Carrie Muskat / MLB.com reports — Ryan Dempster will most likely be dealt before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline — just not likely on Monday to the Braves in exchange for young right-hander Randall Delgado, who was reportedly in line to be included in the deal.
Let us all pray this is true!
Kinda early to fall apart, even for Minor
July 23rd, 20127:22 pm
Ok I give up on expecting a sports reporter to AcTuALLy report the facts about stories….so I’ll ask: Dempster right handed or left handed?
Please AJC, do your job, not every reader has every fact about every player and would expect a modicum of important basic information as that in a basic story about an important trade. Not too much to ask for.
can we trade minor?
July 23rd, 20127:23 pm
We would like a deal, but use some common sense about it. GEEZ

Jesus, this trade smells like Doyle Alexander in the 80s. The braves aren’t good enough for this one pitcher to put them over the top. This team is so wildly inconsistent, giving away a good young arm for an old arm isn’t the answer. Greinke is an upgrade. Liriano is an upgrade. This team isn’t good enough to rent a player at the cost of a good young arm. Hanson sucks, Hudson is doin his beat impression of Jekyl and hyde, Minor is young, Sheets could be good again but who knows and JJ should be traded for a case of sunflower seeds. Dempster added to the mix doesn’t give me visions of the 95 Braves.
I am not dead set against trading Delgado, but I would want to trade for someone that wants to play for the Braves this year and in the future.
July 23rd, 20127:25 pm
Nobody trade a young arm for a two month rental pitcher with 35 years old….is a mistake….delghdo can impruve while dempster will be a FA so soon!!! Bad move ….
First hard hit ball gets a double play for Minor. Ok – get this guy and we’re fine.
July 23rd, 20127:26 pm
I don’t mind trading for Dempster………..just don’t give up a guy like Delgado. Dempster is a rental. He’ll re-sign with the cubs or a west coast team in the off season.
Well, well, well…. Minor having some ‘minor’ problems in the first inning again. Wish they’d find someone to replace this clown. He’s the definition of Inconsistency. Not a fan of Delgado either really, maybe in time they would be better but not yet. Far from elite, they are.

Teddy B – are you watching the game? Minor pitched very well – two of the three hits were on pitches that weren’t strikes, and the only hard hit balls were the double play and the 3rd out. Minor is fine.
Not saying that Dempster is the answer, but those of you saying that its a bad trade because Delgado is involved are smoking some good crap and should pass it on instead of hogging it all. I would prefer Greinke because he is younger if nothing else. Trading Delgado doesn’t faze me in the least, I don’t think that kid will ever amount to much. Just my opinion people.
On a side note, looks like Minor is up to his usual stuff. This is why the Braves need to make a trade, because their starting pitching absolutely sucks. If they don’t start taking out the trash, they will fall out of contention very quickly.
re we watching the same game? Minor gave up one hard hit ball and it was a double play.

July 23rd, 20127:31 pm
can we include minor in that trade for maybe a bat boy.
July 23rd, 20127:32 pm
<font size="8" dang!
July 23rd, 20127:34 pm
Wow we smokin ain’t we
July 23rd, 20127:35 pm
Source: Dempster to Braves; he says ‘no trade’
July 23rd, 20127:36 pm
IMO both Delgado and Minor would benefit from better tutoring. It seems to me that Braves SPs tend to regress rather than progress, and that can be laid at the feet of one Roger McDowell.
Delgado and Minor have the stuff to be very good but they need someone who can bring it out and quite frankly, I don’t think McDowell has it in him to do that.
July 23rd, 20127:38 pm
Braves fans I talk to say dont make this deal . If this guy doesnt want to be in Atlanta good . Keep Carlos and build a team with the guys you have
Dempster is the answer for this year.
July 23rd, 20127:39 pm
Why don’t we just forfeit all the Monday games and give our players an extra days rest
If the deal doesn’t go through, I agree, the big loser is Theo Epstein. I like Dempster but am not comfortable trading Delgado at this point, unless the contract extension for Dempster is included and I doubt it is. Surely there is a veteran starter out there who, along with Sheets, upgrades our starters significantly without giving up Teheran, Delgado, or Viscaino.
July 23rd, 20127:40 pm
Yep – its Mental Midget Monday & these Braves have a will to lose. This team sure knows how to frustrate its fan base!
This is a STUPID trade!! I would rather lose this year than give ANY top prospects for a rental player that is really winning with mirrors. Please no!!!!!!!!
Even a moments hesitation on his part, don’t sign him.
Gnats followed the Braves down to Florida, and just put on some Marlins uniforms. Marlins players are in Gnats uniforms playing the Mets. What a nasty trick!
July 23rd, 20127:41 pm
July 23rd, 20127:43 pm
Minor can’t get ahead of the Marlins B team. Ho hum just another Monday ,Braves are already beat before the 3rd inning.
Can we just please win on Monday just one Monday. Please. Is that so hard to do?
Something I told my friend this afternoon is coming back to haunt me. I said, “Braves shouldn’t have any problems with the Marlins tonight, Stanton is out, so no sweat”. How stupid could I be?
July 23rd, 20127:44 pm
Let’s be honest, There is no way that this team is going to win the World Series this year. Why can’t we sell off Hudson, Uggla, and Bourn for some prospects and use the cash on some top Free Agents next year?
July 23rd, 20127:45 pm
Dempster’s Twitter is blowing up but he still insists this trade isn’t happening. He’s a 10/5 guy so he’s the boss.
This ballpark looks like it should be sitting right smack down in the middle of Havana, Cuba. Ugly and gaudy!
July 23rd, 20127:46 pm
What are you going to get for Uggla?
July 23rd, 20127:47 pm
We have been hoarding prospects for years. As a result, we have not been to the playoffs, outside of 2005, for years.
Make the trade!!!!!
July 23rd, 20127:48 pm
Why is Uggla in the game? Why is he batting 7th? I hear he went 1 for 5 with 3 strike outs earlier today in batting practice.
July 23rd, 20127:49 pm
You people are poisoned by Cox to expect prospects of the future to be the answer. Tehran, Delgado, and others are not cutting it. Make the Trade!!
July 23rd, 20127:50 pm
Sucks having three automatic outs in the lineup every game. Good job Wren, Janish has been amazing!
July 23rd, 20127:51 pm
The goal is the World Series you backward thinking individuals!!!
Make the Trade!
July 23rd, 20127:52 pm
where is offense coming from Dr.Braves
July 23rd, 20127:53 pm
Awful, awful trade. I hope Dempster nixes it. Give away a future #1 starter (potentially) who could pitch for you for the next 10 years for a guy, who granted is a great pitcher, that is in his mid-30’s in a contract year. Best case scenario is we make the trade and Dempster signs a long term deal. Worst case is we trade away the future for 15 or so starts by Dempster. Last time we signed a 30+ year old pitcher to a mammoth deal didn’t work out so well for us.
I hope this doesn’t happen.
July 23rd, 20127:55 pm
well yes joe maybe we will just hold them to one run per inning.
AGH…Gopher Ball Mike + Gopher Ball Tommy + Gopher Ball JJ, and so it goes.
Now that Omar has lef the Marlins, the Braves should give back Dan Uggla. (PLEASE GIVE WORTHLESS DAN BACK…anything to get him out of Atlanta).
Chip Caray started the broadcast with, “The hot Atlanta Braves…”. Apparently Chip has forgotten Saturday and Sunday in Washington…brain dead, as usual.
The Braves line-up has mailed in 3 innings of AB’s so far tonight…just like the last 15 innings in Washington. Pretty patheic.
Gonna be a long night. The joke continues…
July 23rd, 20127:56 pm
We are #2 in the East. That’s from offense. To answer you more specifically, when Simmons comes back, it will improve. Our offense is not the problem, our 3rd from the bottom starting pitching is the problem.
July 23rd, 20127:57 pm
IF the Braves get Dempster (who apparently after playing for Gonzalez & Wren is NOT eager to return to that brain trust) for Delgado, you still have loses every rotation from Hanson, Minor, and Jurgens in addition to the fact that the bullpen will remain blown up by having to pitch 3-4 innings every time these wusses pitch.
July 23rd, 20127:58 pm
At 35, Dempster is no answer. I, too, hope that the trade does not go through
Maybe a happy meal and extra fry.
Thank you, bamakirk. You are a voice of reason.
Why is Wren so high on this guy? This is the exact opposite thing we need, a 35 year old pitcher for a 22 year old pitcher? What happened to keeping the young arms together? Delgado has the potential to be better then Dempster ever has been. Look at the career numbers, Wren is gonna give up a sold 22 yr old prospect for a pitcher who has an era of 4.30, and then you want to extend the guy? Is this Derek Lowe 2.0? Come on Wren, pull back this trade while you can.
July 23rd, 20127:59 pm
Lineup just too streaky to win division. Needs upgrade badly but Wren cannot see it.
July 23rd, 20128:02 pm
We should try to get Nolan Ryan, Clemente and Mantle. Are they available? Maybe we could give them Janish and Delgado. That sounds like a good trade to me.
Boy we swang at everything that comes our way NO CLUE.
July 23rd, 20128:04 pm
I am calling it right now this will be a perfect game from the Marlins
July 23rd, 20128:05 pm
JH back in his ground outs to second funk.
July 23rd, 20128:08 pm
Well well. Loser Monday. Gonna be a perfect game for Marlins. Probably 15 to 0. Great pitchers on this team. Hansen, Jurrgens, and Minor could not make it with any other team. Oh I forgot about Martinez, Varraro or whatever his name is, and Gas Can Durban.
If we get Dempster, we’re a better team NOW. With Chipper not shy about pointing to the inconsistent pitching (why should he be?) and fans eager for a push in his final season, I can see Wren’s thinking.
Does it make the most sense? I’m not really sure… if we get him to sign an extension in the deal, I like it. Delgado has shown some promise this season and I hate to see him on the block, but with so many teams after a good arm right now I wouldn’t expect Minor to be a strong enough trade option.
If it does end up happening, I hope we can get him for ~2 years. Anything more is risky given his age.
I think the club should just call in sick on monday because they make the fans sick.
July 23rd, 20128:09 pm
Hoping Wren doesn’t do a long-term extension. Last thing ATL needs is an overpriced, aging starter that they’ll end up giving/trading to Cleveland after realizing they made a huge mistake. This could get ugly. Would rather have seen Greinke…
Everything Minor does is awful.
July 23rd, 20128:12 pm
I don’t like the deal anyway. Hes not a pitcher who can pitch solid in the post season and he will not resign with us next season. I would rather put our proven starter Medlen in the rotation., Why hes still in the pen is beyond me. He is proven and there he sits for 2 innings here and there while they let Minor and Delgado blow up over and over. We added Sheets, now put Medlen where he belongs. Medlen would give us a chance to win where the other two implode over and over.
July 23rd, 20128:13 pm
Will say, though, that ATL does have a lot of young talent that teams drool over. Nice bargaining chips to get guys who are having great seasons. Braves are trying to contend and can’t won’t get anywhere relying on these young arms this season. Needed more solid arms. Braves are stronger now than yesterday (if the trade is approved) and I doublt anyone will be complaining if ATL wins the pennant.
Braves Fan. Logic is not a consideration for Wren or Fredi.
July 23rd, 20128:15 pm
Dumpster’s not a game changer…yawn at this trade.
If we get Dempster can we dump JJ, HansonHomer, and Minor.
You could have a no hitter going for our pitcher tonight and we would not have a run.
July 23rd, 20128:16 pm
they should listen to us.
McCann was pouring on the coals there.
well go on to the dugout BigMac.
July 23rd, 20128:17 pm
To all the armchair experts we need to win bottom line we still have good arms on the farm ready to make a move in a year or so
Delgado is not the answer I am starting to think Hanson may not be the answer also I may be wrong but his last two starts were home run derby
His fastball is flat and is good at throwing a great hanging curve back back back its out of here
July 23rd, 20128:20 pm
In reality there aare some fans on this blog that knows a little baseball. In my opinion.
July 23rd, 20128:21 pm
Well at least the no hitter is avoided. Next goal, – avoid a shutout. Baby steps Monday
July 23rd, 20128:23 pm
I agree with everyone who says Medlen should be given a rotation spot back. I disagree that Delgado is some sort of untouchable…Teheran is a way more complete pitcher, just having some trouble getting it together right now. I don’t like to watch a rookie pitcher shrugging off called pitches from two of the best catchers in the National League. And I didn’t like watching Ross begging him all night to keep the ball down. A big league pitcher shouldn’t have to be told to keep his off-speed stuff down. With Vizcaino and Beachy coming back healthy next year, and Teheran, Delgado, Minor, and Gilmartin all coming along, we can spare an arm with potential to get a guy that can pitch right now and push us over the top for a chance to compete for a World Series now, while we still have the heart and soul of the club for one more run in Chipper Jones. Next year, we are going to need a leader, and as much as I like McCann, Heyward, and Freeman…right now I don’t see one!
July 23rd, 20128:26 pm
Braves fans want instant gratification with their Young Guns. Makes me sick. If these fans had had their way, Glavine and Smoltz would have been dealt the year after they arrived. Patience, Grasshopper.
July 23rd, 20128:27 pm
This team needs a LOT more than one pitcher to make the playoffs and especially to go beyond round 1. Not a god move. Dance with what brung you and restart for next year with new management and attitude.
July 23rd, 20128:29 pm
As long as Liberty Media owns this team, you are stuck with this management team. I promise you that!
trying to make p[layoffs …no time for patience…need results now
July 23rd, 20128:30 pm
Dempster or Greinke or whomever does not matter if you cant hit it out of your shadow like tonight.
Bourn strikes out WAY too much.
July 23rd, 20128:32 pm
Lets see the difference between an organization thats wants to win championships and an organization that only wants to make money:
Yankees-large payroll, wont tolerate mediocrity, always trying to improve roster, fans demand success, pull off a trade of Ichiro, quietly, with no problems.Braves-shrinking mid to (soon) lower lever payroll, happy with mediocrity (shot at the playoffs, woohoo!), keep same roster after last years record choke, fans whine but demand little so get what they deserve, team cant pull off a trade or a signing even when agreed to (Dempster, remember Furcal three years ago?)….Hahahahahahahhhaha..Thank Liberty Media my friends, and remember, this will only get worse as the 25 year media contact turner/aol saddled the organization with as a parting present to their subsidieries goes forward……..Braves will not be a championship club again in our lifetime, sorry.
July 23rd, 20128:35 pm
I fail to see the big value of Medlen as a reliever, as opposed to a starter, had he been starting at the bottom of the order all year, we would have a 3-4 more wins.
July 23rd, 20128:36 pm
Only problem with Minor and Delgado is they are pitching for the wrong team, Minor is not pitching bad tonight, in fact if he were pitching for a real baseball team he would probably be leading right now by a score of 9-2 and would breeze to a complete game.
July 23rd, 20128:38 pm
The big-money TV deals that every other club either already has, or will have, is definitely going to make it difficult to compete for free agents, or to re-sign our best players to long term deals. Another good reason to go all in now. Get a couple pitchers, and the big right handed bat we’ve been needing for so long!
I believe you hit the nail on the head buddy.
July 23rd, 20128:39 pm
True and they didn’t give up anything to get him, a couple of not so good minor league pitchers. We want to give up Delgado for a two month rental, i’m really pissed.
July 23rd, 20128:43 pm
OK folks, perhaps someone has already broken this down but in case not – here it goes. The Braves record on Mondays is 0 & 11. The most runs they have scored in any one game on Mondays is 3 (which they have done 2 times). They have scored a grand total of 17 runs on Mondays which averages out to 1.5 runs a game. Their opponents have scored 63 runs. Why in the world would anyone go to the next Monday home game?
July 23rd, 20128:47 pm
If Dunn cold walk 12 guys in a rowwe might stand a chance.
July 23rd, 20128:48 pm
What a joke these announcers are!
July 23rd, 20128:52 pm
thoght for sure Heywad had tied the game up the way Chip was calling it, the ball didn’t even get to the warning trac.
least of the east
July 23rd, 20128:55 pm
the predictable panic move before the deadline. never learn..
thanks to JJ and his brilliant start Sun. I knew that would do it.
why can’t Delgado be the 5th starter and JJ go back down ?
when you get into a bidding war, the price isn’t cheap. LA didn’t want to give up what Cubs asked for.
but the Braves are short on pitching even though they draft them early about 80% of the time.
when you make draft mistakes like they did in 2006 and 2008 at the top of the draft, it comes back to haunt you.
July 23rd, 2012
thoght for sure Heywad had tied the game up the way Chip was calling it, the ball didn’t even get to the warning trac
I thought for sure it was gone based on his reaction alone.
July 23rd, 20128:56 pm
So sad….so very sad.
Did not inherit broadcasting genes huh.
July 23rd, 20129:00 pm
whether or not the trade happens…what do the Braves do about their anemic offense.
Braves have now gone against 2 pitchers in the past four games that were 2-2 with 10.00 and 7.30 ERAs in their last 5 starts or so (Edwin Jackson and Josh Johnson) with terrible results. In fact dominated by both. If this happen just a few times that would be an anomoly. But when it happens consistently…the offense sucks.
July 23rd, 20129:01 pm
Report: Josh Johnson left game due to hand injury.
ahhhhh now I understand how we were able to get a hit off of him. He looked kinda weak there against us.
We talk baseball, other sports, music, movies, BBQ and whatever (except politics or religion)
