Simmons progressing well in recovery from broken hand

Shortstop Andrelton Simmons is progressing well in his recovery from the broken bone in his right hand and is expected to be out of his cast in one more week.

Simmons was examined Friday by specialist Dr. Gary Lourie and told he should be out of his cast next week, at the four-week mark they projected.

“I was hoping for no cast at all,” said Simmons, who was X-rayed and fitted for a lighter, more comfortable cast on Friday. “But the doctor said we need one more week to make sure it gets calcified and stuff.”

Simmons would begin rehabilitation exercises shortly thereafter. He said he’d like to be back after about a week back doing baseball activity, including minor league rehabilitation games, though that’s probably pushing it from the Braves’ point of view.

Simmons has been antsy since shortly after he broke his fifth metacarpal, the knuckle of his pinkie finger, Sunday, July 8 in Philadelphia. He’s been staying in shape by running, and he’s even taken some one-handed swings.

“I think they don’t want me to do it,” Simmons said, with a smile. “I’m telling you, I did my best to not do too much. I’m getting to my limit where I’m about to take (the cast) off myself …It’s annoying. But it’s good now.”

We definitely need Simmons back. Some of the swing Paul Yanish takes should be a crime against humanity.

One article stated that it was the fifth metacarpal, which is not the pinky finger, but the bone between the pinky knuckle and the wrist. So that bone is actually in the hand, if that’s the one Simmons’ broke. It’s sometimes called boxer’s fracture, according to my surgeon, but you can get it by punching the wall if you hit a stud.:)

God I love Simmons! Kid is a straight up gamer! That’s why this team is so easy to love, the Braves pick up high character (and obviously talented) players.

I don’t think I could be more satisfied with what Janish has done, though. Makes every play at short and has given us some decent at bats. Can’t ask for much more really.

Broke it twice. Getting the cast off doesn’t mean it’s all ready for action. People and injuries differ but I didn’t have full use for another month. This is a young man who will try to go no matter what. Protect his future and make certain he is ready.

Tell Simmons to stop sliding into bases head first..I have seen him slide into first base a couple of times..That would be a no-no if I were the manager..

Guys, sliding into first base is a part of baseball. I am so tired of hearing that argument. Freeman broke is thumb by sliding in feet first…a ball hit his hand…So should they stop sliding feet first?! No sliding allowed! No, it is part of the game. There is a different between sliding head first right and sliding head first wrong. Jumping half a foot from the base, as Simmons did, is a no no. The kid was going full speed and by the time he dove, he was already on the base. Heyward slid head first tonight…and he did it correct. You slide and try to go over the bag.

Accidents happen folks. Stop with the “no sliding head first”.

Janish has filled in great on defense. It shows you the value of a top-flight SS who can also hit. That would be Simmons. You could tell in spring games that he has a good swing. He should add power as he fills out. Good thing they didn’t trade him for a pitcher to make 10 starts down the stretch last season to maybe get us into the playoffs. I am sure some team made an offer.
