Braves postgame quotes after Thursday’s win vs. Marlins

MIKE MINOR

On the rain-shortened outing:

“It’s unfortunate but as long as we got the win. It’s been a key couple of games this homestand. I feel like it’s a big win tonight anyways. The guys in the bullpen picked me up. It’s a win-win situation.”

On if stayed loose during delay:

“I put my jacket on, just to stay warm, waited about five, 10 minutes, then Roger (McDowell) came to me and said we really don’t have the time, this rain could be here for an hour longer, 20 minutes longer, we don’t know. With the game how it was going, he told me to go ahead and start doing my stuff, get on the bike or whatever I needed to do. They’d take care of it from there.”

On if frustrated by it:

“I think anybody would, just because we’re all competitive. But we honestly didn’t know what was going on and it’s not really a risk to take right now, to try to get it started back up.”

On how he felt before then:

“I felt great until the rain started coming in and we got a big lead. This has happened to me before, just trying to throw strikes and wasn’t trying to throw balls obviously. I started throwing a lot more balls than I really wanted to.”

On if getting mud in spikes and stuff:

“That wasn’t too bad, but the ball was getting a little bit wet. None of that really factored into how I was throwing. It was more of ‘just try to throw a strike, throw it right down the middle.’ Usually when you try to do that, you don’t really execute a certain pitch, for some reason you don’t throw it down the middle.”

On if continued work of the last month:

“It pretty much goes all the way back to me and Roger talking and me and the guys talking. I don’t know maybe that just turned the corner and kind of gave me the extra boost to get some good starts in there.”

On the Roger story:

“When I was struggling, Roger was a big guy involved in that. I throw my bullpen it was more of a we work on something, instead of just throwing my pitches and getting out. It was ‘hey, why are we doing this in a game.’ Just certain things that we needed to change and attacking more hitters and not trying to walk anybody, trying to throw more strikes, a better release point. We just tried to work on that, being more consistent in my delivery.”

CHIPPER JONES

On Eovaldi:

“We faced him last year in a start with LA and I think we kind of did the same thing, we got out early. He wasn’t getting many of his secondary pitches over. He wasn’t getting many swings and misses with them so it allowed us to be able to get fastballs in good counts and we didn’t miss them the first couple innings. Lot fell in for us. We hit some bullets, kind of set the tone for the game right there in the first two innings.”

On him saying Minor is not a 5.01 ERA guy:

“He’s gone from 7 to right at 5, so he’s been pitching really well. He’s got a lot of innings under his belt so you’re going to see that ERA continue to come down I think. I think you’re looking at a kid who’s kind of realized what he’s capable of doing and he’s going out and executing. I thought he was not as sharp as he has been the last couple of starts but was still good enough to pitch that lineup well.”

On still hoping 8-2 in homestand, if can say I want the sweep here with a team playing like the Astros:

“Oh yeah, I want a sweep. It’s not easy to sweep as we proved in this series. I don’t think there’s any doubt we feel like we’re the better team but to go out and put four solid games up. Eventually you’re going to run into a pitcher that has it. LeBlanc pitched us really tough last night. We dug ourselves a big hole in first inning and that’s usually how winning streaks end. But if you’re going out and playing consistently all the way through your rotation and all the way through the lineup, then winning eight out of nines and 10 out of 12s, those streaks are more frequent than 5-5s.”

On if would be disappointed if didn’t sweep them:

“No I said I didn’t want to go any worse than 8-2. I said (on TV) 9-1 would be really, really good. Actually I’d like 10-0 but we can’t be perfect every day. We figure we got off to a good start with the sweep (vs. the Phillies). We knew a four-game series was going to be tough to sweep. The Astros have been playing a little better so. I don’t know what the pitching matchups are, I don’t know who we face, but certainly I expect us to win the series.”

On the lift lately from the bullpen:

“We’ve had to because we’ve had rain delays and short starts so our bullpen has been taxed. They’re coming in and keeping us in games and holding leads. Enough has been said about what O’Flaherty and Kimbrel have done all year, but enough hasn’t been said as to the yeoman’s work that Durbin and Cristhian Martinez and Medlen when he was down there, Avilan’s come in and had to throw multi-inning appearances, and those outings are very important to the team, so they we don’t overuse guys, don’t overexpose guys. They’ve been doing a good job of eating up some innings for us.”

On fouling a ball off a toe:

“I fouled it right off the biggest piggy I got. It was like the only at-bat since I came back from getting hurt that I didn’t wear a shin guard. But I fouled it off my back toe which was kind of weird. That doesn’t happen very often.” (He’s all right.)

FREDI GONZALEZ

On the rain-shortened outing for Minor:

“It’s a situation where you always try to do the best for the young man and we didn’t think running him back out there was prudent. But that’s just the way it goes. I tell you what our bullpen, the whole series, two rain delays, Medlen with a start that was short and off the top of my head, they gave up one run, two runs. It’s unbelievable. They’re running on fumes right now. We need to get a couple starters to go (deep) and mother nature to cooperate a little bit. Tip your hat off to those guys because they did a terrific job holding the Marlins team in check when we needed them to. Martinez today, middle of the game, Gearrin coming in, and Durbin, did a nice job.”

On if tried to keep Minor warm a little while:

“We did but it wasn’t worth it. If he was 32 and you don’t have to worry about the arm, the next start, you’ve got a better feel, then you say OK go out there try to get 1 2/3 innings more or whatever you can, but we felt that he was good.”

On coming out swinging to nail series down:

“We came out and scored three in the first, three in the second and we didn’t do anything the rest of the night. And the way our bullpen situation was and mother nature you’re going ‘let’s get some more runs.’ But it all worked out. Heyward had a hell of a night swinging the bat and making some great plays defensively. Chipper got two hits and two-run double to start off the game. It was a good day and to give Prado a day off and still win the ballgame was good.”

On holding breath on slide by Heyward in outfield:

“Absolutely, at first base also on the last place, both of those guys got their feet tangled up a little bit, him and Jennings. Heyward had got a spike mark but he’ll be fine.”

On Eovaldi:

“He’s got a pretty good arm. I just think his command wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen him and we took advantage of it.”

Great series win. Sucks the Nats keep winning whenever we do though. Just got keep winning that’s all we can do. A sweep against the Astros is what we need, can’t play down to their level.

Fredi sounds really uneducated when he uses “helluva”. It’s like a kid who gets to curse because he can. Good to see the Braves bounce back with a win & not get into a losing streak following a winning streak. It sure seems like this team has turned a corner. I actually believe they can beat the pesky Gnats now.

Swinging the bats, consistent performances on the mound, and still playing solid “D.” Let’s not take the foot off the pedal against the Astros.

It seems like for pitchers it isn’t “if they will need Tommy John surgery” but “when they will need Tommy John surgery. ” Good to be on the safe side.

Hey, John Lenin ,distant cousin to our Marxist friend, fredi’s command of the language is as good as the great majority of blogs here.
On another point,I am pleased to see some bloggers getting tired of yours & others anti fredi rants. I challenge you to read the classic work on the effectiveness of baseball managers by Bill James …….the best estimate is that the difference in wins between so called good & bad managers over the course of a season is no more than several games. Are you up to it? Will you educate yourself on what the evidence is rather than resort to BS hindsight biases?

Well has Fredi been a good manager……….No
But can Fredi do something about that with a successful August and September….. Absolutely
But I think when he got ejected from the game in that Marlin loss when Heyward got kicked out it really sparked the Braves.winning 8 of their last 9. Fredi really needs to just show more emotion. In all my criticizing of Fredi thats been my biggest complaint but Fredi as of lately has bee more Firery even in his post game quotes.

Many of the bloggers were wrong about Chipper-he has been superb this season.
They called FW an idiot for trading for Francisco-8 HR in limited duty and heir apparent to Chipper.
They wanted to trade Heyward for a bag of balls earlier this year.
They lambasted Liberty for being CHEAPIA- they actually have the 16th highest payrool out of 30 teams and only 2 teams with higher payroll have better records.
They wanted FWs head-he has shrewdly acquired 2 capable starters while giving up one injured minor league prospect.
They said Fredi was an idiot-he has managed the Braves to the 6th best record in baseball with a good shot at the division title.
I guess all you guys have left is to hate on Uggla-got to find something negative, right?

Ralph,

At the beginning of the season, and with the talent afforded this team, nearly every baseball expert tabbed the Braves as a playoff caliber team. If the Brave do so, they have simply met expectations and this is not Manager of the Year criteria.

The true test of Gonzalez is when the team isn’t hitting and or pitching, finishing the drill (he failed miserably at this last September) or in a short playoff series We’d better hope we’re pitching great and hot at the plate as no way on earth this empty head makes a difference–He’s at a loss when it comes to in-game, situational management.

Some of the comments by bloggers using anonymous aliases are just filthy, especially those directed at Fredi Gonzalez. People who post such ugly remarks without the courage to use their actual names are cowards. I would hope the AJC staff would take note of such comments and remove them. The Braves have won 8 of 9 games and some bloggers still want to take childish pot shots. To those who do this for some cheap thrill of seeing their words in print, take the time to grow up and you might find out there’s a lot more available in the world than posting semi-racist nonsense on an AJC columist’s blog!

You experts never stop…. Lah-ree and his wanna-be-legends-just-like-Lah-reee, for some inexplicable reason, cannot seem to revel in the joy that is a tight pennant race and “their” team being smack dab in the middle of it…

Rather, they would use the occasion to try to convince real lovers and understanderers of the game and their team that they would be better off if the team would listen to the rantings of a loose bunch of whiney, 20-20 armchair crymasters, of which the totaled baseball I.Q. of said bunch (with the excepton of course, of Larry The Legend, who after all, played baseball pretty good for NINE years) amounts to a pitcher’s mound of pork-and-beans…

These genii (who, also inexplicably hold 0 jobs in professional baseball) think it not just necessary to denigrate the job of the manager of “their” team, but also must denigrate the manager as a person as well, coming up with very, very juvenille names, the likes of which should have been abandoned after, oh, the 2nd grade or so…

Just think, real Braves fans… we’d have already clinched the World Series instead of being just in the top five teams in all of the majors, just inches away with a little less than a third of the season remaining, if these legendary bloggers had been running the team from day one… We’d have gotten to see a sterling 105-0 record… a manager who jumps up and down and throws fits… players who know their place and know they’d better produce each time, every time, or else be reamed out by the emotional manager in public…. sounds dreamy, doesn’t it…

DOB, can you please just end all of this and use your pull to get Liberty to fire all of the front of the house and the manager, and install these incredible baseball genii for perpetuity? Get them to put Lah-reee the Nine-Year Wunderkind in Wren’s place, and Ralphie, or even J-MAN in place of Fredi, where their ranting, raving, kicking-and-screaming mentality will surely keep the players on their edge…

( Aside to Ralphie: As usual, Ralphie, Baby, you’re right on top of it all…. you are indeed correct, sir… the 1st Amendment allows for ANYONE to make deluded, sophmoric, uninformed, boorish comments all they want to… thanks for being such a standard bearer for the Constitution as well as the runner-up to your daddy LAH-REEEEEE in the anusses of baseball legend )

Lah-reeeeeeeee!!!! Just re-read your 8:22… Seems you only address Ralphie when you respond? Is it because you think he’s a kindred spirit?

You seem to be conflicted about baseball managing… you seem to think that if you made the call, it would be the right one, all of the time… You seem to think that Fredi’s an empty head, because you, with the benefit of 20/20 armchair brilliance, would have always made the right call… I’ll clue you in, oh Nine-Year-Baseball-Terror, after I meekedly point out that you never, ever, ever take into account the EXECUTION by the players, nor do you ever, ever, ever acknowledge a brilliant play by the opposition, which may, on more than one or two occassions, have some bearing on how the call plays out….

I would think that, with the massive baseball knowledge, gleened over your nine-year-pretty-good-player-career, that you would have something to say about that, but you seem to be under the impression that if you were somehow hired by a major league team to manage (another clue for you… don’t hold your breath) that every one of the calls you make would be effortlessly executed and the opposition would have nothing to do with the outcome….

This is what gets me about you self-deluded experts… you don’t EVER take in to account the EXECUTION… if all plays were executed, you’d always be right, no?

Nine-year baseball wunderkinds should know this…

(A) Baseball is for the most part a very simple game… there are only so many ways a manager can call a situation… In some instances, a manager could pick from one or two, MAYBE three options… Whichever option he may pick, it all depends on the EXECUTION, or, more pointedly, the lack of execution, by your team or the opponent…. ALWAYS…. you with me, Mr. Legend?

(B) Even the best baseball players of all time did not and do not execute (particularly with the bat) MOST of the time…. Failing with the bat 70 fricking per cent of the time is considered very good… let that sink in, Mr. Omnipotent… a 70 % failure rate will keep you with a fat paycheck…. use your powers of deductive reasoning…. most of the time the batter will fail…. It’s what makes the game enjoyable and exciting for us poor old real fans, that knowledge that something good could happen (but if it doesn’t, that’s just the odds)… Many times, the player can smack the cover off a ball, but the opposition just happens to be in the right position to make the play…. There are MANY FACTORS, Genii!!

(C) The nature of baseball and human limitations dictates that whether you are John McGraw or Russ Nixon, you will probably make the same call in the same situation as any other person who happens to be REALLY qualified (as opposed to thinking that they are qualified because they “used to be really good”) enough to be hired as a big league manager… Successful managers are that way becaue of many factors, not the least of which they happen to have superior players, and they EXECUTE with more regularity than the opponent (which you will have to take into account if you are ever, ever, hired to manage a club… again, don’t hold your breath)… Successful managers keep a great clubhouse and dugout atmosphere…. Any of you brillia’ints really look at the players’ behavior in the Braves dugout…. these guys seem to live to play for each other… I will give that to Fredi, that he fosters a good atmosphere…

For all of that, IN REALITY, a successful manager is one who helps foster a good team chemistry and keeps his minions motivated to play at their highest levels (note to J-MAN… being “fiery” works for some, mostly not for others… ), and is lucky enough to be surrounded by players that already have that pride instilled in their psyche… I’d be willing to bet the whole lot of you armchairs that if you were to ACTUALLY TALK to the players in the Braves dugout, you would get a proper idea of how THEY think about him (not just what you THINK they think about him by watcing from your behind on a couch)…

You can safely conclude, that the team with the best players will USUALLY win, because they USUALLY out perform their opponents… Not always, though… That’s what makes baseball so magical… Humans being humans dictates that they don’t always execute, and to have every player executing at the same time, and your opponent not executing at the same time, well, it happens less than more… There is a lot of luck involved, indeed, that is necessary to win it all… It is an accomplishment of accomplishments to even make it to the series, and at that point, the team who happens to be executing the best will win, and the team that doesn’t execute as well will lose…. It’s always that way, Mr. Legend-in-your-own-mind, no matter what the manager does….

So, if you experts can’t enjoy the game, mainly because you can’t grasp the nature of it, you need to find pursuits that you can understand… you’d certainly be better people for it, and the folks who are REAL baseball fans could enjoy it without all of the idiot commentary and childish name-calling…

I just want to make a quick comment about the impressive work of Janish ever since Simmons broke his finger. It’s weird, but it just seems like he’s hitting alot better than his .203 average indicates. And man oh man has he done great work defensively. All of the routine plays, can turn a double-play with ease, and that play he made out behind short to rob Reyes of a bloop double on Wednesday night? Wow.

I can’t wait until we get Simmons back. But, in my opinion, the fact that there hasn’t been much commentary about Janish’s performance speaks volumes about the job that he has done as a fill-in for Simmons.

I’m a big fan of that Maholm trade because our rotation for years had been too right handed heavy. And look at his numbers he has an ERA lower than Hanson, Minor, Delgado, and Jurrjens. He eats up innings and plus he has been a Braves killer so we wont have to face him anymore. I like Reed Johnson also because he gets on base runs well and plays good defense. Reed will help out that bench that is hitting .173 in pitch hitting situations.

Yep, everybody has opinions and some folkses’ aren’t very well-informed (Less metal and more Beatles just might have a teeny effect, J-MAN, on your cognitive level)… so, in your esteemed eyes, posting opinions doesn’t count for me, does it? try some classical, too, AC… they say it helps the brain as well…. oh, and eat more fish!!!

fuzzmeister, someone else must’ve posted under my name (J-MAN is a prime suspect… these bogus posts always show up after he’s been rebutted…. look at the style of writing…. big clue… metal-headed, almost)… you will never see disparaging words from me about people who do something for a living that I, or anyone else on here, could never do… I’m a believer in encouragement, not disparagment, unless, of course, I am disparaging pseudo-baseball people for making absurd comments, a la the 20/20 Armchair Warriors… Strange behavior, isn’t it… trying to masquerade as someone else in order to disparage, when you do that well enough under your own name… Kinda feeble-minded, if you ask me, but not surprising… unless, of course, you thought I was talking about Chipper when I was talking to Lah-reeee…. FYI, Lah-reeee is the greatest baseball mind in the world, having derived his omnipotence from being a really good player for nine years…

Good for you, John… you’ve gone from being just another run-of-the-mill whiner to one of the self-proclaimed expert ubercrysters like the Legend-that-is-Larry… Lah-reeee has never been able to answer this, but you might… why is it you’re not managing in the big leagues?… if you could hold your attention span (and apparently, your nose) for the little while it takes to read a couple of dozen lines, you ought to finish…. might shed a little light on why you just don’t get it…
