Vivlamore reporting from Turner Field.
The Braves acquired infielder Paul Janish from the Reds Saturday in exchange for pitcher Todd Redmond. The Braves have been trying to acquire a shortstop since Andrelton Simmons broke his right hand last Sunday.
Janish, who will report to the Braves Sunday, played all season at Triple-A Louisville and hit .237 in 49 games. He played 114 games with the Reds in 2011 and hit .214.
“In evaluating after Simmons was hurt and talking to our scouts, we felt Janish was the best defensive shortstop out there that we could acquire,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “He was the number one guy on our list. … He is a proven defensive talent and we felt for our club that was the most important aspect of the acquisition.”
Wren said the corresponding roster move would “not necessarily” be to return Tyler Pastornicky to Triple-A Gwinnett. The team called up Pastornicky Saturday after utility infielder Jack Wilson was injured Friday.
Wren said the Braves were looking at “three or four” shortstops. He did not name other players the team pursued but Yankees minor-leaguer Ramiro Pena is believed to be one.
“We were the pursuers so you can’t necessarily dictate the timetable,” Wren said of the Braves’ search. “[The Reds] had other clubs [interested in Janish]. They were talking to three different clubs this morning about him. There are other clubs looking for shortstops who’ve had injuries. It came down to us and two other teams.”
Janish, 29, has three arbitration-eligible seasons before he can become a free agent.
Redmond, a right-hander, was 6-6 with a 3.58 ERA for Triple-A Gwinnett this season. He was scheduled to be a minor-league free agent after this year. He will report to Triple-A Louisville. In 199 career minor-league appearances, including 193 starts, Redmond is 69-56 with a 3.57 ERA.

pretty underwhelming move, trading for a AAA guy that can’t hit; but really it’s just a short term fix & til Simmons gets back – I doubt Wren wanted to use all of his trade “chips” for this unforseen blip on the radar when he’s likely still looking for pitching and maybe a bench bat. Nothing to get excited about but also nothing to get pissed about.

@yeaaaa, Hoover currently has an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.06 for the Cincy pen. Francisco is a AAAA player, out of options, we can’t send him down to AAA where he should be to be getting AB’s.
Hoover could be a contributing pitcher in our pen.
I’d prefer Scutaro or Lowrie or Carroll to Jack Wilson. And I’d sure prefer Lowrie, long term, to Francisco.

Janish is a glove. Period. He was a decent hitter in college, but is overmatched in the majors. He is a lesser-fielding version of Jack Wilson.
For my money I would rather have Pastornicky starting, at least he can provide a spark on offense every now and then.
Redmond was nothign but organizational depth for the Braves. It would take 4-5 starters getting hurt for him to get intot he MLB rotation. He would never amount to more than a middle reliever for the Braves. Solid pitcher, but more like a 5th starter at best in MLB.

Umpires got the play right a while ago – one ump called it a catch and Prado had to go back to 1st based on that, second ump correctly called it a trap. Batter safe, and runner (Prado) awarded 2nd on wrong call by the other ump. Simple. Announcers OTL.

Carroll might’ve been doable since he’s a backup and the Twins are out of it, but Lowrie and Scutaro are major league starters. Even if their teams are conceding the season, they’re not likely to trade MLB starters for minor league depth, and the Braves don’t want to give up a big price for a guy who’d be a starter for a month, then would be bench depth.
I’m kind of wondering if the Braves aren’t thinking about leaving Prado at SS and platooning Diaz and Hinske.

Braves fans don’t cease to amaze me. Did you really think that Atlanta was going to deal for Lowrie, Carroll or Scutaro? They have Andrelton Simmons on the DL. He will start for many years for the Braves. You also have a veteran in Jack Wilson to back him up. Plus, much of the Braves’ minor league talent is at shortstop. They don’t need Lowrie, Carroll or Scutaro. I think Paul Janish can be a utility infielder and they also have Tyler Pastornicky learning the craft of a utility player in the minors. Every trade can’t be for Michael Bourn or Zack Greinke. Jeeesh!

Durbin has been rock solid. Anyone not liking that signing is still stuck in April when he was a little shaky due to lack of spring training action. Since April he has been as good as you could ask for .. so wake up.
As for those asking for Lowrie or Scutaro, you would have to give up at least one top-tier prospect most likely and neither of those guys are worth that for a 6 week rental. so please, stop talking about them. They would cost us far more than they would be worth.
Just let Tyler play until Simmons gets back and move forward.. All this is nonsense.

Ok, for the money and reason we getting Paul Janish this is perfect. He has a great glove and thats what Braves need. He has played 3b and 2b but not much. He also pitched 2 inning in ML. He was hurt in 2011 when hit on wrist while playing with Reds. I usually don’t agree with Wren but I’ll give Janish a chance. I believe he will be received well by team. This probably means Wilson will be put on waivers.

The problem is those proven starters cost a lot more money than the young talent. You have to give at least some young talent a chance because no team can afford to fill their roster with experienced veterans. Even teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox give prospects a chance.
Now, part of the problem is we’re paying Lowe ace money from Wren’s 1st attempt to rebuild the rotation.
To me, the problem that might force the Braves to make a decision about Tommy is that he’s only a couple of years from becoming a free agent. If they think he’s going to demand a contract that’s worth more than what he provides, then they should probably trade him to get some value for him instead of letting him walk.

@ Steve: Solid analysis of the SS situation. My thinking is that the Braves’ brass traded for this new guy to provide backup for Tyler until Andrelton comes back. Maybe in the meantime, Tyler finds his stride. Then, when AS comes back, Tyler becomes the utility IF that he’s been getting prepped at Gwinnett for. IF (and I do mean “IF”) the Braves manage to get in the playoffs, depth in the IF will be most helpful. I like this move. The Braves needed temporary, emergency depth at SS and they got it.

A MISTAKE
I guess Frank is now admitting he made a mistake when he not only traded for Jack Wilson in August of 2011 but also resigned him for the Braves backup duties this season.
Wilson’s injury was classified as day to day, nothing long term. He could have been back in a few days.
But I guess Frank felt he had to make another trade!
I would have preferred giving Pastornicky more major league playing time during the next six weeks. His bat is much better than that of Janish and team won early on with his defense.

About Frank Wren: Give the guy a quite limited budget and expect him to do two things. The first is to cobble together a good, winning MLB team by spending his money and other resources wisely, giving the Braves a shot to go to the playoffs. The second is to keep every ignoramus who thinks he understand both the sport and business of baseball ecstatically happy. (Well, I just made up that second one.)
So far during his tenure, despite serious setbacks no one could have foreseen, such as Simmons’s broken pinky, Wren has done a truly fine job with his first task. What does it take for you knuckleheads to understand that he cannot unilaterally manufacture deals that are beneficial only to the Braves with finite resources? Every purchase has a price, and he cannot afford anything and everything.
With regard to his second task, Wren has been less than successful, as would any smart baseball person – because that task is impossible of achievement! Those who cannot think through the process never will be pleased. It’s sort of like a very small child who wants what he wants and cannot accept the notion that the purpose of the universe is not just to keep him happy.
Fantastic game today!! How do those guys do it, with Wren holding them back like the ignoramuses believe he is doing? How exciting!

Naturally, an even smarter move would be to hire the wasted intellects that spend their time producing such incisive – if quite ignorant – critiques of their every move. I’m sure they would do soooooo much better!

Unless you know for a fact that Wren had not tried to swing a deal with multiple teams then to say he didn’t go after Lowrie and others is simply idiotic. I am pretty confident that the Reds is not the only team that Wren tried to swing a deal with. I have read in multiple places that the Braves have reached out to sign Bourn but Boras has said thanks but no thanks and is going to test the waters. Solid move considering the emergency circumstances. Our top flight SS is out for 4-6 weeks. Lose his bat, lose his glove. So we stick in Jack Wilson. No bat, great glove. He goes down, we bring up Pastornicky. Modest bat, horrid glove. A defensive liability at that position can kill the team, and his first several weeks in the bigs proved that. Probably lost us 3 or 4 games during his tenure. So what does Wren do? Dumps a AAA pitcher out of options who we’d lose after the season anyway, and picks up a talented defensive SS to stand in until Simmons gets back in the lineup. Basically a no lose situation for the Braves, one that allows us to continue to ply a trade for a marquee starting pitcher. You guys are way too hard on Wren.

To those who don’t like the trade, why would you trade for an established shortstop that is only gonna start for 4 to 5 weeks? You’re not seeing the big picture. FW has alot more going on when it comes to trades. Whether or not any trades happen will depend on what is asked for in return. I believe Wren may give a little more talent from the minors, depending on who is coming to Atlanta. Another thing, NO ONE on here has the right to bitch and moan unless you’re the one picking up the tab on who’s coming to Atlanta!! The team has a budget it has to follow.

kerryb – Which pitcher do you want?
Pitcher A -
Age 22: 8-7, 3.22, 82K
Age 23: 4-7, 10.64, 44K
Age 24: 5-3, 3.16, 96K
Pitcher B -
Age 22: 10-4, 2.89, 116K
Age 23: 10-11. 3.33, 173K
Age 24: 11-7, 3.60, 107K
Pitcher A is Roy Halladay (This year: 4-5, 3.98, 56K)
Pitcher B is Tommy Hanson (This year: 10-5, 3.71, 93K)
There is no reason to think Hanson can’t be as good as Halladay has been. In fact, Hanson looks better at this stage in his career than Halladay looked at a similar age and this season Hanson is outperforming Halladay. Verlander is a different story, but just because Hanson hasn’t matched Verlander doesn’t mean he can’t be an ace for years to come.

Simmons is going to be in a cast for 4 weeks so no way he can come back in 4 weeks. 6 weeks is probably when he will go on rehab and back a little after that in early september.

I can’t believe a minor league trade got some of you people so upset. I’ll take a solid defensive SS over Rev until Simmons is back. I think having a talented defensive guy is just fine. He may not blow us away with his bat but if he can make some plays on defense thats alright. Not looking for a silver slugger, just a guy who won’t make us lose games.

This is a nothing trade. Redmond was never going to make it to the big leagues with the pitching depth the Braves have, and Janish is a poor hitter with good defense. The only problem here is that he is not as good offensively or defensively as Simmons, so the Braves in my opinion take a huge step backwards with the injury to Simmons and not getting a better option at SS than Janish.
Oh well, when do the Braves ever get things like this right? He is a stopgap while Simmons heals, but the Braves as a whole take a huge hit with this scenario. The only thing that sucks is that we will more than likely be in this situation for the rest of the season as I don’t think Simmons will be the same once he comes back because he will have to build the strength back in his throwing hand, thus will not be throwing as well, or hitting as well. Hopefully they can stay above water in the final few months here.

say what you will about wren, but ownership is the real problem. Since wren became gm, only the rays have more wins with less money…so he’s a great gm for Liberty, not so much for fans who still remember the 90s
any chance mark cuban is still shopping around? But then again, he’s left the mavs out to dry the last 2 off seasons, maybe he’s outta money. Its tough being a Braves/Cowboys fan post-Maddux/post Aikman

Good move. With Wilson most likey going on the DL they had to make a move. Cincy could have held the braves up for more. There aren’t many even no bat okay defensive shortstops in the high minors that teams are looking to move.
Prado is a gritty player but he isn’t a shortstop. That flip he made yesterday showed his limitations at the position. Any major league shortstop gets to that ball easily while. He should get credit for playing out of position but he doesn’t have the range to play short so they had to make this move.

Let me assure each of you that if the Braves don’t do more to increase their bench they will be out of the playoffs before it begins. They must also must improve the starting pitching, especially the #1 spot. This move does nothing to help once Simmons comes back. We still have a weak bench.

So Wren wastes a good young arm, that we actually may need for pitching depth…who has been solid at AAA, for a .220-.230, no power shortstop, with good defense. Hello? We already have one on the team called Jack Wilson. Janish is Wilson’s exact doppleganger in MLB. I would have rather gone with Prado at SS until Wilson is back in a few days, and then just ride him out for 5 weeks until Simmons is ready. In my opinion we wasted Redmond- a good young arm- for nothing. I am stoked at the 6 game win streak…it seems we are finally getting some hits with RISP…I know!! I am as shocked as everyone at the Braves actually getting some clutch hits for once…

Hanson’s numbers are not as bad for this game as they look as Hinske butchered 3 outs into singles because he cannot run a bit in the outfield. It was difficult to watch as he has been a favorite of mine in the past, but this year he has put on a noticable amount of weight that kills him in the outfield. I was sitting on the 3rd base side and it was plan to see the only way he can make a catch is if the ball is hit right at him. Much more important to get his fat I@* back on the bench, Prado in Left and someone with a decent glove at Short.

a minor deal so Wren can’t be ripped off too badly
after Reds got Hoover for Francisco, they came back for more.
I agree that Redmond should have been given a chance.
PS Braves were $23,800 under the 10 round draft allotment. god forbid if they went over by a few $ to sign a decent HS prospect from round31-40 and had to pay a small tax. anything to save a few $.
that’s why keeping Bourn is pointless. he’s as good as gone. no chance he stays here once a free agent.

You folks talk like trading is like trading baseball cards. Did you folks not read where they were looking for a stop gap.I am amazed you people did not want Jeter.Do the research,Janish will save more runs. A better hitter than Wilson and and a better fielder. Next time you go buy groceries and you would like to buy that steak but you only have the funds for Hamburger Helper, then maybe , just maybe you will understand a Braves GM(doesn’t matter who it is) can only do so much with owners like Liberty Media.

Janish adds some depth to a position the Braves are thin at. He can be a defensive replacement late in games, and get a few starts. Jose Reyes aint walking through that door.

These blogs have become so full with people relentlessly hating on every move that the Braves make, and on everything that Fredi Gonzalez and Frank Wren do or don’t do.
People who have put no thought into their comments at all post knee jerk reactions about this trade, which in reality is a very solid move. It’s like they just focus on a number- Janish’s batting average, of all things, and say “237!? This guy sucks!!” Janish is a solid defender and was most likely the best shortstop that was available for a song and dance- and available TODAY. Which is when the Braves needed to find a shortstop.
Redmond had very little chance of helping at the major league level this season, after which he becomes a free agent, so it’s really hard to understand anyone complaining about losing him. It opens a spot at AAA for a better, younger prospect. It’s a win all the way around

Dollar for dollar, Frank Wren has outperformed every other GM in the National League. He has done a superb job with the modest resources he’s been given over the past few years and in case all of his critics haven’t noticed, we’re sitting three games out of first place behind a very young, very iinexperienced Nationals club that has suddenly found themselves in the spotlight. It will be interesting to see how the Nats respond to the pressures of the pennant race in the second half and how they deal with the questions surrounding their use of their ace as his innings count creeps toward their presumed limit of 160. Regardless of how the Nats perform, the Braves find themselves in a great position, right on their heels. It’s hard to argue that the Braves aren’t one of the most balanced clubs in the league, and with a few upgrades to the rotation and possibly the bench or bullpen, they could easily become the team to beat in the National League.

Wren and his team deserve alot more credit for their successes and more respect from the fans. He took the reigns of this team when the farm system was wrung dry by a misguided attempt of his predecessor to take one last shot at the postseason, trading away 4 very talented prospects at once. Through trades and signings, he’s built the club back into a perennial contender His deals don’t always work out, but with the budget restrictions the team operates under, they have to be creative. Which is why I, for one, am truly excited to see what tricks the front office team has up their sleeves as we approach the trade deadline, and even more so in the offseason, when a few heavy contracts come off the books and allow the front office more flexibility in assembling the 2013 Braves.
But I’m sure no matter what deala Wren ends up making, he’ll be blasted and derided and second-guessed and there will be name-calling and general childishness from Braves fans, particularly from posters on this blog.
It’s kind of a bummer.

My biggest frustration comes from our ownership situation. I grew up during the Ted Turner era which went from the absolutely horrible to the best, so I guess I am a little spoiled. I understand why the braves made this trade, but I stand by the fact that if you are not gonna trade for any better than what you have then don’t make a trade at all. I dont blame Wren, I think he is a good baseball guy and does pretty god with the budget restraints we have. I am just ticked that we have those restraints.

The shortstop problem did not originate because Simmons went for that double; it occurred because of that head-first slide. Managers need to fine ALL players who slide that way. Jason Heyward and Martin Prado previously suffered long-term problems after injuring themselves on head-first slides and, years ago, Rafael Furcal dislocated his shoulder and missed half the season for the same reason.

Janish is not a Jack Wilson clone. Jack Wilson is now a tick above average defensively, but offers nothing at the plate. Janish is a truly elite defender with a +11.3 UZR, and has two useful offensive tools, he can walk and has a .154 iso so he has decent power. Sitting in the 8 hole for the next month he can actually be a useful piece, where as Redmond is a minor league FA after the season and apparently never was going to get a chance in Atlanta.

Sorry – I don’t see the point in trading for a light hitting shortstop when the Braves have a light hitting shortstop in their system who started the season with the big club. Maybe this new guy is a little better defensively but it’s not like he is that much better. I still think FG is playing favorites and Pastor is not ont one of FG’s favorites – thus he won’t play and will probably be sent back to the minors next week. Bad trade when one considers Redmond could have been packaged with other players to obtain a front-line pitcher or a good bat for the bench.
