raleighbravefan, what makes me feel better is just knowing you feel better. Anything that helps your confidence out, wouldn’t want you to know that you don’t know anything. Opps.. don’t read that last part.
tmc Melky has talked about that a little. He loosened his grip on the bat, in fact he has a finger just kind of hanging out instead of gripping. He got in better shape and his legs/core are super strong. He is seeing the ball better, and is not pressing. Coming out of Spring, he had success early, had good friends on the team, and knew he was the starting LF for the Bruce Bochy. He had confidence and the organization behind him, and he was very thankful and happy. He then absolutely took off, soaring to the leaderboards in AVG & HITS. Also, his defensive play sparkled. Also, hios baserunning and knack for the extra base and scoring runs sizzled. The guy is legit. But hey, you all say he sucks and has a terrible atitude and needs to learn class and be taught a lesson. *sigh* Here comes Kimbrel.. sweet lord this guy is a handfull. Nasty!
I guess I should not be amazed that some of you care more about hitting someone than about actually winning a game. What if Huddy hit him in the first inning and got tossed? Then what? Winning games are way more important than sending some stupid message. Saying what? Everyone knows Melky’s an a**, he continues to look like one, no matter if the Braves hit him or not. Let him act like that- I;d rather see the Braves win.
“crotch-chop gesture that Cabrera has made a couple of times here, including after Blanco’s homer – the two of them have done that all season, I’m told”
yeah, sure sounds like an all around classy organization (yes SF, what your players do, reflects on your organization …..)
Well, Cabrera is making $6M this year so the Giants are getting a huge bargain. 130 hits, 43 multi-hit games and very good defense. Of course he’s a Free Agent, how much of this is him making sure he is at his best for negotiating? Lost the weight, worked on his game, figure SF will be paying him a ton of money for years to come. Good for him.
In a REAL baseball town like St. Louis or Chicago the pitchers would have put Melky on the deck several times. Not in this town, ATL shows Cabrera perfect Southern hospitality.
I agree with many of you, irrespective of the score they need to PLUNK that punk in the obliques!!!
Stuck at work so I haven’t been able to watch the game and see any of Melky’s supposed antics. But, damm, Braves fans. You all sound more concerned about hurting Melky than avoiding a sweep. Why in the world would you want to hit him and get a potential run on base? Priorities!
97 mph cheese on the corner. Silly. That is not hittable. By the way Nate Scheirholtz came out this morning and says he wants to be traded. He has a chip on his shoulder..
“yeah, sure sounds like an all around classy organization (yes SF, what your players do, reflects on your organization …..)” — OMG. Short memory? Remember in 2010 when our entire team saluted your team and your manager in your park???!? C’mon!

Congratulations on the W you guys, big win. Good luck against Washington, watch out for R. Zimmerman and B. Harper! And watch out for that bullpen. Good luck!
Seriously, DOB, and I figure you’re getting peppered with this now, but how much longer can Fredi keep Struggla in the lineup at all? — StingerSplash
No, not really getting “peppered” with it anymore, because I think most people have seen the quotes and noticed that I’ve asked about it after just about every one of the last 3-4 games I’ve covered.
Braves got LUCKY to salvage one and your pitchers didn’t have the *guts* to even attempt to plunk Cabrera, oh well we’ll gladly take 2 out of 2 and go on our merrily way.
Melky is in your head, and your pitchers won’t even seek revenge!!!
I don’t care if it cost us a game or if someone gets tossed. You don’t let a punk like Melky come into your park and pull that crap without a response. Bend over Braves.
Colby – SF is a class organization. Cabrera shows no class or respect for opposing players. I get that he’s upset with the fans – to be expected with the reception he’s received, but…to get juvenile with them? Faking a couple of throws to the fans in LF then smirking on his run back to the dugout after the third out? The “suck it” motions? C’mon…very good player – very little class.
Everyone who is saying to plunk Melky is not thinking about the next series. I’m sure a plunking is coming but in SF. There was a good chance that Hudson would have been thrown out if he hit Melky in the first at bat. By doing so the bullpen would have been maxed for the Washington series that includes a doubleheader.
ColbyinCalifornia – thanks, good to know. Did you read or hear this in atlanta? or was this from the bay area? i’d like to know.
I never thought MC was a bad player. He did not perform well here, but wasn’t around very long. Then i see Chipper make a comment about his actions this weekend as “that’s Melky’ and makes me wonder why he is being so outward against the Braves or fans…
That puzzy Blanco knew he couldn’t touch KKKKimbrel swinging normally so he tries to bunt with the game on the line. What a joke. I only wish Cabrera came to bat in the 9th so Craig could make him look silly.
but i guarantee you as soon as he signs that big contract….that fat ass will put all that weight right back on…..i feel sorry for the team that signs him long term….for multiple reasons
2 out of 3, yay! Apart from that chop thing you do I’ve always had a spot in my lil baseball heart for you guys since back in the Glavine/Avery days. Peace out, Braves fans, see you in August!
WIN! Awwwright. Good job, Kimbrell AWESOME. We can butt-plunk Blanco and Melky one day when both teams are out of the race. Took care of business. The Main thing.
apparently our spineless manager is fine with being Melky’s b@#$%…and one win out of three is a losing record to all you scoffers, so revenge on Melky actually might have been more important in this particular instance…
That’s fine Shaun, but your knowledge far and above outshines mine, again far and above, not even close. Just because some of us don’t have the knowledge you have doesn’t mean you get to talk down to us. You can say the same exact things you say in a positive way or even in a teaching way, but not demeaning.
I really enjoy what you have to say at times, then I feel like I get run down because I don’t know as much as you. If you want to teach us, then by all means do so. But act like a teacher, not a know-it-all.
Many saying wait until the next series. By then it will all be forgotten. That is what usually happens. The Braves are normally “wimps” when it comes to acts like this, and the pitchers don’t have the “guts” to show there has to be some mutual respect. Bochy should be held just as responsible as MC for his classless antics. Those of you accepting this don’t have a clue. Atlanta is one of the few places where this would be condoned. Why do you think ATL gets no respect in any major sports and is known all over as “Losersville?” BTW DOB, your column today about this was a complete waste of space.
Braves win the game, are still losers in my book. Melky came to town and basically peed all over The Ted, with no retribution. Weak. Freddie should be disgusted.
Did you read that scoots? Basically Payne stated that a reasonable expectation for Heyward is a sub-.400 slugging. Occasionally he’ll slug over .400, and some times well below his sub-.400 reasonable expectation, but generally speaking, it’s reasonable to expect a sub-.400 slugging percentage out of Heyward.
Who are the Braves going to put at second if they bench Uggla? They going to go with Pastornicky? Prado at second and Hinske/Diaz in left?
I’m not a big fan of going on small sample sizes, especially when the alternatives are clearly lesser players. And, yes, a month or so is a small sample.
We can’t afford to lose a pitcher to pluck Milkman…..
You bring in Varvaro, hit that Cabrera loser anywhere from the waist up with the hardest stuff Varvaro can throw. The kid gets thrown out and you bring someone who has a higher chance of “getting outs”…
I don’t think Kimbrel threw a ball to the 3 batters in the ninth.
Mets blasted Gio Gonzalez and look like they will post a win, so we will head into Washington only 3.5 games out of first. Plus, we will not face Gio. GO BRAVES!
AT – Thanks, my friend. I consider the fact that YOU think I don’t know anything to be a HUGE (as Donald Trump would say) compliment.
Spew on if it makes you feel better.
By the time we go to San Fran, Melky’s classless antics and taunting will all be forgotten, plus Freddie and our pitchers don’t have the guts to try to hit him anyway.
Cowards of the County is the new theme song of the 2012 ATL Braves.
Concerning FG keeping Uggla in the lineup, me thinks the two of them are “blood brothers”. Something gotta be going on there. If it was anybody else he would sit him, or send him to Gwinnett.
Some folks seem to feel that “revenge” is more important than winning a baseball game and are still complaining that Huddy didn’t hit Melky because Melky is an a** (which everyone knows). Because hitting him and putting him on base in front of Buster Posey in a low scoring game is better than NOT hitting him and giving him a free pass in front of Buster Posey in a low scoring game. Also, that the potential of losing Huddy for hitting Melky is an acceptable risk given the state of our long relievers and the fact that we have a double header in Washington in 2 days.
Melky’s a d!ck but everybody and their momma figured if there was retaliation it would be today. I’m cool with them waiting it out until next month and if there isn’t, it’s all good. Maybe it’ll irritate Melky knowing he didn’t get under the Braves skin.
All those calling Braves and Fredi gutless….Who gets the last laugh if, in a close game, we put Melky on base, and he ends up scoring the winning run…in a game that we really need to win? Does that make any sense to anyone?
TennesseePaul, Heyward is slugging .482 over 350 PA this season, while playing outstanding defense.
Uggla is on-basing.351 and slugging .384 this season.
Prado is on-basing .369 and slugging .441 this season while playing very good defense.
All that means a hell of a lot more than what they’ve done in a recent smaller sample that someone arbitrarily picks out. If people are going to get worked up over small samples subject to the randomness of the game instead of paying more attention to who players fundamentally are, baseball might not be the sport for you.
So you’d hit Melky in the 8th inning of a 2 run game, again, with Posey on deck as the tying run? All to show what? You think hitting him will suddenly make Melky realize that he’s an a** and STOP?
Everyone freaking out about Melky not being plunked, just keep in mind what usually happens when the Braves walk someone. They score the first of that inning’s 6 or 7 runs.
Better to keep him off the basepaths and just move on. They’ll have their chance to get him, and I guarantee the team won’t forget about how he acted. Might not even be this season, but Melky will get his eventually.
Right now the team just needs to worry about winning games. 3 out of 4 against Washington will go a long ways. 2 out of 2 would be acceptable. Anything less and people around here will be jumping from the CNN Center.
iTiSi – that was not me. Someone stole my screen name. I’m not a hater, so it’s pretty easy to see that wasn’t me. I’m out of here – talk again soon and good luck in DC! Here’s hoping Dan can start squaring up balls and Freddie stays hot! Watch out for the back end of Washington’s bullpen, they are tough. Get to their pitchers early!
Failure to hit Melky reminds me of this story involving Pendleton who shared similar disgust when Freeman refused to hit a batter, just like today:
Atlanta third baseman TERRY PENDLETON was disciplined by the Braves, but not suspended, for walking off the field during Wednesday night’s game with the Reds in Cincinnati.
Pendleton surprised his teammates by leaving the field in the seventh inning with reliever MARVIN FREEMAN pitching to Reds starter TIM BELCHER. Pendleton, who was followed down a dugout runway by Manager BOBBY COX, was replaced by BILL PECOTA.
The third baseman evidently was upset that Freeman didn’t throw at one of the Reds in retaliation for Belcher having hit DEION SANDERS in the lower back in the top of the seventh.
expecting the staff ace to plunk someone is unrealistic, too much at risk there, but Varvaro? Tell me he wouldn’t be expendable. I didn’t expect anything to happen, and yes, I would “plunk” him in a close game to wake up what has largely been a vanilla ball club most of the last 2 seasons, but that ain’t good ol’ havana fats’ style now is it? Oh and one more thing: Shaun, regardless of how much baseball you claim to know, Dan Uggla sucks DDD and will, without a doubt go down as one of the worst signings in history…oh yeah, he does “hustle” though…
AT – Of course, you are right…just like you always are. Thanks for schooling me. I now understand that the Braves would be foolish to have any long term contract, and that another team will just leap at the opportunity to take Uggla off our hands, and provide us with some valuable prospects in return…because of course, he’s a poor match for us, meaning he’s not worth what we’re paying him…but he would be worth that to many other teams.
Got it. I will never question your wisdom again…especially since it seems to upset you so much.

By the time we go to San Fran, Melky’s classless antics and taunting will all be forgotten, plus Freddie and our pitchers don’t have the guts to try to hit him anyway.

Concerning FG keeping Uggla in the lineup, me thinks the two of them are “blood brothers”. Something gotta be going on there. If it was anybody else he would sit him, or send him to Gwinnett.

The good news is that we have our ready-made excuse for losing 2-3 in washington, if not all 3….
The bats have gone silent again just as quickly as they heated up.
We are so wildly inconsistent offensively. Glad we won today in spite of it thanks to excellent pitching!
