Was the mere 2 runs scored against one of the best teams in baseball? No, the offense was completely outmatched by the pitching staff of the worst team in all of MLB. With this offense the Braves aren’t going far. Losing ground to the Nats when you are playing the Astros is pathetic. Any Braves fan not bothered by this puny effort must be okay with mediocrity. Excellence, team spirit and heart wins championships. I saw little tonight from this offense.
Apparently somebody posted DOBs article about how bad they are in the Astros locker room. When I was reading it earlier I was thinking “wow what have they done to the “StatMan”! He flat lowered the boom on them! But, I must admit they put it to good use.
So, you’re telling me that the only Astros’ player who knows how to read, is Maxwell? Wow.
CTBrian: I’ll take that as your left-handed apology. Just mind yourself with me; I didn’t disrespect you (never have, to my recollection), I expect the same in return.
look on the bright side you could be a Red Sox fan 180M payroll and they blow another 9th inning lead
Absolutely. The team that gets me (though I don’t hate ‘em like I do the Red Sox) is the Angels. Man… Pujols, Trout, Trumbo, Hunter… every starting pitcher over $10 mil and they add Greinke… and there they sit, 7 games over .500 and in 3rd place.
Ok, I’m out for the evening. Just can’t attempt to spread any more sunshine. Fact is, there’s another game in just a few hours. Gotta get up and hit the road early tomorrow, so I’ll see you kind folks Thursday evening…
How do you lose a 3-2 game at home to the Astros? How?
How do you let a team like that get away with a one run win anywhere?
How do you not at least tie a game with three innings to make up one run against one of the worst teams baseball has seen in decades?
There’s no way the Braves are going to win the division if they can’t figure out a way to overcome one and two run deficits in late innings at home.
They haven’t done it once in 2012, a 9th inning comeback win. They did it only once last year.
There’s a reason they haven’t won a damn thing in nearly seven years.
If they even make the playoffs, they’ll lose.
If they have to play a one game playoff for the wild card, they’ll lose that too.
They do not expect to win. They hope to win.
An offense that cannot manufacture one run in three innings against the Astros is not a good offense.
No pitcher, least of all Paul Maholm, should have to read a headline following a game like tonight’s game like the one on the AJC’s website which reads, “Maholm falls short in Braves debut.”

Was the mere 2 runs scored against one of the best teams in baseball? No, the offense was completely outmatched by the pitching staff of the worst team in all of MLB.
No, it came against a starting pitcher who has been pretty damn good for the last month or so. The Wesley Wright guy wasn’t too bad either.
The team that gets me is the Angels. Man… Pujols, Trout, Trumbo, Hunter… every starting pitcher over $10 mil and they add Greinke… and there they sit, 7 games over .500 and in 3rd place
I hope they stay there… then Greinke won’t want to stay and will come to ATL like a good ol’ boy!
Beg to differ, P-finger. No less an authority than Chipper Jones realized that the Braves should’ve swept the Marlins, and should be doing the same thing to the Astros in a relatively easier three game series.
Tonight’s loss is tell-tale. It speaks to what I’ve been saying all season long, this team is not a good hitting team and will fall short when it matters most. Now with the starting pitching settling down, this becomes exceedingly glaring – just like the last two seasons.
******DOB***** Seriously, seriously? Nobody cares about the “Braves quotage”. We’ve heard it all a thousand times before. Same questions, same answers on a loss.≤/i≥
Then don’t read it – are you that deficient in your ability to read a blog?
“Mitchell” I feel your pain and angst even if no one else does. The one thing you need to do is keep reminding yourself who the manager is. That explains about 90% of it. That’s exactly why I said if I was Dempster I wouldn’t even consider coming to Atlanta. What pitcher would want to pitch for a team that loses 3-2 to the Astros? Sure he gave up 2 HRs, but only 3 runs. Problem is the Braves scored only 2 against a “no-name” pitcher!
Really? I love the quotes, and I know I’m not the only one. If you don’t like them, don’t read them. It’s that simple. You don’t speak for everyone on the blog.

Let’s see if they can play with some spit and vinegar tomorrow.
It’s hard to remember if there’s been a bigger cluster than what the Marlins have done this season.
For some reason I think that new stadium will be hosting swap meets full time within the next decade. What a disaster of a franchise. And those BLEEPERS have 2 championships. Unbelievable.
What worried me more than anything tonight is that as soon as the Braves’ loss was posted on the ballpark scoreboard in Washington, fans went nuts. This after former Brave Mike Dunn choked on it and dropped an easy feed from Carlos Lee on an easy grounder to first to open a six run outburst by Nats bats.
Those six runs happened directly and exactly after the Braves lost the game. This is the kind of baseball moment that provides a significant landmark towards launching a team on a deep run, like the Nats.
Tonight’s loss was really two losses in one. Knowing baseball lore, these are the kinds of moments that season stories are written about in baseball history books. If you don’t believe me, read the Washington papers tomorrow.

Why would you think I care about your opinion regarding the quotes? You’re badly outnumbered. here and on Twitter. And even if you weren’t, I’d still post them for those who really like and appreciate them. That issue long since settled. Read ‘em, complain about ‘em, ignore them, I couldn’t care less. Honestly. Just keep clicking on these blogs, my man. Just keep clicking. And if you and your pal ace want to whine and bitch every step of the way, not a problem. Just keep coming back. Participation is key.
CTB – you and I have our disagreements, but anyone who says “Just mind yourself with me” is making himself into a target for derision…what right does he have to tell you that?
No pitcher, least of all Paul Maholm, should have to read a headline following a game like tonight’s game like the one on the AJC’s website which reads, “Maholm falls short in Braves debut.”
Maholm fell short?!
Are you kidding me, David O’Brien? – Mitchell
Kidding? No, I don’t think so. But I just saw the headline when you mentioned it. I didn’t write that — my headline said Maxwell, Astros spoil Maholm’s debut — but I’ve got no problem with that headline someone else wrote. I don’t stress over that kind of stuff. Not like two or three of you here, who seem quite preoccupied by what is written by us on the AJC website.
Yeah, tonight’s loss falls just between the Babe’s mythical “called shot” in the ‘32 World Series, and Bobby Thompson’s walk-off to win the pennant in ‘51. It’ll be the subject of sports prose for decades to come.
Venice Jim: seems like you missed the point. It’s all good. All I said is it might be a kismit moment for the Nats, is all. If you would’ve seen it live the way I did, you’d think about it some too.
Too many hits allowed. But despite all the base knocks, he probably deserved a vetter fate.
LHRP DUSTY HUGHES [3.57ERA] and RHRP ANTHONY VARVARO [3.00 ERA] close the barn-door, but the horse is already loose, and the offense can’t reel him in.
Why are they attackig you for quotes DOB?
I mean sure its the same as 99.999999% of all post inverviews with the same clichés all managers give but at least you keep the blog fresh.
Old Schultz and Bradley will go 2 or more weeks without posting sometimes.
I didnt watch the game because I figured we had this 1 in the bag and I decided to watch the UFC instead..
Ditto, MikeInFL. I was watching the Nats game while watching the Braves game on the PC. The simultaneous response was pretty impressive. The kind of thing that provides impetus to a team.
Moment? Just like the Braves coming back from 9-0? It is one game. And there are 2 months to go.
The only thing I’ve seen in the past 2 weeks is the separation of “haves” and “have-nots.”
Harrell pitched a GREAT game tonight — some of the best late movement I’ve seen from any pitcher facing the Braves this season.
The Atlanta power guys are given the green light to swing from their asses to hit the ball over the foul poles. It’s what makes Gonzalez happy. But extremely terrible approach at the plate (e.g. Prado’s foul popout on a 3-1 pitch) and when the power guys WON’T make adjustments and put the ball in play, you see the result — A LOSS.
They don’t need impetus. They’re in first place and playing fine.
If you wanted to look for a “monumental” game, the one where we came back on the Nats from 9-0 would probably be a good candidate. But alas, it was just a game. Just like the one in Atlanta tonight, and the one in DC too, most likely.
Chances are, they’ll continue to win about 6 of 10, more or less, and we’ll do the same. It’s the “more” and “less” that will determine the outcome. And tonight, they’re on the right side of that. I suspect that’s about all there is to it.
What did the Braves do after another GREAT MOMENT…..the OTIS NIXON CATCH in 1992.
Saturday, 7/24/92 — Defeated Pittsburgh 1-0 — Otis Nixon catch.
Sunday, 7/25/92 — Lost to Pittsburgh 5-4
Monday, 7/26/92 — Lost to Houston 5-1
Tuesday 7/27/92 — Lost to Houston 7-5
Wednesday, 7/28/92 — Defeated Houston 5-3
Thursday, 7/29/92 — Lost at San Francisco 5-0
Friday, 7/30/92 — Lost at San Francisco 4-3
So much for that MOMENT, although after this streak they did win 9 in a row. But it’s one game.
It’s games like this that make it hard for me to visualize LUIS DURANGO patroling CF in GWINNETT next year.
C CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT [.243 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B [5], 12 BB.
Five doubles and CHRISTIAN has been in the line-up almost every night. I despair of seeing him as a replacement for anyone but DAVID ROSS after he’s 40.
1B JOEY T. [.311 BA] 2-5, 1 R, 1 E [12, missed catch].
btw, see that a young pitcher named MATT KIMBREL struck out 2 in 1 IP tonight for the GCL Braves… I believe that’s about a K per IP for Craig’s kid brother. (in about 6 innings, lol)
DOB must have got off the wrong side of the Harley. I haven’t done any bitching or whining tonight about your quotes. I always look forward to the cap tipping and running him out here quotes. I know all Radio hosts and Sports writers say they don’t care what other people think but like you said it is those people participating that matter. So it’s when those people quit listening and quit participating that causes concern for the employers.
That said, if we see Gattis in September, that would be a BAD sign. That means that the collective bench of Hinske, Johnson, Pastornicky/Janish/Wilson, Francisco, & Ross are doing a BAD job. September is the time to give your playoff bench AB’s and get ‘em primed for a possible playoff run. If Gattis comes up, he’d have to be tearing up the IL at such a clip, that he’d be hard to ignore. That said, I think Gattis gets his real shot next ST – not this September.
Sometimes people think they are the king of their profession and can say or do whatever they want too. Take Leo, some called him the pope of pitching but the popes been without a Major League job for sometime now. Decisions Decisions Decisions.
ACE – I think DOB might be holding past misdeeds against you, but you have abandoned your one note ways. But I can understand his annoyance after he stopped quotes early this year due to complainers like ItIsI, and then resumed after a massive outpouring of love from the majority of bloggoristas…

With 55 games left, if the Braves split the 4 game series remaining and win each of the other series, they’ll end the season 35-20.

Talking with Ozzie by the batting cage the other day, I didn’t get a sense that he felt this would be a long-term stint for him with the Marlins….

DOWN ON THE FARM
GWINNETT
G-Men fall to the BULLS 2-3.
RHSP JULIO TEHERAN [L 6-6, 5.12 ERA] 6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 SO.
DH ERNESTO MEJIA [.305 BA] 0-2, 1 RBI [79], 1 SF, 1 BB, 2 SO.
SS JACK WILSON [.222 BA] 1-1, 1 2B [3], 1 RBI [5], 1 SF, 2 BB.
3B RUBEN GOTAY [.216 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B [7], 1 SO.
RF FELIX PIE [.290 BA] 1-4, 2 Outfield Assists [2B, 2B].
LF JOSH KROEGER [.248 BA] 1-2, 2 BB.
Lead-off LUIS DURANGO [.279 BA] 1-5, 1 R.
The awfense had their chances, but 0-9 RISP, leaves 9 runners stranded and that’s all she wrote.

Moment?
What did the Braves do after another GREAT MOMENT…..the OTIS NIXON CATCH in 1992.
Saturday, 7/24/92 — Defeated Pittsburgh 1-0 — Otis Nixon catch.
Sunday, 7/25/92 — Lost to Pittsburgh 5-4
Monday, 7/26/92 — Lost to Houston 5-1
Tuesday 7/27/92 — Lost to Houston 7-5
Wednesday, 7/28/92 — Defeated Houston 5-3
Thursday, 7/29/92 — Lost at San Francisco 5-0
Friday, 7/30/92 — Lost at San Francisco 4-3
So much for that MOMENT, although after this streak they did win 9 in a row. But it’s one game.

MISSISSIPPI
8-7 Bandits over the LOOKOUTS.
Lead-off CF TODD CUNNINGHAM [.323 BA] 3-6, 1 R, 1 2B [19], 1 RBI [43], 1 SO.
LF EVAN GATTIS [.286 BA] 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR [6], 2 RBI [21], 1 BB, 2 SO.
3B JOE LEONARD [.272 BA] 3-4, 2 R, 2 HR [9], 5 RBI [54].
RF TIM SMITH [.286 BA] 1-3, 2 BB.
2B/RF PHIL GOSSELIN [.249 BA] 1-5, 2 SO, 1 E [13, throwing].
PH KEENAN WILEY [.254 BA] 1-1, 1 R.
RHSP DAVID HALE [4.34 ERA] 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO.
HALE is recording a lot of SO’s. If he tightens up his hits, he’ll consistantly win ball-games.
LHRP CHASEN SHREVE [W 2-0, 3.00 ERA] 1.1 IP, 1 H, zeros, 2 BB, 1 SO.
RHRP MARK LAMM [H 1, 4.02 ERA] 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 SO.
LHRP RYAN BUCHTER [SV 3, 1.34 ERA] 1.1 IP, 1 H, zeros, 2 SO.
