For starting pitchers who get traded in the middle of a season, especially to a team that’s in a pennant race, the debut can be a nerve-wracking thing. Now add the fact that Mississippi native and resident Paul Maholm will be debuting tonight for the Braves, the team he grew up pulling for, in the ballpark where he and his wife drove over to see some games when they were Mississippi State undergrads.

Maholm makes his Braves debut tonight with a starter against the Astros.
That said, if Maholm could have hand-picked an opponent and setting for his Braves debut, facing the 2012 edition of Astros at Turner Field would probably be both the team and venue atop the list.
Here’s what we mean: Maholm is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts at Turner Field, his best ERA at any ballpark where he’s pitched more than once. He’s allowed one homer in 39 innings at the ballpark on Henry Aaron Drive, and collected 36 strikeouts and eight walks.
The left-hander is 12-6 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts against Houston, including 3-0 with a 1.62 ERA in his past five.
Against lefty pitchers, the Astros are hitting .207 with a .274 OBP and .335 slugging percentage, worst in majors in each of those categories.
Did we mention that Houston is awful? And that might be an understatement.
The Astros have lost 48 of their past 62 games, and they are a staggering 1-16 in their past 17 games.
As for Maholm, acquired in Monday’s trade from the Cubs, he’s in perhaps the hottest stretch of his career — which came directly on the heels of one of his worst stretches.
He’s 5-0 with a 1.02 ERA and .210 opponents’ average in his past six starts, after going 0-4 with a 6.43 ERA and .325 opponents’ average in his previous eight.
To hear him explain it, the reason for the turnaround has been pretty simple.
“Getting ahead of hitters. Being able to throw all my pitches for strikes,” he said, when I asked him why he’s been able to excel to such a degree lately. “Mixing it up, keeping the ball down. And just being confident and aggressive. Obviously I’m not a strikeout guy, so the defense was making some great plays. Getting some early leads.”
During his eight-game slump, he had 32 strikeouts, 16 walks and six homers in 42 innings. During his six-start unbeaten streak, he has 32 strikeouts, nine walks and one homer allowed in 44 innings (not counting one inning of relief before the All-Star break).
Keep in mind, we won’t be watching the debut of a rental player tonight, folks. Not a pitcher who’s going to make 8-9 starts for the Braves and then move on as a free agent. He’s under contractual control next year, with a $6.5 million team option the Braves will certainly pick up barring something entirely unforeseen happening in the next couple of months.
Braves' Kimbrel has become the most dominant closer in baseball.
So sit back and watch the veteran lefty who handled the Braves so well in the past when he was with the Pirates, and beat then twice this season, too, while allowing one run in 13 innings of two starts. Now he’s a Brave, giving the team a pair of quality left-handers for the first time in quite a while.
But it’s also worth noting, he’s actually fared better against right-handed hitters than left-handed hitters this season. Lefty batters are hitting .304 with an .807 OPS in 112 at-bats against Maholm, while righties have hit .240 with a .694 OPS 338 at-bats against him.
• ‘Stros woes: There is bad, and there is epic fail. I covered a 54-108 Marlins team in 1998 that was the latter, because they blew up the ’97 World Series championship team and rushed a bunch of not-ready guys to the majors.
The current Astros are just as bad, but for a variety of different reasons. Terribly constructed team, low payroll, starting over with new owner before next year’s move to the AL. All have contributed to the mess that is the team they’re running out on the field these days.
Can you imagine losing 16 of 17 games? That’s taking the dog days of summer to a new level, indeed. The Astros are are 1-16 with a 7.17 ERA in their past 17, and they’ve scored three runs or fewer in 11 of those games and allowed eight runs or more in nine. Repeat, they’ve allowed eight or more runs in nine out of 17 games.
Imagine being in Jordan Schafer’s position. Started the year hitting leadoff for the ‘Stros. Now batting at the bottom of the order a lot of the time for the sorriest team in baseball, and in his last 50 games Schafer has hit .169 (24-for-142) with six extra-base hits, 10 RBI, 21 walks and 50 strikeouts. He has a .279 OBP and .525 OPS in that stretch, and the Astros lost 40 of those 50 games.
Schafer’s .614 OPS this season is second-lowest among NL qualifiers, better than only Cameron Maybin’s .613 for San Diego
• Braves taking advantage: In the past, Braves teams had a tendency to waste opportunities against the lesser teams, and those 5-10 or more losses in games they felt they should have won came back to haunt them a few times at season’s end. Take last year, for instance.
But not this season. Not lately. The Braves are cleaning the clocks of the teams that, on paper, they should beat. They’re taking care of business during the first part of a long stretch of games against .500-or-below teams.
Since July 5, the Braves are 19-6 with a 3.03 ERA, 122 runs (4.9 per game), a .250 average and 28 homers. Opponent held to two or fewer runs in 12 of past 19 games including eight of the past nine.
In their past 10 games, the Braves are 9-1 with a stingy 1.40 ERA. They’ve averaged just over five runs per game in that stretch and held opponents to one run six times out of 10 games.
The Braves went from five games behind Washington on July 26 to two games behind entering today (Saturday).
The Nationals, meanwhile, have finally cooled a bit in the past week or so, going 4-4 with a 4.44 ERA in their past 8 games. And those games were against Milwaukee, Philly, Miami.
Since July 5, when the Braves started their 19-6 tear, the Nationals are 16-11.
BRAVES LINEUP
Etc.
The most dominant closer in baseball right now is Craig Kimbrel. No question. The guy has 50 strikeouts with 1 walk in his last 28 innings, allowing seven hits and a .077 opponents’ average in that stretch. Since giving up a run in back-to-back appearances May 2 and May 4, he’s allowed eight hits and two runs in 31 appearances (31 innings), both runs on homers.
For the seaon, Kimbrel’s 6.0 runner per nine innings is lowest among MLB relievers, while Jonny Venters’ 16.8 is the highest….
Tonight’s Astros starter, Lucas Harrell, is 1-1 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break. Harrell is 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in his past six road starts. He’s never faced Braves, and only three Braves have faced him (one at-bat apiece with no hits or walks)….
Reed Johnson went 3-for-7 in first two games in his first two games for the Braves, and,is 34-for-95 (.358) with a .413 OBP and .474 slugging percentage in his past 40 games since June 3….
Jason Heyward has a .379 average, .472 OBP and four homers and nine RBIs in 10 career games vs. Houston. He had only three strikeouts in nine games (26 at-bats) against the Astros before going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts (and a walk) Friday.

“CATCHING ON” by Son Volt (J. Farrar)
Can't find a reason Can't find a way Guess it's not you and me Only dogs have their day Another case of words that melt It's not a question of right Nightmares in broad daylight Season crash, season burn You survive another turn And now I'm reaching out, it's true When you don't see me, I'm catching on to you You don't see me I'm catching on to you Took a break to get that far Like the sound from a hundred-dollar guitar Bought from an old catalogue Yesterday's dust and heartache As the pieces fall like candy when you're young Medicine when you're old There's no reason or rhyme Sidestepping around On an elevator climb When you don't see me, I'm catching on to you You don't see me, I'm catching on to you Another jail, another burned-out inside Skeleton love left to die Take whatever lies ahead The good with the bad, and leave the rest When you don't see me, I'm catching on to you You don't see me I'm catching on to you

74bj: Re-post from previous blog in case you missed it.
MEJIA has performed exceptionally well in GWINNETT. In fact, there has been no appreciable drop off in his production between last season in AA and this one. His BB-SO ratio has eroded from roughly 1 BB-2.8 SO [58 BB-156 SO] to 1 BB-3.5 SO [29 BB-104 SO] this year. SO’s might be the only major concern I could see in ATLANTA. If his patience improves a notch or two I’d say he’s prime-time.
Because of EVAN’s set-back with the wrist injury, I think a call-up in September might be in order. But assuming we’re in a tight pennant race I’d say this won’t happen this year. Like MEJIA, GATTIS’ age creates a short shelf-like in the minors. I’d say GATTIS is sent to AAA next season with a healed wrist, and if he responds, he could see some time in ATLANTA in mid to late 2013.
JOEY T. our other masher, will need another full year between AA and GWINNETT in my estimation, but should show well next season as he’s improving significantly at the plate in MISSISSIPPI. His glove will undoubtedly keep him chained to the bench if or when he arrives in ATLANTA sometime in mid-late 2014.
CF TODD CUNNINGHAM has cooled a bit the past week, but is having a break-out season in PEARL RIVER. Not tremendous power, but solid defense, and he will hit for average in ATLANTA in 2013-14.
Of course, with young men who knows what the eventuality will ultimately be. But you asked, so that’s my take.

“Maholm is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts at Turner Field”
I’d assume that has more to do with the fact that he dominates the Braves (as crafty lefties often seem to do) than any specific effect of the park. That said, facing the Astros at the Ted is definitely the next best thing to facing the Braves there.

Richbrave — Yes, that’s a very good set of moves Frank Wren has made. The club is looking better and better. I know it’s a dream but I’d love to them make a serious move for King Felix. The guy is 26 and has nearly 100 wins for a lousy team and 2 years left on his contract. Make ‘em an offer they can’t refuse, Frank. They need everything.

Sorry, but that strikes me as another hyper-inflated angle story from the NYT! I’m thinking that excellent Nationals starting rotation has a lot more to do with their success than the city they play in. Likewise, the Braves’ resurgence has a lot more to do with the lineup staying in the top 10 in runs scored with the pitchers’ combined ERA suddenly rising to the top 10! The only way you can lose with those two all-important stats in your favor is if you play poor defense, and the Braves and Nats both play good defense.
No human interest, warm fuzzy stories there folks. It’s the simple equation of winning in baseball.

For all the hype about British Soccer, when is the last time they wn anything on the International stage????
Like the World Cup or the Olympics?????
I know they won a WC in 66, but when I see tham on the big Itl stage they seem to be a choke team when it counts the most.
And what was that studderstep kick by Sturridge. That cost em in the penalty and he also misses making a key pass late to Ramsey to sset up an opportunity to go up 2-1 late.
Is English soccer overrated or do they just choke up on the big stage.
Soccer belongs to Brazil and Italy. They are the kingpins like the NYY or LA Lakers.

By the way, I was looking for some info on Terdoslavich last night, and I came accross this:
But if you really just want to get excited about Joey Terdoslavich than check out these comparisons:
Rookie Ball:
Terdoslavich (205 PA)- .296/.351/.402
Player B (48 PA)- .305/.354/.375
A Ball
Terdoslavich (85 PA)- .316/.365/.430
Player B (508 PA)- .323/.388/.483
High A Ball
Terdoslavich (536 PA)- .286/.341/.526
Player B (239 PA)- .239/.305/.396
Player B is Jason Heyward.
Is not something to get excited about, nor feel like he’ll be the next big thing after Heyward. But it really looked encouraging… up until the Braves rushed him this year.

The only diffrence between Venters this year and last year IMO is agressiveness in attacking the strike zone, especially on throwing 1st pitch strikes. I think if Johnny would go back the just being more agressive he would be more successful. The thing that has killed Johnny has been the walks and giving up hits with batters counts such as 2-1, 3-1, and 3-0 counts. If he gets back to being ahead of the hitters then his stuff will be enough to get outs.

Bring up Edward Salcedo? lol Hitting .250 with about 25 errors at High A. He won’t be coming up for several years if at all.
Lynchburg does have 3 starting pitchers to take note of though. One has been promoted to AA MS already last week. They also have a SS playing well. Lynchburg won the 1st half and is in 2nd place the 2nd half. Rome, after finishing last in the 1st half, has been bolstered by collegians from the 2012 draft, and currently leads the 2nd half by 4.5 games.
Looks good at the lower levels. Danville is in 2nd place in their division.

And your right Uggla isnt paid 13 million bucks to draw walks.
.210 avg is unacceptable
Batting a little over .100 since June with 1 HR is unacceptable.
But if you take away Uglas 30 game hitting streak from last year then Uggla is a sub .200 hitter as a Brave.
Thats a bunch of money going to those numbers.
I not bashing Uggla he plays hard and draws walks and runs the bases well and despite of the Error yesterday he is playing the best defense of his career but your right he is paid to hit.

First of all, not a Jordan Schafer fan, in fact, far from it, but how can one write such a scathing review of the guy without including one on Dan Uggla? Why is he not down at Gwinnett getting himself straightened out? Think how much better the Braves would be doing if there was someone in that slot getting hits, not strike outs, walks, and popups.

There is no comparison between Uggla and Schafer.
Uggla is major league having a miserable two plus months, Schafer has done nothing and has had more opportunities to prove he is a nodody than most players could ever hope to have.
Once he flops with Houston I doubt he gets another MLB chance.

Even with all the struggles he’s going through, Uggla still gives you way more offensive production than Janish ever would; so NO.
Janish might be a defensive wizard, but his bat is worse than Uggla’s .210 avg.

From the comments I have heard, Greg Walker is putting a premium on hitting to all fields and the feedback that again I have heard is that Uggla is doing this in BP. But, for whatever reason, he is not doing it to the same degree in the game. However, the last four games I am finally seeing some evidence he is working more to make solid contact and he has been collecting some hits.
As I wrote before, in my view Uggla just needs to calm down his swing, work on making contact and stop swinging so dang hard!

From what I’ve noticed – Uggla’s first and second AB’s in a game are better than his later ones. Seems like he reverts to his ’squat and launch’ technique around his 3rd AB.

The Braves beat Carlton once in ‘72. Carlton and Phil Niekro both pitched 11 innings each. Braves won on a Mike Lum single in the top of the 11th to drive in Dusty Baker.

It’s water under the bridge at this point, but it bugs me to hear fans talk about Maholm as if he is going to be a real difference maker.
kris — I think that most of know that he is a journeyman average pitcher but what we liked about it is that they did not give up Delgado, Minor or Teheran.
Now, maybe Vizcaino does come back and be a keeper, but that TJ is still a serious injury to come back from though it is often done.
Comming back from TJ is noting to take for granted. In the minds of many we did not give up alot.
Not to mention that we do have PM for one more yr.
We were not going to retain either Dempster or Grienke, they would be rentals.
Overall not a bad game for Malolm, but those 2 HRS killed him.

I think worst case scenario Medlen is equal to Maholm, but he represents a whole lot more upside. Maholm is 30 with an 88 MPH fastball…I think its fairly safe to say that he is what he isn’t this point in his career.

Bourn is overated. What he is is a singles hitter. Uggla is more important than Bourn for the same dollar because Uggla’s hits make impact in a game. He has the presence of hitting a homerun but with Bourn all you are hoping for is a pathetic single and if there are 2 outs in the inning then there is no point in watching Bourn as he doesn’t have the impact bat to do anything but hit singles

Yea 7 innings 3 runs against the worst team in baseball is a decent outing – I’m not saying he sucks or is a terrible pitcher. The point is, why trade for something we already have plenty of in house? In a best of 5 divisional series who are your top 3? Today I would say Hudson….then does it even matter? You have arguably 4 starters who are completely average and another one (sheets) that is no guarantee to even be around.
Before everyone jumps down my throat, just realize that all I’m trying to say is that Maholm doesn’t do anything for our team. Everyone is praising Wren like he pulled off some major deal, when all he really did was further solidify our pitching mediocrity.

Note to Maholm: Paul, normally giving up only 3 runs is considered a good start in MLB. But when you pitch for the Braves expect little run support. You see the Braves offense is puny. In fact the Braves offense has the unique ability to make the pitchers of the worse MLB teams all look like Sandy Koufax. So my advice to you is to not give up more than 1 run per game.

Absolutely. The team that gets me (though I don’t hate ‘em like I do the Red Sox) is the Angels. Man… Pujols, Trout, Trumbo, Hunter… every starting pitcher over $10 mil and they add Greinke… and there they sit, 7 games over .500 and in 3rd place.

How do you lose a 3-2 game at home to the Astros? How?
How do you let a team like that get away with a one run win anywhere?
How do you not at least tie a game with three innings to make up one run against one of the worst teams baseball has seen in decades?
There’s no way the Braves are going to win the division if they can’t figure out a way to overcome one and two run deficits in late innings at home.
They haven’t done it once in 2012, a 9th inning comeback win. They did it only once last year.
There’s a reason they haven’t won a damn thing in nearly seven years.
If they even make the playoffs, they’ll lose.
If they have to play a one game playoff for the wild card, they’ll lose that too.
They do not expect to win. They hope to win.
An offense that cannot manufacture one run in three innings against the Astros is not a good offense.
No pitcher, least of all Paul Maholm, should have to read a headline following a game like tonight’s game like the one on the AJC’s website which reads, “Maholm falls short in Braves debut.”
Maholm fell short?!
Are you kidding me, David O’Brien?

Was the mere 2 runs scored against one of the best teams in baseball? No, the offense was completely outmatched by the pitching staff of the worst team in all of MLB.
No, it came against a starting pitcher who has been pretty damn good for the last month or so. The Wesley Wright guy wasn’t too bad either.
The team that gets me is the Angels. Man… Pujols, Trout, Trumbo, Hunter… every starting pitcher over $10 mil and they add Greinke… and there they sit, 7 games over .500 and in 3rd place

Beg to differ, P-finger. No less an authority than Chipper Jones realized that the Braves should’ve swept the Marlins, and should be doing the same thing to the Astros in a relatively easier three game series.
Tonight’s loss is tell-tale. It speaks to what I’ve been saying all season long, this team is not a good hitting team and will fall short when it matters most. Now with the starting pitching settling down, this becomes exceedingly glaring – just like the last two seasons.
And we all know how well that went.

“Mitchell” I feel your pain and angst even if no one else does. The one thing you need to do is keep reminding yourself who the manager is. That explains about 90% of it. That’s exactly why I said if I was Dempster I wouldn’t even consider coming to Atlanta. What pitcher would want to pitch for a team that loses 3-2 to the Astros? Sure he gave up 2 HRs, but only 3 runs. Problem is the Braves scored only 2 against a “no-name” pitcher!

With 55 games left, if the Braves split the 4 game series remaining and win each of the other series, they’ll end the season 35-20.

Well, tomorrow will be quite telling as far as how this team reacts to what was essentially a lackluster performance in the middle of a white hot pennant race. To their credit, the Braves, after Wednesday’s uninspired effort – 2 runs – attacked the Marlins in the first two innings on Thursday before they folded the hitting cage the rest of the game.

What worried me more than anything tonight is that as soon as the Braves’ loss was posted on the ballpark scoreboard in Washington, fans went nuts. This after former Brave Mike Dunn choked on it and dropped an easy feed from Carlos Lee on an easy grounder to first to open a six run outburst by Nats bats.
Those six runs happened directly and exactly after the Braves lost the game. This is the kind of baseball moment that provides a significant landmark towards launching a team on a deep run, like the Nats.
Tonight’s loss was really two losses in one. Knowing baseball lore, these are the kinds of moments that season stories are written about in baseball history books. If you don’t believe me, read the Washington papers tomorrow.

The only thing I’ve seen in the past 2 weeks is the separation of “haves” and “have-nots.”
Harrell pitched a GREAT game tonight — some of the best late movement I’ve seen from any pitcher facing the Braves this season.
The Atlanta power guys are given the green light to swing from their asses to hit the ball over the foul poles. It’s what makes Gonzalez happy. But extremely terrible approach at the plate (e.g. Prado’s foul popout on a 3-1 pitch) and when the power guys WON’T make adjustments and put the ball in play, you see the result — A LOSS.

If you wanted to look for a “monumental” game, the one where we came back on the Nats from 9-0 would probably be a good candidate. But alas, it was just a game. Just like the one in Atlanta tonight, and the one in DC too, most likely.
Chances are, they’ll continue to win about 6 of 10, more or less, and we’ll do the same. It’s the “more” and “less” that will determine the outcome. And tonight, they’re on the right side of that. I suspect that’s about all there is to it.

That said, if we see Gattis in September, that would be a BAD sign. That means that the collective bench of Hinske, Johnson, Pastornicky/Janish/Wilson, Francisco, & Ross are doing a BAD job. September is the time to give your playoff bench AB’s and get ‘em primed for a possible playoff run. If Gattis comes up, he’d have to be tearing up the IL at such a clip, that he’d be hard to ignore. That said, I think Gattis gets his real shot next ST – not this September.

I gotta think Janish stays over Jack Wilson, at least i hope so. Jack needs to transition to coaching perhaps. If Janish could hit 250, with his defense, he’d be playing for someone everyday. Hopefully he’s a late bloomer on the offensive side.

Hello everyone! Should I be upset no…… We could be like the Phillies, but we are in the Wild Card hunt as well. Should Wren get a reliever, or an extra bat? If I were Wren , I would bring up Moylan when ready, and use the Trade Waiver deadline to get a bat. We could sure use a bat, so good outings by Maholm wont get spoiled.

Much was made of Dempster’s “family considerations” when Dempster was weighing a club to be traded to, though I’m not suggesting that family wasn’t part of the calculus for him.
But I think uppermost on Dempster’s mind was positioning himself for a fat contract. His willingness to go to the Yankees – The Bronx is nowhere close to his homes in BC or Scottsdale, where he reportedly wanted to be – was one tip-off. The other was that, I believe, the Diamondbacks expressed some interest in acquiring Dempster. Hmm… Scottsdale is ‘burb of Phoenix, the last I checked.
I realize that the Cubs were anxious to move Dempster, but it amazes me how Cubs’ management let this lackluster pitcher having a contract-year-peak pull their chains.
10-5 doesn’t mean a team’s execs have to let Dempster sit in on trade talks. Some owners – I could imagine this from the late Charlie Finley – would have demoted Dempster to the bullpen and told him to pound sand for two months.

Indeed. And while I don’t like to “hate” or root against players, (though Melky has made me do so for him), I wouldn’t mind seeing Dempster just fall flat the rest of the year… put up an ERA of 4+ down the stretch.

Regardless of what most say, last night hurt. Great effort from Maholm in his debut against by far the worst team in the majors. You could argue that there might be better Minor league teams than the MLB Astro’s. While we should still be able to easily win the series, this should have been a sweep.
Were playing great Baseball, but still 3 games behind the Nationals. Are we gonna be able to catch them? We can’t play much better than we are right now. Also were really depending on other teams more to help lift us into 1st place.

Dempster has very comparable numbers to Derek Lowe over the last few season’s before they turned 36 years old. Wouldn’t surprise me to see him start around that 4 year 60 million contract. Only difference between the 2 is Dempster has some injury concerns and is more of a strikeout guy, while Lowe was the workhorse ground ball guy.
Regardless of what Dempster does the rest of the season, I think he’s still in line for a 2 year deal around 25 million.

Even bad teams have good nights.
Three games out with, what, fifty-five to play? I wouldn’t assume the Braves can’t catch the Nats just yet.
But, yes, for a while now, the Nats have had the Braves’ number. Having said that, Jurrjens cost the Braves a shot at taking the last four-game series against the Nats in DC. Another pitcher – say if Maholm had been a Brave then – might have gotten that game.

If the Braves can get 190 to 210 IP with consistent quality starts like last night he will be fine.

Bourn keeps up his first half pace and it will be a career year. Aside from his mini slump right now, he can and probably will complete his career year. Oh and it’s a contract year. Yay, Michael.

CTB, I’ll give him credit at this point for keeping the lineup intact game to game. My only complaint is that it took him more than 3 months to figure it out.

One thing I am surprised at is Bourn’s OBP so far in ‘12. I didn’t realize it was that low. Low for a leadoff guy anyways. I obviously didn’t analyze the guy’s current stats before I posted. I still think he can fly by his 2011 numbers if he can avoid such a 2nd half slump like last year. I say he’s more comfortable in ATL and maybe a bit more driven, too. And THAT would be a career year if he can.

DAM, to a point, but you have to remember injuries to CJ, McCann and Freeman also force him to adjust his lineup around. Now tht guys are healthy (knock on some wood) he can keep a steady lineup out there.

Chiricahua Brave, what’s he supposed to do when Venters sucks, EOF has chronic back problems and his GM didn’t get him another solid arm out there? He has to use what he has and I think he does well doing that. Yeah he can keep a guy out there too long, or maybe not long enough, but that’s every manager from time to time I assume.

Is it just me, or do numbers like that always seem to come back and bite the Braves. On paper, today should be a cakewalk. However, the Braves tend to come out sometimes and make really bad pitchers look really good.
Hopefully that trend will end today. Braves REALLY need to cap off this homestand with a win. Otherwise, it won’t feel like a very successful one despite the 7-3 mark.

One Example.
One game last week with 2 out in 7th Freddi brings in Durbin to face a rh batter. Guy gets on. Freddi brings in Avilan to face lh batter. He gets out of inning. Two pitchers for 1 out. Avilan due up 1st in bottom of inning. So because Freddi does NOT know how to use a double switch you have to pinch-hit and use another pitcher. That is 3 pitchers used when he could have double switched and used Durbin for 4 outs.
That is why Venters Sucks
No wonder O’Flaherty’s back hurts.

UH-OH, the stats just posted mean only one thing……the Braves lose again today. Kiss of Death!!!
BTW, some interesting excepts follows from an article prior to yesterday’s game. Not word for word, but the relevant ones are there:
1. “Did we mention that Houston is Awful? And that might be an understatement.”
2. “There is bad, and there is epic fail.”
3. “The Astros……terribly constructed team, low payroll, starting over with new owner…….all have contributed to the mess that is the team they’re running out on the field these days.”
4. “They’re taking the dog days of summer to a new level, indeed.”
This is the team that beat the Braves last night? Wonder if this article got passed around before the game and there were at least 2 players who took it personally and made sure of a win. I know one who seemed to take it VERY personally. His name reminds me of coffee.
It’s just a shame FG never heard of manufacturing a run late in the game to pull out a victory. Many a manager has done it before, but that part of the game is missing from his limited baseball knowledge.

After watching Baseball Tonight regarding the sad-sack Astros, last night’s loss is all the more galling and unforgiveable.
Chipper was right. They should have gone 10-0 in their homestand – especially since they did the hard part in sweeping the Phils. The lack of hitting will doom this team. For all you Frank Wren apologists, riddle me how poorly the man even knows anything about hitting.

I agree with Tuff. Earlier in the season, when the Braves were scrambling to find stability with their rotation, they were more creative than anyone could remember in recent memory in manufacturing runs. An early season win in LA where Dan Uggla gorked an opposite field dink to drive in a critical run symbolized this very enlightened approach.
Fast forward to today. Approach is everything, and this team is under the delusional notion that they can rake with consistency. They face Houston’s arguably best starter and instead of making a game plan to manufacture runs and adjust at some point in the game, the momentum of their ineptitude carries them throughout the game with a feeble four hits and two runs driven in by a hitter who, aside from that one at-bat, has no idea whatsoever he is doing at the plate, and thinks that everything from second base to the right is foul territory!
I feel for Greg Walker & Scott Fletcher. Having to deal with this pack of hubris-juiced dolts must drive a hitting coach or two to drink heavily.

#####DAVID O’BRIEN##### @9.42AM “It appears we might get this one in without threat of rain. Only about 10% chance of rain till late afternoon, when it jumps to 30%. So all’s good on that front.”
Another brilliant prediction that is just thrown out there apparently without checking the radar. All one has to do is look and see that long line of thunderstorms moving North from about Augusta to almost Columbus. Looks like they are heading straight for ATL and should be there between 1:30 and 2PM. It may “peter out” before it gets to ATL, but is holding together right now. Even if it does there’s another line moving down toward ATL from TN that should arrive before the game is over. Does anyone ever check these things. It’s just so easy!
Hope “weatherman” is not on the resume.

abeee: same time last year, good vibes were aplenty as the Braves sat comfortably atop the WC race. Last night’s (lack of) effort on the hitting front should have The Denizens waving their arms like the robot in “Lost in Space”…
“DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!!!” The past two Septembers have been brutal on the hitting front. Same core cast of characters. Can’t fool me twice, let alone three times. They’re gonna have to prove they’re over their recent September el foldo’s on the hitting front. Bet that the pitching will be there all the way.
I just don’t see how the hitting will get better, enough so for serious playoff ball.

Good post, “MiaBchBravesFan”! Not because you agreed with something I said, but because of the logic and common sense in the rest of your post. That insight is something hard to find on here, even from some of the sportswriters themselves. It just amazes me some of things that show up in print here, from supposedly very knowledgeable people. For instance you can just mention the “B” word(bunt) and you will get chastised, ridiculed, called “fool” and “idiot, ” and other names I won’t mention here. When the season ends, and the Braves are on the outside looking in, the lack of bunting, stealing, hit and run, etc. will have been the deciding factor. The “Yankee Mentality” of depending on HR’s, triples, doubles, etc. will not work for those teams equipped as the Braves are.

He did not want Durbin to finish the inning or he would not have taken him out. Had nothing to do with a double switch. And if he did double switch when he took Durbin out, he would have lost one of our better hitters since they were starting. Easier to just pinch hit and keep the starters in the game.
