Braves undecided about shortstop following injury to Simmons

Vivlamore reporting from Turner Field.

The Braves did not make a roster move to replace injured rookie shortstop Andrelton Simmons Thursday. A move will likely be made Friday, before the Braves take on the Mets, as the team was still weighing its options Thursday.

“We are still kicking it around,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We’ve got a couple options in Triple-A that we could call up. We are going to keep weighing those options.”

Tyler Pastornicky, who began the season as the starting shortstop before Simmons was called up from Double-A, is currently playing at Triple-A Gwinnett. He is hitting .264 with 20 RBIs in 36 games. A trade is also a possibility.

“I think we are looking right now,” Gonzalez said. “I spoke to [general manager] Frank [Wren] twice a day every day during the break. He is looking out there [at possible trades], seeing who is available. There is some potential there also.”

Simmons was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after breaking his right hand on a head-first slide into second base against the Phillies in the final game before the All-Star break. The non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal (pinkie finger) will be in a cast for four weeks before Simmons is re-examined to determine the next course of actions. He was in a gray cast Thursday.

Simmons has a .296 average with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 33 games since being called up from Double-A Mississippi and making his major-league debut on June 2. He won NL rookie of the month for June, leading all league rookies in batting average (.333), on-base percentage (.365) and hits (30).

“The big kick in the stomach was Sunday losing [Andrelton] Simmons,” Gonzalez said. “It happens to everybody, everybody has injuries through the course of the year. I’ve always said that the teams that can survive those injuries are going to be there at the end. We’ll just keep plugging away.”

Jack Wilson will likely start Friday, Gonzalez said.

“I told him in Philadelphia Sunday after the game, I said ‘Rest up these next four days. I don’t want you going to Six Flags or any of those places and wear out because we might have to ride you for a while,’” Gonzalez said.

Not having a decent backup shortstop will cost us any chance of making the playoffs, need to trade for a good minor league S.S. as Simmons is going to be out for awhile and we cannot afford to try and get by with Wilson or Pastornicky.

The decision doesn’t need to be made until tomorrow. If Wren makes a trade, there will have been no reason to call up anyone. If he doesn’t, the drive from AAA is pretty short.

Josh Wilson and Drew Sutton are at Gwinnett, so Pastornicky is not the only option. I’m not sure about Gotay and his experience at SS but he has major league infield experience and was brought in for insurance.

The last time we were in the playoffs (2010) our 2nd baseman committed more errors than 22 yr old SS Simmons has in 33 games. It only took him 2 games to manage that feat.

No teams stands a reasonable chance to make it to the postseason by having a poor interior defense on the diamond (especially SS). As far as the comments being too negative regarding Jack Wilson &/or Pastornicky holding the fort down til Andrelton returns…either you weren’t a Braves fan then, or didn’t watch the Giants series.

Trade for a SS that can hold down the fort now, replace Jack Wilson on the roster when Andrelton returns, and become our utility infielder for 2013. There is one in particular that made his MLB debut as a Red, Jeff Keppinger, that has played every IF position except for C, who rakes with the stick, is one of the top 10 toughest to strikeout, & playing right now for the Tampa Rays. Come on Frank, he is a Georgia boy who grew up pullig for the Tomahawks of Hotlanta!

I heard that there is a good sound arm who plays a mean shortstop name of Brett Stafford who presently works @ Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah,Ga. that could fill the teams void at the shortstop position temporarily until Andrelton Simmons is healed and ready to take the position back! Brett is a proven .230 Batting average and has an excellent fielding percentage.

We do need a SP more than anything, but it would be nice to have an upgrade over Wilson. Not just to start now, but be a much better all around backup when Simmons is back (bat off the bench especially). I love Willie Bloomquist, though he might cost a lot. As of now, the Rockies are asking the moon for Scutaro, and none of the other options seem too exciting for various reasons.

To say that Pastornicky can’t handle the job until Simmons is healthy is ridiculous. The fact is that the team’s record with Pastornicky was 28-24 entering June. Since then we are 18-15, a virtual dead-heat. Bring up Pastornicky and look for help where we really need it – pitching (starter and a dependable reliever) and someone to spot start at 3B or LF (Diaz and Fransisco are horrible options for Chipper’s off days).

Lots of great trade suggestions here, but what makes all of you think that other teams are just sitting there waiting to trade their players away for very little just to help out the Braves?
And just a word on the comments about the head first slide…first, sliding is an instinctive play, which is the reason some players just do it both ways, and second, over time, there are also quite a few injuries from feet first slides, too. Which would you rather have, a broken little finger or broken ankle? The comparison is 4 weeks out vs a lost season.

I think everyone needs to just calm down. It’s only a month or a little more Pastronicky and Wilson can fill in. If we trade for a SS like Lowrie then what happens you keep Simmons on the bench as a backup when he is clearly a starter? Do bench Lowrie or Scutaro who are both having good years. No need to panic people. These guys are doing just fine we need to worry about pitching depth that should be our concern. I am really interested in seeing what Sheets does on Sunday.

Steve

July 13th, 2012
10:25 am

Good grief people. Calm down.

We started the season in worse shape at SS, with no way of knowing what we would get out of Pastornicky (who played well considering it was his first go round). Why trade propsects for an aging vet rental who is not much better offensively and a significant amount worse defensively than Wilson?

The reality is we were actually FEWER games out when Simmons came on board, and we are only slightly better overall record wise with him 18-15) than without him (46-39). That difference amounts to a WHOPPING one game difference over a full season when you take those winning percentages and factor it out over 162 games.

One GAME people! Over 4 weeks it means less than a quarter game difference. I know last year one game made a huge difference, but losing Andrelton for 4 weeks does not signal a need for a replacement SS any more than the state we were in at the beginning of the year. Also remember that Chipper wasn’t healthy when Pastornicky was out there, and McCann and Heyward were stinking it up offensively and both have turned it around recently. In other words, Simmons has had more help so that extra 1 WIN has many factors.

Let’s face it, Andrelton did provide a spark and was rock solid in the field, but our real issue was NOT at the SS position even when Pastornicky was there. Put Pastornicky or Wilson back out there be doen with it and move on to our real needs … such as figuring out the bullpen and getting some consistent starting pitching.

We can survive until Andrelton gets back if we can figure out how to fix our true problem areas, neither of which are at SS.

So, let’s not overlook another option that no one has mentioned this morning: move Chipper back to shortstop for a few weeks, and slide Prado in at third base. Or do the Chipper-worshippers here agree that he lacks the range to play SS at this point? Maybe we should look into signing the Henry Grady statue to a short-term contract at SS. (Yes, I acknowledge Sonny Clusters for originally suggesting the statue as an option at third base.)
