Vizcaino had Tommy John in spring training, but last season was one of #Braves’ big four untouchable pitching prospects. #Cubs
I was referring to medlen with that post because the moron above said a 3.65 era was apparently awful.
But yes, completely agree with you that Maholm will be good for us now that hes in a bigger park and a better hitting team. One or zero earned runs in his last 7, pretty darn good.
OK… so Vizcaino and Chapman for Maholm and Reed. That works for me. I hope Vizcaino recovers from his TJ surgery and does well in Chicago but I think its a good move for the braves.
It’s pretty pathetic that everyone is reporting this trade and we have yet to get a comment or story from the Braves beat writer. Wtf! Tell us who was in the trade or if you don’t know then tell us that you don’t know or can’t say. Better than ignoring it. Morons.
Kerryb. Unlike you i watch baseball and dont just look at stats. His avg fastball is 87. Just how many pitchers have sustained success. He is a back end of the rotation pitch at best and i had rather and medlin in the rotation and pick up bull pin help. Also about johnson im sure all the nl will be scared to death to see him pinch hitting in the ninth. I want power on the bench not a slap hitting outfielder with little power or speed. He is by no means a great defensive outfielder and would not take the place of any of the guys we already have. You sir or dear or young man on your dads computer have no clue what you are talking about,
Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino for Paul Molholm and Reed Johnson. We really didn’t give up much of anything. Vizcaino had Tommy-John surgery so the Cubs are going to have to be patient with him. This is a good trade.
Remember folks, the alternative was Randal Delgado for Ryan Dempster. That deal would have sucked bad.
If you look at who we gave up this was a great trade by Wren. A back of the bullpen guy and an injured pitcher for a solid left handed starter and a good right handed bat off the bench and backup outfielder.
If it is Vizcaino in the trade it is a bad move unless the Braves medical people don’t think he can comeback from the surgery. Maholm is a journeyman and Reed Johnson is a backup outfielder. No way I would give up Vizcaino for that assuming he returns healthy. Neither of these guys will put the Braves over the top.
10:41pm: Arodys Vizcaino, who had Tommy John surgery this spring, is the other player going to Chicago, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter).
All of you Medlin lovers need your head examined. I like Medlin too but I would rather have an established starter than a guy starting for the first time in 2 years. Medlin has not been all that great as a long reliever this year. You’re basing this love for Medlin as a starter on what he did 2 years ago and there’s no guarantee he will be that good. He wasn’t when they sent him down to be a starter. I want the lefty that’s 5-0 in his last seven starters with a 1.50 ERA. Not the experiment.
I believe the only way you can trade a player on the DL is to trade him….as a “player to be named later”…..do an exam when he is healthy….and substitute another player if the other team rejects him. So the Braves probably will get the two players for one or more named players….and a player to be named later.

Again Vizcaino will be one of those guys guys we say why did we put this guy in a trade. Keith. No I don’t read his tweets unless they are on the AJC Sports page. How hard is it for him to post a quick comment in this blog if they are actually working on a story?
Medlen is just more valuable as a reliever right now. One of the better bridge guys in the league. Rather have him in during a tied game in 6th or 7th than any of our other relievers. Maybe EOF (Irish) is the exception.
Maddux was 93 to 94 in his prime and one of the best in the history of baseball which would be part of the how many you have used a hof for your example good job.
Kerryb. Unlike you i watch baseball and dont just look at stats. His avg fastball is 87. Just how many pitchers have sustained success. You sir or dear or young man on your dads computer have no clue what you are talking about,
Hey ding dong, my Dad’s been dead for 15 years and I probably have a son your age and have probably watched baseball for longer than you have been shaving. And also to enlighten you some. teams don;t back deadline trades for power hitters that sit on the bench. The BRaves were looking for a guy to replace Diaz and that’s what they got. Johnson has a career .283 average and is hitting .302 this year. You want the bat off your bench to get the big hit with a runner in scoring position. Not a power hitter who may strike out in that situation.
Putting Medlen in the rotation doesnt hurt us as much as you people make it out to. After all, we have Cristhian Martinez, who is actually our long reliever, and has looked very good for the last couple months. And if Venters can actualyl be as good as he has been since coming back, losing Medlen to the rotation isnt a big deal at all
Blue Ridge, you are proving that you know nothing at all. Greg Maddux only dreamed of hitting 93 or 94 on the gun. His best fastball may have been 90-91. Now, your Momma is calling you because it’s past your bedtime. Get off the basement computer.
“Medlin has not been all that great as a long reliever this year. You’re basing this love for Medlin as a starter on what he did 2 years ago and there’s no guarantee he will be that good.”
@KerryB……
Here are Medlen’s (with an E) current stats…
1-1 record
2.48 ERA
38 games pitched
54 innings pitched
46 hits allowed
13 walks in 54 innings
36 strikeouts in 54 innings
I would say those are fairly great numbers for a middle to long reliever.
I hate giving up Viz but hey Im not mad at this trade. Malholm has an option for next year so if he does his thing, we can pick it up. He has an almost 50% ground ball rate which will bode well in our ball park. Johnson is hitting real well and he is a very decent defensive outfielder. Plus our bench sucks so his 300 avg will certainly help out. I dont care if he doesnt yank it out the park. Most of the time when we pinch hit, its because runners are on base so a few line drive singles should produce a few runs. Decent trade without giving up too much. I know Viz will do well. Keep in mind though he has been traded twice in his young career and now he will be coming off tommy john.
Congradulations to Frank Wren, he hit a Gand Slam tonight, I almost had a heart attack when I heard Delgado was in the trade, I can sleep good tonight, maybe not as good as DOB is sleeping right now, where is our star beat reporter on the biggest story of the last two years.
Maddux rarely ever hit the anything above 90 with his fastball. but the movement made him good. It was sarcasm saying he was “decent” but using the argument that you gotta throw hard is proven wrong just bring up mad dog.
I dont know about replacing him, espcially not permanently, but maybe long enough to send him down or at l east sit him a start or two so he can get the cobwebs out of his head? Yes, definitely a nice problem to have
With the majority of Braves starting pitchers averaging 6 innings or less ,Medlen is more valuable pitching out of the pen . Better to have him pitch 6 innings a week out of the pen than 5 or 6 innings in one start every fifth day.

I guess they will see it is
Now:
Medlen is the arm in the BP that stays
We get a starter who’s a lefty and HOT
And Reed off the bench.

Yeah, while Medlen isn’t as proven cause we haven’t seen him…I’ll admit I was VERY EXCITED about seeing him start.
What happens if Medlen rocks it?! Replacing Hanson? A nice dilemma indeed.

“Medlin has not been all that great as a long reliever this year. You’re basing this love for Medlin as a starter on what he did 2 years ago and there’s no guarantee he will be that good.”
@KerryB……

Medlen is just a better reliever than SP right now. Medlen is the Prado of the pitching staff, as one of my fellow posters said last week!

Maddux rarely ever hit the anything above 90 with his fastball. but the movement made him good. It was sarcasm saying he was “decent” but using the argument that you gotta throw hard is proven wrong just bring up mad dog.

With the majority of Braves starting pitchers averaging 6 innings or less ,Medlen is more valuable pitching out of the pen . Better to have him pitch 6 innings a week out of the pen than 5 or 6 innings in one start every fifth day.
