I can handle a bad week or 2. It’s the month long slugging under .400 which you like and I dislike. I still like Heyward, but not his sub-400 slugging, which he did in May and is now doing in July.
I’m pretty sure you could name any player in major league baseball and if I look hard enough I could find a sub-.400 slugging month for any of them in the past 2 years. The key to having those months occur few and far between, and being WAY over .400 in the other month.
“RC” Didja ever hear of a “safety squeeze”? The odds were much better for Janish on a bunt attempt than trying to get a hit, as we ALL saw what happened. That was so predictable. If he cannot bunt he has no business being the the major leagues. Pitchers get by with it just because they are pitchers.
The art of bunting is becoming more and more extinct, and that is sad. Many a run has been manufactured by just a simple bunt in years gone by. Lots of already gone managers are turning over in their graves.
Prado is in the process of regressing to more typical utility man numbers that one should expect from him….makes him cheaper and makes Uggla feel better watching him flounder around.
Hey! What’s a Braves game, without Worthless Dan taking another called third strike, and another 0′fer for the day? Worthless Dan Uggla, you are who you are!
Posey caught it on the corner – it was a breaking ball that came from the LH batters box – no way it touched the plate – I wish they’d run the FoxTrax on it.

I have heard of a safety squeeze. I still say that when the opposing team knows that they have to get the runner at the plate or the game is over, a safety squeeze isn’t very likely to work. The 1st and 3rd basemen are going to break as soon as they see bunt, and they were already playing crazy shallow due to the aforementioned runner at 3rd. While I agree that Janish looked lost at the plate and had no business hitting, I think that removing him for Hinske would have been the right move, especially with Pastornicky available to cover extra innings if needed.
Wow…I’ve never seen anyone struggle at the plate as much as Uggla has. How can a guy just “forget how to hit” the way he has? Also, I thought it was funny how when he struck out, Chip says ” no argument from Uggla” as Uggla turns to argue the call.

Why? Was some of the postgame spread put out there?
Seriously, DOB, and I figure you’re getting peppered with this now, but how much longer can Fredi keep Struggla in the lineup at all? Yeah, yeah, let him try to hit his way out of his slump, he did last year, yada yada yada. But there really is no end in sight now. And this is Uggly what’s happening at the plate. With Struggla, the light-hitting Janish and the pitcher’s spot, the lineup is only six spots deep right now. As uneven as the starting pitching has been, as crapshoot as the set up guys in the pen have been, how can Struggla keep his place in the lineup? It might be time for an “injury” to pop up with him.
AT, not yet, but he did beat the ever-loving-sh!t out of Melky. Can’t believe you missed that. He had him in a Ryan Express style headlock, just wailing on him…
Just as I thought…Braves have now faced more lefty SPs than any other team in MLB except the Dodgers, whom they are tied with at 34 games apiece. Braves are 14-19 so far. Further proof they really need to add a RH masher in the offseason.
a) many of those guys who posted lower ERA’s pitched over their heads in 2011.
b) Defense is not the only outside factor (other than a pitcher’s performance) that influences ERA and WHIP. Some of it is randomness as well (some might call that luck, chance, whatever).
c) Greinke had the highest rate of giving up groundballs on the Brewers’ starting staff in 2011. The Brewers had one of the worst defensive infields in the majors, attributing to most of their defensive deficiencies.
d) 2011 is just one season.
I think it’s clear, based on the information we have, that he’s in that second tier of great starters, behind guys like Verlander, Halladay, Cliff Lee. Even if we are pretty conservative, we would say he’s one of the top 12 pitchers in the game since the start of 2009 and top 15-20 since the start of 2010 (if you don’t feel comfortable including his remarkable 2009). On the free agent market, $20M a season is reasonable for that kind of pitcher. The bigger question for me is what would the Braves have to give up to get him in a trade this season. And does some team that has a larger budget offer something like $23M-a-year or more? And, if so, would he take less than that to play in a place like Atlanta? Lots of questions and valid reasons to have misgivings about trading for him. But I don’t think there is much doubt that $20M a season is fair, considering what a player of his caliber has been worth on the free agent market in recent seasons.
besides scoots, I acknowledge that this month is not over, I hope he gets it going soon. He could bounce back up there. But, ignoring this month, he has slugged under .400 in 6 of the last 9 months he has played ball, that still isn’t desirable from a RF.
Melky showing real class there slowing from his trot to a walk across the plate scoring on the sac fly. What a clown. He’s having a great year and reacting badly to the booing from fans in the stands, but…retribution HAS to be coming soon from the Braves. I’m surprised he didn’t at least get brushed back today – and he hopefully won’t bat again today.
I had already lost all respect for the manager of the Braves, now I have lost all respect for Hudson and the other Braves. They are letting Melky C. just “mop the floor” with them and then rub it in. He could have accomplished two things right there. Send a message to Cabrera that his actions are not acceptable in your own home park, and only given up one base INSTEAD OF A “FRIGGIN” TRIPLE! Not too many places where this would happen in baseball. Of course, we all know why it happens in Atlanta.
Melky is showing a complete lack of class. The Giants should be embarrassed by him as should any professional baseball player. The only thing professional about Melky is his paycheck

Totally. Because starting a fight is WAY more important than winning a game. And hitting him there, in a 2 run game with Buster Posey on deck, is a wonderful idea…
Colby – did you see him? He actually walked and paused before stepping on the plate and then took two steps towards the Braves Dugout. Classless individual.
Does anyone just realize who individual players are as players and realize there is randomness throughout the baseball season that is going to cause performances to fluctuate from small sample to small sample throughout the season?
Let’s try this, for all you visual folks: If you are trying to graph a player’s performance, you would draw a straight line to indicate a player’s talent level. Then you have a wavy line around that straight line, going up and down from that straight line, that indicates the player’s performance. That’s how baseball works, FYI.
“BM” No, what is really “sad” is that somebody like you sits and waits for something to try to correct on someone’s post. That is the second time this week. You must be an ex-English professor who lost his liberal-spouting post at some little known college. BTW, did I not word it properly for your acceptance sir? There’s lots worse on here, yet you seem to “zero” in on certain ones.
Would like to see LARD come to bat in the 9th against Kimbrel and a nice 100 mph ball to the ribs. Needs to take a marker with him to the mound and send his regards on the ball. Just remember to throw hard enough to leave the imprint.
I did see it. I didn’t see the 2 steps towards the Braves dugout. That looked like a guy crossing the plate. ?? You guys really, really, really hate him. Wow.
We would rather whine about getting our butts kicked than to kick back….as much as I heard from all over about the need to knock Melky down today, why the hell didn’t we do it?
since Melky Cabrerra is all over the map here in the ATL, i thought i might see an article interviewing Melky on his resurgence at the plate. What is different about SF vs. ATL and maybe some insight on why he struggled badly here and doing well there (and Gregor Blanco for that matter too).
But i guess that’s asking a little much from our esteemed paper?
Melky is just a small sample of so many players that don’t respect the Braves as an organization.
Why?
Because the Braves never retaliate. They never MAKE other teams respect them.
Cabrera should have been hit in the ribs last night and maybe even today again, just to set an example out of him… send a message.
This team tends to take so much crap from flashy losers like Cabrera, Ruiz, Rollins, Phillips, just to name a few… and never gets back at them, they just roll over and lose.
Colby…
I’m happy for the guy in that he’s obviously improved his game. Just don’t rub it in the face of your former team, and the fans.. I mean, really, what does that accomplish?
I’d love to see Kimbrell plunk Melky….except the game is too close, and I don’t want to put him on base. We can always get revenge later, when he least expects it.
Save the Melky plunk til later in the summer for the last game when we are in their house. Make it the last game of the series and take the lumps then.
“brian” if that happened the last thing we would see in the dugout would be Fredi G’s rear end headed to the clubhouse. Really can’t wait to see a brawl IF it ever happens to see just how FG does handle it.
I have a feeling he is the reason nothing has happened with MC today. He probably said, “no, no, just leave him alone. He is a decent guy at heart. Maybe we are just misunderstanding him. He has good intentions. We have to be more sensitive to our fellow man.”
Shaun – You post great stats that are telling and convincing and your knowledge about the game is incredible, but wow man, sometimes you can really be a jerk.
i’ve never seen a team have so many players go into major slumps as the Braves.
I know it happens in baseball, but player after player. Good players, average players, role players go completely in the toilet for long stretches at a time. Year after year.
A players perspective no longer in atlanta might be insightful on why this is becoming common here?
Well, Cabrera is making $6M this year so the Giants are getting a huge bargain. 130 hits, 43 multi-hit games and very good defense. Of course he’s a Free Agent, how much of this is him making sure he is at his best for negotiating? Lost the weight, worked on his game, figure SF will be paying him a ton of money for years to come. Good for him.

Fantastic job, Braves.

I’m happy for the guy in that he’s obviously improved his game. Just don’t rub it in the face of your former team, and the fans.. I mean, really, what does that accomplish?

It seems that many of the Giants players are supporting Melky in his foolishness. Does not reflect well on that franchise or its manager.

Would like to see LARD come to bat in the 9th against Kimbrel and a nice 100 mph ball to the ribs.
Since the Braves would probably be down by four runs for Melkster to make it back up, I believe I’d prefer they want until next time to plunk him.

Seriously, why has Melky NOT been plunked in the ribs yet? Are the Braves really that soft?
Really disgusted with this team and manager right now.

The only way Melky gets hit today is if they have a 4-5 run lead. They’ll get him before the season’s over.

i’ve never seen a team have so many players go into major slumps as the Braves.
I know it happens in baseball, but player after player. Good players, average players, role players go completely in the toilet for long stretches at a time. Year after year.
A players perspective no longer in atlanta might be insightful on why this is becoming common here?

Would Melky have been allowed to play the fool like this in New York? I think not.
Meanwhile, good news that the Braves are leading, but this has been a pretty inept offensive output outside of the home runs.
What pitiful at bats and results in the last couple of innings. Meek, even.
