I’ll accept the designation as the fan who brings up the dastardly Teixeira trade at every opportunity. When I first did so, which was prior to the trade, all I got was unpleasant retorts that all these guys were were prospects. And, of course. “Big Tex” would take the Braves to the promised land, take a “hometown discount”, and continue to lead the Braves to that promised land year after year.
Well, I was right and the others, including most if not all of the AJC sportswriters, were wrong.
I am pleased to see so many fans now realize what a true disaster that trade proved to be. Much of the lack of success of the Braves has resulted from that blunder. Even Wren seems determined to avoid a repeat performance. It is about time.
I think with a fair bit of negotiating skills on Frank Wren’s side, he could convince Jack Zurinzik to give us Felix Hernandez for a package of Teheran, Delgado, J.R. Graham, and Zeke Spruill/Tyler Pastornicky/ Sean Gilmartin
Attaboy O’Brien, love the way you reminded these short sighted bloggers as to the disaster that was the Teixeira trade.
Greinke wasn’t worth the risk at all. As for the Braves going all in on Ryan Dempster, I can’t blame them as Chipper deserves another shot at the post season. That said, no matter what Wren and company do I seriously doubt that the Nationals can be caught from behind.
We are a wild card hopeful baseball team, nothing more. One more than capable of winning 85 plus games but also capable of missing the playoffs by an eye lash. So nothing has changed, we are a coin flip for the playoffs and have been since before spring training.
Drew wants to trade Delgado, Teheran, Graham, and Gilmartin for Hernandez. That would be Teixeira revisited. Unfortunately, history does repeat itself and, sadly, some never learn.
I say, go after Ed Volquez. He shouldn’t require destroying the future and has pitched extremely well of late- much of which has been since the all-star game.
Yes, giving up multiple top prospects for a rental player is to much, but was their any indication that the Braves could have signed Greinke to a long term extension? They will be having a lot of money coming off the books at the end of the season, but I have always had reservations about paying a starting pitcher 20+ million a year to play every 5 days.
It would have been nice to have a pitcher of Greinke’s caliber, but in all honesty, what would he really do for this team between now and the end of the season? The Braves have a shot at the playoffs, but I won’t count them in until they are in, I learned my lesson last year and will never assume this team is headed for the playoffs until they are mathematically in the playoffs.
I hope they get 1 front end starting pitcher, but don’t overpay for one. If we could get Jurrgens out of the rotation and replace him with a front line starter, then that will improve this team a great deal. I never thought it was going to work out well, but Ben Sheets has been a huge spark to this team. It is clear that he still has very good stuff left, and at this point in time I hope the Braves lock him up for at least next season if not beyond. I don’t care what any of the homers on this site say, Mike Minor is hit or miss and is nothing close to being a consistent pitcher. This staff still needs a lot of help as evident of being one of the worse staffs in the NL, but adding another pitcher at a reasonable price and getting Jurrgens out of the rotation will go a long way in improving it. In about 3 days we will have our answers.
The Braves have 4 prospects other teams would want in a big trade — Teheran, Delgado, Bethancourt, and maybe Gattis. (I’m excluding Viz because of the injury) The farm system has produced Heyward, Freeman, Kimbrel, Beachy, Minor and Simmons over the past 3 years, but there is not a lot of talent after the top 5 down there anymore, and each of them have struggled, regressed, or had injuries this year. It is not only a question of being able to afford a top tier talent, but also the ability to outbid another buyer without completely decimating the system.
does anyone know when foxsports south is going to replay the john smoltz retirement special? it was supposed to come on the day of the the rain delay a couple of weeks ago and my dvr missed it. thanks
It does amuse me though that the Braves set the trading bar high. Fitting really as it seems every other team set the free agent contract bar exceedingly high.
I have made this argument time and time again. It makes more sense to put together a winning team coming out of spring training than the standard, “saving some resources for the trade deadline for acquisitions.”
Screw saving 5-6 mil to pick someone up at the deadline! You overpay at the deadline and more times than not, you are outbid like the Braves have been time and time again for a piece everyone wants.
But as usual, next year the Braves will probably leave ST saying they are happy with their team and have some brownies the the cookie drawer to eat at the deadline.
Geez guys go ALL IN out of spring training and either build a lead or do what you are having to do anyway…… go with plan B because everyone is outbidding you for help today.
If they are going Medlen in the rotation and can’t come to terms on an agreement for James Shields, then I sure hope Wren goes out and gets a reliever – a dominant one.
Many players after signing a big contract don’t perform up-to-their-past due likely to the pressure to show they were worth it. Zack Greinke with his mental history will be a big gamble for the Angels or whoever signs him longterm.
Wren isn’t an idiot, but he has made repeated blunders this season which have hurt. Although Ben Sheets has been an incredible find for which Frank Wren can be proud.
That said, pitching is the one thing Wren has gotten right most of the time, it’s just that his lack of commitment to other aspects of the game, are in need of reassessment.
Drew wants to trade Delgado, Teheran, Graham, and Gilmartin for Hernandez. That would be Teixeira revisited. Unfortunately, history does repeat itself and, sadly, some never learn.
I’d do that….Felix has 2-3 years left on his contract and the Braves have TONS of arms in the system. Look at Miss. and Lynchburg’s starting rotation
the M’s would want Salcedo/ Pastornicky instead of Gilmartin…Gilmartin is Hultzen to them
Looks like DOB has copied and pasted all of my posts here on this blog. I believe I deserve some sort of compensation for helping him write this article.
Gant is already pumping up the Medlen to rotation train. He says Medlen is the best option because the SP market is shrinking.
It is obvious he and the other guys are told to pump Medlen up to brainwash the fans in a way. Problem is they don’t give fans enough credit. We know what’s going on and we aren’t all little children. Kind of insulting.
I wonder if FW has at least called Seattle about King Felix? You know he is discussing a couple of guys that aren’t being mentioned…doubt that Felix is one of them, but I hope he is still working the phones HARD.
Here’s something to watch if Wren doesn’t get a good starter and that’s what Chipper will have to say. Never a time I can remember him being so vocal about something as he has been most of this season so far about that rotation. Bunch of times already he’s called some of those guys out and now he’s all about getting one through a trade. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he calls out Wren.
Why do we want Shield when he has been no better than Delgado lately (actually worse) and cost much more. A big name player is not necessarily going to add anything more to the rotation than what is available in the system. Medlen would probably give as much or more value than somebody struggling on another team and cost a lot less in dollars and talent. Garza, Shields, Lester have all struggled and would help us about as much as Len Barker did years ago.
Wade Davis is interesting. Although that seems like we’re just stockpiling arms – which isn’t too bad – but this team needs an arm that can lead this rotation. Hudson, Hanson, Minor, Delgado, Teheran, Medlen are the options right now for the 2013 season. Just can’t buy into Sheets after 3 starts and his injury history. Great story, though.
if the braves move Medlen to starting rotation they gonna need a reliever ,,,trade Jurrjens and Flande to SD for Gregerson and Kotsay,,,maybe in PETCO Park Jurrjens will pitch better ….
trade for Scott Hairston ,,,send to the Mets Gearrin
so we move Medlen to the rotation, acquire RH reliever and 2 bench bats LH and RH…Hairston plays LF CF RF and 2B and Kotsay OF and 1B….
sounds good i guess and cheap….
for make a spot in active roster send Pastornicky and Constanza to AAA
They need to stop with those dumb ass tweets from blinded fans. Just about every one they pick to read is corny and I would bet at least 95% of the fans don’t casually say those things to a friend when they watch the Braves.
Again, I almost feel insulted the way our commentators feed this garbage at us fans.
Wade Davis would be interesting in that he’s been a starter, and now does much the same job as Medlen. What isn’t interesting is the guaranteed 22.6 million owed to him through 2016, along with another 10 million team option in 2017 with a 2.5 million buyout.
Wow. Our starters may be bottom 3 in the league, but one pitcher does not completely change that. And what happens when we send Teheran and Delgado somewhere for a guy who won’t be with us after this season? I’ll tell you what: Hudson gets old really fast, JJ is terrible, Sheets is gone/ineffective, Minor may be ok, Hanson is still his inconsistent self. Point is, if you think our SP is bad now, wait until next season. Especially when we’ve traded away those pitchers who may be ready to enter the rotation.
Personally, this team is not a serious contender this season. They are too inconsistent both in the rotation AND the lineup. One pitcher (especially one w/out much postseason exp – Dempster and Greinke) will not solve that. Maybe 2 or 3 would, in addition to Medlen; but that’s not going to happen. So, stock up on young talent; be as competitive as you can this year WITHOUT the big deadline deal and hopefully in the next 2 years our rotation will be better.
It is to bad because of FRANK and FREDI CHIPPER will have to play on a loseing team his final season. I know they will win more then they will lose , but no playoffs/
Actually, I trade Bourn before the deadline. It will be viewed as waving the white flag and so be it. This team is simply not good enough. Come next year we will need either a 3B and a CF or a LF and CF. Either way, that is a lot of holes to plug. Get some talent in return for a guy having a career season.
You could pull some nice talent in return from a team that would love to have a great leadoff and maybe even have a chance or re-signing him. Fill the holes now and for the future.
I think a guy worth taking a look at is Kevin Millwood. He’s having a good season with Seattle and actually has better numbers away from spacious Safeco Field. Adds a veteran presence to the rotation that can take you deep into games.
wow: exactly. The Braves will not be a serious contender next year, they will be worse. Quite worse. And the Nationals WILL NOT BE. So by going after a Greinke you are saying we are just one starter away from contending this year; and basically putting all of your eggs into this season’s basket.
braves get brian friday , shortstop from pittsburg, chicago sends marrero , first baseman to pitt, braves send cash or player to remember to pitt, why ? we dont need a triple a shortstop unless something else is going down
@McFann….Just curious–Do you know what the reason was for Nolieee’s absence [from blog] this past week? I didn’t go back and read anything about it–sorry!
I’d like to be Jeff Schultz’s bookie–or the same for all of you who are whining that the Braves are too cheap to pony up for a frontline SP. Wren MADE the deal for Dempster, but he would be stupid to overpay for any SP being shopped right now (King Felix is the exception, but like most aces in the league he isn’t on the market). You don’t have to dwell on Teix: how many of you feel great about Wainright+Jason Marquis-for-JDDrew trade now? Don’t you people realize that we wouldn’t NEED to trade for a #1 starter if we still had Wainwright or Feliz or Harrison. How many years before we say, “We wouldn’t NEED a pitcher if we still had Delgado or Teheran or Medlin or Venters!”

Bama Brave – when has Wren not made a trade in July that improved the team?

Hanley is loving LA so far. That’s going to turn out to be a great move for the Dodgers.

I want Medlen in the rotation…just so he can lit up. Maybe then, people will shut up about him.
Wow
So you’d rather say “I told you so!” than have Medlen pitching as a reliable starter and help the Braves?

“Personally, this team is not a serious contender this season”
With how mediocre the NL has been this season, if the Braves can’t be a serious contender this season, they won’t be one next season.

Yes, let’s wave the white flag when we hold a WC spot and are only 4 games back of the best team in the NL.

wow: exactly. The Braves will not be a serious contender next year, they will be worse. Quite worse. And the Nationals WILL NOT BE. So by going after a Greinke you are saying we are just one starter away from contending this year; and basically putting all of your eggs into this season’s basket.
