not having to cringe every time muscles Uggla came up.

The issue is that he has too much movement at the plate. I dont care if he has always done it but he is swinging with too much arm instead of using hips and head to connect with the balll. EIther he is too stubborn to change (just want to see if he can hit homers) are they need to hire me because I could fix him in a week. His timing is goiing to continue to be off and thats why his hits he has lately are all off of breaking pitches off the plate because he gets a chance to open up and reach out. Please fix this because we need as many hitters as possible. Any coach would rather have base hits than homeruns considering homers kill rallies if they end up being strikeuts or long fly balls to the 2nd baseman or SS.

A friend of mine called me last night, right after he called Harry Reid, and he thinks that the Yankeees do not want Uggla (no one does) because of Cano, and the Angels already have Bobby Grich locked in for 30 years, so maybe the Miami (Fla.) Marlins will take him back.

let’s see there must be a few million Braves fans, if we all give 5-10 $ perhaps we can buy out his contract and send him packing. Simply not and has never been worth 13 million….
