Jerry

They DL’d Hanson today for a lower back issue. I’m guessing Medlen gets 2-3 more starts.

These things tend to work themselves out. Would be nice to give some guys a rest from time to time. Huddy’s bad foot, Hanson’s back and keep Sheets fresh.

I was thinking sitting Uggla for a couple of days might clear his head. Nothing else has worked and how long can we wait for him to get going…it’s August 1st.

Any ideas on here who we might pickup to replace Hinske if he doesn’t turn it around soon? The man is hurting the team right now.

It was nice to see Pastornicky get a few good AB’s this week. If he keeps this up, he might stick for the post season.

I agree Wayne. The Braves have a great situation that allows them to rest every starter between now and the playoffs to keep them fresher than our opponents.

Agreed on Uggla. But right now, I think Bourn needs a blow first. But when it comes time to sit Uggla, I’d still not put Prado at second, unless we have nobody else that can play there (read Pastornicky).

Different take

Not in favor of sitting anybody for rest right now. Its the playoff run and we are only 2.5 out. Best players that can help the team win needs to be in there.

When opportunity presents itself though get them out. Like tonight. 2 or 3 innings here or there add up.

Double digit hits…..for all but pitcher’s slot and you know who. You got to believe Uggs is hurting tonight….he won’t show it around the clubhouse….but, when he’s driving home later I bet that dude will really be feeling it. I do feel for ole Dan and, he’ll just try it again….August has got to be better.

If Pastornicky keeps on hitting, he should stick. But once Simmons gets back, can’t say the same for Wilson or Janish, and that’s a shame for Janish because he’s been great.

Pastornicki won’t be starting any games for the Braves anytime soon as long as Janish keeps fielding the way he has been, regardless of his hitting. Less it’s the 2nd game of a double header.

Pace

Mark – I think a day off every two weeks isn’t a bad thing right now – especially with Johnson. You’re talking about starting him twice a week – letting a regular starter take a day and PH if needed. 2 or 3 innings at a time are helpful, but you’re only able to do that with one, maybe two players – I know they get paid for 162/year, but Bourn and Prado have definitely tapered off the past couple of weeks – day off can’t hurt.

Jerry

August 1st, 2012

The thing is nolie, they had to go “defense” with the backup before because Pastornicky was so bad at it. It’s probably a crap shoot.

DS1

August 1st, 2012

I think Janish will be the eventual backup SS once Simmons returns. Pastornicky only stays if he proves he can play the outfield and second base. (and hit)

The way everyone else is hitting, it definitely takes a load off of Uggla. And once Simmons comes back, that’ll help too. And if something unspeakable happens and Uggla comes out of this thing he’s in and starts killing it, this whole team could be another “murderers row”. I know, it’s not likely to happen like that but we can hope. Last year we slumped at the wrong time, so this year I’m hoping we come together at the same time and take it to the end like the Cards did last year and the Giants the year before.

The days of players playing 162 games a year are past history. Most players can get rejuvenated by a day off once in a while. I’d sit Bourn tomorrow and again a couple more times between now and the end of the year. Same with Prado.

Uggla also needs to sit for a day or two, to see if it will help him break out of this funk.

But I agree that it’s hard to sit guys when you are winning. But those top 2 guys are struggling. Johnson can’t do much worse than they will for a game or two. That’s the beauty of having such a strong bench bat that can field his position.

As much as it hurts to have traded Vizcaino – and believe me, it’s gonna hurt down the road – a new day shines a positive light on this trade. Of course, the trade will only make sense if the Braves make the playoffs and go deeper than the first round.

However, one thing needs to be pointed out. Vizcaino went two seasons with the SAME elbow problem that ultimately required TJ surgery. This full disclosure is necessary because to hear others say it, Vizcaino was a laundry list of injuries. NOT TRUE. Two years, same elbow problem, one surgery.

If the Cubs don’t screw him up, Vizcaino will be under their control for five years with a team that will ultimately afford him… and the kid will be an All Star. This one’s really gonna hurt. The only way this will hurt less is if bats become more consistent, the starters continue to improve, and the middle bullpen rounds out just in time for a possible September run. Medlen looked AMAZING tonight, averaging just a smidge under 11 pitches per in his five innings, Maddux-style.

Now the 25 know that they have been invested. Let’s see what they can do now – and next month when it matters most.

What I would LOVE to see is Johnson start in CF for the Braves in the final two games against the Fish and spell Bourn in time for his Houston homecoming. Then, play the first two games against Houston in LF and rest Prado for a Sunday start.

Down the road, Johnson can play more LF and Prado can play more 2B. Uggla is absolutely stinkin’ upo the place and suffering from a severe case of McLouth-oma. Maybe he needs some Gwinnett time to work on his swing, but he is putrid.

Time to take “Fat Francisco” for a test drive and give Chipper more rest. The guy has been absolutely rakin’ unconscious as of late, and his bat needs to get more AB’s.

The way Chipper is hitting, no way does he miss any more time than he needs to. Juan Gone Francisco is nothing near the third baseman that Chipper is. But I like him as the caddy for now.

As to Uggla getting sent to Gwinnett, no way does that happen. Unless he goes on the DL and then goes down for a rehab stint. But no way does a team send their 13 million dollar second baseman to the minors.

And as far as I can tell, Uggla ain’t hurting us too much in this current hot streak. Give him a day or two off in the next week or so, to get his head straight. But he’ll never get going on the bench.

The Braves are having quite a Fish fry this season. They have won 8 of 10 games against the Marlins, outscoring them almost three to one, by a 59 to 20 margin.

The +39 run differential is the highest in baseball by any one team against another, and by a pretty wide margin. The Angels and White Sox have +31 run differentials against the Orioles and Indians, respectively.

Say what you will about the struggles of the Phils and Marlins, it is still impressive to see the Braves go out and pound the teams they should be pounding, night after night.

(It’s also nice to see the Phils light up Strasburg last night).

I don’t see a September swoon this year, unless we see a significant injury.

Last year, Chipper’s legs were shot by September and McCann never really seemed to recover from the July oblique strain.
Prado was never right after the staph infection.
Heyward, who struggled most of the year, actually started to come around a bit in the final weeks of the season, but was not nearly at the level he’s been over the last 50 games.
If we get Simmons back, I actually feel better about our shortstop production in September over what Agon gave us last year, but that may just be wishful thinking.
If Uggla could come around (am not counting on it), we could have no offensive problems at all in September.
I can’t explain what was wrong with Bourn last September. Hopefully, he won’t repeat it. (I doubt he does with his impending FA).

Starting pitching, while a challenge at times, should atually be better.
Hanson and JJ were done by September and we were rolling Lowe out for a loss every 5 days.

No comment about the bullpen – yet.
