raleigh, you know facts just get in the way on here. So many know every phone call Wren makes or doesn’t make. What negotiations and offers he makes and doesn’t make.
He wouldn’t start Monday- he could start Tuesday. And even if he eventually does get moved into the rotation, he’s not going to go more than probably 4 innings in his first outing anyways…
“Ted took 15 years of ownership to spend any serious money and Liberty Media hasn’t had that much time yet?”
Didn’t Ted kick off this whole free agency thing with that Andy Messerschmidt deal? Didn’t Ted spend a sh**load of money away until he dummied up and signed Scheurholz and Cox?
PHILLY PHAN, you obviously don’t know the manager, Fredi G very well. He will use Bautista like he did Livan Hernandez. “Run him out there” when the game is tied, and there’s runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the 6th inning. I think FG missed LH, so that’s why he put in for Bautista. If they were going to do this, why didn’t they just keep Livan anyway?
And even if he eventually does get moved into the rotation, he’s not going to go more than probably 4 innings in his first outing anyways…
It’s seeming more possible for Wren to do this, no matter how much we scream that he’s more valuable in the pen. If we don’t get Greinke (or any SP) I could see Meds being moved into the rotation and us getting 2 RP.
you know that starters pitch some about half way between starts. once in a while they will even be used in a game for an inning on that day. Same thing applies to Meds.
Miguel Descartes Batista Jerez (born February 19, 1971 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Dominican professional baseball pitcher who currently plays for the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
They’ll stay in the talks for starters till the end. They aren’t going to shut off all of the other teams with an asset they could use just because they aren’t liking the prices right now. There is still 4 days left until the deadline.
When did we become the Sanford and Sons of baseball? Every time some over the hill player is released Wren thinks its some kind of “diamond” in the rough deal. Only he can see the true value and it doesn’t cost us a thing! Except a chance at the playoffs.
This home stand will decide if we are going to have a chance at post season. We probably should win 7 out of 10 considering the competion but I will be surprised if we can do that well but lets go Braves. And finally lets give Medlen his due and let him start a couple of games and go from there. I’m crossing my fingers for Sheets tonight and hope that he can get his breaking pitch working like old times and if he can it might be lights out for the Phillies.

CHICAGO — The Los Angeles Dodgers are not the only team Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster would accept a trade to, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Dempster will consider a number of teams, including the Atlanta Braves and Dodgers, if the Cubs come to him with a deal in place, the source said.
“He has not said that he wouldn’t go to Atlanta or anywhere else for that matter,” the source said. “He wants to take his time and has earned the right to wait on approving a deal having his 10-5 rights.”
More On The Cubs
Can’t get enough Cubs information? ESPNChicago.com has all the latest from the North Side. Blog
Reports surfaced Monday that the Cubs and Braves agreed to a trade of Dempster for 22-year-old pitcher Randall Delgado, pending the approval of the Cubs pitcher, who has veto power on any trade. Dempster said he wanted to take his time before making a decision on any trade.
But Braves general manager Frank Wren told an Atlanta radio station on Wednesday that they are “moving on” from a Dempster deal, and he said Dempster wants to land with the Dodgers and his good friend and former Cubs teammate Ted Lilly.
“In his case, from my understanding, and I’m only getting it secondhand from the Cubs, they had a meeting with him a couple of weeks ago and laid it out and that the primary two suitors were us and the Dodgers,” Wren said on 680-AM The Fan. “He had positive things to say about both, but he had a slight preference to the Dodgers because of Ted Lilly. He and Ted Lilly are best of friends, and he’d like to go play with his friend. I think there were also some personal issues that suited better for him.”
A trade with the Braves still could resurface if Dempster chooses to waive his veto rights and accept a deal; however, Atlanta took its deal off the table on Tuesday.
The Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Dodgers and Braves were on Dempster’s original list for consideration, according to another source. The Washington Nationals have also shown some interest but have not made an offer for Dempster. Washington will sit down young ace Stephen Strasburg at some point around his160-inning mark and will need a veteran starter to plug in for him.
The Dodgers have had an offer on the table since July 19 for Dempster. The Cubs would like the Dodgers’ top prospect, right-handed pitcher Zach Lee, added in the deal, according to sources. That may have caused a stalemate between the two sides. The Cubs continue to seek young pitching and third-base prospects in talks with other teams.
Dempster is owed a pro-rated amount, close to $5 million, of the $14 million he is making in the final year of his contract.
The Braves can go 0-10 in their next ten games and still make the playoffs. I mean, some folks here think the Phillies are ripe for .714 baseball over the next 60+ games so if they can do it, why not us?
Benny (Norcross, GA): Scouting report on JR Graham? Coming out of Livermore HS and Santa Clara university, all I remember hearing about that he has a maximum effort deliver, and profiled more as a Relief pitcher prospect than a Starting pitcher. Has he smoothed out his mechanics?
Jim Shonerd: Scouts who’ve seen him this year thought he was doing it pretty easily, so his delivery’s not that much a concern from an effort standpoint. He’s got a good chance to stick as a starter, as he can pitch in the mid-90s, has a solid slider and has made progress with his changeup.
I agree about the pitch count over number of innings, but unless he has a few 10 pitch or less innings, I can’t see him going past 4 innings, regardless (in other words, I suspect his pitch count would be no more than 60-75 pitches that first time out)
Now that’s really weird. I had to be gone for a few days for a funeral also. Thought all the time NOLIE was probably missing my valuable input. Wouldn’t it be weird if it was the same funeral.
Makes a ton of sense for Oakland. I’m rooting for them. Would be a great story if they won one of the two wild card spots. Yoenis Cespedes is fun to watch with that big arse swing of his and Jarrod Parker is also a shorter starter who can rev it up there in the mid-90’s.

Obviously it wouldn’t just be Julio. Seattle though is stacked with pitchers Danny Hultzen, Taijuan Walker, and James Paxton all probably about a year away.. It’s a shame Atlanta doesn’t have any position player prospects as even if we were to deal with them, and he were avaliable thats probably what they would be looking for.
Phillies GM on this series vs ATL: “We have to play well against these guys. They’re a very tough team. We don’t necessarily have to sweep ‘em. But it’s important for us to win the series”.
They will give us all they got. Braves better not be all relaxed and think they can coast in these three games. Give it to them, just like they gave to to us that last series back in Sept.
Watch Wren pull off a trade with Philly for Joe Blanton and call it a day on the search for a viable SP. just what exactly are the Braves supposed to do with Batista? He doesn’t even belong on a non-contenders roster let alone a team in the hunt. It’s one thing to take a gamble on a reclamation project like Sheets, but Batista offers nothing. The Braves really don’t have any money to spend.
“The Braves really don’t have any more to spend”
Well, Liberty Media DOES have money to spend, they just won’t ALLOW the Braves to spend it on such a frivolous thing as a mere baseball team.
Honestly if we aren’t going to get a 1 or 2 type starter then I’d rather just plug Medlen into the rotation and find a long reliever to take his spot. Grienke, Felix, Johnson and Shields are looking more and more like they aren’t going to happen, so why bother with dealing prospects for a back of the rotation starter – because with the exception of Huddy (who’s a solid #2) we have a rotation full of 3’s and 4’s. What we need is an Ace.
I’m sure this has been asked – but (1) isn’t Medlen a top of the rotation starter (maybe a 2 or 3)? And so (2) wouldn’t it make sense to look for a reliever to fill his role and put him in the rotation? I’ve seen nothing but good from him, very impressed. I’ve been puzzled as to why he’s in the pen.
Ironically enough I’m excited so far by the Braves trade deadline moves. No seriously, keep Delgado and Teheran, get a bullpen guy and a bench bat, and move Medlen to the rotation.
DOB or someone else…can somebody tell me what time the gates open on Saturday and what time Braves BP would be? Thanks in advance…first game at Turner Field. Mostly get to the Braves at Wrigley and Busch.
Only Braves – I wouldn’t go counting any unhatced Mopylans quite yet. Maybe he’s ready and comes back to Moylanesque form, maybe he doesn’t – it;s yet to be determined. In the meantime, Carlyle has pitched well enough to merit a chance. If Peter comes back and can do better, then more power to him, but he isn’t ready and Buddy is.
Not as if we’ve got much going for us with Martinez and Varvaro right now. I just see no good reason NOT to see what Buddy has left in the tank. He’s paid his dues at Gwinnett and has looked good doing it.
did not see that, but I have seen several stories at ESPN and elsewhere that said straight up trade. who knows, but i am not a big Bowman fan. he often makes mistakes IMO
Sorry, JUAN, but everything I just read says Batista is in Gwinnett, AAA. Wikipedia, and two other news sources say that. One even quotes FG as saying he would be assigned to Gwinnett. He’s not showing up on either roster yet, so who really knows?

Kris, check out Rob’s post, Batista is a temporary filler in AAA for that young starter about to be traded. This makes sense.

How the hell did we offer Delgado plus for Dempster.
Oh Wren, I am a fan but this is terrible.

But wait, if they’re trading a player and Batista is the replacement (as some suggest), why’d they release Junge? He’s younger (36).

Ironically enough I’m excited so far by the Braves trade deadline moves.
No seriously, keep Delgado and Teheran, get a bullpen guy and a bench bat, and move Medlen to the rotation.

Sorry, JUAN, but everything I just read says Batista is in Gwinnett, AAA. Wikipedia, and two other news sources say that. One even quotes FG as saying he would be assigned to Gwinnett. He’s not showing up on either roster yet, so who really knows?

#Braves signed Batista to a minor league contract. He’ll be assigned to Gwinnett.

I wonder what this “just in case” means?
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Batista ”is going to add some depth for us, just in case.” Gonzalez says Batista will be assigned to Triple-A Gwinnett.
