Don’t know everyones definition of a number #1,but Sheets has been doing the job for me right now!
Medlen: “I know they’re looking for a veteran dude or whatever.”
Meds is a cool cat.
Victorino wants out of Philly apparantly.
July 28th, 20127:25 pm
Wren has already made three deals this week..all for minor league players..two players that were released from other teams.
Yeah he’s cool, DOB. He’s also honest.
July 28th, 20127:26 pm
Good eye, FF!!
July 28th, 20127:27 pm
Send Greinke, to the minors. Hope nobody wants him now.
So flippin’ close…
25 pitches for Blanton in the first and just missed a three run homer by Mac – drive the count up – get him out of there early and let the Braves tear up the bullpen
July 28th, 20127:28 pm
Deadline Deals posts above are spot on. Bourn should have been dealt weeks ago at peak value. No way we can afford him, nor should we meet his asking price.
July 28th, 20127:29 pm
McCann already is the first player to ever hit homers in 6 consecutive games against the Phillies, according to Elias
Meds is one of those guys that create an atmosphere of positive thought–cool guy.
July 28th, 20127:30 pm
Oh well, for all the discusson and angst about the Braves being able to make or not make a signifigant trade, bottom like is that the boys are playing pretty good baseball as of late.
And when push comes to shove, that is what counts. Enjoy the good run for now.
Tumblewood I agree with you on Lester plus he is a southpaw. Braves need another southpaw.
July 28th, 20127:31 pm
David O’Brien…. Do you play fantasy baseball. If so, what is your line?
July 28th, 20127:33 pm
For those who say Bourn should hae been dealt — what do you think you are getting for him????
A Tex to the Angels deal Part II??????
If Micheal walks, we take the picks and hope to make the most out of them. Nothing guaranteed anyway, but I’ll take the picks over another Kotchman/Marek thrift store junk package.
For now, enjoy Bourn while we have him (Personally I think he is having a career yr). He is good, but this is a real good yr for Mikey. Might be the best yr he will ever have.
The Dude Abides... Still
The worse thing that is happening as we sit here tonight. False hope from Mike Minor and Ben Sheets. Just kidding I hope this the real deal.
July 28th, 20127:34 pm
Good 2nd inning, Mike! Nice catch, Martin!
Minor looking VERY sharp so far. 18 pitches – think he’s figuring out this pitching thing – hard to type this with crossed fingers, but…one can hope.
July 28th, 20127:35 pm
How about that exciting trade made with the Pirates today????? LOL.
@VeniceJim….Re: 7:22/ thank you, I understand.
July 28th, 20127:36 pm
I do think there are real strong signs that Minor is figuring this out and is developing into the real deal.
Have to like how he bounced back from a very very adverse string of starts.
I was afraid we were seeing signs of Jo Jo though that was not fair and glad I will stand up and glad to be wrong on that one.
July 28th, 20127:37 pm
Announcers saying that Uggla can’t wait for August to get here because he tears up August. Newsflash: Uggla ain’t doing shyt in August. He is too far gone to get outta the funk he is in.
Its like Dan Uggla is doing everything possible to get his at bat over as soon as he can.
July 28th, 20127:38 pm
Struggla needs to sit for a while! MERCY
July 28th, 20127:39 pm
Uggla ain’t doing shyt in August. He is too far gone to get outta the funk he is in.
You mean like last year?
July 28th, 20127:40 pm
As for Ben Sheets, love the early returns but lets see how he is doing after 6, 8 starts.
He is bound to have an adverse start somewhere down the line so lets see how he bounces back from one of those.
That is the kind of move that Mr. Wren has to make and once in a while if he finds a diamond in the rough than that is brilliant General Managing.
If he can find that diamond in the rough every couple of yrs that is real outstanding. If once a yr that is HOF executivitivity.
July 28th, 20127:41 pm
I’d go along with Lester as long as we don’t give up one of our top prospects, or Delgado.
“I’m a Genuine Example___of a Social Disease!”
How about you ACE?
July 28th, 20127:42 pm
We have to ride it out with the frustrating to watch Dan Uggla regardless of what.
Its the best that we have. And Fredi is right to keep playing him.
Just say NO TO DUMPSTER and his 8 starts…
Could Dempster still land with Braves? Some still think he will
By Danny Knobler | Baseball Insider
July 28, 2012 6:50 pm ET
The Braves didn’t get Ryan Dempster, so they turned to Zack Greinke.
They didn’t get Zack Greinke, so now they’ll turn . . . back to Ryan Dempster?
The longer the Cubs go without agreeing to trade Dempster to the Dodgers, and the longer the Braves go without acquiring another starting pitcher, the more people in baseball start thinking that Dempster could end up with the Braves, after all.
Dempster never directly said that he wouldn’t go to the Braves, but he also never approved the deal that the two teams reached last week. While that trade isn’t still on the table, it still seems clear that the Braves are willing to offer more for Dempster than the Dodgers are.
Because he has more than 10 years and the big leagues and more than five with his current team, Dempster owns the right to approve or reject any trade.
Dempster’s indecision last week caught the Braves by surprise, because they had been led to believe that they were one of two teams he would agree to go to (with the Dodgers being the other one).
The Braves still hope to add a pitcher, but they’ve suggested to other teams that they didn’t have a hot second option behind Greinke, who the Brewers traded to the Angels on Friday night.
When the original Dempster deal fell through, Braves general manager Frank Wren told reporters that he was moving on. But the Braves have continued to monitor the situation, as the Cubs and Dodgers reached an impasse over what prospect or prospects would go to Chicago in a deal.
The Braves have already added a pitcher this month, and they like to remind you that Ben Sheets has won each of his first three starts, with a 0.50 ERA. While the Braves lost out to the Angels on Greinke, they beat out the Cardinals, Yankees and Phillies to sign Sheets.
Still, it’s obvious that the Braves would like to add one more pitcher. Manager Fredi Gonzalez announced Saturday that he was putting Jair Jurrjens in the bullpen, with Kris Medlen replacing him in the rotation, for now.
July 28th, 20127:43 pm
Right now, we have Hudson, Sheets, and Minor doing well. Hanson isn’t doing great, but he is winning his games, so the offense is picking him up. Medlen moving to the rotation makes us complete. Get some bench players and who knows.
July 28th, 20127:45 pm
Don’t care what anyone says. Jon Lester is still a top of the rotation type arm and I’d love to have him in an Atlanta Brave uniform. But the Red Sox believe that his ceiling is still that too, so they won’t trade him. Beckett will be traded this offseason though, but I don’t think the Braves would bring his personality into this clubhouse.
Holy Joe! That guy is a Bland hitter
Lester has been a mess this season though the change of scenery could do him good.
Still wary of giving up too much. And the way Minor is going, no way we move Minor for either Lester or Dempster, and the Dempster stuff still has not gone away.
Maybe we can buy lower on Dempster. Who knows. Wren is keeping it close to the vest and not devulging much and that is what he should do.
July 28th, 20127:46 pm
nice strikeout by Minor
Chip said Blanton’s from Nashville TN, but didn’t note that Minor is from Chapel Hill TN, only about 50 miles apart. That probably doesn’t happen too often. I know Minor went to Vanderbilt but not sure where Blanton went to college, if he did.
July 28th, 20127:47 pm
The Braves could not afford to have Beckett’s salary or inconsistency.
He has never had 2 good yrs in a row.
Lester could stay put. He could get it back together again.
Tuff – Blanton went to UKentucky
Another good scoreless inning for Mike!
It would be incredibly stupid to trade for Dempster ad use Delgado to get him. They have zero leverage. Wren better not trade Randall for him.
July 28th, 20127:49 pm
Chip needs to just shut up. Touting Rollins as one of the greatest Phillies in history and possibly on his way to the HOF? what a laugher.
There is an old saying “Grasping at Straws”
Meaning – Uggla aint gonna ever hit enough to warrant his 111 average the last 7 weeks or 214 for the year and Jon Lester aint gonna get it done either. He is awful now and not worth JJ – Well that may be close.
love Michael Bourn. Can I say again, resign Bourn??
July 28th, 20127:50 pm
Nice start to the inning by Michael! Great to see Brandon – can’t wait to see him pitching again next season!
He’s probably with a cat named Hercules…
McFann :Ô: :Ô: :ô:
Capt.Mudd Do you know what the reason was for Nolieee’s absence [from blog] this past week?
Don’t know if you saw V. Jim’s post, but he was at a friend’s funeral…
July 28th, 20127:51 pm
Alright ***PACE**** 2 SEC schools. Couldn’t be any better, unless it was football of course!
July 28th, 20127:52 pm
Too bad Marteeen – but Bourn is at 2nd.
Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky doesn’t really highlight SEC football
July 28th, 20127:53 pm
Jeffrey D – it does when UGA sees them on the schedule
And great play there – we’ll take it !!!
Good job, Jason!
So true. And with the way our starters are coming around, I wouldn’t give them anyone in the top 10 either.
Yeah! Brandon bringing some good fortune with him while being interviewed! (Although Martin got some bad there on his AB)
July 28th, 20127:54 pm
Gooder job, Jason!
The A Bomb
Gonzalez with some managing today. Kudos!
If im Wren and Cubs approach me with a trade for Dempster then I would demand for Dempster AND Reed Johnson for Delgado. Not Delgado straight up for Dempster anymore.
July 28th, 20127:55 pm
We’re aggressive today. I like it.
Also, I met Brandon Beachy at the Braves’ Caravan earlier this year. He and Diaz were probably the coolest to talk to (granted, they were players and the others were coaches/execs). Speedy recovery, #37.
July 28th, 20127:56 pm
Heyward 15 for 20 in stolen bases. 75% – solid.
Vandy and UK, both on the rise, just wait, and at least they do get the “quality” athletes with some character and smarts, and not many troublemakers like we all know who.
July 28th, 20127:58 pm
As happy as I am for Sheets the way he has come back, I am sad that he will probably sign for a big contract next year like Jaret Wright. When Ben was with the Brewers, I always had this wish one day he would pitch for the Braves. Never thought it would happen though. I would like to think that the Braves would believe in him enough at the end of the season to at least try to resign him. Maybe he would give us a small discount.
July 28th, 20127:59 pm
Medlen deserves to get a chance to start and for me, I am taking the wait and see approach to see how good he will be.
Things could work out that in the end we will be glad we could not make a trade.
On field performance wins games, if pennants were won by the Hot Stove League, the Marlins would be 15 in front. LOL they did not give it the whole yr to break that up. Too bad for Marlin fans but you have to have commitment for more than one yr to build your fan base. They did not even give that plan the whole yr.
But I do not feel sorry for the division rival — still do not like em for the 97 NLCS.
Good play there by Chipper.
Victorino could be playing in his last game as a Phillie. Wouldn’t surprise me at all, especially if we win tonight. He makes a lot of sense for the Reds.
Nicely done, Chipper!
July 28th, 20128:00 pm
So glad we didn’t go after Greinke. Overrated. Yes, he won the Cy Young, but he also has a 4.09 ERA away from Milwaukee this year and is well known to STINK in pressure situations. No thanks. Especially not for good prospects
.. and this is coming from a guy(me) that has been annoyed since the beginning of last year at the potential bats we missed out on because we were unwilling to trade our pitching prospects.
I am stoked to see Medlen get a chance. Maybe the idiots in the Braves front office and dugout are starting to realize that someone who has PROVEN himself is worth two people that haven’t. Medlen should have been in the rotation out of the gate and the job was handed to Delgado who had a horrible spring. Delgado didn’t even WIN the job. How pathetic is that.
If Medlen had been starting since game 1, we might actually be leading the division right now.
Not to tread on dangerous ground, but the Brewers had 1st and 2nd, 1 out, and have the #2 batter give away the 2nd out, and Braun grounds out to end a scoreless inning…
That play by Chipper and the bare handed pickup, he does as well as anyone in the game.
July 28th, 20128:01 pm
Efrim, don’t know if you read what the Phillies GM said. He was saying this series against ATL is important whether they sell or not, that they need to win this series.
July 28th, 20128:02 pm
I’d like to compliment Minor, but I’m truly afraid to do it…
1-2 pitch for a homer. Minor seems to love to do that
Chirp solo hr. Chirp? Why jinx us?
Missed a little with that pitch – not quite as far outside as Mac was set up – now forget it – get Howard. Still got the lead
Sheets might give us a small discount if we do not insult him. But Sheets owes it to himself and his family to take care of number one.
And it will not be long we are looking at Mc Cann (after next yr) and the yr after that its Prado. They both deserve to get paid.
Next yr the same discussion with Mc Cann will be the same as we are talking about Bourn.
July 28th, 20128:03 pm
You see that? F ck!!!
Just by having the intention…
Saw a guy on highlights last night 5 yrs. older than CJ making some great defensive plays at short and hitting a triple for Toronto (I think). 45 yr. old Mr. Vizcaino(sic?) and he’s still got it. Probably his last year too.
July 28th, 20128:04 pm
Steve, I’m with you on Greinke. Looking at him now I’m glad they didn’t trade 3 or more good young guys for him. That’s rediculous to do that for a rental, and like you say, he is a bit overrated anyways.
July 28th, 20128:05 pm
TuffShhhtuff – Omar Vizquel, you mean?
@McFann…..yes I got it from VJ…..and thank you for the follow-up….you deserve an ICEE.
Tuff, you mean Omar Vizquel.
July 28th, 20128:07 pm
oh goody, i got here just in time to watch minor screw up…
Good job Minor – didn’t give in, got a call for strike 3, but…way to stay tough.
Do a U-turn there, Wiggington!
Nats HR by who else? – Corey Brown, as you undoubtedly guessed…1-0…
Yeh, that’s it ***LAG***. Well, I was close anyway. Is there even a Vizcaino or did I make that up?
Safe to say Greinke has the Smoltz stuff, but not the Smoltz stuff upstairs if you know what I’m sayin’. Got to have that mental tough stuff.
Don’t just stand there and Winkington at that 3rd strike son
July 28th, 20128:08 pm
Exactly like last year Jeffrey d. Just because he had a great month last year in August doesn’t mean that the same will happen this year. You can see how bad he has been this year. It’s not like he is hitting the ball hard but right at someone. He is just lost…period.
And a 2 run Tyler Moore HR gives the Nats a 3-0 lead…
you mean the smoltz stuff upstairs b4 or after john saw a shrink?
July 28th, 20128:09 pm
NBC is so STUPID TO save stuff for primetime when you already know the RESULT…
HOWEVER, I’ll have to watch Misty May and Kerri Walsh anyway
Wren said he won’t give three players for a rental (Zack) only if he would sign long term..Simple enough he wouldn’t sign long term. Wren probably didn’t get the chance to find out.
Sort of understandable when he has a ERA of 5.37 this season and around 5 for his career. Gonna need to see it for, oh I don’t know, the rest of the year from Minor? Even then, still a #3 starter ceiling.
Does anyone remember when HO HO Reyes was struggling and Smoltz and Glavine took him under their wings to try and pass along a little knowledge on how to pitch. It lasted about a month before HO HO put an end to it saying they were giving him too much to think about.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
