Medlen I would give the opportunity to start next season but he’s not going in the rotation this season IMO.
Something you have to remember about Medlen’s so called being stretched out experience. Minor obviously was getting drilled when they sent Meds to Gwinnett. Simultaneously Delgado was really inconsistent at the time(Tampa game and forgot who else and had back to back mediocre efforts). That’s your 4 and 5 starters who you had major concerns about. On top it, the day Medlen got sent down they lost their 8th game in a row. Desperation call, maybe. Little impulsive, maybe. Can’t blame FO for sending him to Gwinnett. I truly feel that the organization does not want him starting and only out of true desperation he would be in the rotation. Maybe he starts Tuesday, but can’t see a following start.
Listen, I haven’t read the blog, but I suggest the Braves trade Uggla to Philadelphia for Shane Victornio. Move Prado to second. Have Victorino played center after Bourne bolts. Philly can move Chase Utley to third and play Uggla at second. Trade for Clayton Richard. Fire Frank Wren and Freddie Gonzales. Name Chipper the manger. Let Cox GM the remainer of the season.
Team is not playing great, they are playing good baseball. They beat up a terrible Marlin team and a Phillie team that basically has quit. Philly got a couple of lucky breaks beating a horrible Brewer team late and people mistook that for them getting possibly back into the playoff race. Braves are a good team, they put a fork into the Phils as good team should do. They also got 5 hits each of the first 2 games. Team can use some help both starting pitcher and a bat that can spell a starter.
Dumpster either want to go to L.A or remain with the Cubs, he is not worth the aggravation.
As for Spann, he is not as good as Bourn, but with his $$$$$$ you pay him, its a worthwhile tradeoff for what you have to pay Bourn in FA.
Bourn is having maybe his career yr.
And as previously said, more $$$$$$$$$$ to keep Mac and Prado. Also note that with expanded interleague play, we could see the N.L. going to the DH, almost has to happen.
According to some on here, if we don’t hear the rumors then Wren is sitting on his hands. When Wren doesn’t pull off the trade, then its his fault and only his fault. Of course there is not a GM on the other line equally making a decision.
NL may not go to the DH but it will be used a lot more for obvious reasons. Don’t be surprised if some NL teams add a DH type player next year. Maybe not a Big Papi style but pretty close.
Not worth the aggravation, making the guy sound like Yunel. Looking WAY too much into what happened last week. Like the stock market, can’t get too emotional when it comes to trading for personel. Dempster would get a louder standing O than AGOn received.
Phillies Could Be “Most Active Sellers” By Steve Adams [July 29 at 7:58pm CST]
The Phillies entered this weekend needing to perform well in a critical series against the division rival Braves. Instead, they were swept and now appear to be in the position to sell off several pieces. ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets that the Phillies could be baseball’s “most active sellers” in the next two days, and that they’ve laid the groundwork for several trades. Olney’s colleague Jayson Stark hears from several teams that the Phillies could make 2-3 trades prior to Tuesday’s deadline, though they’ve yet to officially declare themselves sellers (Twitter link).
CSNPhilly.com’s Jim Salisbury agrees that selling is likely, and runs down several of the possibilities for the Phillies in the coming days. Salisbury writes that Shane Victorino is the “most likely” Phillie to be dealt, and lists the Giants, Pirates, Reds and Dodgers as possible destinations for Victorino. Interest in Victorino was said to be “heating up” as recently as yesterday.
The Reds have also inquired on Juan Pierre, and both the Orioles and Cardinals are potential destinations for Joe Blanton according to Salisbury. He also says that Hunter Pence could be moved if GM Ruben Amaro Jr. is blown away by an offer, and speculates that Ty Wigginton would fit on several teams looking for bench help.
Salisbury reiterates that the Phillies are likely to keep Cliff Lee for the time being, although he could be shopped this offseason in an attempt to fill multiple holes.
Yunel, goes into a slump..funk and is a distraction in the clubhouse and is lazy. Uggla goes into a slump, and busts his rear end and plays the game the right way and apparently is a very good clubhouse guy. I will take Uggla on his worst day over Yunel any day.

closer we get to the d8 more difficult my decision becomes…I may have to sell extra tickets this year to help me pay for the trip (especially since it might end up being 4 games).
I’ve been looking for how homefield in playin game is determined
I think some of you are worrying too soon in regards to losing Bourn and possibly replacing him. I think that if the pitching continues to get better and we can resign Sheets without breaking the bank, then that allows Wren to concentrate of other parts of the team, namely Bourn. I realize that he is gonna command a large contract, but we aren’t gonna have Chipper’s and Lowe’s contracts anymore and has to help some. The team was prepared to sign Greinke for more tham $20mil on a long term deal. That tells me they have the money. It’s just a matter of putting it where it’ll do the most good. Bourn ain’t gonna be gone until he’s gone.
If you look at the Pirates farm system they are loaded with young stud arms and the guy Martel
they brought up is going to be a star. They might fall back some this year but they are going to be extremely relevant next year and beyond
key – I can’t imagine any team in the wildcard race has time to setup their starters. If homefield is decided by best record at most you get one game to rest players. So both teams probably equally screwed
Sorry Jerry, I think Bourn is gone. I can’t see them paying a leadoff hitter in a career year 14 million + a year — HooRah
I’m not counting on it happening, but I figure Wren will make him a pretty decent offer. It’s not as if the Braves have someone else to step into that role.
WW-’Must’ve seen something right away they didn’t like, rather than a lefty righty move. The guy hit the ball hard.”
I wouldn’t read too much into that, a good hitter hit a groundball where no one happened to be playing. The fact that it was a groundball is comforting when it comews to JV. I think the move was more predicated on the moves that the Philly coach was making and FG didn’t want to look like he was sitting there like a bump on a log.
My thoughts too Tiger. Sheets on two days rest is better than Hanson. Get 4 innings out of Sheets and go from there. I don’t like this setup as it’s not fair to anyone.
4 Divisions is coming as soon as we get 32 teams. Expansion? How horrible will that pair of teams be for a couple of years.
as far as the diesel cessna we will see…the biggest problem you run into with adding a 3rd fuel type is distribution. Can you imagine airports having to stock 100LL/JetA/diesel/new avgas.
The infrastructure investment involved would be so cost prohibitive. Noboby wants to hear my solution but it makes the most sense. 80% of the GA fleet could fly on autogas without ethanol. Take the other 20% and push them to turbine and switch from 100LL to autogas.
But I guess inventing an unleaded fuel that meets all the specs and coming up with plants/distribution is a better idea.
kl – lets see how our new starter (medlen or whoever) does down the stretch. Medlen comes in and performs like he did as a starter (minus his first 2-3 nervous games) and he might be the answer.
not sure how bad the expansion teams would be it will depend on how they allow the expansion draft to work and how much the teams want to spend.
Going to autogas from 100LL would involve major engine work. New pistons to lower compression, thus less performance. It’s one thing to run autogas in a trainer but it won’t work in a High Perf Twin or Single for that matter.
Tiger – the reason I think the expansion teams would be so weak is that we have so many marginal bench players, bullpen mop up men. Probably on average the 22 — 25 members of teams are AAAA players anyway.
Think of it this way. You’d have to call up 50 players from the minors and call them MLB players.
Sneaky Pete – I agree Hairston would be a nice addition. I’ll come later, watching Olympics, and switching to MLB Net Work. I’ll be up at least until 3:00am Montana time……Peace my friends, and “Go!!!!!Braves!!!!!”
Just eventually they will add two teams so the leagues will be equal. Then they’ll add 8 division winners and 8 wild cards to get 50% of the teams into the playoffs, etc. etc, etc.
@Jerry….Hi, doing ok guy? Above you said it looks like they got the $ re:long term possible contract offer in excess of 20 million………….Let me ask you this: Could it be they are borrowing that kind of loot from a financial organization for that potential fiduciary matter?
kl – autogas will work for 80% of the existing fleet with no modification…no doubt it involves a ton of work for the 20% that you mentioned.
I don’t believe you can create a fuel, build the refineries and create distribution system for less money than replacing 46K aircraft. Not to mention the fact that the new fuel is expected to cost 30% more than current (as opposed to 50% less for autogas no increase for jetA).
kl – like I said it depends on how they set it up…you force the existing teams to give up existing players. Isn’t that how they did it before? Tier existing ML players and every team is required to leave 1-2 depending on the tiers unprotected.
It will reduce overall quality of the players in the league but doesn’t handicap the expansion teams.
Tiger – Surprisingly, most HP Turbo engines don’t really need the 100LL because turbo pistons are not real high compression. It would overload the turbo with the recycled exhaust if the compression was up at the level of say a Beechcraft Bonanza or Barron. So HP Turbo engines will require less retrofitting than their non turbo siblings.
kl – not arguing that its actually why the 20% is so low. The problem is the aircraft that require it are the ones owned by the people who donate most to the PAC’s so the smart answer is irrelevant.
Tiger – the way the expansion drafts have worked in the past is that you can protect a certain number of men on your 40 man roster, just say 30 for a number. The new team picks maybe a pair of players from the 300 exposed players (30 teams). Then they allowed to protect maybe 3 more players and the expansion teams can choose 1 from the remaining players and so on. There are limits to how many players a team can lose.
Those are very vague and I’m sure they will be amendments to it but you can lose an important player. You can’t just protect the 25 on the MLB team or you lose Teheran, Betancourt, etc. It’s truly crunch time in the front office with salaries, age, past all carrying weight.
The way Minor has been pitching has to lessen the chance of getting a starter. We don’t know though. Wren could be working on something that would shock even Chipper. Next two days should be exciting for the game.

It’s what happens when the Braves are on a winning streak. No one comes on here to bad-mouth the Braves. We have to dream stuff up…

I would think that if there were another decent city to support a ML baseball team, the Marlins, Rays or Pirates would have already moved there.

kl – not arguing that its actually why the 20% is so low.
