Braves quotes after Saturday’s win over Mets

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On three two-out singles in eighth

“Some good at-bats. Even to start that inning with [Brian McCann and Dan Uggla]. Then they get two quick outs after [Tyler] Pastornicky couldn’t get the bunt down and [Juan] Francisco struck out. What a game to win. We go ahead, they come back. They have a bunch of guys on the offensive part of it who just don’t give at-bats away. They keep sticking their nose in there and keep battling. Our bullpen did a terrific job only giving up one run. A lot of good things. A lot of positive stuff in today’s game. Keep it rolling.”

On Tommy Hanson’s performance

“You feel pretty good. He goes out in the sixth inning and gets the first guy out. They got three straight hits after that. We just couldn’t get him a win. A good overall team win.”

On success against R.A. Dickey twice this season

“He gave up some runs, but I don’t know if we hit the ball particularly hard against him. That’s alright. In the scorebook they count as hits. The first two hits he gave up were an infield single to [Jason] Heyward and [McCann] blooped one in there. We battled him. Got him out of there and got to there bullpen.”

On Pastornicky’s two-strike bunt attempt, did you second-guess yourself at all after that?

“[The bunt sign] was taken off. He went on his own there.”

Freddie Freeman seems to be heating up again

“I think the whole top of the order, you’ve [Michael] Bourn, [Martin] Prado, Jason [Heyward], Chipper, Freeman, you see [McCann] is starting to come to life. That’s a pretty good top six guys there. Dan [Uggla] got a knock. If we get all those guys firing on all cylinders, it’s a pretty long lineup you have to get yourself through.”

On Braves not giving away at-bats

“I can count on one hand the number of times you sit in the dugout and you felt frustrated that we are giving at-bats away. Other than that, you feel like these guys are giving you good at-bats.”

On reversed call in outfield, on ball initially ruled a flyball out

“They got it right. I haven’t seen it but the guys who came out of the dugout said they got it right. It surprised me when I came out to argue, because I thought I saw the ball come up along with the sod, and as soon as I came out [the umpires] stopped the play and got together. Somebody saw something that wasn’t the out call. If they got together this quickly, I assume they are going to change it. If they don’t change it we are in deep trouble. [Then] maybe it’s me [thrown] out of the game and [Mets manager Terry] Collins stays in. At the end of the night, it’s get the play right. They did. I’m glad they got together on their own and got it right.”

**JASON HEYWARD

On the comeback win

“We’ve got some guys getting hot in here. We’re going to battle you the whole nine, and it’s great to get a team win like that.”

On the eighth inning, three straight two-out singles, his and Prado’s opposite-field hits….

“Yeah, not trying to do too much. I don’t think any of us did. Pretty good inning, started with B-Mac getting on with the walk. And picking up those runs with two outs is huge. Getting them off a closer [Parnell] is also big, and giving our closer the ball with the lead in the ninth is awesome.”

Your closer is pretty good in those spots, huh? (laughter)

“Yeah, he is. That’s why it’s awesome to give him the ball in the ninth inning like that, and not having to waste him in a tie game.”

Did you guys feel like you could come back when down two runs after seven?

“Shoot, it’s not over till it’s over. This group as a whole, we’ve kind of been through enough together to understand that much. There are a number of times I can name you, on the road and at home. Everybody’s mind was in it, just mentally tough, hanging in there. Not trying to do too much at the plate, just do whatever you could to prolong the inning, prolong the game.”

On the win

“Just kind of gives you a little more momentum. We didn’t play the best, we felt, last night. I would say you didn’t feel like you deserved to win last night, but today was more deserved.”

On the fly ball ruling reversed from catch to a Heyward single

“I saw it down from where I was. I saw him not catch it. That’s all I saw.”

** MICHAEL BOURN

On the comeback

“We put a string of good at-bats together. We didn’t give up. We kept fighting. We fought the whole game. We strung it out and J-Hey came up with the last hit and gave us the lead. Man, that’s a tough team over there. People don’t give them credit, but I do. Every time we face them we’re in a dog fight. We’ll take the lead, they’ll come back and tie it. We’ll take the lead again, they’ll come back and tie it again. Then they took the lead. Then we were able to cap it off and bring Craig in, and he shut the game down and we got the W.”

On keeping heads up after blowing two leads

“The thing is, you’ve got to play all nine innings. It’s a baseball game. You can be down six, you can be up six and give up the lead. You can’t relax at that time. It’s easy to relax and think the game’s over when you’re up or down. But you’ve got to continue to fight, either way.”

**TOMMY HANSON

“Definitely exciting toward the end of the game. Guys came up huge, especially our offense.”

On guys picking him up today

“That’s great. That’s going to happen sometime and it’s a good feeling knowing that you never gave up there, we kept fighting and we got the win. That was a big win for our team.”

On his performance

“I just didn’t feel like I could ever get in a groove. I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff today and my command was shaky. There were times when I felt good and confident and I was doing well, and other times I just wasn’t throwing it where I wanted it to go.”

**CHIPPER JONES

On eighth-inning rally, three consecutive 2-out RBI singles

“Awesome. That guy [Bobby Parnell] throws really hard, and we threw up some good at-bats against him. Mikey Bourn, and then Prado and J-Hey, found holes. I thought we swung the bats pretty good today off of Dickey, scored some runs off him and probably could have had one or two more.

“We had trouble getting out the middle and bottom of their lineup all day. They kept tacking on, but you just kind of had a feeling that whoever had last at-bat in that game was going to win it. Fortunately we had it, and Kimmy came in and sealed the deal.”

On coming back from two down after seven innings, doesn’t happen often with any team

“No, but these guys have a little swag right now. Guys are playing good. We know we’ve got us a little winning streak going here, the guys are fighting and scratching and clawing to keep it going. Once we got the first two guys on there in the eighth, that’s when you start to get a good feeling. Nobody wants to make the third out … like me.”

Hitting streak snapped at 14 games, but winning streak extended to six

“Hitting streaks come and go. It was fun while it lasted. I got robbed there in the first [inning], but it is what it is. I’ll take the W and a six-game winning streak over a hitting streak.”

Is it just me, or has Craig Kimbrel become the best closer in the NL? I mean, if we threw out his numbers from non-save situations, his ERA would be lower than Jonathan Papelbon’s IQ…

How happy I was to pull up the MLB app on my phone after the car show and see that the Braves actually won this game? So happy I startled my husband with my yelp!

We put it all together again and against the right team. Let’s keep winning series and in a month if we’re still close we should have everyone back to complete our run. Now that Prado and J- Hey and Freeman and yes, I still believe in Uggla too. Do what’s necessary and don’t forget that key hit by Hinski! Chipper, start another run…you are our heart!

The sooner McDowell fixes Hanson’s delivery the sooner he becomes a more reliable pitcher. The hitters can see his hand. They can see what pitch he’s throwing. On my HD television I can tell what Hanson is about to throw based on his finger placement and the seams of the ball. From 60′ 6″ he is just telegraphing his pitches.

Two really entertaining games, both with the correct outcome. I would like to see better starting pitching.

Sheets tomorrow–good luck Ben.

Hinske” thrown out at home, McCann cannot go to third on a ball hit to the wall, It’s unbelievable that Constanza and Durango are not used as pinch runners. Not having any speed on the bench will kill a lot of rallies.

I hate Tommy Hanson’s fastball, it is the worst in the majors. I remember when his fastball was 94 to 95, what the heck happened to him ? He pitches so boring, it takes forever for him to pitch to the mound. Trade Tommy Hanson before his contract is up lol ..

I told my brother after that Heyward 2-run single back off Gio Gonzalez about a month ago that he was going to take flight. That AB reminded me of his GW hit today. Got a pitch out away and didn’t try to pull he took it the other away and it won us the game again. Heyward pulled off everything last year and to see him going oppo is an indication he’s heading in the right direction. Great W

Freeman must be related to the score keeper to get a hit when the second baseman throws it wild to first base when he would of been out by a least a step. Good to see him come through with two nice hits after the gift. He is not the first one to get a hit when it should of been a error from the Brave’s scorer. These are big league players they are supossed to make plays like this.

Now that the Braves have traded for another shortstop, this post is already outdated, but I was unable to put it online sooner. After the way they have mismanaged the disabled list all year and mangled not calling up a shortstop for five days after Simmons’ injury, I expected this from Wren or Gonzalez:

“In a cost-cutting move, we have decided to release all but 8 position players and two pitchers. After reviewing the early days of the Braves, we discovered that they played several seasons with only two pitchers carrying the bulk of the work. We may add an additional pitcher by August. In addition, we are giving Chipper Jones the day off tomorrow. We realize that having a vacant position in the lineup will result in an automatic out, but it’s not that much different from starting Dan Uggla.”

Good to see that even without our talented shortstop right now, and without Chipper getting a hit — we still pulled it out. Great game. I’ll give the Mets this: they battle you to the end. But then so do we. Isn’t Kimbrel magnificent? Love it when he comes on, and circles the mound after a strikeout.
Great win.

Thank GOODNESS that Tejada got benched after Collins got ejected. No way Collins would have benched him, he’s hitting too good this year. That little series of events set the table for Heyward to win the game with his 8th inning hit. I know in my mind Tejada would’ve got to that ball all day long, he’s really nimble and fast out there.

Glad things worked in our favor and we got Cedeno because after he couldn’t make that play he struck out in the 9th too! He did us 2 favors tonight, thanks Cedeno. I really hope Heyward keeps this up I love watching this guy play the game when he’s healthy. Ever since I first heard of him in 2007 he quickly became my favorite player to watch and since 2010 he’s been my favorite in MLB. Last year I was so unsure of everything and if he was really going to make it to be the Superstar everyone thought he would be but thankfully he’s back on track and making a huge difference every game. WTG J-HEY, you are the man! I’d take him every day over Bryce Harper thats how much I believe in Jason Heyward.

Since giving up that HR to Young on June 28th, Kimbrel has pitched 6 2/3 innings (including the All Star Game), given up 1 hit, zero walks and struck out 16.

Those are video game stats. Ridiculous.

Why do they even interview Fredi the Freeloader? “You feel pretty good” about another poor Hanson performance had to be one of Fredi the Freeloader’s best nonsense quotes. Does Fredi even know what’s going on in the games?

@ Teddy B,
Heyward will be a very good player. His tools tell you that if healthy he will put up big numbers. I still think his biggest problem last season was the injury. As for being a Superstar, maybe. He never said he was the next great Superstar, everyone else was saying it.

And average start for the old Sheets would be great but we might be expecting too much too soon from him. If he returns to the old Sheets we will be looking good if he doesn’t it probably will cost us a game or two to find out but it is worth a try because of the upside.
