Sheets leads Braves to seventh straight win

From his backyard in Monroe, La. to pitching in a third-deck setting, as Ben Sheets described Turner Field, the former four-time All-Star for the Milwaukee Brewers never flinched.

After two elbow surgeries and two years out of the sport, Sheets returned to the major leagues Sunday with six shutout innings against the Mets to lift his new Braves team to a season-high seventh straight win, 6-1. The Braves used a three-game sweep of the Mets to pull within three games of the first-place Nationals.

“It was pretty incredible,” Sheets said afterward. “Honestly in my mind, two years ago I was done, which was fine. I gave myself ‘coach of the year’ award in youth ball. Somebody asked me ‘Who gives that?’ I said ‘I give it to myself.’”

One of those youth players – his 8-year-old son Seaver – has been encouraging Sheets since March, when he began building his arm back up by pitching to Seaver’s “throwback” machine. When asked about his dad’s effort Sunday, Seaver said it was “good.”

Just good?

“Great,” he said, smiling.

Seaver’s reaction was more enthusiastic later in the clubhouse, when he and his brother Miller, 5, rushed into their father’s arms. For the first time since the middle of 2008, Sheets’ elbow wasn’t bothering him after a game.

“I feel like myself,” said Sheets, who out-dueled Johan Santana for his first win since July 10, 2010 with the Athletics. “That’s one thing I can say I never felt like in Oakland.”

Sheets said he couldn’t help but feel some nerves as he took the ball in the first inning, after Chipper Jones flipped it to him and said “just like riding a bike.”

That’s pretty much how it looked.

Sheets threw a 91 mph strike to Ruben Tejada to start his day, setting up his first strikeout, and finished it with a 91 mph fastball past David Wright for his fifth strikeout. He allowed only two hits in between, walked one, and threw 57 of 88 pitches for strikes.

Sheets faced one jam in those six innings but looked like a man who relished the chance to show he could escape one. After getting Wright to fly out to strand a pair of runners in scoring position in the third inning, Sheets clapped his right hand into his glove as he walked off the mound.

“That was a big moment, a big pitch,” Sheets said. “That pitch could really turn things around.”

It was the first of 10 consecutive Mets set down by Sheets.

The Braves offense, meanwhile, took a while to get rolling against Santana, who was scoreless through four, but once they started they rolled up six runs in the fifth inning. Matt Diaz just needed a little time to get loose. Santana’s recurring nightmare doubled to center to start the inning rally and move to .514 (19-for-37) for his career against the Mets left-hander.

“I feel a lot of pressure against him,” said Diaz, who also made a pair of great catches in left field in the ninth. “Fredi (Gonzalez) plays the matchups, so you feel like you better go out and do the job, especially if you are sitting someone with the power of [Dan] Uggla. There was a lot of pressure there, but it’s a lot of fun too.”

Santana failed to get a strike call on a borderline pitch to Michael Bourn, with runners first and second, and Bourn then drove in a run with a double.

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen got ejected for arguing with homeplate umpire C.B. Bucknor during a visit to the mound, but the damage was done. Martin Prado drove in a run on sacrifice fly and Jason Heyward, Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman followed with hits. Freeman broke it open with a three-run home run, his 12th of the season.

“We might have caught some breaks on some pitch calls but so did they at some point,” Diaz said. “We took advantage when we did.”

Sheets, who hadn’t pitched since July 19, 2010, showed that his fastball was back to 90-92 mph, and touched 93 mph a few times to Wright. He also mixed in the curveball he was known for on days like when he struck out 18 Braves in 2004.

“We are ecstatic,” Jones said. “We get contributions like that from him, I see us winning a lot of games here in the second half.”

Good win for the Braves. One more pitcher and we got a good rotation. Liriano, Dempster, Garza, or Vargas. All have been scouted by the Braves for a while.

I turtned to the game and saw Ben Sheets pitching Didn’t know or realize that he was with the Braves at this point in time, but he pitched a whale of a game. And Paul Janiesh at SS. Also didn’t know about the Braves gettting him. Now I would like to know who they traded in order to get Janish.

@ Kendall Jones,

I believe it was Todd Redmond, one of their minor league pitchers who’s made a few stops at the MLB level, who was traded for Janish.

Regarding Sheets, it looks like mutual relief and vindication for him and the Braves. Great job in his first game back helping his new team keep forward momentum in the NL East race!

Welcome to the ATL Mr. Sheets. Fine job. Maybe I was wrong about this signing.

7 game winning streak. That’s pretty good too………BUT……….before we get too impressed with ourselves, I did some checking. Since May 20, the day before the 8 game losing streak, we are 23W and 23L. We need to pick it up considerably from here on out.

K. Jones…..

I you ever want to be informed on your own…….you can go to the Atlanta Braves website (you can Google it if you do not have it on favorites) and check…..TRANSACTIONS…..it will give you the information you need. But the player traded was the minor league pitcher the Braves called up for a day or two recently and then sent him back to G-Braves (Richmond)…..he is out of options after this year and was not coming back to A-Braves this year….Janish was gone after this year in the Reds system as well. Janish will provide a great glove and no bat until Simmons gets back….hopefully this year.

“a shot in the arm”…..is probably not a reference Ben Sheets would use these day…..but I agree. Delgado has a lot of potential…..but it needs to be refined by someone in the minors. I have a feeling it is going to be refined on another team……like the Cubs…..after a trade for Dempster.

Ben Sheets looks like another reclamation project that turns out to be gold, like so many previous examples under Bobby Cox. One of the great things about the Braves organization is the restorative waters found in the special Dasani bottles made just for Leo Mazzone. Wow. I thought, and hoped, Sheets would be effective, but he far exceeded my expectations. If he’s durable, he is a huge addition and may make all the difference in the Braves’ year. Janish should have quieted some of his skeptics, too. He made two very nice, tough plays in the field. He didn’t get a hit, but he did score a run after walking. Not a great offensive threat, but he will make some contributions, and he certainly looked as though he belonged on that field.

Why are we so quick assume that Chipper’s personal situation is caused by some failing on his part?As a guy who found out that my ex-wife was doing extra curricular activities with her personal trainer from the gym, i dont give women the benefit of the doubt any longer. She may have wanted Chipper to quit a couple of years ago, and when he stayed in the game, maybe she retaliated in some way. Smoltz is about as saintly as it gets, and he got divorced. I’m guessing it was because he stayed on the road too long as well. Congratulations on the sweep Braves fans. Now you got your payback for that series in New York to start the season. Who would have figured that an old, run down Ben Sheets would have pitched like that. I admit he pitched great against the magnificent Johan Santana.
But have you sent a thank you card to the umpires yet? Spread the word to the rest of MLB. Don’t go to Atlanta if you are looking for a fair game. The umps ripped off the Mets in the 5th inning on Sat., and then today, the umps called the game to the Braves favor again in the 5th. Johan had Janish struck out but the plate ump gives him a walk. Then he has Bourn struck out twice, but the ump kept calling strikes balls and Bourn ends up getting a big hit. Then they throw out out pitching coach! “and won 14 Eastern Division titles in a row…”

Winning a division title is simply a ticket to the first round of the playoffs. I can say for certain that most Yankees or Cardinals fans couldn’t recite many of the years when division titles were won, but will tell you every WS year won or lost. This whole idea of trumpeting division title wins comes from markets that have little to celebrate.

I was really impressed with Sheets today because I thought he was having trouble locating his breaking pitch which was always a killer and he still pitched great. His fast ball was a little slower but he showed he is a pitcher and not a thrower. Keep up the good work Ben.

and i would rather take 120 games of chipper for 7 straight years rather than 162 one year and 0 the next 3 or more/retirement because he’s not as durable as he’s aged. take this year, it seems like after giving chip a couple days off he goes 3-4 with an RBI or two.

“without a doubt has hall of fame talent, he’s not a hall of fame person.”

If what is reported is, in fact, close to the truth I couldn’t say it any better.

It struck me as odd when Larry commented during the All-Star game that this was the first time any of his kids joined him there. Perhaps ages of the kids were a factor or something else got in the way, but in the absence of a logical reason he barely made this one to give them that experience. I’ll assume that a legitimate reason prevented the huge treat from happening previously.

He is the only switch hitter in Major League Baseball history to have a .300+ career batting average and 400 or more home runs. As of the this season, Jones is the most senior active MLB player to have spent his entire career with one club, playing with the Braves for 19 consecutive seasons.

The reason why Cards fans and Yadi Molina gave Chip that huge ovation was because their own face of the franchise in Albert Pujols didnt have the loyalty to the team that Chipper had to the Braves. Chipper could have commanded well over the $90 million extension he signed for.

I was at the Louisville Bats-Gwinnett Braves’ game Friday (22 Bats-1 Braves) and saw Janish play. I turned on the Braves’ game today and there was Janish in a Braves’ uniform. I thought I was hallucinating. The Braves traded Todd Redmond on Sat. for Janish. Janish and Pastornicky were playing against each other Friday in AAA and on Sunday they are on the same ML team. Cinci was happy to get rid of Francisco and made quick use of the pitcher acquired in the trade. Good luck to Pastornicky and Sheets. Both can make a difference.

The Braves did look good in their first series after the All Star Break. But it is just the first series after the break the dog days are here for 6 more weeks. That’s when the Braves will show who they really are as a team.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a Braves fan through and through. My man cave has plans for being decked out in Braves memorabilia including Hank Aaron and Dale Murphy signatures. Don’t let your memories get too short Braves fans. Do you remember the Nats series at the end of June? Specifically the Saturday June 30th game. Yes, they won that only game of the series. However, there are two types of teams that make the playoffs. The first type rockets to a 7-2 lead in the 5th, and wins the game 9-3. The second type rockets to a 7-2 lead in the 5th and lets the tying run get to the plate in the 7th. Guess which one wins a playoff series.
Sheets was great today, yet he has 14 more starts if he stays healthy and in the rotation until October 3rd. The Braves have been having a tendency over the past 16 years to be quite Old Red Sox-esque in their pursuit of, and performance in the post season. Does September 1 through October 3 2010, ring a bell? The Braves began September 3 games in first place and suffered, a very in character, end of season meltdown. They won just 13 of their last 29 ending their last month with a .448 win percentage. Many complained of injuries that plagued the Braves, and they would have done better if . . . Playoff caliber teams don’t say if. . .
The Braves have some work to do if they want to surpass the Nationals’ pitching abilities. And next weekend will be the best test of the season. You will have your answer as to whether the Braves can hoist another Division, or NLCS banner in the fall next Sunday around 5pm or so after a grueling Nats doubleheader on Staurday.

@ Tampa Gator,

As I told you before, I have used a different name on here once or twice, but have never used another members name on here. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I say what I want to say whether it makes people happy, or makes them mad.

I also have been a fan of this team for over 30 years. Just because I call them out for playing like crap when they play like crap doesn’t make me a fair weather fan. Just like when they play good, I give them their props, which again doesn’t make me a fair weather fan.

Fair weather fans are those that can’t stand a team when they are losing, and love them when they are winning. Last time I checked, they absolutely sucked back in the 80’s and I was still a fan then, just like I am now. True fans hate it when their teams loses, they don’t just say ” Oh well, go get them tomorrow” That to me is a fair weather, non passionate fan. I don’t spend all the money I spend each year to just casually call myself a Braves. I purchase the MLB Extra Innings package every year, go to at least 1 game in Milwaukee every year when the Braves play here, my basement here in Wisconsin is completely decked out with Braves memorabilia that I have obtained over the years. I am not a fair weather fan, I am a passionate Atlanta Braves fan and HATE IT when they lose. That is me, sorry if you don’t like it, but one thing is for absolute certain, I WILL NEVER CHANGE!!

This is after they kicked out our manager on Sat.! Then, even after all that, that crooked eyed ump kept squeezing Johan and more runs scored!

“if Sheets pitches anything close to this for the rest of the year…..”

He’s 91-92 for his career.Don’t count on it.

IDIOT!! Do you not know how to use stats correctly or what is your problem? Ben Sheets in his prime was a #1 starter, unquestioned. The man started the All-Star game in 2008… So we shouldn’t expect Justin Verlander to continue his sucess 4 years from now, by your logic… Records for pitchers are meaningless…many are given poor run support, especially when they play for anemic offenses, any baseball fan knows this, and the fact you even mentioned W-L record to support an argument about talent shows you as the idiot of the blog. Mike Minor has a winning record 13-11 all-time, so is he a great or even good pitcher? Oh, I left out his 5.27 career ERA sorry. Back to my point Ben Sheets has a career ERA of 3.79, and it was made higher by an injury plagued 2010 with Oakland. By comparison Cliff Lee has a career ERA of 3.66, CC sabathia 3.51, Josh Beckett 3.87, Chris Carpenter 3.76…so why can’t we expect success like this the rest of the year, from a former #1 starter, with a superb ERA, who struck out 18 braves in a game, 264 in a season, and started the All-Star game just 4 years ago??

Where has anyone see the Uggla for Upton rumor? I have only seen that on Braves blogs. I wouldn’t trade Prado for Upton, but Uggla for Upton absolutely, even if we had to include a prospect. The ssalary we give away is a plus as well. it would take care of Upton’s salary, plus some

Then a move for a topline pitcher, preferrably Greinke, but there a few to choose from at this point. I have no idea what it would take, but I am sure 2 pitching prospects at least. I would imagine 2 out of the following, Teheran, Delgado, Minor and Gilmartin, plus another prospect. I would include any combintion of those four except both Delgado AND Teheran.

I think the reason Minor was not sent to AAA instead of Delgado, is that he is being showcased.

@ Reckingball,

Opinions are like A-Holes, everyone has one. I will guarantee that I spend more money each and every year on the Braves than you do, I will also guarantee that I have much more Braves memorabilia then you do. I have watched almost every single Braves game for the past 10 years, can you say that? I highly doubt it.

I grew up in West Palm Beach Florida and went to every spring training of the Braves and have a picture that was taken of me with both Dale Murphy and Bob Horner that is in a glass case signed by both of them right next to the baseball that was also signed by them, do you have that? Again, highly doubt it.

I have in a big glass jersey case a authentic Atlanta Braves home jersey that is signed by Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Bobby Cox, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, David Justice, Mark Teixeira, Tommy Hanson, Tim Hudson, Terry Pendelton, Freddie Freeman, Johnny Venters, Craig Kimbrel, and many others that is the highlight of my Atlanta Braves themed finished basement. Can you say that? Again, I highly, highly doubt it.

So saying I am a fair weather fan is like the pot calling the kettle black. I have spent more money on something that I am supposedly “Fair Weathered” about than you spent on anything in your life, and that I will guarantee.

How about the comment that Chipper told Sheets before the first pitch.. “Just like riding a bike.” That obviously made Sheets feel more at ease, and it may be the difference between a very nervous pitcher, and a guy who allowed 0 runs and 2 hits. I had the honor of meeting John Smoltz a few years ago, and he told me that if it hadn’t been for a 7 year old girl’s comment to him before the 7th game of the ‘91 WS, he would have been a mess. He was warming up in the bullpen before the game, and Leo was asking him how he felt. He said, “I’m nervous.” Leo told him he’d be okay. Leo came back a couple minutes later, and asked again, and Smoltz said, “I’m nervous.” Smoltz was then throwing his last warmup toss, and he fired it. Right after he let it go, he saw a 7 year old girl walking right behind Olsen, his catcher. Olsen caught it, and Smoltz breathed a sigh of relief. Smoltz then went to the little girl and asked her why she was out there on the field. She said she was singing the National Anthem. He said, “Wow! For the 7th game of the World Series? Are you nervous?” She said, I’m nervous, but I’m ready!” Leo then at that moment walked up and asked Smoltz how was he. Smoltz said, “I’m nervous, but I’m ready!” Smoltz says he will never forget how that comment made him pitch that night. I can guarantee that comment from Chipper did the same for Sheets. WTG Chipper and Ben!
