Braves send Delgado to minors

Vivlamore reporting from Turner Field.

The Braves optioned right-hander Randall Delgado to Triple-A Gwinnett following Saturday’s game against the Mets. The move clears a spot for Ben Sheets, who will start Sunday’s series finale.

Delgado will pitch Monday for the G-Braves at Indianapolis. He will return to the Braves to pitch one of the double-header games against the Nationals Saturday. A new rule allows teams to add a 26th player to the roster for double-headers.

The move means left-hander Mike Minor will keep his spot in the rotation and will likely pitch Wednesday against the Giants. The Braves had to choose between Minor and Delgado to make room for Sheets as both youngsters have struggled this season.

“It was a tough decision between him and Minor,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “The last couple starts with Minor we felt there was some progress being made.”

Delgado is 4-9 with a 4.52 ERA in 16 starts this season. In 85-2/3 innings, he has allowed 83 hits and 46 runs (43 earned), eight home runs and 41 walks. He has struck out 69.

Minor, the Braves only lefty starter, is 5-6 with a 5.97 ERA in 16 starts. In 92 innings, he has allowed 91 hits, 67 runs (61 earned), 19 home runs and 40 walks. He has struck out 78.

The Braves also placed infielder Jack Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with a dislocated middle joint on his right small finger. The moves opens a roster spot for Paul Janish, acquired from the Reds Saturday. He will join the team Sunday.

I’m not sure what progress he’s shown.

Mike Minor’s last 2 starts
11.1 IP, 6 ER, 7BB, 8K, 4.76 ERA

Delgado’s last 2 starts
10 IP, 5 ER, 2BB, 8K, 4.5 ERA

The main difference I see is the walks. Minor got 2 wins and the Braves lost both Delgado games, but that’s mostly because they scored 7 runs in each of Minor’s games and scored 5 runs total in the Delgado games.

I knew it would be Delgado even though he is a better pitcher than Minor but Minor is a lefty and they think it is cool to have a lefty on the rotation but I can tell you this, he won’t be down for long and I pray they don’t trade him because he is going to be one hell of a pitcher when he matures a little, Sheets won’t last long but he will be with us the rest of the season because Wren doesn’t like to admit mistakes and he tells Fruti “just keep sending him out there”

They said that Joe Johnson’s contract could not be dealt. The new GM showed some gonads and did it. Well, possibly a different GM for the Braves could get some new faces in here. Boy, they make a good tease, but the Braves aren’t going anywhere. The best to Chipper in his last year. Hopefully, he will rest for a year and come back to help the club as the manager or at least a coach. He knows the game and evidently can communicate with the players.

Pesternicky, Pesternicky attempts to bunt with 2 strikes. He couldn’t hit a wiffleball, yet FG sends him up to bunt, have your brains and colon been transposed FG?

FG said the bunt sign was off after two strikes., The Rev did that on his own.

Good luck Sheets! This may be a great pick up guys, either that or it turns out to be a silly move. Time will tell. Kinda glad Delgado got the boot, he’s been terrible lately. Hope he gets some more experience and improves in Triple-A.

Not crazy about Minor and never really was either, he needs to learn a few more things obviously he’s not ready to dominate much of anything yet. I bet if they ever send Minor down he starts that “they might as well trade me” boo-hoo crap. That is the most annoying thing about him, he believes the team owes him a spot on the starting rotation when in reality he needs to earn it like everyone else in the history of the game has.

I decided to play some MLB 2K12 for Xbox 360 and just test out all the starting pitchers the Braves have against the Nationals on the hardest difficulty just to see what would happen and who pitched the best. Delgado got thumped every single game he pitched for me (even had a 15-5 loss). With someone like Huddy or Hanson pitching I almost never lose. Now I have a compulsive disorder where I have to check/change my pitcher before every game when I play online because they just randomly give you a starter and its Delgado a good bit of the time. Minor isn’t that bad on the game either, its possible to win with him if your a little lucky but Delgado is nearly impossible to get a W.

Oh and GO HEYWARD!!!!!!! My man comes thru again with a game winning hit and saves the day. Good thing they took out Tejada, I think he would’ve got to that ball no problem he’s very athletic, young, and nimble. Cedeno isn’t terrible but not the best either, Heyward got a bit lucky on that hit but I’ll take it all day long.

Its good to be on top, keep working hard and stay there J-Hey!!

You have a 22 year old kid that has a 4.52 ERA. Yea he struggles some, but he’s only had 1 or 2 TERRIBLE starts, he also will occasionally have a good/solid start. Month of May his ERA was 3.60, month of June his ERA was 4.30, his only start in June he went 6 innings and only gave up 3 runs.

You also have a 24 year old who has a 5.97 ERA. He struggles often and in his last 12 starts dating back to April 25 he has had TWO QUALITY STARTS!!! Month of May his ERA was 9.95, month of June his ERA was 4.60. He’s older than Delgado, he’s not as good as Delgado, he hasn’t pitched as well as Delgado, but whatta ya know MIKE MINOR GETS TO KEEP HIS SPOT and Delgado GETS SENT DOWN??????

Mike Minor is 2 plus years older than Delgado and has an ERA that’s a point and a half higher, but he’s the one that gets to keep his starting spot?? Ahahaha folks this is one of the many reasons why Fredi G needs to be fired. He never deserved this job in the first place he was NEVER a proven winner at any level, even his own players in Florida didn’t respect him. The faster Fredi G gets fired the better the Braves chances of making the playoffs become.

And Frank Wren better not trade Delgado or Teheran to bring in some dude like Garza or even some old guy like Dempster. This Braves team doesn’t have a chance of making a DEEP playoff run so we need to save our prospects so we can be a big time team in the future not trade them so we MIGHT make a wildcard spot in 2012….

Dlegado’s immaturity is his biggest problem and he needs to finish the year at G-Braves which will allow him to handle adversity in a better manor.

I sure hope Minor was kept in the bigs so he can be traded for Grienke. Otherwise, dumb move. Delgado hasn’t been great, but he’s been better than Minor. I don’t care which arm Minor throws with, his results have not been good.

Go ahead and put Minor, Delgado , and Hanson into the trade package. We sure as $ell are better off in our chances of winning without them.

Delgado is the guy is likely to be traded. The Braves can move Minor to the bullpen, for the rest of the year, just in case Venters is not back to where the Braves need him to be. And if Venters is okay, nothing wrong with have an arm in the pen.

I like Delgado, but Minor is our ONLY left handed starter, and he’s got more major league seasoning. I like the move.

You guys wanting to trade Hanson are crazy. Yesterday he only had a few balls hit really hard off him and if FG had someone playing left field that could run just a little bit 3 balls that fell in would have been easily caught keeping the Mets from scoring MANY more runs than SlowFoot drove in. They list him at 6′2″ and 235 on the new score board, but I think that weight if off by at least 10 lbs and more like 20lbs. I have loved him in the past, but he has put on too much weight to even swing the bat effectively this year, much less run a few steps to field fly balls. (Yes fly balls that would easily be caught even by Matt Diaz and not line drives.)

Let us hope that Jack Wilson stays on the DL till rosters expand. So our bench is now Pastornicky, Ross, Diaz, Hinske, Francisco. Very underwhelming, other thna Ross and Diaz (vs LHP). I am hoping for a trade or two to improve our bench, our rotation, AND our bullpen before 7/31. How about Minor, Pastornicky, and Francisco for Wandy Rod, Lyon, and Lowrie (if his ankle is OK?)?

Wrong choice. Delgado is the better pitcher this year. It will work itself out but at what cost in terms of W/L?

Janish is a good pickup. I found it somewhat ironic that Pastornicky was the late inning defensive replacement at SS.

Some of you guys may be right – the Braves may be showcasing Minor as trade bait for Greinke.

Hanson is 10-5 and has some of the best stuff in the national league. A good fast ball (not great) a great breaking ball and a good change-up. His consistency is what is holding him back. He will pitch great one night, and walk 6-8 guys on his next start and won’t get out of the 3rd inning. But hey – if it were easy, we would all do it. Hanson is good enough to wait and see how he develops. Most teams would jump out of their shoes to get him. But the Braves are smart to keep him.

FG and FW banging their heads trying to get a starter up there worth a crap and they have Medlen in the pen pitching a few innings a week. Just goes to show that these clowns have a mold they look for…and if a pitcher doesn’t fit in that mold, they are in the pen. Those two clowns can’t possibly say Medlen is better suited for the bullpen more so than either Minor or Delgado. What a joke they both are. Why not move Medlen into the rotation and pick up a solid bullpen guy or utility IF?

[...] However, pitcher Randall Delgado was optioned back to Gwinnett from Atlanta in Saturday’s rost… He reportedly will start Monday for Gwinnett. [...]
