Braves quotes after Monday’s loss to Marlins

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On that ump Laz Diaz said about Heyward GIDP in 9th (replays showed Heyward safe; Gonzalez was ejected)

“He just said he was out.”

On not scoring after leadoff walks in 7th and 8th

“We had some chances. We had some opportunities and they made the pitch and made the plays.”

On Minor’s performance

“Minor was terrific. That first one that Carlos [Lee] hit, he gets him out in front on a breaking pitch and he bloops it in there. And they get first and third [with none out in the first] and he got a double play and got out of the inning.”

“He was outstanding. He really was. Most of the night when you hold the opposition to two runs you’ve got a chance to come out of their with a victory, and today we just couldn’t mount any attack against [Josh Johnson].”

On Johnson’s performance

“We have a majority left-handed team — and pretty good left-handed hitters — and they’re coming back shaking their heads. With the fastball command on both sides of the plate, his slider and curveball were really nasty.”

On getting to see bullpen when Johnson left with blister after six innings

“We had some opportunities. We had the right guys matching up early on against Choate and Mujica and all those places. But we didn’t get it done. We didn’t get the bleeder, or the ball in the gap or anything when we had to.”

**MIKE MINOR

On his performance

“I felt OK. The first inning was a little rough, just because I made some pitches and they kind of snuck in for hits. And later on, [pitch to] Bonifacio [full-count leadoff homer in second inning] was right down the middle and he hit it out of the ballpark. Other than that, I just kind of mixed in all four pitches.”

Seemed like you settled in after that

“I think it was a matter of me seeing some new faces in the lineup. They hit the ball solid the first time through, then I kind of saw where they were at and made some adjustments.”

On his recent progress, less erratic

“Yeah, it feels good to give these guys a chance to win every time. That’s not going to happen [all the time], but I feel like I’ve been a lot better the last couple of starts. I feel like I owe a lot to Roger and McCann and just working together, helping me out to get through the struggles.”

**CHIPPER JONES

On the game

“Mike Minor did an outstanding job of keeping us in the ballgame. Josh Johnson was about as unhittable as I’ve ever seen him. Luckily for us he got a blister. He was dominant JJ tonight.”

“We liked our chances if we kept it at 2-nothing. Unfortunately there are a handful or two handfuls of games a year that are decided by the men in black. We didn’t get the call on a pretty obvious call at first base that really cost us a chance to get something going and put some pressure on them. But it’s not surprise to us, shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody else.”

More on Johnson

“I’ve faced JJ quite a few times. He’s always tough on us, but honestly, when Mac got the base hit I went ‘whew.’ Because he had no-hit stuff. If not perfect-game stuff. I mean, the zone was conducive to us, but Tim McClellan could have been behind the plate and we would have struggled.”

First time second. Oh well.

I was really hoping for Greinke, but it appears as though they may get Dempster. I think they will make a nice push for the playoffs with him and maybe a bench bat.

Why was Diaz standing 15 feet from the bag on that play? Shouldn’t the umps move in on an obvious potential double play call?

I agree, a bad call did not cost us the game, poor hitting, and poor play did us in — over the course of a season, calls go both ways. To win, you must score runs,,,,,

Well, heyward came before Chipper in the lineup and Chipper had the only RBI as he drove in the runner on 3rd. I guess it would have just given us an extra baserunner…no guarantees we would have capitalized with the extra out.

It seems like we just can’t quite get everything going on all cylinders. Props to Minor though tonight – looks like he did well overall. If he can continue improving his consistency and we get Dempster, I think we have a decent shot at the WC. No promses beyond that…

Augusta- Your right, it wasn’t just the ninth that cost them. But, to Chipper’s point, after his hit, it would have been 2-1, runners on 1st & 2nd (possibly 3rd), with one out. That starts to put pressure on the opposing pitcher, and who knows what happens at that point. Regardless, it was a terrible call. You could see Heyward was safe in real time.

MLB really needs to step up the professionalism of the umpires. The position of Umpire Diaz was totally incorrect. The angle was incorrect. A supervisor needs to evaluate whether his positioning was a result of laziness or a result of just not being competent. Umpire Diaz’s aggressive arguing in the face of what was at best a “close” play was also very unprofessional. Even umpires of high school games understand that people will be upset on close plays. Diaz’s “how dare you question me” stance is unacceptable in that situation. I feel sure that the other umpires on the field were embarrassed by him. To later find out that Diaz was the one that told Russell Martin that he had to earn the “right” to throw the ball back to the pitcher.

MLB cannot and should not allow umpires to dictate the outcomes of games due to unprofessionalism of umpires. Missing calls is part of the game. Not being in position to make a call is unacceptable.

Yes, the Braves had many opportunities to score runs. The correct call on the play in question puts the Braves in a good position to tie or go ahead in the game. Sure, the next two batters might have popped out, but they were only one hit away from tying the game. Sadly, we will never know what would have happened. In the current state of pennant races, one game could be huge.

MLB can and must take care of the situation with the umpires. It used to be that replays showed the umpires were correct the vast majority of the time. Sadly, such is not the case any more. And the really bad calls seem to be coming at critical times!

Instead of giving away a top pitching prospect for another old, high priced pitcher like Ryan Dempster, how about some more hitters ? Before the game Leo Mazzone said Josh Johnson isn’t the same pitcher anymore and the Braves’ offense should make hay.

Can’t really compare anyone to Texas. They have the best offense in baseball, or one of them. Offense isn’t always the problem. We’ve actually scored a lot of runs lately. JJ, when healthy, is as good as it gets IMO. He was just on tonight, and with his stuff you tip the cap and move on. We still need a SS healthy and uggla to produce but 1-6 we have a very good offense. When we lose it’s usually the starters mucho te often than hitting

Braves/Fredi are inept at tactical baseball. Refuse to bunt when given gifts of walks/refuse to PH a batter who is capable of bunting. In a game like this 2-0, 2-1 and Braves not getting anything done, it is stubbornly foolish to continue to play for the base hit. Put runners in motion, hit and run, bunt, try something! My frustration is that they lose the same way every time and with no tactical moves. Minor’s start was wasted, except that he is proving that he is a reliable starter.

Outside of the miracle comeback against the Nats, we scratch out our 4 or 5 hits a game and pray that pitching comes through. As Henry D. says, it’s the same thing every year.

He is a true professional for delivering a 5 year contract exceeding $60M for Danny boy and then getting to enjoy his cut of such a huge rip-off. I only wish I had had a shot at those idiots in the Braves front office. Good times, my friend. Does Uggla know how to just get the bat on the ball? Just push the bat out there and make some kind of contact. Maybe he should just stand there and not swing since he obviously has no clue how to work out of a slump. Make them walk him. I cannot believe that we are stuck with this guy for another four or so years. We could have had a consistent Omar Infante playing second base for us. It seems like our management is consistently giving up good players to pay a fortune for someone that goes off a cliff the year he arrives in Atlanta. The Derek Lowe scenarios are starting to be regular thing.

I hope Dempster veto’s the trade. I think we gave up on Delgado too soon. Besides everything points to Dempster going back to the Cubs as a free agent. It could be a ploy just like the Phillies could trade Cole Hamels and then sign him right back in the offseason. If you are a loyal player to your team why wouldn’t you agree to be traded for a couple of months for a good player that will only make your team better and then come back in the offseason. Now your coming back to a better team that wouldn’t have won this year anyway. In a way that’s what happened with Cliff Lee he ended up right back with Philly. I don’t like this trade unless the Braves go to the world series and that’s not much more likely with Dempster than without him. On any given short series Mike Minor and Hanson could get hot and help Hudson and Sheets surprise some teams. We wouldn’t need a fifth starter for the postseason just to finish the regular schedule and then it’s a crapshoot and the hottest team wins.

Chipper’s doing a little too much blaming lately. Blaming the umps for last night, blaming the young pitchers for inconsistencies the day before. Before blaming others, maybe he should look in the mirror. How many “ole” plays has he had since bruising his ankle? How can a lineup be consistent when the number 3, 4 or 5 hitter is “resting” every other game? How many teams can withstand their all-star future hall of famer sitting out every other game? Maybe he should also look at the run support before blaming the young pitchers. In Delgado’s case, he’s in the bottom five in the NL in run support when he’s on the mound. Lot easier to pitch when you’re staked to a little lead. Ask Hudson, he’s built his career on it. So, Chipper, until you can sum up the massive amount of will power it obviously takes to do your job for three hours a day, just shut up.

Fact-the Braves are 3rd in the NL in batting(all important runs scored). Simmons will be back in a few weeks. Hopefully Uggla will snap out of his slump and go on a tear similar to last year. You don’t just give up on a guy who is a proven ML hitter with power because he is slumping for part of a year. If you look at the Braves stats and have watched the games this year, what the Braves need is reliable SP. Frank Wren just signed Sheets who has an ERA of 0 in two starts and may be the steal of the season. By all accounts he is on the verge of trading for the NL SP leading the league in ERA. What else do some of you guys expect? The post about Heyward makes no sense. I see the naysayers have shut up about Chipper since he is batting .317.

Laz D. was out of position, to make a correct call He blew the it. Laz is a lazy, no-account umpire. It’s clear there is only one reason why he has a MLB job.
Uggla is a waste, and nothing but a complete liability to the Braves. He’s a headcase, who can’t/won’t make adjustments. He is not tradeable, due to a huge long term contract, and zero ability.
Fredi is the poorest manager in MLB. Not a baseball skill in the world. Brings nothing.
I hope that the Dempster trade does not go through.

Three games in a row, the Braves offense has mailed it in. Give-away at bats.
This is still the same collection of choke-job players, who spit out last September.
John S., in a letter to fans last October promised changes. That ws PR at best, a bold-faced lie at worst.
With John S., Franki Wren, Fredi G. still in power, the Braves remain what they are…an inconsistent collection of no-clutch, mediocre ball players, who will begin their off season as soon as game 162 is in the books.
The choke job Braves are still the Boys of September (2011).

Matt, Texas is so good partially because three ofr our future players were pis*** away for a rental first baseman. I guess we could trade Uggla to Cleveland if we pay 10 million of his salary. Our bench players are terrible and nothing is being done. At least Freddi was awake in the ninth which is a change from most games. The umpires union has the support of the players union so nothing will be done . Remember that fat Bast*** Eric Gregg had to quit before he was gone from the league. Laz Diaz rates as one of the 5 worst umpires rated by the players and he will be there 20 years from now if he wants to be. Baseball night after night is boring for base umpires. Many times particularly on check swings it is pretty obvious they are not paying attention. Its like earlier this season when Uggla did not know where the base runners were or how many outs there were.

I watch the Braves every night. We will not win until we get different management. The Braves announce they have traded for Demster. Both Demster and his manager say they know nothing about it Dempster has veto rights. This looks like we dont know what we are doing. It adversely affects the players and the fans. Poorly handled.
During the game FG was constantly outmanaged by OG. Ozzie knew he had to manufacture runs with his lineup. So he hits and runs twice, gets runners to ist and 3rd with 0-1 out, and he scores a run both times. Thats the 2 runs he got. In the 9th, we have our 2 fastest players on base with no outs. Heyward is up with a 3-1 count. If you start the runners, Heyward’s ball probably gets through and you have 1 run in, runners at 1st and 3rd and no outs, with Chipper up. What is the worst that can happen. If Heyward gets a ball, the bases are loaded. If he swings and misses, I’ll take my chances with Bourn and Prado completeing a successful double steal. The worst thing we could do is sit and do nothing, giving the Marlins the chance to turn a double play when we need two runs. I’m sorry, but I could manage this team better than FG. We need a new manager. Maybe if we keep losing, we will get one.

I posted this on the Constanza blog, but I don’t think we need to trade Degado. He is part of the future. Take Lowe’s 10 mil. and Chippers 14 mil, resign Bourne and get us a good right handed hitter either for third or left field in the off season. (Prado plays the position we don’t sign). This is about years to come. Let the chips fall where they may for the remainder of the year. Do I want to win and make the playoffs, Yes, but not for a two month rental. I think our young pitching is on the verge of being good.

“one call DID NOT cost the Braves this game,”
How does someone actually know that one bad call, did not or does not cost a team to lose?
How does someone know what would have happened if the correct call had of been made at 1st, in last night’s game?
It certainly lessened the Braves chances of stagging a rally and making a comeback, and they have proven that they are capable of making comeback wins.

Note to Chipper Jones. If the “men in black are deciding a handful or two” games a year (what’s that, a dozen to 15?) then maybe you should take those days off as well along with the ones your candy ass can’t seem to get on the field. Umpires do not decide games – players and managers do. The fact that the call was wrong is irrelevant. You as a player should never let anything but YOUR PLAY dictate an outcome. You can blame the umpires all you want; you lost because because you didn’t play well enough to win. Go cry on the bench for a few games. Pitiful.

I have supported for the most part Wren’s moves and none moves especially the restraint to trade away top tier young talent. It seems now Wren is in panic mode and now is going back to the JS days of trading away prospects for a rental. Dempster has him over a barrel now by Wren announcing trade before he had gotten Dempster to agree to sign an extension. He now will have to overpay as he did in the Lowe deal to get him. Not good negotiating by a GM. It makes him look amateurish. If he was smart he would back away from this and declare that he had a verbal deal on the table but Dempster reneged on it. He should take the criticism he will get and finally admit that the Braves are in a rebuilding mode instead of this perennial myth that they are contenders for a WC. Let Chipper finish his farewell tour. They may get to play a playoff game or two but this is not a championship team so stop pretending it is. Yes ther is talent ther but there are too many holes to fil this year and the manager is not the one to use the talent there effectively

Old Time Fan- you are right. My mistake. OG did successfully hit and run twice, but if I remember correctly, the 2nd time we got a double play. But the point is the same. We need to play more aggessively to force the other team to make mistakes, and wake up some of our hitters. Everyone plays more on their toes when the manager is making things happen by using hit and run, bunting runners in from 3rd,etc. FG manages like he is afraid to make a mistake. Last night was another winnable game that we lost. I estimate at leaast 10 such games this year. Its hard for the players to overcome this, i dont care who you trade for.

I’m with Dempster vetoing the trade. If we’re going to give up one of our young studs, then I want Greinke since we’ll have him for more than a couple of months and he is young enough that we could keep him beyond the couple of years left on his contract.

Delgado is worth more than a two month rental.

If the trade is in fact, Delgado for Dempster, I hope that Dempster does say, no thanks.
I suppose Wren’s azz has stopped aching, from being burned by the Lowe signing(it shouldn’t be, as the Braves are STILL paying for it).
Another 36 year old pitcher signed to an inflated long term multimillions contract(if they can get Dempster to agree)?
The Braves don’t need to give a young guy like Delgado away for that.

“never let anything but your play dictate an outcome”
How does a player dictate the outcome of a game, when a lazy-azz inept umpire, is stealing outs from his team?
Umpires do decide the outcome of games, many times.
Wrong calls are often relevent to the outcome of some games.

Err…nevermind. Greinke’s a FA at the end of the season too. Maybe we could make a trade with the Twins for Willingham and Liriano.

Reckingball – I am coming around to your line of thinking. It is not worth trading a prospect like Delgado for a short-term rental in Dempster. The Braves’ limited payroll dictates that they cannot make such a move and expect to compete in the future. I also don’t believe that Dempster will be the stopper and that his pitching will probably return to his career norm or slightly worse.

There seems to be too many issues in the Braves’ starting rotation for an aging vet like Dempster to fix in just two months. Hanson appears vulnerable. Jurrjens is returning to his earlier pathetic ways. Minor is not quite there. Hudson has some injury issues. Sheets may break down, and we cannot expect him to throw shut outs at the very least. I don’t see a World Series winner this year either with or without Dempster. Thus, stay with the youth and hope for the best in the future.

Losing another 2-1 game tells me we need offense more than more pitching. I mean JJ is done, so just replace him with Dalgado and go out and get somebody who can hit! But his management team will make another bad move, I am confident of that!

I think I like Delgado more than Dempster.

The lineup may look better in the stats this year, but from game to game you never know if they are going to all strike out or score a few runs.

Same deal with the starting pitching. When they coincide… the Braves win, when they don’t, it looks like they don’t know how to play baseball.

reckingball, my point is that like players, umpires will make mistakes. You lessen the chances of those incidents happening by playing better baseball. I would rather have heard Jones say something like “Yeah, we feel like he missed that call. But we should have put ourselves in a position where that play didn’t matter. And if I hadn’t struck out twice and had better at bats, that call wouldn’t even be worth discussing”. At least if he had that mindset, I would respect him. Take some personal accountability instead of blaming your failures on someone else.

If the imbecile at first gets his fat, lazy ass in position and then manages to get the simple call correct, then we might have very well sent that game to extras or have won it right there.

Haven’t seen Mejia play, but I do see he is 6′5″ tall and 245 pounds I wonder if he can be trained to play the outfield. Bad call for sure, but game was not lost by that call. No offense for 8 innings was the reason. Minor pitched very well so hopefully his confidence will continue to grow because a lefty is needed in the rotation.
To say Uggla is struggling is under statement. What to do with him? I guess just hope and pray he gets on a roll like he did last year, but can you keep a player who you are always hoping and praying will start to hit. Problem is Wren signed him to a big contract so no one will touch him.

Mike from the coast – I haven’t seen Mejia play either, but I did check his numbers. Those 7 SBs come at the price of getting caught four times, which is consistent over his minor league career. He has shown good power in the minors, but his plate discipline is awful (more than 3.5 Ks for every walk) and he has been old for every level at which he’s played. Haven’t seen anything on his defense, but Carlos Lee is also still listed at 245lbs in many places and he’s closer to 345 than 245.

Pitching is suppose to win games, or so I have heard.
Johnson was at the top of his form last night, or appeared to be, to me.
When a team is going up against opposing pitching, as good as the Fish were dealing it last night, every out counts.
They might have put their self in that position last night due to their lack of production at the plate.
But, it is hard for a team to correct that lack of run production, if a crummy, egotistical umpire is taking away their chances to win.
That is my point, and opin.

Before the Marlins sent Omar Infante to Detroit, wonder whether they would have considered reversing the trade of Dan Uggla for Infante and Mike Dunn? I bet the Braves would, since they could move Martin Prado back to second base, where he was an All-Star starter, and play Infante in left field and even shortstop until Andrelton Simmons returns.

TPic. Yeah may not even be close to realistic. I saw he had been caught 4 times, but 7 successful isn’t too bad. If he can hit 280 with power though he is an alternative, if they can find someplace to play him. I saw he had 95 strikeouts as well. He does hit over .300 at the moment. Again we need a right handed power hitter, The only one we supposedly have isn’t doing to well at the moment.

The Braves have had plenty of bad calls go against them this year.
The Braves have had some bad calls go in their favor.
I think they have had more go against them, than in their favor.
For instance(in games that I have watched), Bourne has been called out at 2nd ‘five’ times, when the replays show he was safe, and some of those plays were not even close.
But there is not a lot of complaining from the fans most of the time, and when there is, it is limited.
My biggest complaint about last nights bad call, was the ump’s incompetence in setting himself up in the correct position, to be able to make a correct call.

Fredi sucks as always what else is new. I don’t think he knows anything about small ball. We have trouble scoring runs so when you have a runner on first with not outs put in the bunt that is so obvious of a play. This team is like up and down you never know which one has come to play. No consistency what so ever. Too bad we couldn’t get Infanti since he was up for grabs. We need offense so so bad. Minor pitched well enough to get a win. It is so tough on our pitching staff to stand out there and try to keep the other team from scoring when they don’t get any run support from their own team. Come on you guys get your heads out of your *&%$ and get to hitting.

It is tough to win ballgames when you only have 6 batters and 6 innings to score runs. The Braves are effectively giving up 3 free innings to the opposition each night with 3 automatic outs at the bottom of the lineup. Couple that with the starting pitching putting you in a hole right in the early stages of most games, and you do not have a formula that translates to being a championship caliber ballclub.

Dan Uggly is the Braves’ Adam Dunn. Massively overpaid and a .223 hitter with a few dingers and massive strikeout totals. No one will take his contract just as the White Sox cannot find anyone stupid enough to take the Dunn contract. The leadership of this team from the top to the manager are unfit for their positions. I have been a baseball fan for over 60 years. I have watched the Braves since day one in Atlanta. I have watched through the sorry years. But, this overpaid, over hyped bunch is beyond pale. These people sign worthless players to massive contracts. The list is long and ugly. I do not watch them on TV any more. I refuse to come to their games. I have been traded. I got myself traded, just like Ichiro did. I am now a Texas Rangers fan and will root for Nolan Ryan, one of my all time favorites, until the Atlanta Braves fire everyone from ownership down to Fat Freddie. Until they are committed to winning, I am finished with them. Go Rangers!

Doubtful Dempster comes to Atlanta. Comes from W Canada, rumor has it that he would prefer to go to LA. If the Braves have to give up Delgado, Minor and Teheran………..It’s not worth it.

Notice how no one wants to trade for Hansen……That “funky” delivery will soon lead to major arm problems.
