The Braves are on a pace to win 89 games. If 90 wins gets a one game playoff they might be in pretty good shape w/o a significant move.
The Nats are on a pace to win 98 games. Maybe they’ll keep that pace, maybe they won’t, but if they do the Braves will have to play .688 the rest of the way. That would be quite an improvement to go from .551 to .688. I don’t think Greinke or any one player is going to make up that kind of a difference.
That doesn’t mean I’m against trading for Greinke. If he’s available to the Braves then go for it, if not try to get him in the off-season.
I think the biggest factors in where Greinke signs in the offseason are the contract offer and in which city he wants to play. I don’t think the team trading for Greinke will get any extra points from Greinke when it comes to where he might sign.
If a team offers him a good contract and he wants to pitch in that city, he’ll go to that team whether he pitched their in 2012 or not, I strongly suspect.
I don’t think the team trading for Greinke will get any extra points from Greinke
I don’t think he’d give a team points simply for trading for him, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that Greinke would evaluate his experience playing in that city as either a plus or a minus when determining his future.
On 90 games, true, its not a requirement but as of this moment the Braves are a borderline playoff team. They need a top flight starter to take some innings off of this pen and away from JJ.
I don’t think the Braves are getting a SP in the off season, even a middle of the pack SP is going to cost in the 7-8 mil range in Free Agency.
Its a safe gamble that Delgado and Minor will be better with a little experience.
They will be fools not to pick up the option on Hudson who is a bargain. Its not the worst thing to keep on with the kids and allow JJ to walk away. JJ is just not that good anymore.
It will be interesting to see what Hanson does next yr. Can he get another mile or two on the fastball gain in the off season??????? That we have to find out.
There is NO WAY the Braves are affording a $20 mil per yr SP, and some guys are getting more than that. Not with a $90 or $95 mil payroll.
The max I see the Braves paying for a player is around $15 mil per.
Going to be interesting to see just how well Sheets does and if he is real real good, what other teams will offer him in this off season. Sheets is still a work in progress but with a great early start.
Rotation for 2013?????
Hudson
Hanson
Delgado
Minor
Teheran/Medlen or….Maybe Sheets (depends on alot of factors) or a veteran they find on the real cheap very late in free agency.
From Jayson Stark: The Braves may not have announced on anybody’s radio show that they’ve moved on with Zack Greinke, the way they did for Ryan Dempster, but they are telling teams that they’re turning their focus away from the rotation and are shopping more for bullpen and bench pieces. That would be an indication they have no interest in dealing Julio Teheran for a rental player.
The Braves have agreed to sign Miguel Batista, David Lennon of Newsday reports (on Twitter). The Mets released the 41-year-old right-hander yesterday after designating him for assignment.
Batista posted a 4.82 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9 in 46 2/3 innings for the Mets this year, including five starts. Batista joined the Mets last summer on a minor league deal and signed another with the club in January. The 18-year veteran has a 4.49 ERA with 5.8 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in his career.
Don’t get it either. Brought this up a few days ago. Unless they are increasing the payroll 10-15 million that we don’t know about. I just don’t see how this works.
Efrim — One thing about this ownership group is that they do not let you know much about what they are about. That might not be such a bad thing, but increasing payroll is not characteristic of this group. Hell, do they even like baseball???????

Of course the Olympics would drop baseball… only played in the Americas, Japan, Australia (now), and beginning to be played in parts of Asia.
Why, baseball just doesn’t have much global reach, like shot-putting.
Baseball is probably going to see a big downswing the rest of our lifetimes. It just isn’t played as much by kids as it used to be. Nothing is being played by kids now like it was in the past.
I don’t claim to be able to predict the future and don’t have any stats but the last game of the Marlins/Braves series was attended by about 20,000 kids from area youth programs. The Marlins were persuaded to close the retractable roof and turn on the AC to keep the kids from getting hot. It’s just not the same and I can’t see any outside sports not declining in this environment kids now are being taught.
The Miguel Bautista signing could be a move to fill a Triple-A roster spot in case of a trade of a prospect. I don’t think there is any way he’s getting a major league deal. This is probably not as big a deal as people may be making it out to be.

You can always use a veteran arm as org depth this time of the yr, but as one poster said, this could be for AAA depth for now.
Batista was not a bad pitcher five, ten yrs ago. Once won 16 games in a season.
And for this winter, do not expect it to be much more exciting than last winter was. As long as Liberty Cheapedia is around, no studs are going to be kept here unless we develop them from the system.
The system is the backbone of the ATL Braves organization as they are constructed now.
And what is our $90 something mil payroll going to be in five yrs????? For sure we will be a bottom third payroll by then, assuming things are the same.
We are fortunate to have good young pitching prospects, and some good young guys like Heyward, Freeman and Simmons who will enter their prime in 2 yrs. Very lucky.
If our system goes on a bad run, we are in real trouble.
Hello everyone! True, and the Braves signed RP Bautista, not too bad of a signing……Also Braves are first up on Jame Shields, and were mentioned first up on Greinke.
Playoff rotation today would have to be Hudson, Hanson, Minor. Sheets and Delgado (is he gonna replace JJ soon) are our 4/5. You have to be okay with that in case we make the playoffs.
Im guessing if Stark is correct, then Medlen will be moved to the rotation and Batista may replace him in the pen? Not sure how we go from adding Dempster, to adding Batista.
Philly Phan: Funny thing is, that proposed rptation of yours for the Braves will get a hell of a lot closer than your rotation with Halladay, Cole and Lee…….go figure
I am not upset that the team is keeping its strong pitching. I’m pissed that this team appears to again be thinking along the lines of Ankiel/Farnsworth for the stretch run.
Im guessing if Stark is correct, then Medlen will be moved to the rotation and Batista may replace him in the pen? Not sure how we go from adding Dempster, to adding Batista.
If they move Medlen into the rotation, they’ll get a bullpen arm like Jonathan Broxton.
I am not upset that the team is keeping its strong pitching. I’m pissed that this team appears to again be thinking along the lines of Ankiel/Farnsworth for the stretch run.
And it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see them go to the Royals for that bullpen arm. Hah! Double Sigh..
I think they’ll stay in on the Greinke talks till the end. But Teheran isn’t going to get traded for him, so he’ll offer Delgado+ and see if that’s enough. It won’t be if Texas stays in it. I suppose we can just hope they go get Josh Johnson or James Shields – however I’m starting to think those two won’t get moved so it’s going to be Angels vs. Rangers for Greinke.
This is totally shaping up to be Farnsworth again! In the absence of getting the impact player they had said they would get, the team reaches out to the Royals for a reliever. Who else is on that Royals team? Is there a weak outfielder available?
“Hanson hasnt pitched more than 5.1IP in any start since the all star break. Not sure how much you can count on the soft tosser come playoff time.”
We do not win in the playoffs anyway, so its no big deal. Winning in the playoffs is something that other teams do, notably Braves opponents who play them in the post season. The record since 2000 speaks for itself.
I can deal with not adding a starter due to the fact that they are overpriced and most are rentals but good gosh Wren, you could probably get a quality bullpen arm somewhere without resorting to picking up another guy that the METS wouldn’t even keep! I guess the only memory Wren has of Batista is the way he used the Braves a few times in his career. Just because a guy can get the Braves out doesn’t mean he can get anyone else out.
EVERYONE LIKES THE BRAVES….AS A SECOND TEAM
BURNETTE LOVE THE BRAVES BUT…YANKEES
DEMPSTER BRAVES IN NO TRADE LIST BUT….DODGERS IS HIS FAVORITE
FURCAL TO THE BRAVES…OH WAIT…NO THE DODGERS
ON AND ON AND ON….
The blog commentors had a hissy fit when Wren thought about trading Delgado. And they’ll have another one if Wren decides not to trade multiple high prospects for a starting pitcher.
Ahh, and in the end, it comes down to the Braves being cheap that is going to cost them the playoffs.
Why am I not surprise.
I’m not sure if McGuirk and Wren have every heard of a little thing called Inflation. But if they want to compete, they are going to have to start signing some REAL high calibur players. No more Uggla’s or Sheets,
They should re-sign Bourn and sign Greinke, that would be a first good step.
But…they won’t sign either and will continue to be mediocre
“The Nats are on a pace to win 98 games. Maybe they’ll keep that pace, maybe they won’t”

I warned Everyone on Here abt the Curley W’s and was Mocked at and Jeered…They remind me of the 1994 Expos, Just a Better overall team with their Natitude.
Traded Derek Lowe
Traded Jairo Asencio for cash
Signed Chad Durbin
Signed Livan Hernandez
JJ Hoover traded for Juan Fransisco
Traded Drew Sutton for cash
Todd Redmond traded for Paul Janish
Signed Miguel Batista
No way Bautista is your bullpen arm. Broxton/Francouer………..May as well Braves like some Georgia boys. Whether Medlen moves to roation or not, I still think the Braves aquire a bullpen arm
This is totally shaping up to be Farnsworth again! In the absence of getting the impact player they had said they would get, the team reaches out to the Royals for a reliever. Who else is on that Royals team? Is there a weak outfielder available?

Im guessing if Stark is correct, then Medlen will be moved to the rotation and Batista may replace him in the pen? Not sure how we go from adding Dempster, to adding Batista.
If they move Medlen into the rotation, they’ll get a bullpen arm like Jonathan Broxton.

*step this up… our rotation is worst of contenders, it will need to improve. Best SP ERA is 3.71 and our next best is 4.39

The Only Braves Fan — It could be worse and if the Braves do get there and get bounced right away, that is better than last yr.
Hey, with out post season record since the turn of the century, its something we should be ussed to by now.
This team has actually done better than I thought anyway, were we not picked to finish 4th by most pundits when this started.
We cannot be too disappointed to date. It has been a decent year, but the Nats are better, that is fair.
We got a break in that the Phillies were disappointing and the Marlins well, the record and their dismantling speaks for itself.
Philly should be better in 13, this was a bad yr. The Fish are the Fish.
