Vivlamore reporting from Turner Field.
OK folks, it’s just me tonight – straight off seven days of standing on the Falcons training camp field – so cut me a little slack.
I’m just going to post tonight’s lineup versus the Astros and then head down to the clubhouse.
Look for note items when I return before game time. At least this gives you a thread to discuss the game.
Thanks!
Lineup vs. Astros
1. Bourn 8
2. Prado 7
3. Heyward 9
4. Jones 5
5. Freeman 3
6. McCann 2
7. Uggla 4
8.Janish 6
9. Hudson 1
As promised, and thanks for your patience, here are the links to three news blogs.
Maholm ready for Braves debut.
Gearrin, bullpen dominated Marlins.

How’s about a Pastornicky start tomorrow? Unless we feel the need to put our best defense on the field for Maholm’s first start, it might be about due. His defense was bad, but not THAT bad. Give ‘em another shot.

I was thinking 6 years at 14 million, which I think is higher than the Braves will go. If he could continue the next 5 seasons as good as the first half of this one he would be worth it, but I think that is highly unlikely.

Signing Bourn to a five-year, $67.5 million deal would put the Phils’ payroll at about $158 million for 19 players, leaving less than $20 million to spend at third base, left field, and for spare bench parts and perhaps a fifth starter, if the job doesn’t go to Kyle Kendrick.
I see Bourn getting more than this. I think this guy is underselling him a bit and underselling the Boras factor. Michael Bourn will sign for at least five years and 75 million.

So stupid. SO stupid. Get rid of Dan Uggla, how many times do I have to say it?? He’s the biggest piece of trash the braves have ever screwed up badly on. Hope Frank Wren wisens up some time & fires the coach & dumps Uggla off on someone like he did with Derek Lowe. I’m not a Pastornicky fan, but I’d take him at 2nd base any day over Uggla, maybe Janish can improve his hitting & the braves could have a deadly tandem up the middle with Simmons at SS & Janish at 2B.

Braves would be wise to to just do the qualifying offer for Bourn. Add a draft choice. After trading for him in the 2nd half he struggled for us and now he’s struggling again in the 2nd half. I just can’t see paying anymore than 10-11 mil a season on a long term deal considering our payroll.

Tennessee, thanks for the information of the the starting 9. It really is shocking to see how well the Braves have done in spite of the top 2’s lack of hitting. Danny U had better get it going quickly if he wants to help the Braves get into the playoffs.
Keep playing Reed and find a way to insert him into the lineup. If Dan doesn’t get hot in the next couple of games, put Prado at second and Reed in left.

Constanza likely gets no consideration for being a starting centerfielder because he is unable to get on base frequently enough and while he has speed, his defense profiles better as a left fielder.

Lance? Lance Berkman?
Lance Berkman limped off the field after grounding out in the final at-bat of an 0-for-4 night.
His right knee, which was surgically repaired just over two months ago, had given out on him.
The Cardinals did not have a more specific diagnosis on Thursday, though more will be known after Berkman visits with Dr. George Paletta when the team returns to St. Louis on Friday. Berkman had the knee heavily wrapped with ice after the game.
“It’s just not a perfect knee,” he said. “I’ve been scanned, zapped more than most players, probably, in that particular part of the body. I’ll let the doctor look at it and see what he thinks.”
Thursday marked just the ninth start Berkman has made since returning from a procedure that addressed a torn meniscus and other loose cartilage in his right knee. And while the discomfort was somewhat severe on Thursday, this was not the first night it has been sore.
“Life with a balky knee is just some days it feels OK, some days it doesn’t,” Berkman said. “There’s certainly times on this road trip when I haven’t felt great. There’s been times where I’ve felt pretty good. It’s just hit or miss.”
Berkman finished the road trip 2-for-11 and is batting just .182 since returning from the disabled list in the team’s first series out of the All-Star break

Upton, Pagan, Victorino are the choices if/when Bourn leaves? I will pass on all 3. I would rather move Heyward to CF and try to keep Johnson over those choices. Constanza is not an everyday player. He can get hot for a week but if he got 500 ABs he would hit 220. Would rather see Pastornicky in CF full time than Constanza. Maybe Felix Pie can get his groove back next spring? If you are going to challenge someone on stats you really should know what you are talking about. and to quote his minor league stats is pretty silly too, the Ted is not Gwinnett.
He is just another AAAA hitter who will never amount to anything except in short spurts and will soon be out of major league baseball altogether most likely.

I would think twice about moving Hanson, bottom line is that in spite of his shortcommings, he has win games when healthy.
The injuries are frustrating, but are U ready to give up on a 25 yr old. Now, it does depend on how serious and how he bounces back from the back injury.
Just trading him for the sake of moving him is stupid (especially if its a move designed not to pay him).
Is he going to decline in performance like JJ, that we do not know, but I;d hate to see them move him for mediocre talent just to dump a salary. And, for what Tommy has done he should command 6 or 7 mil assuming he is healthy.

Disgusted, I beg to differ. If unloading JJ and Hanson is done to free up money in oder to garner that much-needed LF power bat, or to have a fighting chance in re-signing Bourne, I am ALL for it. That GREAT trade with the Tigers for JJ only got us flashes of brilliance, but more aggravation and frustration that forced the Braves to make moves to compensate for his ultimate failings. Hanson’s injuries and second-half fades cannot be allowed to be a part of the 2013 team. Just the extermination of those two contracts – plus the elimination of Chipper’s, Lowe’s, & (to a very small extent) McLouth’s money commitments – allows the Braves to really have a chance to re-sign Bourn…

@MiabeachBraves — If they do get a true POWER bat for LF as a result of unloading both Tommy and JJ then of course I am on board with that. I get it.
JJ is gone, that is a forgone conclusion. But Hanson is the one you can debate on.
I would not be on board if they bring in a Chase Headley type for LF, I would want someone with Nick Swisher type of numbers If we could get that kind of producer who is younger and cheaper than Swish will be.
And, I do get the frustration with Hanson;s second half fades, when you talk moving guys you do have to keep an open mind.
Now, I do not expect the Braves to land Swisher, but would like thay typd of player for LF instead of a Headley.
And if it means keeping Bourn, Prado and Mac around then that does make sense. Best case scenario is having all three together. How that is done is a good question.

If the plan is fixed on a 90 mil payroll for 5 yrs down the line it will be difficult. But if you do not pay Mac, what do you do. Fast track Bethancourt or go with some cheaper journeyman type.
Hard question to answer, but I say that they will have to give 5 yrs at 80 mil. That is alot, but if you do not………then management will face the consequences of losing him to a team that will pay.

the biggest scoring change needed is the saves rule; managers allow the rule to dictate strategy rather than using their best reliever in high leverage situations–use Kimbrel late in tie games with guys on base—his ability to miss bats would really mean something, rather than entering when the bases are clear and the Braves lead by three or less

an incredibly ignorant statement. I will pass on any more conversation I guess.
@Sneaky Pete — And who te hell are you to call that in incredibly ignorant statement — sure stadiums are different but it should not make that big a difference.
Hey, look at Adrian Gonzalez at Petco, he was a stud slugger there. If you are good enough you can make an impact regardless of where you play. In fact A. Gonzalez was a better player at Petco than he has been playing most of his game in an alleged hitters paradise in Fenway Park.
If you are good enough you put up numbers. Some of the All-Time greats put up numbers in pitchers paradises, go back to Ralph Kiner in Forbes Field.
Ball park adjustments are overrated, thanks to the sabergeeks. There are factors, but the game is the game.
The saberdummies have Freddie Freeman rated below the 2.0 WAR, which is the bottom line for an everyday player. Come on, anyone who has watched Freddie this yr and last know that he is a major league starting first baseman. No firstbaseman leading the league in RBI;s at his position is a less than starting everday player.
So to H with you and your snide comments.

McCan is a dicey situation because of the position he plays. Just so much wear and tear (like an NFL Runningback). Your not gonna pay 5 yr. $80+ mil for McCann’s defense obviously, so do you think he can keep up good numbers (note his avg is still bad and has been on the decline since 2009)
or would you do something like the Cardnials did to Mike Matheny several years ago when they decided to go with the young Catching prospect and save their money and use that money for Matt Halliday, Wainright and Carpenter. Remember McCann is average at best defensively and his offense will hav to hold up because we are a mid-market team and really cant have too many bad investiments. But its gonna be a tough decision either way.

I never said that you said any such thing, I was simply saying that it could happen. No need to get all defensive about it.
many, maybe most , players are put on waivers now just in case they might want to trade him, or sometimes to get an idea of how he is valued by other teams. Happens frequently every year at this time, and of course most times they are just pulled back off the list; but sometimes it leads to a trade and once in a great while they just dump the player on the claiming team.

Only 4 fours after 7 innings against the lousy Astros? That’s it? 4 Runs! Same old weak Braves offense.
Uggla’s night: That “double” the official scorer gave Uggla was so clearly an error by the Astros SS. What a farce, a hometown ruling if there ever was one. Then in the 7th Uggla can’t even get a hit against a minor league pitcher.

My major concern with Uggla is that it is starting to look very mental. Even in the slump last year, he hit bombs because he could still turn on a cookie fastball. He is yanking on EVERYTHING, has completely forgotten about RF and is a groundball hitting machine, like someone we knew of recent vintage. That little opposite field gork he hit against the Dodgers earlier in the year to drive in a crucial run in a win is not there anymore in his repetoire.
I am not kidding when I say that Uggla is suffering from a severe case of McLouth-oma.

Usually when it’s a shoulder, you say it’s over. I am really happy for Moylan. Literally, what a shot in the arm for this ball club for September if he can make it all the way back.
It’s been almost a decade since a lot of good things have happened for this ballclub in August. Getting Simmons, Hanson, and Moylan back healthy and productive will be HUGE!!!

I do NOT want to see this loser on the roster in 2013. Those of you touting that Tigers trade a couple of years ago need to rethink that pose. The Braves did NOT make out significantly better, and thanks to JJ’s woosie-ness, we had to trade a valued young arm to replace his sorry self.
He’s a punk. Don’t wanna see him in our uni next year. Period.

We did get a few yrs out of JJ, but his usefulness is over for this team.
We gave up an aging Edgar Renteria for him, a salary they wanted to move anyway, so for the time they got usefulness our of JJ from 08 to 11, Braves did not do bad.

Hanson is a decent pitcher from April until mid July, but he breaks down after the All-Star game.

I have a gut hunch that when Grienke gets signed that the team that wins that prize will regret it.
He has had one great yr in MLB, in 09,. An off yr in 10, good yrs in 08 and 11 and was having one good first half.
I am not sold on him, and Braves were smart not to give the farm up for him. We would not afford him anyway.

MiaBach — I think its safe to assume that this team will be a hundred percent healthier than last Sept’s team.
And some of these guys have gotten better — Heyward is one guy who took last yrs experience and took it by the horns and improved. Freddie Freeman is getting better.
We are seeing signs of the good Johnny Venters again. Lots of good karma around here.
And how FF comes up with a WAR of less than 2.0 gives less credibilty of that theoretical hyperboble. We KNOW that Freddie Freeman is a regular starting every day 1B who is getting better, & he is young.

Coach: and that’s where Fredi has to get strong. He needs to allow starters to go at least seven, as opposed to the 5-6 crap he did last year that destroyed the bullpen. That is why IMO Moylan’s comeback is so key; any innings he can pitch in relief in September will be an absolute blessing for this ballclub.

We have a little swagger right now but we have played lately a bad Phillies team about to trade off guys, a sorry Marlins and Astros team that hardly has a recognizable player.
I’m with you now. I want the Braves to do something special but we have big questions that have to be answered. Uggla is going to have to hit better, Simmons, after he gets going again, is going to have to come back the way he was prior to his injury and the other guys are going to have to be consistent the rest of the way,
Then the starting pitching is going to have to perform and really we have only 1 guy you can bet on. Sheets-I love the guy and his performance but its still early for him in my mind but …Minor is throwing better but still not a mainstay…Maholm – haven’t seen enough but I know he is a nibbler and thats scary to me in big games…Hanson is real questionable right now.
Hey, I’m hoping for the best but these are some of my concerns/questions

I am with you CTB, this has been something real good.
If we just win the WC game and get to the Division series and lose I am cool with that (for the expectations I had).
If we go further well, of course that is great but personally I do not expect that. I do think its been a very good yr and if we are beating the bad teams well, that is what good teams are supposed to do. Lots of good has happened this yr.

Interesting article from NYT..
“Why D.C. Is Doing So Well”
A SPORTS team obviously cannot create a civic renaissance. But when a city and a team happen to go on a good run at the same time, it can be particularly sweet, and it’s happened more often than you might think…… http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/05/sunday-review/why-washington-is-doing-so-well.html?hp

Entering his Braves debut tonight, Maholm is 1-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts at Turner Field, his best ERA at any ballpark where he’s pitched more than once.
He’s allowed one homer in 39 innings at Turner Field, with 36 strikeouts and eight walks.

DOWN ON THE FARM
DANVILLE
Double-header washed-out in D-VILLE yesterday.
GCL-ORLANDO
The Mousekaters lose a protracted battle with the STANKEES-rookies 6-7. RATS!
RHSP ROBERTO ESTRELLA [L 1-3, 6.60 ERA] 3.0 IP, 5 H, 1 HR, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO.
LHRP ERIK CORDIER [0.00 ERA] 0.1 no-hits, 2 BB, 1 SO.
ERIK CORDIER is on the 40-man, but I think his days as a BRAVE are numbered. Yesterday in ORLANDO he issued two walks then recorded the first out in the fourth with a SO. After that he was shut-down, and pulled from the bump. He’s been battling extended injuries of unknown origin evidently.
RHRP MIKE FLORES [4.76 ERA] 2.0 IP, no-hits, 3 BB, 2 SO.
RHRP PAT SCROGGIN [0.00 ERA] 1.2 IP, 1 H, zeros, 2 SO.
HOKIE-HOKIE high. RICHMONDER SCROGGINS is off and running after extended ST on the back-lots.
Rookie LHRP BRANDON ROHDE [1.08 ERA] 2.0 IP, pristine, 3 SO.
The rook’s have a fine initial season.
RF JOEY MENSES [,291 BA] 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB.
C TONY NUNEZ [.233 BA] 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B [3], 1 BB.
3B MIKE DODIG [.173 BA] 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B [4], 1 HR [2], 5 RBI [9], 1 SO.
DODIG has really struggled this initial campaign, but the BRAVES are sticking with his bat. He finally seems to be making some head-way. Best game of the season yesterday.
EMMANUEL DANIEL [.180 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B [1].
Rookie 2B K.C. CLABOUGH [.414 BA] 2-4, 1 2B [3], 1 RBI [3], 1 SB [6], 1 SO.
KC was overmatched in ROME, and since being sent down to ORLANDO, he’s been in and out of the line-up, but when in it, he’s been pretty good. In nine games in the GCL, he’s 7-13 with three doubles, two RBI’s, 4 BB, and only three SO’s.

@richbrave; sorry to bother ya, but I know I often speak of Gattis & more recently Mejia, 2 young Thumpers, just wonder’n, if the Bravos ever needed their services, would you think they would be ready? I kinda look at ‘em as our version of what the angels have out of their 2 young thumpers, Trumbo & Trout. Though I know their much younger. I also look at ‘em in comparison to ARZ’s Goldschmidt & Boston’s young 3B thumper who’s mak’n headlines. You’re thoughts & if you’ve seen them play any?

MEJIA has performed exceptionally well in GWINNETT. In fact, there has been no appreciable drop off in his production between last season in AA and this one. His BB-SO ratio has eroded from roughly 1 BB-2.8 SO [58 BB-156 SO] to 1 BB-3.5 SO [29 BB-104 SO] this year. SO’s might be the only major concern I could see in ATLANTA. If his patience improves a notch or two I’d say he’s prime-time.
Because of EVAN’s set-back with the wrist injury, I think a call-up in September might be in order. But assuming we’re in a tight pennant race I’d say this won’t happen this year. Like MEJIA, GATTIS’ age creates a short shelf-like in the minors. I’d say GATTIS is sent to AAA next season with a healed wrist, and if he responds, he could see some time in ATLANTA in mid to late 2013.
JOEY T. our other masher, will need another full year between AA and GWINNETT in my estimation, but should show well next season as he’s improving significantly at the plate in MISSISSIPPI. His glove will undoubtedly keep him chained to the bench if or when he arrives in ATLANTA sometime in mid-late 2014.
CF TODD CUNNINGHAM has cooled a bit the past week, but is having a break-out season in PEARL RIVER. Not tremendous power, but solid defense, and he will hit for average in ATLANTA in 2013-14.
Of course, with young men who knows what the eventuality will ultimately be. But you asked, so that’s my take.

I believe i caught CUNNINGHAM last fall in the AZL. Looked pretty good. He’s improved at the plate since then.
The others unfortunately, no I haven’t seen them. Have missed the AAA MLBN games this season thusly haven’t seen MEJIA much to my chagrin.

Your mention of RED SOX up and comer’s reminds that one RICHMOND-area youngster JACKIE BRADLEY Jr. [SOUTH CAROLINA alum] is on the way up the BOSOX food-chain. He’s in AA PORTLAND after torching the CAROLINA League. He’s cooled a bit in AA, but I would not be at all surprised to see him arrive as a lead-off hitter for them in late 2014.
