Detroit and LA on and Porcello, Tigers started is spiking it in the ground nicely…..Pujols, Prince and Tori Hunter–you would think it good–probably is for alot but I disdain AL.
July 16th, 20128:50 pm
Randall has a thing about those big homers, huh.
Sorry for the misleading remark. My $12-13.5 are my numbers. I just don’t think he is a $14 million-plus player for what he does.
$14 mil and above is for people who hit 30 or more dingers a year, drive in 100-plus, AND hit .300.
July 16th, 20128:56 pm
I’ll let it slide…………… this time.
July 16th, 20128:59 pm
Delgado and Teheran getting SHELLED in the Minors and Minor getting shelled in the BIGS….Can we trade some of these guys while they still have value???
The A Bomb
July 16th, 20129:01 pm
Zambrano induces Flores to hit into a double play with the bases loaded…
MIAMI 4 WASHINGTON 3 BOT 6
July 16th, 20129:03 pm
some fake type site was posting that earlier today Wayne. Seriously doubt there is any chance of Boras/Bourn allowing that to happen
July 16th, 20129:05 pm
who cares about batting avg and rbi’s (rbi’s are NOT a product of individual effort but rather the product of the quality of the players in front of him to get on base).
but these days $14mill a year and up are or players who give consistent 4 win value and an OPS between .820-.880 over .880 you enter into $16-$20 mill a year players
that is the guy who founded CAC TCB
July 16th, 20129:06 pm
they are all very young, I don’t understand why the urge to trade away 21 year old pitchers because they haven’t morphed into Halladay and Lee overnight
can you actually win a game without Ribbies???
July 16th, 20129:08 pm
one little sidenote to my post above about wins and OPS, guys like Bourn enter that realm because of their defensive value, though I doubt he ever clears an .800 OPS again, which is why I don’t like giving him and more than $13 mill a season tops
Delgado’s line for the night
5.0 IP, 6H, 6ER, 1BB, 5K 2HR, ERA 10.80 Ouch
ummm no, but you can’t judge a PLAYER buy his RBI total
July 16th, 20129:09 pm
Im tellin ya, we better trade a few of these young arms (Teheran, Delgado, Minor) while they still have some trade value.
July 16th, 20129:10 pm
Ryan Howard had 116 RBI’s last year and Pujols only had 99, I wouldn’t say that Howard was a better player because he had 17 more RBI’s
July 16th, 20129:13 pm
I’m telln ya that if we trade more than ONE of them, we are going to be in big trouble as far as our future rotation is concerned due to the under $100 mill payroll.
Braves MUST have 3 under control rotation spots at any given moment, especially with the following players either in arb or entering it soon : Heyward, Freeman,Kimbrel,Venters,Prado, Hanson
Team doesn’t have the dough to trade all the young arms away
I knew one day some rock n roll lyrics would make sense.
War, war, war, war
War, what is it good for?
Say it, war, good god now, what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it, war
July 16th, 20129:15 pm
c’mon now Nick surely you must know by now that I am up on everything statgeek, and thus am teasing you with stuff like the above.
July 16th, 20129:16 pm
“5.0 IP, 6H, 6ER, 1BB, 5K 2HR, ERA 10.80 Ouch”
I thought “WAR” was a weird name for a stat. “Ouch” is more unusual.
Wow. Delgado getting smoked in AAA. Sigh….
Kids need have some growing up to do.
July 16th, 20129:17 pm
I can’t tell unless you put smileys….. sorry I’m always in attack mode n this place cuz of the massive amount of idiots who like to show up here, plus I am trying to help people understand how the newer stats have improved the understanding of the game
July 16th, 20129:18 pm
WAR is not actually a stat, it is a mathematical model that tries to cram a lot of stats together to prove that your favorite player is the greatest. If one version doesn’t work, just pick another version TCB
plus, people on here respect you, and when you say stuff like you did above, they assume you are on their side and it further obfuscates the issue
I don’t hold tonight’s game against Delgado. Had to be a huge letdown to be sent down. No way he was focused for this game.
July 16th, 20129:20 pm
Carlos Quentin scratched…
OMG, I just added him to my fantasy today to cover Kubel being out………… I’m gonna get creamed
July 16th, 20129:22 pm
technically you can win a game without rbi’s…
July 16th, 20129:24 pm
I think most here know where I stand on the issue, though perhaps a few newbies or dummies might not get it. I believe in stats, some more than others. I have little respect for any of the current math models derived from them, and i think that anybody who relies mostly on them as gospel is likely overlooking a lot of non-statistical variables. I believe in looking at both sides of everything and using as many different types of info as is available…… and I believe that I am almost always right
nick – I think the use of words like obfuscates serve as well to confuse many on this blog…
July 16th, 20129:25 pm
problem with Carlos is that he gets scratched way too often over the years
hiya tiger, how ya been?
July 16th, 20129:26 pm
true buddy, but not enough to win the pennant….
July 16th, 20129:27 pm
Man a couple of years ago I thought Logan Morrison was destined for superstardom. No longer. Very shaky.
July 16th, 20129:28 pm
I’m sorry, what are you doing here? Helping us all understand that newer stats have value? Trust me, Nick, I think the large majority of us understand that new stats have value. I just wouldn’t believe everything that those CAC folks have to say…..
there is no better single number to point at than fWAR to describe and compare players.
That’s why it was created, since it applies equally to everyone at each position it gives an accurate picture of who was best and who was worst….. It’s also an easy way to attribute value.
I also read scouting reports and watch players as much as possible too, and that also has value, but lots of guys looked good to scouts and ended up to be busts also. The eye lies to us. hence statistical analysis
I like to throw in an obfuscatin’ obfuscation every so often myself. I think anything you know without looking up is fair usage
July 16th, 20129:29 pm
Sorry, Nick, but the newfangled stats are for those who love math and try to reinvent the baseball wheel. Simply put, if you have a good ball club with a top three that gets on base, and you have a traditional 30/100/.300 hitter in the four spot, chances are that player is MVP caliber and your club’s offense is doing better than the average.
By the way, no need for your condescension. If you’re not here to dialogue and have a good time, we may have to re-examine your life priorities at best, or take anger management classes or meds at worst. Just sayin’.
says you Nick. its just a theory with no possible way of being proven true,
Ryan Howard had 116 RBI’s last year and Pujols only had 99, I wouldn’t say that Howard was a better player because he had 17 more RBI’s _ NickB
Howard is more clutch
I’ve been ok …just crazy busy
July 16th, 20129:30 pm
took a job in a new group at AT&T so I actually have to go into the office takes away a bunch of my free time
July 16th, 20129:31 pm
so no time fer you and lil tger to go to some games?
i’ve been a saber nerd for awhile, and sometimes I disagree with the CAC folks too (I still am not a fan of the way Saber stats define first base defense, I don’t think it’s worth a crap)
SOME peopl on here get the value, some of them seem to spend their entire time making fun of it
anyway, rant over…. i didn’t intend for this to turn into ,.well all of this! lol
July 16th, 20129:32 pm
you are so serious about it that you make an easy target for meanies like me Nick. I am definitely going to hell…..
Bethancourt walked tonight…….so there’s that….
July 16th, 20129:33 pm
great news Efrim, thanx. best thing I read here all day
July 16th, 20129:34 pm
Miguel Cabrera drove himself in with no RBI on a play with like 10 errors the other day. I think Yakety Sax was playing over the PA.
If that had been the only run, Detroit would’ve won with no RBIs
(rbi’s are NOT a product of individual effort but rather the product of the quality of the players in front of him to get on base).
Yep, I’ve noticed that Heyward has a few one hit games lately with an rbi. Good thing those guys knew which time to get on base in front of him.
July 16th, 20129:35 pm
clutch is a myth, no player is clutch, good players “appear” clutch because they tend to hit at a a similar level to their normal higher production.
clutch situations exist, but a good hitter will be a good hitter regardless, and a bad hitter a bad hitter.
plus like I said, the RBI thing is a proven, the players in the best position with the best OBP batting in front of them will always score more RBI’s than a better player with a lesser OBP in front of him.
Of course a 100 RBI guy is generally going to be a good player, because he will be hitting in the position to have the high OBP people hitting in front of him. You wouldn’t hit Tulowitski 8th! lol
ya’ll are all crazy… cardinals won the WS so obviously freese is more valuable than howard
July 16th, 20129:36 pm
July 16th, 20129:37 pm
Nick sorta reminds me of a young Peter….
and if there had been nobody on base in front of him it would have just been a hit
July 16th, 20129:38 pm
young ? I’m almost 40, and with all the drugs and drinking I’m probably almost 60
July 16th, 20129:40 pm
no still making baseball games. although this is the time of year I go to the fewest games…tickets sell better during the summer and the weather is so much hotter (with occasional rain) that we only go to 1-2 per homestand.
It is crazy to me what people will pay for baseball tickets
July 16th, 20129:41 pm
sorry I’m always in attack mode n this place cuz of the massive amount of idiots who like to show up here, plus I am trying to help people understand how the newer stats have improved the understanding of the game NickB
Thus proving just how full of shyt you are most of the time.
July 16th, 20129:43 pm
MLB has free Braves (all baseball) this week, and I’m on the frickin road in hotels with cable.
man little gratuitious violence on the blog tonight…twitter is so much more civil
July 16th, 20129:44 pm
Thus proving just how full of shyt you are most of the time.
ha! Coming from Jerry
Mauricio Cabrera with 5 IP, 3 hits, 0 ER, 2 BB’s and 6 K’s for Danville
Free??? what on MLB network??
July 16th, 20129:45 pm
nice personal attack, one day something terrible is gonna happen to you, and I hope I hear about it
no game and people are still cranky?
MIAMI 4 WASHINGTON 3 BOT 7
July 16th, 20129:46 pm
Are you new here? Hey, my name’s Jeff!
like tht line Efrim
gratuitous personal attack
July 16th, 20129:47 pm
something terrible already happened to him, he turned into Jerry
Let me re-phrase. No game and people are still crankily violent towards each other?
July 16th, 20129:48 pm
Yeah…I like WAR because it is one number that ascribes a total value to a player including his D. It is common enough now that at least most big baseball fans have heard of it, and I think it can be a starting point for learning about a player.
For example, Jay Bruce has been an all star two years running and when I look him on baseball-reference I notice that sure enough, Bruce is a guy with decent home run power and rbi numbers. Typical middle of the order, corner outfielder numbers. I look him at the fangraphs leaderboard for RFers and he ranks 8th among RFers in the NL!? Which of course makes me ask why on earth do all those geeks who live in their Mom’s basement derive a mathematical model that obviously undervalues Jay Bruce? I mean, dude is ranked behind Gregor Blanco.
So it turns out that Bruce kinda sucks at getting on base and all of the defensive metrics don’t like him. Do I think he is a better player than Gregor Blanco? Well of course. But perhaps the difference there isn’t quite as much as I thought at one time.
fight fight !!
was watching a game the other day and the commentator said “the way the nationals are playing now everyone else is just playing for the wildcard”
I often wonder how some of these people maintain a job…then I look around my office and realize it ain’t just sports media. We get spoiled with the talent we have supporting out fix.
July 16th, 20129:50 pm
soph meet jeff – he is a carnie so kinda busy this time of year
sure a starting point. not the ending point. for one thing even Bill James and other will admit that defensive metrics are still well behind pitching or hitting stats in reliability.
July 16th, 20129:51 pm
Bonfacio squeezes home a run….
MIAMI 5 WASHINGTON 3 BOT 7
Fish push across a run on a perfect squeeze play…lead 5-3 in 7th
so who do we pull for in this game tonight? I realize nat’s are likely more credible long term threat this year but I so hate the marlins.
July 16th, 20129:52 pm
pulling for the Fish, no question
July 16th, 20129:53 pm
5 years of gonzo managing them they learned how to put down a squeeze…guess braves will have it in 3 more years (wonder if gonzo will still be here?)
July 16th, 20129:54 pm
well they are up by 2 so obviously i’m pulling for them….now
Gotten any word today on how Sheets is feeling the day after?
true they are, but when applied equally to everybody that all evens out
July 16th, 20129:55 pm
Miami has too many head cases , starting with their crazy manager
July 16th, 20129:56 pm
offensively logan reminds me of frenchie..
no, I am not gonna tease Nick any more right now…..
July 16th, 20129:57 pm
Actually Marlins got a leadoff double from Ruggiano….
Reyes bunted him to 3rd…
Bonafacio squeezed him home.
Even Guillen gets it once in a blue moon.
You are new here! It’s Jeff D.
Personally, I think it’s a bit silly to try to boil down everything that a baseball player does on the field into one single number.
I see the value of the advanced stats but some folks take it way too far.
July 16th, 20129:58 pm
nolie – so we let them win know expecting them to fall apart in september?
nice personal attack, one day something terrible is gonna happen to you, and I hope I hear about it NickB
Okay, then let me be the first to make you a happy camper. I have colon cancer.
July 16th, 20129:59 pm
YOUKILIS: 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. LOL!
July 16th, 201210:00 pm
a-bomb…they give up a 3 run jack and lose then we can bash him for not playing for the big inning
My personal nightmare of an inning. Reads like the perfect way to kill a rally. Let me get this straight…You are up by one run already. You have a guy on 2nd in scoring position, and you call for two consecutive bunts? Sickening.
July 16th, 201210:01 pm
Damn Jerry! Obviously this is a real personal thing for you. Best wishes all around.
I’m pre-basing tiger.
