I play a mean SS might need to head down to Turner -Anyone seen my glove ?
July 12th, 20127:31 pm
Fredi (as usual) so full o’crap..Wren will tell you who & when.
Scutaro or Lowrie or Carroll seem like the trade options out there.
i prefer Lowrie, he could play 3B next year.
July 12th, 20127:37 pm
How about Houston solving both our problems? Wandy Rodriquez and Lowrie for Pastornicky, Terdo, and either Minor or Delgado.
July 12th, 20127:38 pm
Will the Braves fold again? Anyone remember Chipper saying they played the best they could after a crucial error in the World Series that helped us lose and berating the fans?! I do!
Yes Way José
July 12th, 20127:42 pm
Fredi really doesn’t know. We all know it’ll be Wren’s call.
July 12th, 20127:44 pm
Whenever I see what Fredi G. has to say I’m always sure it’s going to be laced with crap….and true to form it was….
July 12th, 20127:46 pm
Fold again? They have to get somewhere before they fold. This team is not going anywhere.
July 12th, 20127:47 pm
“We’ve got a couple options in Triple-A that we could call up. We are going to keep weighing those options.”
Translation: We have a pile of doodoo in AAA and Jack Wilson is starting so we need to do something ASAP.
July 12th, 20127:50 pm
Do they really need to go trade for someone? Unless there is a good utility guy out there, I think they can make due with Wilson and Pastor until Simmons comes back in 1-2 months
Fredi also told Parish he would be back this year. Ooop’s better check with the boss first.
Jasons Shrinking Waist
July 12th, 20127:59 pm
Trade for starting pitcher will happen by Sunday
July 12th, 20128:01 pm
Fredi said there were “a couple” of options at AAA? Who’s there besides the Rev?
July 12th, 20128:02 pm
The real issue facing the Braves is ownership not a replacement shortstop. Until Liberty leaves town the Braves have no chance to compete for a title.
July 12th, 20128:05 pm
No Problem the Braves are loaded at shortstop. Just plug in Escobar or Andrus. Ya, ya, I know, we are down to Jack Wilson (.174) and the failed Pastor. Way to manage the roster! World Series, here we come!
July 12th, 20128:06 pm
With Jack Wilson playing shortstop, the Braves have no chance of going anywhere. If this is the Braves option, they are kidding themselves.
Chris from the Rock
July 12th, 20128:09 pm
I hear Miguel Tejada is available.
July 12th, 20128:21 pm
I’ve never supported the Braves since, such arrogance from multi-millionaires!
July 12th, 20128:27 pm
I wonder how many pitchers have a higher batting average than Jack Wilson?
July 12th, 20128:35 pm
Lance Frederick Zawadzki starting at SS tonight for Gwinnett. Has 35 AB’s in the bigs. This may be the other choice Fredi mentioned at AAA. Horrible hitter, must be a better fielder.
July 12th, 20128:37 pm
No, not Wilson . I’m not sure what position he can play. We know he can’t hit.
July 12th, 20128:55 pm
Not having a decent backup shortstop will cost us any chance of making the playoffs, need to trade for a good minor league S.S. as Simmons is going to be out for awhile and we cannot afford to try and get by with Wilson or Pastornicky.
Mark (another one)
July 12th, 20128:58 pm
The decision doesn’t need to be made until tomorrow. If Wren makes a trade, there will have been no reason to call up anyone. If he doesn’t, the drive from AAA is pretty short.
Josh Wilson and Drew Sutton are at Gwinnett, so Pastornicky is not the only option. I’m not sure about Gotay and his experience at SS but he has major league infield experience and was brought in for insurance.
July 12th, 20129:00 pm
According to Twitter the Braves picked up SS Terry Tiffee has been picked up at AAA.
July 12th, 20129:11 pm
It is ridiculous that they have waited so long to announce what they are doing at SS… shows that they have no idea what they are doing running this club.
NO MORE FREDI
July 12th, 20129:14 pm
Fredi is the king of crap. Can’t wait till he is out of here. I bet he practiced tipping his cap in the mirror during the all star break.
abc's of baseball
July 12th, 20129:26 pm
“wear out because we might have to ride you for a while”
July 12th, 20129:30 pm
Best thing we can hope for is for Wilson to go 0 for 4 Friday, if he gets a hit or two we will be stuck with him until Simmons returns
July 12th, 20129:31 pm
I think Drew Sutton plays for Pirates
July 12th, 20129:41 pm
Drew Sutton is no longer a Braves and Terry Tiffee hasn’t had an at-bat in the bigs in 4 years. Also, he plays 1st, 3rd, and LF….not SS.
July 12th, 20129:42 pm
July 12th, 2012
If true, just another Dumpster dig, typical Wren
July 12th, 20129:43 pm
Just tip your cap and move on. Keep running Jack Wilson out there. I would like to believe the back of Jack’s bubble gum card but there’s not much there.
July 12th, 20129:45 pm
Mayhbe Edgar Renteria would come out of retirement
July 12th, 20129:47 pm
It is not as if they need someone for the rest of the season. Pastornicky/Wilson can fill in for 5 weeks. This is not a panic situation. No need to overpay for a short term fix.
July 12th, 20129:52 pm
You could be Wren’s assistant
July 12th, 20129:53 pm
I say just ride it out and play with what you got. Stop whinning about what you do not have. They are trying to decide who to get to play for them. When they need to be thinking of who can I get to stay with us. I know it will not be CF Bourne. I am a braves fan but we all can say bye to him. Lets ride it out for SS Simons. Quit whininning!!
July 12th, 201210:00 pm
We all know the braves they will go out and spend a ton of money fo a guy for just one year. We will never get back to a champion ship team. The management stinks. Well maybe Chipper can be some type of manager for the Braves. Man, maybe even the Coach.
July 12th, 201210:08 pm
Jack Wilson in the lineup gives us two instant outs in the 8, 9 slots. Not good starting a game with 21 outs to play. And to be honest, I find his defense merely OK at best.
These comments are garbage. Quit being so negative. Go Braves
July 12th, 201210:13 pm
pls don’t trade for a SS…please…you need a SP!!!!
July 12th, 201210:41 pm
The last time we were in the playoffs (2010) our 2nd baseman committed more errors than 22 yr old SS Simmons has in 33 games. It only took him 2 games to manage that feat.
No teams stands a reasonable chance to make it to the postseason by having a poor interior defense on the diamond (especially SS). As far as the comments being too negative regarding Jack Wilson &/or Pastornicky holding the fort down til Andrelton returns…either you weren’t a Braves fan then, or didn’t watch the Giants series.
Trade for a SS that can hold down the fort now, replace Jack Wilson on the roster when Andrelton returns, and become our utility infielder for 2013. There is one in particular that made his MLB debut as a Red, Jeff Keppinger, that has played every IF position except for C, who rakes with the stick, is one of the top 10 toughest to strikeout, & playing right now for the Tampa Rays. Come on Frank, he is a Georgia boy who grew up pullig for the Tomahawks of Hotlanta!
July 12th, 201210:55 pm
When are these idiot players going to realize that you don’t slide head first? It’s an easy
way to get injured–but it’s like today’s players insist on being stupid.
July 12th, 201211:06 pm
Question: How many posts will it take for someone to recommend not making hustle plays in the future.
July 12th, 201211:34 pm
How bout Joe Shlabotnik?
July 12th, 201211:42 pm
Terry Tiffee AAA hit/thr..S/R has 3 hrs and 345ba this year. His 6′2 200 lbs.Last played in ML 4 years ago. Plays 3b,ss, 1st, …Maybe a star in waiting.
July 12th, 201211:44 pm
Braves got Wilson to help Rev’s out! Now Rev’s gone so should Wilson be gone.
July 12th, 201211:49 pm
Fredi told Wilson to rest up we may have to ride you a while..Hell I thought Wilson had been resting all year!
July 12th, 201211:50 pm
Andres Thomas should be coming into his own about now. Man, did we ever have some ham fisted SSs over the years. The Rev really brings back memories, shades of Pat Rocket.
Barry R Doepp
July 13th, 201212:07 am
I heard that there is a good sound arm who plays a mean shortstop name of Brett Stafford who presently works @ Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah,Ga. that could fill the teams void at the shortstop position temporarily until Andrelton Simmons is healed and ready to take the position back! Brett is a proven .230 Batting average and has an excellent fielding percentage.
July 13th, 201212:10 am
We do need a SP more than anything, but it would be nice to have an upgrade over Wilson. Not just to start now, but be a much better all around backup when Simmons is back (bat off the bench especially). I love Willie Bloomquist, though he might cost a lot. As of now, the Rockies are asking the moon for Scutaro, and none of the other options seem too exciting for various reasons.
July 13th, 201212:30 am
Is Pastornicky a leper now? Did he really play that poorly when he was up?
July 13th, 201212:32 am
Jeff. Blauser. Even if he can’t do it on the field anymore, he will entertain off of it.
July 13th, 201212:57 am
Can Prado play short? Dude can play everywhere else.
Can’t play with old Jack. We missed the playoffs by one stinking game.
Wins in July count just as much as they do in September.
July 13th, 20121:52 am
Maybe Frank and Fredi are trying to do the same thing to ole Rev as they did to Jurrjens….. call upon everyone else until they really needed him and he comes up and has showed that he belongs again!!! Hopefully the Rev has earned some patience and the only thing that was wrong with his fielding in the first place was he shuffled his feet too much when making a throw/ getting in position to field the ball…. I’msure some nerves have rattled away from him by now, bring him back up plug him in the lineup and lets beat the Muts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
July 13th, 20122:35 am
Pastornicky will be gone before Simmons gets back, he’ll be part of the Greinke package. We just need a better option than Jack Wilson.
Around The Horn
July 13th, 20124:10 am
It’s scary to read that Fredi’s “kicking the decision around.”
How much confidence can we have that a good end is coming from this?
Thankfully however, I don’t believe Fredi is the ultimate decision maker — from what we’ve seen in the past. John and Frank are.
Can Of Corn
July 13th, 20124:23 am
I like the energy Pastornicky brings to the Braves, and I like his bat. He’s a more than suitable fill-in for six weeks.
I don’t like trading a prospect for a six week rental, especially if it’s trading someone like Joey.
Come on Frank, have some common sense in this matter!
July 13th, 20124:42 am
Did you notice too, that Fredi’s saying NOTHING again, while he’s saying something?
Fredi’s most definitely a “NOTHING SPEAKER.”
He’s certainly not like E. F. Hutton. You remember the slogan: “When E. F. Hutton talks, people listen.”
It’s just the opposite with Fredi: When Fredi talks, people tune out.
“Oh, it’s just FREDI-SPEAK again, nothing meaningful is about to be said.”
July 13th, 20125:38 am
I love the comments complaining about picking up Tiffee. Look you morons, just because a baseball team acquires someone doesn’t mean they are ever going to play for that team in the major leagues. Sometimes you just need a warm body to fill out a AA or AAA roster. So stop whining about picking up Terry Tiffee to fill a spot in the minors.
July 13th, 20126:10 am
@Lee May, I agree, let’s get Brandon Lyon while we are at it. Pastor, Minor, Francisco for Lyon, Wandy Rod, and Lowrie.
wliiy g hate liberty media,i
July 13th, 20126:16 am
look this team has the worst owners sitting in colorado ive said the best thing is for the board of libertymedia needs to die in a plane crash so someone that cares about the braves until then we will always be losers . but mark cuban is only a couple of states away and he would get a shortstop that can field and hit he would get a left fielder that can hit and prado needs to be in infield prado is 3rd baseman in 2013 this team has won nothing in how many years?
July 13th, 20126:21 am
why?because stinking bud selig agreed to give the braves to liberty media.i believe these jack asses are paying braves back for all the years we crushed the colorado rockies in the 90’s.the braves will win againwhen they get ownership that cares., and will spend a few millions to get players that can pitch and field and hit.
July 13th, 20126:26 am
until then all we have is our keyboards to vent and cuss and say gee if only someone would just buy the braves so we can get to playoffs and win a ws once every 50 yrs or lets be greedy not 1,not2, not3, not4, not5,but 6or7.
July 13th, 20126:29 am
also freddie gonzales wild adventures is better than six flags
July 13th, 20126:37 am
look ozzie smith still does back flips on pepsi commercials go get him frank i will pay to see back flip st his age and he can hit and field give him a contract to end if yearand we will win it all if chipper doesnt break a toe nail or somethjng , chipper just get out of the wayy of line drives .
July 13th, 20126:41 am
how bout not playing with a SS. worth a shot.
July 13th, 20126:42 am
frank wren quit , freddie gonzales quit ., john scherhlotz slap bud selig and tell him to order liberty media to sell the braves to arthur blank or mark cuban.
July 13th, 20126:46 am
also DAVE O’BRIEN, you are an excellent writer keep up the good work.
July 13th, 20126:57 am
To say that Pastornicky can’t handle the job until Simmons is healthy is ridiculous. The fact is that the team’s record with Pastornicky was 28-24 entering June. Since then we are 18-15, a virtual dead-heat. Bring up Pastornicky and look for help where we really need it – pitching (starter and a dependable reliever) and someone to spot start at 3B or LF (Diaz and Fransisco are horrible options for Chipper’s off days).
July 13th, 20126:59 am
The fact that the Braves haven’t brought up Pastor from G-Braves just goes to show the mind set of Frank Wren (Pastor was to go down to improve skills and versatility), now the chance is here and we are talking about a trade to fill a need for 4 weeks, This Is A Waste, but then thats what Frank W. is good at. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Bob the Blogger
July 13th, 20127:41 am
Having Wilson in the lineup is like having two pitchers. I would like to see a replacement for him, but if the Braves just promote Pastornicky, we’re exactly the same as before Simmons was called up. Hopefully, he’s put in some hard work with the coaches on his defense at AAA over the last six weeks.
July 13th, 20127:47 am
I like the Lawrie Idea, especlly the part abut replacing Chipper next year and it wouldn’t bother me to see both Minor AND Delgado go elsewhere. They are clearly not quite ready for the prime time.
Re: Fredi Gonzalez: Has anyone ever seen Fredi and Bobby Cox at the same time?

yes pastornicky was that bad brutal horrible however you wanna say it no more pastornicky please!!!!!!!
July 13th, 20128:41 am
Blog is full of negative crap today. We are in second place people…..See how things look after these games w/ the Mutts. Faith my friends, Faith.
Great, Jack Wilson
July 13th, 20128:47 am
His 2′ of range will be great at SS. He looked horrible out there the last time I saw him play SS. He’s too damn old and slow to play SS. Do the obvious thing and call up Pastor until Simmons is ready.
July 13th, 20129:13 am
Lots of great trade suggestions here, but what makes all of you think that other teams are just sitting there waiting to trade their players away for very little just to help out the Braves?
And just a word on the comments about the head first slide…first, sliding is an instinctive play, which is the reason some players just do it both ways, and second, over time, there are also quite a few injuries from feet first slides, too. Which would you rather have, a broken little finger or broken ankle? The comparison is 4 weeks out vs a lost season.
July 13th, 20129:19 am
I bet not many remember Andres Thomas.
July 13th, 20129:20 am
Maybe they can try out Terry Pendleton over at short for a few games.. I wonder if he can find his glove..
Part Time Fan
July 13th, 20129:29 am
I agree with Spartygw–Prado is the man! Would like to hear what some of you frustrated managers think about using him to fill in at SS.

Is this the kiddie blog? Some of the most asinine things I’ve ever read..

July 13th, 20129:43 am
My fondest memory of Andres Thomas was the brawl betweem the Braves and the Reds that started after Thomas was HBP. I think Bill Gullickson was the pitcher, and Thomas connected a punch to his forehead that nearly spun him around.

look unless this team gets someone that does not make errors at short all the time with young pitchets errors make them mske more mistakes pastornicky is notthe answer.yall gavr away elvis sndrus for nothing get someone wren chippers last year needs to be a world series you idiot
July 13th, 201210:20 am
I think everyone needs to just calm down. It’s only a month or a little more Pastronicky and Wilson can fill in. If we trade for a SS like Lowrie then what happens you keep Simmons on the bench as a backup when he is clearly a starter? Do bench Lowrie or Scutaro who are both having good years. No need to panic people. These guys are doing just fine we need to worry about pitching depth that should be our concern. I am really interested in seeing what Sheets does on Sunday.
July 13th, 201210:25 am
Good grief people. Calm down.
We started the season in worse shape at SS, with no way of knowing what we would get out of Pastornicky (who played well considering it was his first go round). Why trade propsects for an aging vet rental who is not much better offensively and a significant amount worse defensively than Wilson?
The reality is we were actually FEWER games out when Simmons came on board, and we are only slightly better overall record wise with him 18-15) than without him (46-39). That difference amounts to a WHOPPING one game difference over a full season when you take those winning percentages and factor it out over 162 games.
One GAME people! Over 4 weeks it means less than a quarter game difference. I know last year one game made a huge difference, but losing Andrelton for 4 weeks does not signal a need for a replacement SS any more than the state we were in at the beginning of the year. Also remember that Chipper wasn’t healthy when Pastornicky was out there, and McCann and Heyward were stinking it up offensively and both have turned it around recently. In other words, Simmons has had more help so that extra 1 WIN has many factors.
Let’s face it, Andrelton did provide a spark and was rock solid in the field, but our real issue was NOT at the SS position even when Pastornicky was there. Put Pastornicky or Wilson back out there be doen with it and move on to our real needs … such as figuring out the bullpen and getting some consistent starting pitching.
We can survive until Andrelton gets back if we can figure out how to fix our true problem areas, neither of which are at SS.
July 13th, 201210:35 am
THE RIGHT THING
Frank, do the right thing and the wise thing:
Call Pastornicky up!
July 13th, 201210:41 am
It’s obvious that Frank isn’t going to go after Pepe Frias and Len Barker, as I suggested earlier. So, let’s not overlook another option that no one has mentioned this morning: move Chipper back to shortstop for a few weeks, and slide Prado in at third base. Or do the Chipper-worshippers here agree that he lacks the range to play SS at this point? Maybe we should look into signing the Henry Grady statue to a short-term contract at SS. (Yes, I acknowledge Sonny Clusters for originally suggesting the statue as an option at third base.)
Prado at shortstop, anyone?
July 13th, 201210:42 am
Is Jeff Blauser still out there? Hey, it would beat Jack Wilson….heck Gretchen Wilson would be better than Jack! I’m sure the ultimate “Yes Man” Fredi Gonzalez will come up with something. Hey Fredi. Wren just yelled for you to “Jump Boy!”
July 13th, 201210:56 am
I have been practicing and am ready to go!

July 13th, 201211:03 am
My brother was my shortstop on the church softball team I coached 15 years ago. He can still run a little and has good range. Just a thought.
July 13th, 201211:43 am
good grief calm down i am calm look.this team hasnt won crap in 6 yrs hadnt won a ws in17 yrs if this team does not make a trade to get a ss and a srarting pitcher because ben sheets will get bomed sunday he gavee up all those runs in 6 innings wow wren has struck again look they are 4 back and tjey get dickey and santana this weekend next week they get lincecum and cain and the mvp comes milkey cabrea who the braves gave up on nodamn wonder you have only won 1 damn 2ws in the history of this pathetic franchise
July 13th, 201211:45 am
yankees vs braves ws we can only hope
July 13th, 201212:09 pm
Julio Lugo would be even cheaper than last time!!
Simmons is the real deal and could/should be at SS for a decade, fluke injury, he will be fine in time.
Just don’t go dumb again Mr. Wren and make a lopsided Band Aid trade. If management is serious ( I often wonder.. post Ted Turner days) make a deal that includes a decent starting pitcher and a ss who can field. Would be great to find a right handed bat (of) with some pop but filling 3 needs is a pipe dream I know.
July 13th, 201212:13 pm
John Kruk NOW has more range than Miguel Tejada.
July 13th, 201212:15 pm
Terry Tiffee was drafted in the 26th round of the 1999 draft. He is 33 years old, Case closed.

July 13th, 201212:32 pm
It seems like every day we get some idiot on this blot that thinks Prado can play SS, he probably could but he wouldn’t be as good at it as Pastor or myself for that matter, I wish ya’ll would get that through your heads.
