I don’t understand… Yankees get Ichiro in a cleanly announced trade, yet Braves have a PR mess now with is deal. Why can’t it just be cut and dry? It’s embarrassing.
So now Frank Wren has decided to mortgage the Braves future for a “going on” 36 year old pitcher.
You gave up far too much in Delgado Frank.
I’ve not been against Wren as a GM up until this point, but there’s little wisdom in giving up such a promising young starter for a two month rental.
You gave up so much for so little!
A far better move – to ensure the Braves more wins this year – would have been simply to replace Fredi as manager.
You must have thought Frank, as Ken Rosenthal alluded to earlier this season, that your job is on the line if the team doesn’t win this year.
Was the pressure on because of your past foolishness Frank?
You readily got fooled in hiring Fredi Gonzalez, who’s clearly incompetent as a major league manager – and is probably the worst tactical manager in the majors.
You got fooled in giving current NL strikeout leader Dan Uggla a 12.4 million dollar per year contract, the highest contract ever paid to a second baseman.
You got fooled with signing D. Lowe to “a high rent district” Scott Boras styled contract, which you’re eating 10 million dollars of this year.
You also got fooled with K. Kawakami, who spent his last year languishing in the minors – at 7 million a year.
So no, it won’t be for either you or the Braves, as the old Who song suggests: “WE WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN!”
For Frank, you JUST GOT FOOLED AGAIN!
This is a John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander kind of a trade in reverse!
In fact over the weekend the Washington broadcasters commented that Delgado reminded them somewhat of Pedro Martinez, while discussing Delgado’s potential.
And Theo Epstein is laughing all the way toward rebuilding the Cubs with a high quality Braves prospect – just as the Rangers once did with four high quality Braves prospects.
To think I was lauding you for showing some restraint this winter – by not trading away young prospects.
Who should you have traded to get Dempster Frank? Someone like a Todd Redmond – maybe combined with a lesser prospect.
But you already traded Redmond away to get Janish, didn’t you Frank, when you realistically could have used Pastornicky** and Wilson (who won’t be out long) for six weeks.
**(After all Frank, you thought Pastornicky was qualified enough defensively to start the season.)
Sounds like the news of the trade caught Dempster by surprise – and he’s earned the right to veto any trade. If, as Ken Rosenthal says he doesn’t want to extend to come to Atlanta, is he the right fit? Delgado for a two-three month rental?
I rather see tommy hanson be traded than delgado! Hanson is going to be a free agent soon and he is a boras client. And to top it all off he sucks!!! His fastball is the worst in the majors, i said that like 30 times already but its true! I hate watching him pitch! I just hope they trade Tommy hanson instead of delgado ..
You know what Dempster? F you. A guy that doesn’t wanna pitch for a contender is a serious red flag. Move on Wren. Would much rather have Liriano or Greinke.
Jesuschristo- my 18 month old does the “chop chant” when she sees me watching ye braves. I didn’t teach her, she just started doing it. Ohhhhh ohhhh oh oh oh.
Not all of these struggles have been at the end of the rotation. Hanson has looked mediocre to terrible on about half of his starts but gets a lot of run support — Delgado has pitched to an equivalent or better ERA an d WHIP but gets no run support. Even Hudson throws in a clunker every 3 or 4 outings.
Either he wants a guaranteed extension before he accepts the trade or there’s more to the story than we’ve been told because he’s supposed to have a really good relationship with Frank Wren and Fredi Gonzalez.
I agree with Around the Horn………….giving up a 22 year old with MLB experience is foolish. Dempster is a rental………….not worth what we were looking at spending.
Look at the era of the starters. Have we considered trading roger mcdowell? He is supposed to be developing these guys and he is not getting the job done. They need to send him so far away from Atlanta that he couldn’t find his way back with a gps.
Jim, I agree. Hanson has pitched like Millwood and dodges the criticism because of run support. McDowell needs to go. Leo, get yo mad ass back on that coaching staff.
Around the Horn may be a bit over the top, but he’s right about one thing – giving up Delgado for a 2+ month rental is far too high a price for a solid veteran pitcher currently riding his hottest streak ever.
Unless Demster is a major part in a World Series team, there’s no way this doesn’t come back to bite the Braves.
Personally, I would have preferred they make a play for Liriano. Probably cheaper, prospect wise, younger and under control for at least one more year, albeit through arbitration.
many of you were complaining about Delgado, he needs to be out. You complain about Wren “sitting on his hands” When he tries to pull off a trade without giving away the top 2 pitching prospects you complain about a kid that is not ready for the majors. I can assure you the cubs were led to believe that Dempster would approve the deal to the dodgers and the braves.
Just looking at what is available for starting pitching, I think the Braves should use a combination of Medlen, Delgado, and Minor. Medlen is by far the most polished of the three.

Maybe a rotation of Sheets, Hudson, Matt Harrison, Scott Diamond and Delgado would look pretty good right now. Wait we gave 2 of those guys away for a rental and a roster spot and seem to be giving the other one away for another rental.
Ray, just who are these top 2 pitching prospects? Viz and Beachy are out for the season and more so don’t count them. Despite what any publication might say, it seems Delgado has moved to the head of our prospect class.
Dempster is 35 and makes $14 mil per year. That’s what it will cost to resign him. Plus we gave up a 22 year old dynamic arm. Theo Epstein is laughing at us.
It sounds like the Braves and Cubs had a deal in place, but nobody had talked w/Dempster about it. Bowman broke the news of the impending trade and everyone picked up up on it and it ran around the internet/media at lightning speed. But….the clubs agreed, not the player – so….whoever leaked this will probably be looking for work soon.
Jesus, some of us are upset because we know this is fools gold. Dumpster for 3 months and too old to resign to a big deal and you lose a good young pitcher. Ask God what he thinks.
NO! Not Delgado! Not for a 35 about to be 36 yr old pitcher for 2 months who does not even want to be here. Greinke wants to play here and Braves can see if he will sign a long term contract before they make the deal. Delgado for Greinke provided Greinke will sign long term makes a lot more sense. Jurrgens and/or another prospect or two (provided they are not named Delgado norTeheran) makes more sense for a short term rental.
Gotta agree on Dempster. Delgado is too high a price to pay for a 2 month rental. At 14 mil a year and 35 plus years old, Dempster is too expensive to extend or resign.
Chipper outspoken on pitching but isn’t it funny that when Mike Minor is pitching his tail off and has a shut out (Giants game) you don’t hear Chipper calling out his offense for not giving him any run support. Ben Sheets the same thing…..He had to pitch perfect to win.
This offense hasn’t always been something to brag about………..
So MD, you think Delgado can help us win a playoff spot this year more then Dempster? And as far as Delgado being good, I think we can say right now that he is average at best.
Wren always end up with egg on his face. The guy is an idiot, and he has built the 14th worst pitching staff out of 16 teams in the N.L. He and fat fredi hand picked this pitiful starting rotation. But the scholar Fat Fredi thinks the braves will be known for their pitching at the end of the season. LOL!!
This is not a bad trade for either club, if it goes through. Delgado has a lot of potential, but do you honestly think Roger McDowell and co. will ever be able to help him realize it?
I sure as hell wouldn’t want to give away a young talent like Delgado for a (less than) 1/2 season rental and i certainly wouldn’t want to give an extension to a 35 year old pitcher with a somewhat dubious resume’.
To me this smacks more of Wren and Gonzalez trying to save their jobs by appearing to do what’s necessary to get this team into this year’s postseason without looking ahead to the future.
Another SP isn’t enough to guarantee that this team makes the postseason let alone go deep into the postseason. This team has waaaayyyyy too many holes in other areas that need to be addressed just as much as the starting pitching.
the thing that worries me about dempster is that he absolutley cannot pitch any better for the braves as he did for the cubs, and it is much more likely he will come back to his career numbers(which are decent, but not league leading era good) which means we are trading for what he’s done vs what he will do
How about trading Jurrjens for a bucket of batting practice balls. We’d come out better off. Send Hanson to anyone for a new cup for the catchers, and Uggla for some gum in the dugout. Braves would be winners in all trades.
Can someone please name a 22 year old starting pitcher that set the league on fire!! I can’t recall a single one!! This kid has the tools 2 be really good and soon than later!!!! Don’t do it Wren!!!!!!!
If Wren makes this trade, I hope he is fired the next day. But we already knew he was an idiot, Mcguirk will know after that Orr maybe he is an idiot too. I do not know him at all.
@ I TOLD U SO “Dempster is Jurrjens in a Cubs uniform. His year will turn out like Jurrjens last season” Are you kidding me? Jurrjens ERA 7.04, Dempsters ERA 2.11 , I’d say Dempster is nothing like Jurrjens.
It is amazing how fast we go from “We must do something” to “This deal is awful”. It happens everytime. I guess we could stand pat while all of the other contenders get better and sit at home for sure come playoff time. I am not talking about this trade in particular, but everyone that has been made or rumored for the last 3 years. The same people hate every proposal and have a better idea that includes giving up a player no one wants for a player everyone wants. If only it was that simple.

I guess you’re right. Worry about the future when we get there. Win one for chipper now. Dempster has that nice ERA as of right now in the present.

****IB****Maybe so, in the majority, but I think there’s at least one of the aforementioned variety. Just a feeling, don’t know for sure, of course.

I’d like to ask Fredi and McDowell why our most effective starter was throwing to a pitch-back in his backyard two months ago.

Truthfully, i would hope this falls through.

How old was lince-a-cum back when he was good? Or Stephan Strasburg. Not saying they “set the league on fire”, but their pretty good at a young age.
