What I think is funny in all of this is that everybody that that Dempster’s former “ties” to Wren and Fredi is what made the Braves a good fit. What does that say about Fredi if apparently Dempster has no interest in playing for him again?
Now all the people bitching about over-paying can go back to bitching about Wren not doing anything to help the club in 2012.
can you imagine the reaction if Wren actually trades for Greinke, considering how much more talent he will cost? still some of the same people complaining about Delgado trade are calling for Greinke trade

Just in from MLBTradeRumors.com : 12:43pm: “Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers. While the Dodgers had interest in Dempster and were considered by some to be the favorites to acquire him, they didn’t reach an agreement with the Cubs. Chicago would lose leverage with the Dodgers if Dempster rejects a trade to the Braves, his second choice.”
He had 10/5 rights. This was his 6th season in Houston and his 14th season in the majors. – TennesseePaul This confused me also, so I scavenged for some info and apparently he waived his 10 to 5 for a partial no trade clause.
Nothing new really being reported, all along we knew Dempster wanted to go to the Dodgers first and Braves second. Still the case, he’s probably holding out for the Cubs to throw in some $$ for him to waive his 10/5 rights. I mean come on, he would only be in ATL 2 months then he can resign with the Dodgers in the offseason if he’d like.
Let’s hope Uggla gets it turned around- I have a feeling taht he’ll get hot nad stay hot until the end of teh season- was the old Marlins Park that much more of a hitters park than Turner ?
Dam… I’d really rather not see our former prospects on another Eastern Division team. I really like Josh, but for that reason I’m not sure I’d deal for him!! Losing Omar and Dunn for Uggla wasn’t that big of a deal to me, but giving them a potential top end starter does!!
The biggest fool in this whole deal appears to be Theo. If Dempster’s comments are real, it appears that Theo put together a deal assuming Dempster would just sign on to it
Screw Ryan Dempster! I never wanted this guy anyway and said as much last week. He’s a decent pitcher that’s been on a great run this year. He’s never pitched this well before and he’ll never pitch this well again. He’s not a guy you can count on to win you two games in a playoff series.
Dempster may actually be saving Frank Wren from himself. This would be an ill-conceived deal.
Again, why in the world were these prices not this high when we were trading Tex? We try to sell and get the Kotch-meister. Other teams sell and they get 5 years of a solid young pitcher.
Well at least we know that if Dempster is traded here and there is a press conference he will say he always wanted to be traded to such a class organization and is looking forward to helping the Braves win it all in 2012. Or replace the Braves with the Dodgers.
Continuing with the fiasco of trying to trade for Dempster can only be viewed now as desperation on the Braves part. I would so much rather not make the playoffs this year than to cave in to anyone’s demands or have any player handcuff us. Please Wren, scrap the plan of getting a starter and get us some righthanded outfielders for the bench.
The biggest fool in this whole deal appears to be Theo. If Dempster’s comments are real, it appears that Theo put together a deal assuming Dempster would just sign on to it
Not really. Neither Theo nor Wren has said anything publicly about this potential trade. The player accepting the deal is part of the process. I doubt Theo made any sort of grand assumptions. It’s just that in this day and age, the entire process gets leaked and tweeted about.
Same trading partner and different player, after agreeing on compensation? Zero leverage for the Braves in that scenario. Cubs can rightfully point to a rental being worth Delgado, and raise the ante for a player with more contract control. Those negotiations probably start badly and get worse, while the clock ticks.
So he did Austin. Crazy. I wonder if the rights are still in place after a trade or if they get voided… I think though, he could waive them if he so chooses.
Didn’t Carlos Lee blocka trade to the Dodgers and agreed to a trade with the Marlins?
Not exactly. Carlos Lee waived his 10-5 rights with the Astros in exchange for a “limited NTC”, which allowed him to name certain teams that he would have to approve a trade to. The Dodgers were on that list, which is why he was able to block them. The Marlins were not on the list, which is why he’s in Miami.

Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers.
F*** him then!!! The Dodgers will offer less than they previously did now!! Any hopes of returning to the Cubs are probably being ruined by his Dwight Howard type actions!!
Is anyone really getting tired of all this? Dempster traded to Braves — wait a second, it’s not a done deal, wait wait wait, nope, he prefers the Dodgers….Furcal is a Brave, wait wait wait, nope, he is resigning with the Dodgers….A Peavy deal in the works?, wait wait wait, nope, didn’t happen….Burnett on his way? wait wait wait, nope, he chose the Yankees.

This is the digital age, where everything happens in real time. The only way to avoid is to stay off the internet.
This could potentially make things worse. In fact, it has a high probablity of making things a lot harder.
While that’s certainly possible (even probable), the market is still developing. If the Phillies and Marlins suddenly decide that “everything must go”, that potentially adds 2 premium pitchers to the market in Hamels and Johnson (although Hamels has arguably already been a part of the market). The Tigers acquisition of Anibal takes one more buyer off the market, decreasing demand without really affecting the known supply. Still a lot of ways this one could go, but you are likely right that it makes things tougher on the Braves. It’s possible they could wait things out and end up with a great deal, but there is a huge risk that attempting that will leave them without a chair when the music stops. Better to slightly overpay and go ahead and get something done.
If I was FW I would definately pull the trade off the table. If Dempster changes his mind and is willing to entertain a trade to the Braves later on, we can re-engage the Cubs…but the price will be lower since Dempster is taking away all their leverage. .
Just in from MLBTradeRumors.com : 12:43pm: “Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Sometimes I wonder about these leaks… It seems almost all possible trades get found out about before it happens. You’d think the GM’s would be in better control of their FO staff!! I’d have rules in place that would terminate anyone that was found to be leaking info to the media!! Seems crazy that it can’t be handled better!!
I’m starting to think the most prudent play would be to just sit tight for this year and hope for the best. Maybe try to improve the bench at the deadline, as doing so wouldn’t cost us highly touted prospects.
It’s obvious that getting a sought-after SP is going to cost us at least one major piece in our future plans. Unless you’re convinced that guy will get us to the playoffs, it’s not worth it.
We can get Greinke this offseason. He wants to play here. I’d let Bourn walk if that’s what it takes.
We do have other alternatives. Strengthen the bench and the bullpen and pray.
Since the thought of moving Degado and Teheran for Greinke makes me want to curl up in a fetal ball, I believe I’ll go along with you.
Truth is, I don’t see how Wren could trade both players. It seems almost a certainty that one of them has to be in the rotation next year, considering the outlay for FA pitching that Wren appears to have waiting for him in the winter.
Why does stuff like this always seem to happened to the Braves? Other teams seem to pull off trades seemlessly, but the Braves have to go through hell.
I dont blame Dempster for wanting to keep his family closer to Vancouver, definitely a much shorter flight from LA to Vancouver than from Atlanta to Vancouver.
But my beef is he shouldnt have said he wanted to play for the Braves second after the Dodgers. The Dodgers fell through, now go to your second choice, wait, you dont want to go to your second choice, then screw you then!
So when Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets something, like Dempster does not want to come to Braves, where does he get this info: A) from the horse’s mouth aka Dempster or B) Deduces this from the fact that Dempster has not yet approved trade?
These guys tweet all kinds of crap hoping it sticks to make them look like they have the inside scoop on stuff when really they are only slightly more informed than we are.
I also wonder who these unnamed sources are from within the organization. Who in their right mind would leak some news about their employer and jeopardize a freakin sweet job working in baseball? What could they possibly get from Ken Rosenthal in exchange for information? Makes me appreciate DOBs twitter restraint.
From what I read Dempster has family issues that are tying him to the West coast:
But he still would prefer to be on the west coast, one source said.
Dempster, a native of Gibsons, British Columbia, still has family in the Vancouver area. He has three children – Brady, 5; Riley, 3; and Finlay, 1 – and wants them to be close to his relatives, sources said.
Riley suffers from DiGeorge Syndrome, a genetic disorder that makes it difficult to swallow and eat and can create numerous other symptoms. She underwent surgeries to insert a tracheal tube and feeding tube when she was a baby.
Gives me a little clarity as to why it is taken so long. i figure if its not done by today, FW moves on and goes to Plan B. No harm, no foul. The hardest part is finding a place in the lineup and in the field to get a bat. There is going to be a point where Uggla is going to have to sit and Prado goes to 2B. We will need a righty LF to step in.
But my beef is he shouldnt have said he wanted to play for the Braves second after the Dodgers.
Keep in mind that this is all second- or third-hand. We haven’t heard directly from Dempster about anything aside from his tweets today and yesterday. How much of the “relayed” information about his motives can we be confident in?
I think it is funny the # of people who are posting “This just in at 12:43pm cst” which is 1:43pm est which is almost 30 minutes ago, but if you feel it is “just in” well then by all means let’s keep posting it til gametime.
And by-the-way………alot of “sources” this time of year are not 100% accurate so I wouldn’t believe anything until it happens or the people involved say it directly. So many rumors and mis-information making the rounds right now………….
My problem is with everyone sports writer and columnist trying to get whatever leaked information out to the public as fast as they can so they are the first to report it, instead of actually making sure of the information first before posting it.
I dont believe any of these yahoos like ken rosenthal, jon heyman, or any of these so called “in-siders”…. they have to make money and if they dont stir the pot they cant get paid!!!
How soon we forget” When Canstanza was in left and Pastornicky was playing short the braves were ten games over five hundred and in first place. When Chipper decided he wanted to play again it took the speed out of the lineup. With no speed to worry the pitcher can concentrate and make less mistates to the hitter. This has affected Uggly more than most hitters. Since the speed was removed, the team has played under five hundred for five or six weeks. If the braves are serious about being in the playoffs they have to put the speed back into the lineup.
I’m not going to cast asperions on Dempster’s motives either. He’s a 10-and-5 guy, so he’s earned the right to veto a trade. I just don’t think he’s the answer to our woes. Forget Dempster and move on.
maybe he wants to go to a real organization ?– peter
Well he has said in the past he wants to finish his career in Chicago… So If your definition of a real organization is one that consistently fields a team that has a chance to be in the playoffs then I doubt he cares about playing for a “real” organization!!

If we can’t get Dempster, go after Shields, or take a chance on Josh Johnson if the Marlins really are having an all-out fire sale.
Still, I say go get a bullpen arm and move Meds into the rotation.

If Dempster changes his mind and is willing to entertain a trade to the Braves later on, we can re-engage the Cubs…but the price will be lower since Dempster is taking away all their leverage. .

The problem for front offices is, even if they stay off the internet, the people who are reporting their leaks don’t.

Well he has said in the past he wants to finish his career in Chicago… So If your definition of a real organization is one that consistently fields a team that has a chance to be in the playoffs then I doubt he cares about playing for a “real” organization!!
