Didn’t Greg Walker say recently (paraphrasing), “Uggla is more of a feel hitter; not a mechanics guy.” To me, that says he’s uncoachable. Not a good sign. 3 more years of this to look forward to…
I know some very knowledgable Cubs’ fans who are excited about this possible Delgado-Dempster deal. As I mentioned in the last blog: About the deal, Wren!!! Abort!!! We need affordable young pitching going forward as the payroll will not likely increase for many years. Plus, Dempster will probably lose steam as the season progresses.
In scouting terms I think Dempster is a #3 right now (in spite of his ERA). His BABIP and homers per fly ball are unusually low and the percentage of runners he’s left on base is unusually high. All those things suggest he’s due for a downfall. He’s not an true ace or anything all that close. He’s a good pitcher but he’s older and he’s probably not going to be worth what he can command on the free agent market. The Braves shouldn’t even think about extending him. He’s a #3 now but he could become a #4 or worse pretty quickly at his age.
I just don’t see how having him for two months makes all that much difference over Delgado, Minor, Medlen, etc. I think at best he’ll be worth maybe an extra win or two. Maybe that will be the difference. But it seems there have to be more efficient ways to pick up an extra win or two.
All that said, I guess I understand the desperation and the front office trying to show the players they are trying to improve and going for it and all that. But this trade concerns me, if it goes through as reported.
Wish it was Hanson and Jurrjens being traded, not Delgado. I am tired of watching these slow-working junk-ballers on the mound for the Braves. _ mountain_jim
You may get your wish regarding JJ, at least as a throw in. Either way I think we have seen the last of him with the Braves.
Chicago Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster does not want to be traded to the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources.
At least not right now.
…
The pitcher instead wants to be sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were unable to reach agreement with the Cubs on a suitable deal, sources said.
That will make for some interesting days in Atlanta if he does eventually accept the deal.
Rosenthal isn’t reporting that Dempster has categorically rejected a trade to the Braves. He’s waiting to see if they can strike a deal with Los Angeles.
but spending a few days hitting balls back up the middle and going to right field for some singles and doubles would still help the team and, hey, just might get his confidence and swing back on track.
I don’t believe closing his stance and taking a different swing arc would exactly get his power stroke “back on track”, since that would be a more-than-radical change. You think he can go into the cage one day and alter his swing that much? If that were true, he’d already have his current problems licked, no?
Sounds like the Dodgers are still in this. They aren’t willing to part with Zach Lee for a 2 month rental and I don’t think the Dodgers will change their minds there. Theo might have to settle for less with LAD.
I really hate what happened with Dan Uggly for the Atlanta Braves. It’s kind of like what happened with Joe Mauer and the extension he signed with MN. The Braves should have had him play through a year with them before signing him to the contract. The reason why they offered him the contract was to save money, which in reality is really going to wind up costing Atlanta money. I think if he does not turn around his performance the Braves are going to be stuck with more dead weight on the payroll. This team made too many good moves and got really lucky in the 90s and early 00s. Now their luck just seems to have run out. We’re like the Yankees with the guy making 13mil/yr bating 7th. A good rule of thumb in baseball should be not to extend players until they reach free agency, see Nate McClouth, Joe Mauer, Alex Rodriguez and arguably Chipper Jones, etc. 14 mil for 8 hrs, come on.
“Colon couldn’t throw anything but heat from what I recall. He got lit up in the majors.”
True what is being said, but much of that is hind-sight. Before the Braves finally gave up on him, he was touted by the organization and media as the next big thing in ATL.
Delgado has potential, but put me in the camp of those who think he isn’t a future Cy Young candidate.
My gut says that the Cubs are more desperate to trade Dempster than Dempster is to be traded. That makes it more likely they would cave to the Dodgers’ lesser offer.
Your acting like we’re trading a prospect for Dempster.. that’s not the case. We’re trading a very young rookie pitcher that’s had success at a very young age for an aging pitcher having a career year, been on the DL twice and is a rental. The price we paid was extremely too high, Wren should have walked away from the table.
Scary to think about potentially 3 of our starting pitchers being 35 or older if we get Dempsey especially with two of them being surgically repaired. No rental players Frank; either they sign an extension before we accept the trade or they can go fry fish. Delgado is not a lost cause. Unfortunately Uggla is. Prevailing thought is that a player will always end the season close to his average of the previous seasons in all categories. Uggla may/will prove the exception to this rule. Bad news for us since he has and will for three more years take a big bite out of our budget.
Atlanta is now almost an innocent bystander between the Cubs and Dempster.
Should Wren come to the same conclusion, he’ll pull the deal. Might do that, anyway. I doubt that he would have to start from scratch on other deals; probably has the groundwork laid for at least a Plan B.
It’s obvious that Dempster doesn’t want to come to Atlanta. Foxsports has sources that say he doesn’t. So Let’s go get Grienke!. We need someone that wants to be here or else their pitching will reflect their attitude

The Braves organization will tout a young prospect. They touted Ryan Langerhans. It’s what they do. They put the tout machine in motion with Tyler Flowers and then flipped him to the White Sox.
My theory is Dempster found out Braves were offering their best young pitching prospect in exchange for a 2-month rental of his services, and decided he’d rather play for a team with more competent management…like the Cubs.
As I said Scoots, I’m not worried about his power stroke. If he truly is a feel hitter, then mentally telling himself to just focus on hitting the ball back up the middle and forget about pulling with power and earning his money that way would probably help. I’d rather have that than a .126 average with a couple of homers. But it doesnt really matter anyway. It is what it is.
As far as Dempster goes….Wren needs to move on. If he is that set on playing on the West Coast, then he clearly won’t sign an extension and is not worth trading Delgado for 2 months of play, IMO. Screw him. Why even put the Braves on his list if he doesn’t want to come?
It’s obvious that Dempster doesn’t want to come to Atlanta.
No, it’s not. Dempster has a lot of reasons to want to be traded to Los Angeles. That doesn’t necessarily say anything about what he thinks of Atlanta. He’s using the 10/5 rights he’s earned to try to play where he thinks is best.
Somebody should ask dempster if the city and not the ball club has anything to do with his druthers. Chicago or LA vs ATL? Atlanta’s just not everyone’s cup of tea.
Mountain Jim: I have to agree with you. I’d rather trade Hanson than Delgado. Hanson is done. Can’t top 89. So if he can’t get strikes on his curve, all the batter has to do is wait for the weak cheese. I believe he needs surgery to regain shoulder strength and velocity.
I doubt that he would have to start from scratch on other deals; probably has the groundwork laid for at least a Plan B.
And there has been mention that he doesn’t want to wait long for a deal. Be interesting to see what comes of this. Hoping it doesn’t mean he goes with Teheran and another Top -15 prospect for 2 months of Greinke. Really, really hope that doesn’t happen.
What I’m most afraid of is that the Braves go out on a limb and trade for Dempster or some other high priced pitcher and then they fall flat on their face here. That’s why I’m not concerned about it being just a rental. I’d rather not go through another signing like that of Lowe, Kawakami, McLouth, and yes…Uggla. What the hell is it with these guys that come here and then flounder? Outside of Bourn, it’s been a bust.
And not to beat a dead horse, but I would so much rather see Wren go out and get two right handed outfielders that can replace Bourn and Heyward against lefties. It’s just atrocious how bad we look against lefties like we also have against us tonight. In all reality, we lose this series tonight because Prado and Chipper are the only two guys from the right side that we can count on.
12:43pm: Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers. While the Dodgers had interest in Dempster and were considered by some to be the favorites to acquire him, they didn’t reach an agreement with the Cubs. Chicago would lose leverage with the Dodgers if Dempster rejects a trade to the Braves, his second choice.
He doesn’t want to come here…. shocker… Looks like I was right to believe those rumors yesterday… Cut bait and try for Greinke I guess…
Oh boy. I wouldn’t be too happy if this deal was vetoed and Wren caved on the deal for Greinke(Teheran and another). Wouldn’t be cool and would look very foolish of Frank.
Well now I guess we go get Vargas or Liriano…..makes me so excited!!(Sarcasm) Guess it truly does excite some people here who didn’t want to give up a prospect for the NL ERA leader.
Dempster is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. The Cubs, under the new collective-bargaining agreement, would receive a draft pick for him only if they made him a one-year offer in the $12 million range.
If Dempster approves a trade, he might only be with his new team only for a short period of time. But he still would prefer to be on the west coast, one source said.
Dempster, a native of Gibsons, British Columbia, still has family in the Vancouver area. He has three children – Brady, 5; Riley, 3; and Finlay, 1 – and wants them to be close to his relatives, sources said.
Riley suffers from DiGeorge Syndrome, a genetic disorder that makes it difficult to swallow and eat and can create numerous other symptoms. She underwent surgeries to insert a tracheal tube and feeding tube when she was a baby.
So you ask me repeatedly if I liked the trade idea, and when I finally respond that, yes, if Dempster continues to pitch well, I like it, you do noting but mock me. If you are trying to be funny, it’s not working, and if you are serious, well, I’ve got nothing more to say to you.
If you aren’t crazy about the reported Dempster trade possibility, it doesn’t mean you think Randall Delgado is a future ace. It probably says more about what you think of Dempster.
There was some serious miscommunication between Dempster and the Cubs brass. They would not have gone this far with the braves if they had any idea he would not approve the trade. This could hurt the cubs in the value of Dempster with the Dodgers and at this point, do you think Wren wants Dempster if he doesn’t want to come here? I am guessing Wren would want to talk directly to Dempster or at least his agent before it goes any further.
If he truly is a feel hitter, then mentally telling himself to just focus on hitting the ball back up the middle and forget about pulling with power and earning his money that way would probably help.
Hey, listen, you’re probably right about that. I’ve gotten to the point of overreacting to most of the Uggla stuff posted here, because most of it is so bleepin’ clueless. I shouldn’t have lumped you with that.
When Frank (The Genius) Wren gave Uggla that ridiculous contract extention I predicted that the Braves would end up with another Derek Lowe situation; an underachiever with a virtually untradable contract. Pretty much the way its gone down so far.
Didn’t Carlos Lee blocka trade to the Dodgers and agreed to a trade with the Marlins? – Efrom The Marlins were not listed on his limited no-trade clause, he had no choice.
As for Hanson and Jurrjens losing mph on their fastballs, I’d point out that Glavine and Maddux had the same kinda speeds on their fastballs. The difference with those two was that they could pitch to spots without leaving too many out over the plate, and they were masters at changing speeds. Hanson and Jurrjens don’t have that ability, or focus. I would rather release Jurrjens right now and trade Hanson before he has no trade value left. I’m not a believer of Teheran and would trade him for a rental before I’d let either Delgado or Vizcaino go. And as for Minor, all he needs is to get more mentally tough. He has been doing great lately and hopefully that will become a regular thing with him.
Boy you think these folks in here are crying now about losing that future multiple Cy Young winner Delgado…wait and see how bad they cry when the Braves give the Brewers what they want….OMG!!!
Oh boy. I wouldn’t be too happy if this deal was vetoed and Wren caved on the deal for Greinke(Teheran and another). Wouldn’t be cool and would look very foolish of Frank.
This.
On the other hand it would save a draft pick…
I’d rather lose 1 pick than 2 or more top prospects.
So you ask me repeatedly if I liked the trade idea, and when I finally respond that, yes, if Dempster continues to pitch well, I like it, you do noting but mock me. If you are trying to be funny, it’s not working, and if you are serious, well, I’ve got nothing more to say to you.
Sorry cab… (it’s nothing, not noting btw
Anyways, I was just stating that Dempster either is coming to ATL or LA…. both places that you can follow him easily. Still surprised that you don’t mind the rental though, I thought for sure that you were against those types of trades.
Dempster doesn’t want to be traded to the Braves right now, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Instead, the right-hander hopes to be dealt to the Dodgers. Oh well. Now all the people bitching about over-paying can go back to bitching about Wren not doing anything to help the club in 2012. It a wonderfully viscious circle of idiocy….. and damn entertaining.
At this point, I could care less whether the deal goes through or not. I’m tired of all the speculation. Boy, this worse than what the ’speculators’ do to jack up the price of oil/gas.
With still almost a week to go before the trade deadline and Dempster having most of the leverage on any trade, there really is no rush to approve any deal unless all his demands/requests are being met. Dempster is probably just looking out for his best interests, as well he should be. I doubt he is so surprised or miffed about any leaking of information that he would respond to that by delaying approval of a deal out of spite. Hopefully this 35-year-old man is more mature than that. He is likely just trying to negotiate the most favorable outcome possble for him and those close to him. If he gets whatever he;s asking for, he will approve the deal. But he and the other parties involved may have to play the waiting game to get to the conclusion.
Of course, rumors, hearsay, and speculation can be a lot more entertaining than reality.
Coming in second is the Braves, who still have a valuable trading chip in hand.
Just read Jayson Stark say they have no interest in Liriano or Vargas. That leaves only a few others – mainly Greinke to acquire. Man, this could go from bad(Delgado for 2 months of Dempster) to substantially worse(Teheran and another Top 15 prospect for 2 months of Greinke).
looks like time to look for positives in Vargas to justify his trade …..
Man, just…hush. Please.
I know I said that if Wren’s upgrade turned out to be Sheets and Medlen, I wouldn’t be too happy. But that scenario would bring me to tears of joy compared to my viewing Vargas wearing the tomahawk.
Now all the people bitching about over-paying can go back to bitching about Wren not doing anything to help the club in 2012
Too bad it isn’t that simple, otherwise your very un-n8-length post would be pertinent. Not everyone calling issue with the price was complaining about Wren “not doing anything.”
This was discussed after the game Sunday. We CAN trade Uggla and make the team better.
The Cubs just promoted a rookie first baseman. That pushes their current first baseman to left field. They have another rookie outfielder in the minors they would like to promote. Soriano is blocking both these youngsters and has a “bad” contract but is still a pretty good player. The Cubs need a second baseman. Baseball Insider was quoted as saying the Cubs will consider paying part of Soriano” contract and/or accept a “bad” contract in return. Both Soriano and Uggla are owed 36 million on the remainder of their contracts. Simple Uggla for Soriano. Both teams win.
Man, this could go from bad(Delgado for 2 months of Dempster) to substantially worse…
Gotta think if they go for Grienke, they will request and make part of it, a negotiation period. I doubt they would give up that much for him for 2 months of play.

In all reality, we lose this series tonight because Prado and Chipper are the only two guys from the right side that we can count on.

ok, forget Dempster
