The ONLY concern I have about Maholm is that he’s been on nothing but second-division teams for the duration…..He’ll be facing REAL pressure for the first time.
Kris- I didn’t like giving up a power arm even though injured. In a perfect world without corporate media ownership we could’ve used Viz for Josh Johnson.
It’s water under the bridge at this point, but it bugs me to hear fans talk about Maholm as if he is going to be a real difference maker.
kris — I think that most of know that he is a journeyman average pitcher but what we liked about it is that they did not give up Delgado, Minor or Teheran.
Now, maybe Vizcaino does come back and be a keeper, but that TJ is still a serious injury to come back from though it is often done.
Comming back from TJ is noting to take for granted. In the minds of many we did not give up alot.
Not to mention that we do have PM for one more yr.
We were not going to retain either Dempster or Grienke, they would be rentals.
Overall not a bad game for Malolm, but those 2 HRS killed him.
He went 7 innings, gave up 3 runs, and leaves still giving us a chance to win. Not great but better than some pick-ups the Braves have made in the past.
Venice Jim – I was hoping we could get Grienke or Josh Johnson, but truth be told I would have been very happy if we had just gone with Medlen as a starter and picked up a solid middle reliever.
I think worst case scenario Medlen is equal to Maholm, but he represents a whole lot more upside. Maholm is 30 with an 88 MPH fastball…I think its fairly safe to say that he is what he isn’t this point in his career.
Bourn is overated. What he is is a singles hitter. Uggla is more important than Bourn for the same dollar because Uggla’s hits make impact in a game. He has the presence of hitting a homerun but with Bourn all you are hoping for is a pathetic single and if there are 2 outs in the inning then there is no point in watching Bourn as he doesn’t have the impact bat to do anything but hit singles
I’m an oldie (still mad about the Bret Butler trade) so I learned patience a while back. That being said, giving up ever other pitch then jumping back on the wagon is giving me whip-lash
I see the criticism of Bourn. He has value, but he would bring more to the Braves if he made fewer outs. He could really stand to be more patient and take more walks. That and he strikes out entirely too much. Those are my only criticisms of Bourn.
beat Hamels, Blanton, Halladay, Buehrle, Nolasco. Lose to Lucas Harrell and an Astros team that has won but 3 games since June 28. Yeah, it wouldn’t be something to feel good about that’s for sure. Well, they got 6 outs to try and make sure that doesn’t happen.
Yea 7 innings 3 runs against the worst team in baseball is a decent outing – I’m not saying he sucks or is a terrible pitcher. The point is, why trade for something we already have plenty of in house? In a best of 5 divisional series who are your top 3? Today I would say Hudson….then does it even matter? You have arguably 4 starters who are completely average and another one (sheets) that is no guarantee to even be around.
Before everyone jumps down my throat, just realize that all I’m trying to say is that Maholm doesn’t do anything for our team. Everyone is praising Wren like he pulled off some major deal, when all he really did was further solidify our pitching mediocrity.
safe to say if they get to that point, the Braves hitters should (should ….) have an advantage over a Houston closer who will probably be a bit rusty in that department
