Nolie — Maybe yes maybe no on Frenchy’s 06 season.
I did make a mistake on his doubles he had 24 doubles and 6 triples.
I would want my middle of lineup guys to have the OPB of at least .310.
If RBI;s are needed to wain games and they are, I cannot see how they should not be used for player evaluation. They are the same to me.
There have been high OPS guys who have been low run producers, example of that is J.D. Drew. He had two real good run producting yrs in his career, 2004 with the Braves and 06 with the Dodgers.
He was a low run producer in his Boston yrs, never had as many s 25 HR or 70 RBI.
Even Frenchy in his worst season produced 71 RBI’s. You got to have RBI’s to win games.
.449 SLG covers that. Not terrible but not what I would call “good.”
To each one’s choice but I don;t pay that much attention to slugging percentage.
He was not great that yr, but there have been alot more 100 RBI guys who had better yrs than Frenchy did that year.
Generally a 100 plus RBI guys is having a good year. There may be exceptions to the rule like a couple of those Dave Kingman years (he hit .204 one yr and drve in 99) but that is more exception than the rule.
you don’t pay much attention to Slg% or OBP but those are two two”purest” indicators of a hitter’s prowess, the ability to get on base and extend innings and the power to drive in many runs.
as for team, year after year, the teams with the highest OBP are the teams that score the most runs, exactly the same again this year in the NL; the 5 teams with the highest OBP are also the 5 teams that have scored the most rums.
The RBI is a contextual stat. It tells a story, but it does very little to tell you about the value of the hitter. JD is a great example of that as well. His OPS 08 and 09 was .927 and .914. I don’t think anyone would argue those aren’t very good offensive seasons. Similar HR and BA numbers as 2006 with the Dodgers, but the RBI numbers in Boston just weren’t there. In Boston he mainly batted 2nd and 6th whereas in LA he mostly batted 3rd and 4th.
Another thing with JD is his health. That monster season he had in Atlanta he had more than 100 more PA that at any other point in his career. That definitely helps those counting stats as well.
Frenchy as we all know does not walk so he ends up putting a lot of baseballs in play. This of course will result him knocking in a few runners whether or not he gets a hit or not. Grounder to 2nd, fly to left, and HR all result in an RBI. If you were to insert JD in to every one of Frenchy’s ABs over the years I don’t know if he would have as many RBI. I would guess probably so. One thing is for certain though, a team with Drew (when he was playing of course) will score more runs because not only does he hit, but also because he gets on base which creates opportunities for other players down the lineup.
That will be my longest post for the year. I’m sure you’ve all moved onto a different conversation by the time I post this.
Chipper on getting some help before trade deadline Tuesday:
“You always like to see something. You can always use more pitching. I think our everyday lineup is pretty well set. Maybe a piece on the bench or a piece in the bullpen, who knows? Lot of stuff going on with the starting pitchers, trying to get ourselves a starter. I’m sure that if something can be done, Frank’s in on it. We can’t worry about that, though. If they help us, great. If they don’t, we’ll be fine.”
If we can get anything out of Tommy, I think this team will be fine. Really hoping what we are seeing from Minor isn’t some sort of mirage. Another starters would be nice though…
This Brewer BP is awful It’s to bad they did not help us. Oh well if Warn can get us an impact starter! not named Ryan Demp I think we will be able to over take the Nats in first place in the east.
That Loe guy is apparently one of the few who has an ERA below 4 on that staff ….. so naturally he didn’t pitch in the 8th inning. Instead they went with KRodriguez, Axford, and Veras who now all have ERAs over 5
I know Uggla has been ripped on here daily. That is stating the obvious. But he summed it up pretty well in regards to his attitude. And yes its cliche’ but true, hustle never slumps. So many guys when they are going thru a slump start dogging it. Uggla hustles and busts his tail every day. He is not going to dog it.
Great to see a sweep on this homestand. Now let’s take care of the fish in another……sweep that is. Maybe we can run the table this time before we take to the road again.
@Disgusted you are correct. If Uggla can turn in a hot August, Sept and Oct then all will be forgiven. It’s safe to say he is hundred times more frustrated than everyone of us on here combined. This game will jack with your head as bad as golf when things are going bad. But yeah we have witnessed when he gets hot, he can carry the entire team on his shoulders. Hopefully it will pop up going down the stretch and into the playoffs.
If we can get anything out of Tommy, I think this team will be fine. Really hoping what we are seeing from Minor isn’t some sort of mirage. Another starters would be nice though…
@Danga — What we are seeing out of Minor appears to be maturity and a kid who learned from a very adverse stretch. Instead of getting more overwhelmed, he got better & he has to be given credit for that.
We need more of a sample size to know how good he will really be. But even before this yr, he did have some good games, not bad stats to date for a young lefty.
I am not expecting an ACE, not expecting David Price but a guy who can consistently win 12 to 15 and pitch 200 IP, and give consistent quality starts. That would be a very solid MLB career.
WOW 5 in a row. Happy days are here again! I notice when the team is playing well FREDI has fewer oppertunitys to make stupid moves that cost us games. We still have time to catch WAS if other teams would help us some. WOW that CHIPPER just keeps on doing it.
Chipper with some good quotes about Fredi. How does that happen? baseball people should know who is pitching. On his scoreboard watching, he can watch all he wants.
As for Tommy, if its Tommy Hanson well, we have gotten something from him this yr.
Remember that in 2010, though he was not winning games he was pitching well, he had a better yr than that 10-11 record. W-L is not meangless, but it does not always tell the whole story, so Tommy can pitch in late season when he is healthy.
Again, not an ACE after injury but still has enough stuff to be solid. Mid rotation guys do get you to the post season.
I just want to get to the NLDS. If we get there that is a GREAT season given all circumstances.
I still say if the Braves want to help their rotation and /or Bullpen , bench. Trade for the Cubs Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson.
Maholm has in his last 10 appearances:8 quality starts, and one relief appearance with no runs allowed. In his last 43 innings he has allowed on 5 runs. He can pitch well out of the pen if needed.
Reed Johnson gives us a RH hitter with a .333 lifetime avg., .379 OBP, .543 SLG. and .923 OPS against LHers.
The Twins are listening to offers for Denard Span, but won’t move him unless they get a Major League starter in return, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports
If the Rays trade James Shields, they’d be looking to exceed the package of prospects the Brewers obtained for Zack Greinke, according to Jon Heyman
George – Let me get this straight – When the players do their jobs and win, Fredi just didn’t have a chance to screw things up, but if the players don’t do their job and lose, it’s all Fredi’s fault?
Everybody knows how much I pile on Uggla for his virtual all-season slump. But the last time he had a great game was against the Nationals in that great comeback. He didn’t get another hit that series, but I didn’t say anything. I figured his contributions in that comeback gave him a free pass. And since that series, I really haven’t said a lot because I’ve said it all before and I don’t wanna beat a dead horse with the whole issue. If he could just average 1 lousy hit every 4 at bats, I would be satisfied. I think the biggest thing is that I would just like to think when he steps up to the plate that he has a good chance to do something good. He hasn’t given us that feeling. Here’s hoping that he does come outta it soon and if not, I hope Fredi does the right thing with him in the playoffs.
Let’s make a deal…….Tuesday one minute before midnight if that’s the dead-line, that is.
I hope we make some kind of deal. An OF wouldn’t be too bad (Cody Ross hint hint), but I’d also take a RHRP and a backup 1B/OF (like Hinske) if we can’t land a starter. Maybe Mejia gets a chance???
It would be something if Uggla just totally bombs till a couple weeks left in the reg season and just takes off and carries this team to the division and beyond that and carries them through the post season.
Potential WS MVP?????? Hey, strange things do happen.
The Brewers bullpen may be the worst in baseball. This is going to be similar to 1999 with the Braves & Mets I have a feeling. The Nationals will beat every other team they play because their schedule is an absolute joke & the Braves will just have to beat them head to head to gain any ground.
On DAN UGGLA it is hard it relise what a bad hitter he is, but FRANK WREN had no way of knowing it when he signed him to that contract. But still DAN’s SA and OPS are higher than OMAR’s when he was with MIA. FREDI is right DAN still gives 100% effort.
Hey, Disgusted, I’d be happy if he contains his outbursts to the six remaining tilts we have with the NATS. That four game cushion they have over us is pretty much the difference in the standings. I say we win five of the last six with them and even the score.
BTW, MINOR is picking up his game significantly.
Now if HANSON would follow suit, we’d be in fat city with BEN SHEETS in the rotation.
Looks like more surgery for HUDSON in the off season for bone spurs, but the guy can still get it done. He’s a warrior to go out every time with that type of excruciating pain. TIP O’ THA” CAP to HUDDY!
Correia is a ten year vet and 31 years old, still putting up numbers that y’all rant about Delgado putting up at age 22. Low K rate, low K to BB rate, mediocre WHIP and a plus 4 ERA, both for the year and his career.
What FRANK should do is reschedlue tomorrows game to make a day, night double header on tuesday, saveing us a sure loss tomorrow, shame to have to end a winning streak just because it is Monday.
Looks like more surgery for HUDSON in the off season for bone spurs, but the guy can still get it done. He’s a warrior to go out every time with that type of excruciating pain. TIP O’ THA” CAP to HUDDY! richbrave
Did you hear that he was having surgery for that? I certainly hope not. Several times in the last decade, I’ve had bone spurs, either in my knees or feet. The last time, I had severe achilles tendonitis in both heels brought on by spurring. My wife told me originally that she heard that you can take advil for a couple of weeks and it would dissolve the spurs. Since then, that’s what I’ve done and it works like a charm. Advil is great.
The older one has had some scuttle-butt about being picked in the top three rounds, but just talk in a gale of wind.
The fifteen year old is holding his own, improving slightly.
The one-year old has a bat in hand, and also chunks everything remotely shaped like a baseball or football. So far he’s busted a ceramic wren-house, my wife’s prized maracas from Cuba, and two paper weights that fortunately caused no damage to anything else.
At three, we’ll set up the tee-ball stand and get the ‘hit-a-way’ going. He loves ball of any type at this point. Sees a game on the tube and says, ‘ball’ and gestures with his middle finger to the screen. Heh! that’s his version of pointing.
Truly, I wouldn’t. Meds can do that… I’m just wondering if FW feels pressure to add a starter, this guy might be cheap to get. He could start, Meds to the pen, and JJ goes to bye-bye land.
I probably wouldn’t want Buddy pitching the eighth or nionth, but no reason he couldn’t pitch the fifth or sixth on a regular basis – can’t leave it all to Martinez now that Meds is going to the rotation and it looks like Durbin could pitch the seventh and EOF the eighth and Venters in less leveraged situation until he returns to Venterhood.

No thanks for Shields, and hell no on Span.

I’ll take it. Not likely but could be.

Honestly? Why bother.
