Series preview: Braves at Marlins

When (TV): 7:10 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, 12:40 p.m. Wednesday (SPSO).

Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5

Probable starting pitchers:

Monday: Braves LH Mike Minor (5-6, 5.69 ERA) vs. RH Josh Johnson (5-7, 4.35)

Tuesday: Braves RH Tim Hudson (8-4, 3.70) vs. LH Mark Buehrle (9-9, 3.29)

Wednesday: Braves RH Tommy Hanson (10-5, 4.50) vs. RH Ricky Nolasco (8-8, 4.55)

About the Braves:

Batting: Dan Uggla went 4-for-5 with two homers with two homers and five RBIs in a June 5 game at Miami. In 38 games since then, the ex-Marlins 2B is 15-for-124 (.121) with two homers, nine RBIs and 51 strikeouts…. Brian McCann is 14-for-43 (.326) with seven homers and 16 RBIs in his past 12 games…. Chipper Jones is 19-for-47 (.404) with four doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs in his past 13 games…. Martin Prado has a .326 average and 32 RBIs in 63 games against the Marlins, including .409 (9-for-22) with five extra-base hits in five this season.

Pitching: Minor is 3-2 with a 3.82 ERA and .208 opponents’ average in his past seven starts, including 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA and .146 OA in two July starts. But he’s 1-3- with a 7.84 ERA in his past six road starts, and lasted fewer than six innings in five of them. Minor is 1-1 with a 6.48 ERA in five starts against the Marlins, including a June 7 win at Miami when he allowed four hits, one run and five walks in five innings…. Against the Marlins, Hudson is 12-4 with a 2.76 ERA in 23 starts, and Hanson is 5-2 with a 2.96 ERA in nine starts.

Miscellaneous: The Braves are 15-5 with a 2.24 ERA in their past 20 games against the Marlins, including a three-game sweep June 5-7 in their first visit to new Marlins Park… Jones has a .300 average, 40 homers and a .901 OPS in 237 career games against the Marlins. He was hurt when the Braves played at the retractable dome stadium in June. It’ll be the 46th major league ballpark he’s played in…. McCann is 11-for-40 (.275) with a home run against Johnson, the only current Brave with a homer off him. Jones is 9-for-32 (.281) with eight walks against him.

About the Marlins:

Batting: Marlins newcomer Carlos Lee, the longtime Astros LF/1B, has a .320 career average and .395 OBP in 45 games against the Braves, though only two homers in 169 at-bats…. The Braves won’t have to face slugger Giancarlo Stanton, who’s on the 15-day DL recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery, and might also miss Hanley Ramirez, who’s been sidelined by a hand infection and is questionable for the series…. Against Minor, Jose Reyes is 4-for-10 with a homer and Logan Morrison is 3-for-7 with a homer.

Pitching: Johnson is 0-2 with a 7.56 ERA and .314 opponents’ average in his past three starts, after going 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA and .234 OA in his previous 10 starts. He’s a modest 5-4 in 17 games (16 starts) against the Braves despite an outstanding 2.29 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 102 innings. Johnson lost his only start against Atlanta this season, allowing six hits and two runs in 7-2/3 innings on June 6 at Miami…. Against the Braves, Buehrle is 3-1 with a 3.81 ERA in four starts, and Nolasco is 5-8 with a 4.94 ERA in 21 games (20 starts).

Miscellaneous: The Marlins have lost nine of their past 12 games and hit just .240 with 30 runs in that period, including three or fewer runs in eight of their past 10 games. They totaled four runs in three games and were swept at Pittsburgh over the weekend. They had five hits (all singles) while being shut out 3-0 on Sunday….. Minor will avoid facing Stanton, who is 2-for-6 with two homers off the left-hander, and might also avoid Ramirez, who is 2-for-5 with a homer against him.

Cue the “Uggla has had past success against the Marlins and this is the series that should get him going” rhetoric from Fredi.

I smell a sweep. At worst we’ll win 2. Next 23 games are against teams at or below .500. Time to move ahead of the Nats and make them chase us. Get it done Braves!

15 of 21 pitches were strikes, J-Hey 2 more hits and nice assist ,,he’s raising his performance, Prado another multi-hit game,,

Uggla is gone. He is never coming back. We have to do some damage over the next month with the easier schedule. Oh and hopefully Jair is gone too.

if you check the series recap you can see Washington won the game only because they faced Jurrjens, with Hudson in the hill sure the game could be was a very close matchup with a lot of chance of won , about the DH yesterday ,, they won the game only because the braves sent 2 awful relievers to pitch,,with our best arms the 2 game of DH could be gone to extra innings and a lot of chance of won the game,,,about Sheets game well no too much for say,,nice game by Ben and clutch homer by CJ10 ,,of course we cant forget the nice relief by Medlen and Durbin

About the opener well no good pitching by neither,,the braves won the game because they had best performance by the bullpen allowing only 2 runs in 7 IP and Wash 7 runs in 5 IP,,,,,,

a possible 3-1 series ,hardly a sweep ,, but 2-2 it’s better than be sweep people,,still in the hunt

Hanson & Jurgens have been bombarded in their most recents starts and they’re probably considered #2 & #3 on the staff. How can Wren not be contemplating an immediate trade? Surely Sheets can’t keep up the shutout performances, though I wish he could. Right now, Minor & Delgado deserve to be in the rotation. Hanson is questionable with one more bad start, and the Braves ought to really surprise Scott Boras and outright release his client because he cannot possibly bring anything in a trade. As the staff stands today, the Braves 3rd best starter candidate is stuck in the bullpen, Kris Medlen. Sheets and Hudson are #1 & #2. Hardly a starting staff to strike fear in the opponents clubhouse. It’s time to make the move Frank, the weekend should have shown you that.

Fans if you see the 2 game of DH was a fault by Fredi Gonzalez ,,why??

well i have some points ab yourout:

1.- If you know your tomorrow game starter is Jurrjens and he’s comming from a bad start ,,why you rest your best bullpen arms if you know it’s 99.9 % sure you dont gonna need they in JJ game..
2.- Knowing that use they after Delgado was removed and keep the game tie with the chance of win in extra innings
3.- Then with the 3rd game of series in your pocket rest the bullpén in the JJ GAME!!!
4.- You dont need to be a scientific for predict other awful game by JJ

Sounds like a good opportunity to gain some ground on Washington. Those last two games were pretty demoralizing after such an incredible start to this weekend’s series.

Thank you Braves. We needed some batting practice and JJ was the best batting practice pitcher we have ever had. It helps to have an opportunity to work on our swings and ‘get the kinks out’ without having to deal with the pressure of facing a major league quality pitcher.

As a Marlins fan I can tell you guys…Uggla is streaky, but when he’s hot you’ll win…Your dugout is looking good. Where there used to be Chipper’s clique and everyone else it’s starting to look more like a team….except for that bump on a log, Miami Lakes Fredi. Every manager in baseball has a bench coach-right hand man…except Fredi.

The pitchers w/Swag & goafter the hitters are Hudson, Sheets, & Medlen(when if Mgmt. sees the obvious, black & white) to start. Get the Hurlers who go after hitters & not needle around.

Medlen was a better minor league starter than Hanson. Look it up. He would be, after a game or so to get re-acclimated, a good starter again. Hanson is now, and has always been, inconsistent. He’s big, tall and looks the part of a starter, but he has yet to find his consistent ‘groove’. Medlen is
Iike a pitching version of Prado…..just put him in and he produces, starter, reliever, wherever, just like Martin at second, first, short, left…
Without consistent starting pitching, the playoffs are a dream. With the Big Three, Bobby won the division every year….without them, he didn’t. Fredi won’t win it, either, without pitching.

And while I’m here, DOB, Carroll, Chris, anyone please tell me how JJ goes from three years of
success, capped off by a first half last year of excellence, to looking lost. Is it still the knee? Something else?
And since Constanza is up, can we stick him in left and use Prado at second and let Uggs regroup?
