Jonny Venters will likely make minor-league rehab appearances Friday and Sunday for Triple-A Gwinnett as the left-handed reliever prepares to return from the disabled list.
Venters was placed on the DL with elbow soreness. He was scheduled to throw another bullpen session Wednesday and would be cleared for the rehab stint if all went well.
Venters said he threw a mix of 39 pitches pain free off the bullpen mound Tuesday.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez wants Venters to make two rehab appearances. He is available to come off the disabled list on Friday but would likely be activated on Tuesday for the second of a three-game series at the Marlins.
In other news:
* Tyler Pastornicky fielded balls in the outfield before Wednesday’s game and the Braves continue to cross-train the utility man. “If he stays up here long enough, you may see him out there in left field one game,” Gonzalez said.
* Craig Kimbrel has converted 19 straight save opportunities since his only blown save of the season on May 2. Opponents are batting just .073 (6-for-82) against Kimbrel during the stretch.
* Andrelton Simmons completed his first for four weeks in a cast for a broken right hand. The rookie shortstop joked he had already grown so tired of the cast he nearly cut it off himself over the weekend. “I’m glad the team is winning,” Simmons said of watching. “I’ve become a real fan, the number one fan.”
