Washington – Reliever Jonny Venters pitched a perfect inning for Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday night in the first of what’s expected to be a two-game outing in a minor league rehabilitation assignment. Venters threw six pitches, five for strikes, while coaxing two fly-outs and a groundout. If all goes well Sunday, Venters is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday or Wednesday in Miami.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he plans to start Chipper Jones at third base and catcher David Ross in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Nationals’ left-hander John Lannan. Unless Jones convinces him otherwise, Gonzalez plans to play Juan Francisco at third base and Brian McCann at catcher in the first game against right-hander Edwin Jackson.
Peter Moylan, who pitched three innings in three games for Single-A Rome, will continue his comeback from shoulder surgery in Double-A Mississippi starting Tuesday. Moylan gave up one run on one hit, one walk and a hit batter on Thursday night for Rome but said via twitter “had more life on my pitches last night. The (hit batter) and a walk are frustrating, but this is still my spring training. Ironing out the kinks.”
