Next for Braves: Miami Marlins

Series preview: vs. Marlins

When (TV): 7:10 p.m. Monday-Thursday (SPSO)

Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5

Probable starting pitchers:

Monday: Braves RH Tommy Hanson (11-5, 4.39 ERA) vs. LH Mark Buehrle (9-9, 3.31)

Tuesday: Braves RH Kris Medlen (1-1, 2.48) vs. RH Ricky Nolasco (8-9, 4.80)

Wednesday: Braves RH Ben Sheets (3-0, 0.50) vs. RH Carlos Zambrano (5-9, 4.54)

Thursday: Braves LH Mike Minor (6-7, 5.18) vs. RH Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 1.69)

About the Braves:

Batting: Chipper Jones went 2-for-4 with a home run Sunday to make him 12-for-35 (.343) over his past 10 games, with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs. Juan Francisco hit a 435-foot second-deck home run on Wednesday in Miami, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He’ll likely start at third base the second game of the series, giving Jones a rest day. Jason Heyward has homered twice in the past four games, including Wednesday in Miami off Wade LeBlanc.

Pitching: In his last start Wednesday against the Marlins, Hanson became the first pitcher to record seven or more walks (seven), seven or more stolen bases (seven), seven or more strikeouts (seven) and still earn a win since Bob Feller did it for the Indians (with 17 strikeouts in nine innings) in 1936. Hanson is going for a career-high 12th win. Kris Medlen will make his first start of the season in place of struggling Jair Jurrjens on Tuesday.

Miscellaneous: The Braves are 6-2 against the Marlins this season, including 2-1 last week in Miami. The Braves are 0-12 on Mondays.

About the Marlins:

Batting: Shortstop Jose Reyes is riding a 16-game hitting streak, while batting .339 (21-for-62) with three doubles, one triple, four home runs, seven RBIs and four stolen bases. Emilio Bonifacio hit his first home run of the year to drive in the game-winning run in a 2-1 win over the Braves last Monday. He is hitting .273 (9-for-33) with four runs and six stolen bases in the past nine games.

Pitching: The Braves will miss ace Josh Johnson, who one-hit them for six innings on nine strikeouts last Monday, this series. Buehrle gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings in a 4-3 Braves win on Tuesday, giving up four walks and five hits. After giving up only one earned run in 14 2/3 innings to win his first two starts of the month, Buehrle has given up six earned runs in 10 innings over his last two, taking a loss and a no-decision.

Miscellaneous: Left fielder Logan Morrison was placed on the disabled list Sunday with right knee inflammation and could require season-ending surgery. After losing a series at home to the Braves, the Marlins took two of three from the Padres, including a 10-inning, 5-4 win on Sunday.

An article by Jason Stark of ESPN on the trade rumors prompted me to look up Jeff Francoeur’s stats (some potential KC trade partners in the article allegedly wanted more than him).

Francoeur: .238 BA, .275 OBP, 9 HR, 35 RBI, 91 H, 75 K, 16 BB in 382 AB

P’stealh: EXACTLY! Use a double negative to create a positive! I can hardly stand the red shirts (which belong on Reds, Red Sox or Cardinals) but they might just turn the Monday thing around. Couldn’t hurt. (Then I might make one of the remaining Friday night games too — but not if they’re wearing those durn red shirts!)

Hope somebody in Braves FO noted the suggestion in one of these blogs yesterday — make a call to Javier Vasquez. He and Roger McD had a good thing going here before Derek Lowe’s contract forced Braves to trade Vasquez, and the move back to NYY didn’t work for him… maybe he can find it again if he’s willing to work here. Sheets, Oswalt, Petitt prove it can be done, Javy!

Who are some relievers the Braves may be targeting?

I’ve yet to hear anything about the relief…had heard lots on the starters and a little on the bats.

Thoughts?

go BRAVES! :)

Game over for the Phillies for a very long time, huge payroll and traded away future prosepcts.

Hope the Phillies keep Rueben Amaro as General Manager for a long time

Amber Girl, definitely. He’s got a 2.92 ERA (3.17 in his career) and a 1.08 WHIP (matches his career). And that’s with having to pitch at Coors Field. He’s got a 5.12 ERA at home, but only 0.50 ERA on the road. He’s also on contract for next season at a reasonable price, and has an option for 2014.

Enough about our pitching,if the group we have performs to their potential,we will be fine. Target a right handed bat with some pop as we are too left handed, preferably a left fielder.

Mr Rick What is WHIP?

Rick

Yeah they are looking for a bench bat. Only name I’ve seen mentioned is Scott Hairston. WHIP is walks plus hits per inning pitched.

Doubt the TIgers would trade him, but I’d like to see O. Infante back in a Braves uniform; good bat, plays multiple positions.

Keith, I also forgot about Wade Davis. I’m guessing they would put him in the bullpen but they could just as well stretch him out to go in the rotation. He hasn’t started a game this season though.

I think Fredi needs to borrow an idea from Billy Martin..pull the batting order out of a hat.
Either that or sacrifice a live chicken….or turn on the sprinklers and get us a rainout !
How do you explain winless on Monday? Crazy game!

Why do we need bullpen Mr Rick?

Rick

July 30th, 2012
11:51 am

Well if Medlen goes to the rotation, that creates a hole in the bullpen. Even if they land a SP, they still would probably want another veteran in the bullpen who they can expect more consistency out of compared to someone like Varvaro or Avilan. Venters has obviously struggled as well this season and there’s no guarantee on Moylan coming back and being successful.

My first reaction to the Becket rumor is NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!!!!!. But then I wondered what if Boston ate whatever salary is left on his contract and took JJJ off our hands plus throw in a few buckets of chicken and a keg of beer? Tempting but still a NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!!!!!.

Bones is 1 homerun from catching Dave Winfield on the all time HR list at 465. We need Bones to pick up the slack from Uggla’’s slump.
