McCann, Pastornicky back

Vivlamore reporting from Turner Field.

The Braves made two roster moves before Saturday’s game with the Mets.

Brian McCann returned from paternity leave after the birth of his son Friday. J.C. Boscan was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett after a one-day stint for McCann.

The Braves also re-called Tyler Pastornicky from Gwinnett to fill the shortstop position after the injury to Andrelton Simmons (officially placed on DL with broken hand) and Jack Wilson (day-to-day with dislocated pinkie). Martin Prado will start at shortstop Saturday after he replaced Wilson in the fifth inning Friday.

A trade to acquire a short-term shortstop is still possible. General manager Frank Wren said Friday is didn’t want to move Pastornicky up and down a great deal as they have started to get the young player time at second base and eventually outfield.

Here is the rest of the lineup:

1. Bourn 8

2. Prado 6

3. Heyward 9

4. Jones 5

5. Freeman 3

6. McCann 2

7. Uggla 4

8. Hinske 7

9. Hanson 1

More details to come

i have no problem leaving my boy Marteen at SS.
I have all the confidence in the world in his skills there.
Go get a LF who we can have for the next few years.
Prado can move to 3B next year…
and so long to Juan “i have to swing at every single pitch no matter what” Francisco.

Lets not get carried away…Prado is not a shortstop. This is more or less an emergency situation. I’m thinking we’ll have a trade officially announced by tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

If we’re sitting here Tuesday without a new shortstop, I would be then very concerned.

Prado is amazing and a big part of the heart of this team. The fact that his name is/was being tossed around in trade rumors is a shame.

Pradorules- i agree 100%.

He moves to LF to help the team.
He fills in at 3B when CJ is out to help the team.
He fills in at 1B because of injury to help the team.
He fills in at SS because of injury to help the team.
He most likely will be back at 3B next season.

What did he get in this past off season? Shopped by Frank Wren.

Give the man his due! The fans love him and he is the glue of this team on and off the field.

-sign him!

This situation again points to the weakness of the Braves bench. Hinske in left is a liability and no help at the plate. Trade him and bring up Constanza. Diaz and Francisco are similarly no help. Release them. Wilson is terrible and his injury should be the beginning of the end for him on this team. Release him. Bring up skilled minor leaguers to fill in until trades can be made. I don’t look forward to tonight’s game – Hinske is awful and Prado is not a SS despite his fill-in success.

Understand the move, but Braves have really soured on this kids defensive ability at SS if they are starting Prado at SS instead of Pastor. He was in Gwinnett not halfway across the country. Pastor can play, it’s just that he will be better suited at 2nd base. Now if the Braves can get power hitting left fielder for Uggla and a couple of second tier prospects and put Prado back at second until next year, then all will be good.

Prado may be ok for a stopgap, but ss is too important a defensive position not to have a solid everyday ss playing the position. There are other places in the lineup for Prado’s bat, lets get a real shortstop!

I really liked today’s lineup until we got to the #8 spot. Why Hinske in LF? Diaz seems just as (more) capable of hiting a knuckleball than Hinske and provides a modicum of defense in the OF. What combination is worse defensively — Prado at SS and Hinske in LF, or Rev at SS and Prado in LF?

Yes, Prado ‘can’ play SS. But I want him on LF or 3B. I dont want Diaz or ‘Ske in LF evetyday (even though I like them, although ‘Ske’s BA is garbage this year). Hopefully Pasto settled down and doesnt commit so many throwing errors this time. Either Wren should have had other clubs on blast all week getting a rental trade (which i dont agree with either) or this should have happened wednesday or thursday.

jim

The decision not to recall Pastor last night (and drop the pitcher who Sheets will replace Sunday two days earlier) almost cost the Braves big-time last night. Prado saved Wren’s bacon by filling in ably at SS, but in the fifth inning after Bautista walked the bases loaded, Fredi was left hamstrung. The smart move (hopefully for Fredi too) would have been to announce Diaz as the pinch hitter. Collins would have probably gone to the pen no matter who the hitter, but the choice of Diaz vs the lefty or Diaz vs Bautista had a better chance of success than Francisco against a lefty. The problem was that if Fredi hit Diaz used Diaz in that spot and an injury occurred to one of the outfielders, there was nobody left to play the OF. The two pitchers who might have a shot — Hudson and Medlen — were otherwise employed. The other alternatives would be Chipper in LF and Francisco at 3B. Ross in left and Boscan at C. We were left one more injury/ejection from a big disaster by that shortsighted decision, and it looked at the time of the Francisco at bat that the Braves really needed to score in that situation.

I agree that Hinske should not be in the lineup. Pastornicky or Diaz either one would be better.

Plus I thought Bourne might get thrown out for arguing with the ump while Gonzo sat on his arse and did nothing to protect or defend his player with the ump’s bad calls.

And he has been responsible for 5-10 losses with his poor managing decisions.

Never thought I would miss Bobby Cox so much. :(

Saying Diaz is better than Hinske vs Dickey is like saying broccoli is tastier than Brussels sprouts, but his right-field stroke could prove more effective than Hinske’s aggressive pull-oriented approach against the knuckleball. Ditto for the Rev vs. Hinske. In any event, either option provides somewhat better defense. With Hinske in LF any hard single that is not right at him becomes a likely double or triple.

The G-Braves are in Louisville, Ky this weekend. It’ll take Rev more than 45 minutes.

Dawgdad (The Original)

Just a guess, but I think they just want to look at Martin at SS for another game or so. If they think he can play the position, it gives them more flexibility in the trading area. Could they count on him as an adequate backup at SS, and if so, they can return Rev to Gwinnett. Obviously they have seen enough of Rev at SS to decide his future is as a utility man, sec, third, outfield.

Wren and Fredi are lost it seems, when talent needs to be evaluated, takes them awhile to see what us sophisticated bloggers see right off.

Prado can play good wherever you stick him, but not sure I want to see him at SS for the long haul. Pastornicky couldn’t do offensively or defensively what Simmons could do, so we are taking a big step backwards in both of those areas if we have to use Pastornicky for any length of time at SS. I like Prado at SS, but not at the expense of using Hinske or Diaz everyday in the field. Neither of those guys are great defenders.

The Braves need to trade for a SS if they are to keep pace at what they have been doing since Simmons came up.

Putting Prado in a new, uncomfortable position will not do his offense any favor. I think some of last year’s struggles were the result of constantly being shifted between LF and 3B — to new positions. This year he has a comfort level at both, and now he is being asked to fill in at SS. Play Prado in LF, the Rev as SS and get Hinske back on he bench where he belongs. The defense is worse with Hinske in the OF than the Rev at SS.

Since Hinske had a great 4-6 game with his only HR on May 4, to push his batting average to .412, he’s gone 6-66, which is a .091 average. That’s worse than terrible! Maybe Hinske will shock the world today with a couple of hits. BUT, even if Pastornicky’s not the best SS, when you combine a .091 average with mediocre left field defense, does Hinske in left give us at better chance to win?!?!? I’d rather see Tyler at SS with Prado in LF than a .091 leftfielder who has limited range in left. If Hinske doesn’t break out of this soon, his days may be numbered. His slump has surpassed 2 months — I hope he does break out today……

ijudgenot: NOBODY is going to that that ugly Uggla contract. No body is THAT in the hurt for a no hitting, swing at the first pitch right after the pitcher walked two straight and could not find home plate if he’d walked up and looked for it. Just shows you how stupid Uggla is when hitting. He swings at anything. He has NO DISCIPLINE at the plate. That was the same when he was at Florida. Ever wonder WHY Florida let him go and did not resign him? That is your reason. They KNEW what they had and knew that there was better out there at a much cheeper price. The Braves are now stuck with a monster contract like the Cubs are with Alphonso the strikeout king. Even if someone took him, it would be with the Braves eating 99% of that contract and that helps the Braves ZERO! The GM should be fired for this contract alone. Much less his other stupid contracts. Although, it does show his versatility to play all the positions he has played this season. I am like most all of you guys. They need to give him a longterm contract, and give him a permanent position to play. I would also suggesrt that they use Ross more than just an occasional catcher. It is clear that the Braves are at or near the top of their ability to add cost to the roster, they are saddled with large contracts for aging veterans (who more than earned today’s deferred payouts earlier in their careers), and have a squad that must hit on 7 of 8 cyclinders to have a chance of winning. It’s like piloting a DC-3 with a balky port engine that’s starting to smoke, while you’re looking for the Hull ranch amidst the mountains of Costa Rica.
