Unless a reporter is saying something is definite, it’s hard to blame them for reporting what they hear from sources within the game. People should be smart enough to not believe things are a definite until they actually happen. I honestly don’t think Rosenthal, Heyman, etc. make up stuff just to stir the pot and make money.
When Canstanza was in left and Pastornicky was playing short the braves were ten games over five hundred and in first place. When Chipper decided he wanted to play again it took the speed out of the lineup.
So Chipper out…. Prado to 3rd and Constanza to LF… and we’ll start winning again!! Gotcha!!
Think about the rejections. The Braves usually don’t spend money in free agency, but I have to wonder if it’s their choice. How many of the starting 8 have come her via free agency? They are all either home grown or come via a trade, pretty much forced to come to ATL.
I know Mc and Uggla both signed extensions, so that’s a positive I guess.
“But my beef is he shouldnt have said he wanted to play for the Braves second after the Dodgers.
Keep in mind that this is all second- or third-hand.”
Actually, according to at least one ATL writer, Dempster told some Braves players when the Cubs were last in town that he would like to play for the Braves. I would say that report would not have been made had the ATL writer not spoken to Braves players who indeed had the conversation with Dempster.
Like many here, I have no problem with Dempster not wanting to come to ATL, but to publicly say you would like to come to ATL then back out, is a waste of EVERYONE’S time and efforts!
Wren should pull the offer and move on. This feels too much like Derek Lowe after the Furcal fiasco. When you deal on the rebound from a feeling of desperation, odds are you will make a bad deal.
I would pull the deal off the table and when the scrubbies come begging to make a trade I would offer them blaine boyer and keith lockhart….. haha move of fw no time to sit around and play tug of war!!!
I am wondering if the issue with Dempster is that he told Cubs management he prefers Dodgers so try to work that deal out first prior to the deadline, still about a week away, and if that doesn’t work out he would accept a trade to Braves. So with the time still remaining until deadline, he felt blindsided by the news that he had been “traded” when Cubs had told him they would try to work a deal with Dodgers. Pure speculation mind you, but makes the most sense and doesn’t make Dempster look like an A-hole.
D.O.B your wrong by saying Ugglas latest slump are tou watching every game because he has been in a slump since day one. Nolan Ryan called out Hamilton wish someone had balls to call out Uggla. Thats not the way Braves do things might hurt his feelings. Watch Marlins hit and run again tonight ask Freddi what the hell is a hit and run he would say runner on first and two outs and 3-2 count we might send runner. FIRE HIS ASS.
I will say it again……Delgado is too much to give up for a 35 year old pitcher. No wonder the Cubbies jumped on the deal. Bad deal unless Dempster is resigned and can pitch well for the next 5 years….both of which I doubt will happen. This time next year, when Delgado is winning in Chicago…and Dempster is pitching in LA……the Braves will regret this move if and when it happens. Anyone remember those young players we sent to Texas? The Braves are still regretting that terrible trade just to win that year. Imagine…..if he still had Salty (having a great year in Boston and would have developed into good trade bait on his own), Harrison (all star pitcher this year), Andrus (all star shortstop for two years), and the other pitcher (injured but outstanding for Texas for 3 years in a row). I think the Cub fans are praying that Dempster approves this trade. Holy Cow.

One source says status of Dempster-to-Braves deal should be resolved “shortly.” In the meantime, Cubs still talking to both Braves & Dodgers
Something’s not right about this Dempster deal. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs leaked the deal in order to get the Dodgers to better their offer. I would rather keep Delgado for 5+ years than get Dempster for a few months and have him sign with a west coast team in 2013. Wake up Braves management.
What you wrote to D.O.B would make sense if and only if it was written in at least one complete sentence. Unfortunately, I could not find a single one in your post. Do you have any idea what a subject and a predicate is?
If Dempster indeed shot the Braves deal down because he prefers to go elsewhere, then anyone who sees this as anything other than a two month rental is misguided. If the deal did materialize, it seems Dempster would be looking for a new home on the West coast just as soon as the Braves season is over.

I don’t fault Braves for making Uggla deal. It looked great when made However, I do fault them for doing NOTHING when he’s been terrible since he’s been here I see no changes. I was fine with this trade if something was coming back with Dempster, but after all this BS, the offer should be pulled. We should now turn our attention to Greinke and Josh Johnson.

2014: Cub’s Randall Delgado finishes 3rd in CY Young voting with 18-9 record 2.74 ERA and 193 strikeouts (don’t ask me how I got those numbers). Dodger’s Ryan Dempster announces his retirement from baseball to spend more time with family. Braves announce free agent signings of Jamie Moyer and Tim Wakefield.
Hello everyone! Delgado is not too much, and there will always be Delgados coming up. Braves have been scouting Cuba, every year, and they can find another one.
The team should focus on the bullpen and bench bats… 1 SP isn’t going to make a whole lot of difference.
Say they do get Dempster, or Greinke, or whoever… They are basically trading for 8 starts. That’s it. Id prefer Garza to Dempster if i had a choice, which i dont. But see more of a dominant front of the Rotation guy in Garza over Dempster. But both would definately be an upgrade to the Rotation.
The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if all this was part of the Cubs’ plan to try to get as much as they could out of the Dodgers.
Really… I think it helps the Dodgers! If thats the only team that Demp is willing to go to then wouldn’t it cause the Dodgers to pay less? The only decision the Cubs have to make is if they’d rather keep him. I don’t think the possible draft picks would be in play because if the Cubs offer dempster a contract then he’s going to sign it… Everything I’ve read about Demp in the past says he loves it in Chicago!!
If I hit refresh more on mlbtraderumors more often, does that make things happen? Seriously, I both hate and love this time of year, along with winter meetings. I really need to get some work done.
Garza for Delgado I could live with. Garza’s 28 and very consistent. Not an ace, but a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy who will consistently throw around 200 innings. So basically, he’s already what we hope Delgado will turn out to be.
This year aside, Garza is a better pitcher than Dempster.
If I hit refresh more on mlbtraderumors more often, does that make things happen? Seriously, I both hate and love this time of year, along with winter meetings. I really need to get some work done.
I have TweetDeck open. If something happens, it will pop up at the bottom of my computer screen immediately.
Hello everyone! Delgado is not too much, and there will always be Delgados coming up. Braves have been scouting Cuba, every year, and they can find another one.
Oh really? Why don’t we have more of them then, and why don’t more MLB teams have “Randall Delgados”
Bigger question is with Hudson’s foot staying connected to his ankle, Hanson being more consistant, Sheets holding up and Minor continuing to develop in this 2nd half and hopefully into the playoffs.
If at LEAST two of these things do not happen, whatever a starter like Dempster, or whoever, might not matter near as much as some like to think.
Not even including some streaky hitters and some holes in that pen.
You pass negative judgement on the Braves at least 2,000 times every day.
….and P.S……Braves management does not care…….or read a single one.
P.S. I live on Clearwater Beach….if you want to come on down this afternoon and fulfill your challenge from last night……even though I stopped getting into fights with thugs in the 8th grade.
Lay off Uggla. He’s the American dream. Cash in, live off the efforts of your colleagues, have no shame for poor performance, and swagger a lot when the camera’s on you. What’s not to admire?
Let’s assume that Hamels gets traded to Rangers and Dempster to Dodgers. Will Garza, Greinke, and Shields get traded and, if so, where?
David Schoenfield (2:19 PM)
Just in from MLBTradeRumors.com : 12:43pm: “Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers. While the Dodgers had interest in Dempster and were considered by some to be the favorites to acquire him, they didn’t reach an agreement with the Cubs. Chicago would lose leverage with the Dodgers if Dempster rejects a trade to the Braves, his second choice.”
It was sarcasm I was making fun of someone else’s suggestion that were better with Constanza and the Rev than we are with Chipper!! Hence the quote I placed above what I wrote!!! Geez…
So next time you post you might want to realize when people post things in italics they are quoting another blogger or writer.. and typically means you are making fun of something!!
I live in the Tampa area……and believe me…..Gaza would not and does not fit into the Braves clubhouse chemistry…..nor did he fit in well with the Rays. And probably not with the Cubs either since they are considering trades even though he is signed through next year.
So when Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets something, like Dempster does not want to come to Braves, where does he get this info: A) from the horse’s mouth aka Dempster or B) Deduces this from the fact that Dempster has not yet approved trade? — Puma
Does that make you feel better? Is this where I point out you neglected to close the parentheses? And, now I should feel better, right? Should this place be all of us pointing at each other and laughing when someone forgets an h?
I realize coming up with 100 comments a blog is difficult, but as you’re intent on doing so, could you focus your keen spelling and grammar on your own posts? ‘Preciate it.
Sorry…..but usually when you quite someone from a previous post and respond….you associate their posting name to the quite. That is why I missed it. But my post supports you, I guess.
Garza is an .076 hitter. Sheets and Hanson are completely destitute of hitting talent. I long for the days when the Braves had pitchers who could handle a bat a little bit.
I’ll wait , and see what happens with Dempster. He would be a great pitcher down the stretch, and that’s what I’m focused on. I’ll be O.K. if the braves don’t get Dempster, but also be thrilled to get Dempster. He a crafty veteran with nasty stuff.
Here’s what Gondee from the web site “Talking Chop” has to say about the Dempster trade:
“As I’ve said all along, I’d prefer this trade not happen. Dempster is not this good, he’s just in the middle of a good stretch of pitching, and who knows how long that will last. Of course, it could last the remainder of the season, but that’s a long shot given his drop in velocity this season, and abnormally low BABIP. I would also prefer that the Braves not deal away Randall Delgado, who has been solid for the Braves this year while growing into a rotation spot as a 22-year old in the Major Leagues. It would be stupid, stupid, stupid to trade him for a rental-pitcher.” — End quote.
We can get the red hot Paul Maholm or Ricky Nolasco for a bag of balls and a DOB autographed photo! The hell with Dempster, let’s upgrade the rotation with one of the above starters! MERCY
I normally don’t put a name on a quote when it’s that insanely dumb… That way they don’t get their feelings hurt and leave!! It would get boring around here without the insanity spewed out from some of the CrαZies!!
“I long for the days when the Braves had pitchers who could handle a bat a little bit.”
Totally agree, Brian. I really don’t think there’s a good reason that big-league pitchers can’t square up a fastball. I can understand looking ridiculous on stuff with a wrinkle, but 90 and straight? C’mon.
One fact remains…had the Braves starting pitchers done what everyone thought they would, the Braves would not be in this predicament of having to try to trade for a starter. They could instead be trying to acquire a powerbat and relief help. But Beachy is out, Hudson was hurt and is still a little shaky, Hanson and Jurrjens have regressed. Minor and Delgado both needed a bit more seasoning at AAA. So instead of the solid and top-notch rotation, we have a questionable one. I am glad I am not the GM.
Does that make you feel better? Is this where I point out you neglected to close the parentheses? And, now I should feel better, right? Should this place be all of us pointing at each other and laughing when someone forgets an h?
I was doing my best to correct the corrector ( as she’s been called)
Okay, seriously, I didn’t close the parentheses due to the smiley I put in…. I got a 36 on the English portion of my ACT, thank you very much. (HS GPA of 4.34 btw) I can spell and create grammatically correct sentences.

You want a pitcher who pitches 4 to 5 innings every game, and not consistant. Delgado is not what you need down the stretch.

Breaking news:
Just in from MLBTradeRumors.com : 12:43pm: “Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers. While the Dodgers had interest in Dempster and were considered by some to be the favorites to acquire him, they didn’t reach an agreement with the Cubs. Chicago would lose leverage with the Dodgers if Dempster rejects a trade to the Braves, his second choice.”

That wouldn’t bother me, Tampa. I think the Braves’ clubhouse could use a little bit of a shakeup anyway. Too many nice guys.
This is Garza’s fifth full season. Every year, his ERA has been between 3.32 and 3.95. The Braves need consistency like that.

TALKING CHOP ON THE DEMPSTER TRADE
