Braves pull up pants and end long Monday skid

Whether it was wearing their pant legs rolled up to their knees, having Chipper Jones on Twitter, or Tommy Hanson taking his recent serendipity to the mound, the Braves finally ended their Monday curse.

After totaling just 18 runs while losing their first 12 Monday games this season, the Braves scored six in the first five innings of an 8-2 win against the Miami Marlins to open a four-game series Monday night at Turner Field.

It was the sixth consecutive win for the surging Braves, but their first Monday win since Aug. 22, 2011. They snapped an inexplicable streak of 16 consecutive Monday losses that included four during their September collapse.

“I think it was eight runs and 13 hits,” Jones said, laughing when asked whether it was the exposed socks or his Twitter status that was the curse-breaker. “For whatever reason we leave the bats at home on Mondays and I think everybody was a little tired of hearing about it so we played well tonight.”

Jason Heyward’s third-inning homer — his 17th of the season and second in two days — gave the Braves a 1-0 lead they never relinquished.

They scored four runs with two out in the fifth – a two-run double by Dan Uggla and two-run pinch single by Juan Francisco — to open a 6-1 lead and remained unbeaten since the 40-year-old third baseman became a social media maven.

That might be stretching it a bit, but Jones surprised everyone last week when he started a Twitter account — @RealCJ10 — in order to diffuse some bogus accounts others had set up with his name attached. Next thing he knew, old “Battle Axe” was having fun communicating with his many Twitter followers.

In a tweet Monday, he wrote: Monday bloody Monday! 0 fer 2012 on Mon and 5-0 on the twitta. Something has to give folks!

The Braves won for the 16th time in 21 games – and sixth in six with Jones on Twitter — to move to a season-high 14 games over .500 (58-44). They pulled to within 3-1/2 games of National League East leader Washington, which didn’t play Monday.

“It took 12 games to figure out it was just the socks?” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez joked. “No it wasn’t [my idea]. I don’t even know who it was, but whoever came up with it took a little bit too long to hang onto this thing.”

It was Jones’ suggestion that the team wear its pant bottoms up to the knees, old-school style with exposed socks. The only Brave who didn’t wear them up was Hanson, whose pant bottoms were down to his shoetops, like most players wear them these days.

“I didn’t really know until I was walking out [on the field], so they told me don’t worry about it,” Hanson said of his teammates. “My pants are all stretched out at the bottom anyway so…. I didn’t want to have to worry about my pants while I was trying not to walk seven guys.”

Hanson (12-5) worked out of early jams and allowed one run on six hits and three walks in five innings. This after beating the Marlins Wednesday when he allowed seven walks and seven stolen bases in five innings, but only one run.

The Marlins again littered the bases early against Hanson, who left the bases loaded in a scoreless second inning and left two on in a scoreless third. After stealing seven bases in eight tries against Hanson and catcher Brian McCann on Wednesday, the Marlins stole two in three attempts in the first three innings Monday.

After the first three innings, Hanson in his past eight innings – all against Miami — had allowed six hits (four doubles), 10 walks, nine stolen bases … but only one run.

In his past 10 starts before Monday, he was 6-1 despite a 4.95 ERA. The Braves scored five or more runs while he was in six of those games, and did again Monday.

“Finally got us win on a Monday,” said Hanson, who had only one “clean” inning with no walks or hits. “I’d love some more clean ones. It’s been a battle lately, but I felt a lot better with my fastball command today so hopefully I can just keep moving forward and keep getting better.”

He worked a perfect fourth inning before the Marlins scored on Jose Reyes’ RBI double in the fifth to cut the lead to 2-1. Martin Prado made a diving attempt and came up with the ball, but had trapped it.

Carlos Lee followed with a single to left field and speedy Reyes tested Prado’s arm. He came up firing and threw a perfect strike to McCann, who tagged Reyes to prevent the tying run.

“I didn’t think he had a snowball’s chance in hell to throw that guy out,” Jones said, “but he never quit on the play and made a throw right on the money. Mac [had a] great deek at home plate. And a great pick and put the tag down. So that was a momentum-shifter. That ties the game and who knows might get Tommy out of the game at that point. Kept us on top and we were able to chip away and finally put it away.”

The Braves blew the game open against left-hander Mark Buehrle (9-10) in the fifth. Heyward hit a leadoff single and Freddie Freeman doubled off the right-center wall to put two in scoring position with one out. After McCann walked, the slumping Uggla hit a bases-loaded double that bounced past left fielder Bryan Peterson, bringing in two runs.

One out later, Francisco pinch-hit for Hanson and hit a two-run single against Carlos Zambrano.

Hanson is still the weakest pitcher on the starting staff, which by itself says how strong the starting rotation is. Kris Medlin will get his start tomorrow and if he performs as I suspect, with the kind of pinpoint control that I saw from him in his last long relief performance, then the Braves have a starting staff that rivals the Washington Nationals.

Uggla got a timely 2-RBI double to give the Braves some margin for victory and it was a good sign, but he has to achieve a lot more to get back to the kind of form that would earn his enviable salary — the highest second baseman income in the NL! I hope he does, but he has to gain consistency at the plate also.

I don’t know if the Braves can catch the Nationals. The Nats are likely the best team in the NL and perhaps a rival for the Yankees for best team in baseball now. But, the Braves do appear to have the right mixture to make the wildcard and with the depth in starting pitching they seem to have now, it won’t matter as much who’s time it is in the rotation to win that single elimination game. Then, in a short series, baseball becomes that game of chance and the Braves would have as much chance as any team.

There is a lot of talk about the Dodgers and Cubs working on a trade that includes both Dempster and Soriano. It sure seems like that would be a great option for the Braves too. If they could move Soriano to left and Prado to second, they would give us more value on a day to day basis. Even the biggest Uggla fan around has to realize that the guy is wildly overrated and needs to sit for awhile. Dempster could also stabilize the rotation even if it is only for 10-12 starts over the balance of the season.

Dempster couldn’t Stabalize the End of the Bench, unless he ate a few moe Pancakes before coming in…. Medlin and Minor are solid ends of a Strong Front end Starting Staff… Hitters have to Hit; like they proved Tonight They CAN, and Pitching will be Fine. Let the Dodgers have Big Mouth Hanley, The Angels Land Greinke, and Dempster can stay Put, along with Josh Johnson. Braves To Acquire Reed Johnson, Paul Maholm

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 30 at 9:55pm CST]

The Cubs have traded Reed Johnson and Paul Maholm to the Braves, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweets. Four teams made offers for Johnson today, including the Pirates and Tigers, according to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com.

Johnson, 35, has a .307/.361/.452 batting line in 180 plate appearances this year. The right-handed hitter has played all three outfield positions for the Cubs and owns a career .313/.370/.469 line against left-handed pitching. He’s signed to a one-year, $1.15MM contract and will hit free agency after the season.

Geovany Soto has been traded to the Rangers in a separate move.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com first reported that Johnson had been traded (on Twitter). Morosi first reported Maholm’s role in the trade and first reported that the Braves were the other team involved.

You are going to always have some dumb bell like this with any trade. We got a pitcher that’s suited for the Ted and not Wrigley who is 5-0 in his last 7 starts and a bench hitter hitting .302 this year. We also just gave up 2 minor league pitchers that are not our top 4 guys. Man you’re dumb.

Also about johnson im sure all the nl will be scared to death to see him pinch hitting in the ninth. I want power on the bench not a slap hitting outfielder with little power or speed. All of you Medlin lovers need your head examined. I like Medlin too but I would rather have an established starter than a guy starting for the first time in 2 years. Medlin has not been all that great as a long reliever this year. You’re basing this love for Medlin as a starter on what he did 2 years ago and there’s no guarantee he will be that good. He wasn’t when they sent him down to be a starter. I want the lefty that’s 5-0 in his last seven starters with a 1.50 ERA. Not the experiment.

So the Braves probably will get the two players for one or more named players….and a player to be named later.

Hey ding dong, my Dad’s been dead for 15 years and I probably have a son your age and have probably watched baseball for longer than you have been shaving. And also to enlighten you some. teams don;t back deadline trades for power hitters that sit on the bench. The BRaves were looking for a guy to replace Diaz and that’s what they got. Johnson has a career .283 average and is hitting .302 this year. You want the bat off your bench to get the big hit with a runner in scoring position. Here are Medlen’s (with an E) current stats…

1-1 record
2.48 ERA
38 games pitched
54 innings pitched
46 hits allowed
13 walks in 54 innings
36 strikeouts in 54 innings

I hate giving up Viz but hey Im not mad at this trade. Malholm has an option for next year so if he does his thing, we can pick it up. He has an almost 50% ground ball rate which will bode well in our ball park. Johnson is hitting real well and he is a very decent defensive outfielder. Plus our bench sucks so his 300 avg will certainly help out. I dont care if he doesnt yank it out the park. Most of the time when we pinch hit, its because runners are on base so a few line drive singles should produce a few runs. Decent trade without giving up too much. I know Viz will do well. Keep in mind though he has been traded twice in his young career and now he will be coming off tommy john.

Brooklyn….

That was a trade to get Chipper into the playoffs one more time. Viz…if he gets healthy….just might make you cry pitching for the Cubs long after Chipper is gone. But that is what you do as a GM of a team that wants to win now……example……Detroit trading a young John Smoltz for an Alexander to try to win that year….they didn’t….and Smoltz made them cry all the way to the Hall of Fame. Not saying Viz will do that….but he may shut some Braves down in the future….and he may shut his arm down permanently next year as well. He is a risk….worth taking.

Don Green

Outstanding trade for the Braves in my opinion. Maholm is a very solid middle of the rotation, junk balling lefty, a Tom Glavine like style. Obviously not with those results, but style wise. Johnson is a versatile 4th OF, very fast and can play all 3 spots. Frees up Prado to play 2B and 3B when needed.

Contract wise, Johnson is a free agent making only $1 million. Maholm has a $6.5 million club option for next year. You can keep him at an ok price or let him go depending on how he does. Basically just for Vizcaino. Chapman is not MLB quality. You keep all of your best pitching prospects.

Now, all of the analyst on all of the networks say this is a great move and may put us over the top against the Nationals but you guys would rather give Medlin this shot that you think he is entitled to. No guarantee that Vizcaino will ever be the same pitcher after surgery. I love this trade. Maholm is a solid starter who has already beat the Braves this year. Johnson is an upgrade for the bench both offensively and defensively. Medlen will be solid in the bullpen. If Maholm does not work out as a starter, which he will, Medlen can always start. Maholm has a reasonable team option for 2013. This trade makes a lot of sense and makes this team better.

No one said this wasnt a very good move. We were simply stating that we were excited to see Medlen get another start. He showed a lot of promise and a lot of talent in 2012, and since working hard to come back, while he’s very effective and very big for us in the pen, we all know he would rather start, so it was exciting to see that he would finally have a chance. Cool your jets

Kerry B….

All I posted is a rebuttal to you saying “Medlen has not been great as a long reliever.” You were and are wrong about that. If Medlen pitches 5 shutout innings on Tuesday….the Braves are facing a delimma….but I am positive he is headed back to the pen no matter what he does on Tuesday….after this trade….

Question: The Braves have to make two moves….who goes? Diaz is on the DL….so JJ and who else goes?? I guess JJ and the fast OF they just called up from AAA…..forgot his name at the moment.

If Paul Maholm comes in and wins 8-9 games to finish the season and helps get us in the playoffs I really don’t care if Medlin ever gets a start. What are you going to say if Medlin starts tomorrow night and gives up 5 runs and we lose? You’ll say, “Man, I’m glad we made that trade”.

You maybe right about Viz, 2 years ago I liked him more than Randall or Teheran. Circumstances have changed since then and stuff happens. Viz may make us regret this deal, but I’ll take it for what could happen in the present. Gotta give to get in this league and i feel like we got more than we gave!

Still think JJ goes tommorow, to a pitching hungry Toronto team which is still in it.

And Medlen was 6-2 for the Braves in 2010…..with a 3.68 ERA….14 starts….before going down with his arm injury. He was pitching very well when he went down….as a starter.

8-9 wins? Those are some lofty expectations. I would be fine it he continued his 3.74 era the rest of the way. He will need some help from the bats to get those Wins.

It may not be the BIG deal many wanted, but I like it, especially at this prices. It supplies needed Starting pitching (and a lefty) and right handed pinch hitter and backup OF. We’ve been trying to acquire Johnson for a couple of seasons now. So, the price in players was OK, plus Maholm can be brought back and Johnson may fill Diaz’s role next year. Great job, Wren and staff!

Reed Johnson’s a career .284 hitter, mostly singles and doubles, doesn’t steal many bases, but plays all 3 OF spots pretty well. His average this year against lefties is the key — .333. Also, he got off to a slow start overall but hit .333 in June and .371 in July.

Maholm is 62-79 in his career, with a 4.30 ERA, but his ERA in 2011 and 2012 is 3.69 in 282.2 innings, which isn’t bad for a starter.

Tampa Gator, You are betting on Medlin being being as good as he was 2 years ago before having major elbow surgery. I’d rather have the established guy to hinge the rest of my season on. Especially with Hanson not pitching that great right now.

Ok with the trade but those who think the braves have great depth in their system its not true…this is as bad as their minor league system has been in years due to the drafting in the last 4 to 5 years. All the write up we see don’t even mention the braves system anymore….we used to be the talk of the league.

And youre betting that hes not going to be, which his work in extended innings this year has proven otherwise. His control is still there, he still has a very good change up, and rarely walks batters. So the question is, what happens when his line tomorrow night looks like a 5 IP/ 6 K/ BB/ ER? Dont you think we could use Medlen as more than a long reliever when thats what Martinez is for? And especially with Hanson reeling to find his stuff?

Hats off to Wren, this is a solid trade! Maholm’s fastball can hit 90 on the gun, and he has a great variety of pitches – including a wicked slider. His ERA for July is 1.01. And he’s not a rental, has a $6.5 mil option for next year, which is relatively cheap for a pitcher of his quality. Reed Johnson is a solid 4th outfielder, but his real value may be as a pinch-hitter, where he is arguably the best in the National League this year.
Hate to see Vizcaino and his 100 mph fastball go, but no guarantees after TJ surgery. This is gonna really help the Braves!

Thanks for the late night work, DOB and CR!

Great trade! Maholm and Johnson for two minor leaguers, even if one was a top-rated prospect. And that top-rated prospect – who knows what he’ll be when he comes back from Tommy John? He might be the best thing since Sandy Kofax, or he might be horrible. One can never tell. I hope it’s the first (as long as he doesn’t pitch against us!), but there is no guarantee.
