You mean like how you guys used to think Billy Wagner was a big mouth choker before Bobby Cox and Frank Wren went to see him on his WV farm and wallah – what an awesome dude Wags is?

Everyone knows that both those things are true.

Efrim – agreed. even if it is only a posturing negotiation tactic, it’s not fair that they get rewarded by either making him take less than slot or getting compensation pick next year if they go Loria-cheap and don’t sign him.

I saw some comments about “The Franchise” on here. I watched it. How annoying is Loria’s step son who is the president of the team? It’s not bad enough his daddy gave him a MLB team to dabble with but now he has a reality show too? It seemed like more than half the show was him. And that voice of his- like finger nails across a chalk board. I predict Ozzie publicly rips that kid before his days are done there in the Magic City. They couldn’t be more different.
Their GM said about 10 words on the whole show and he sounded incredibly unsure of himself. I still say that team will implode. I know I’m not going out on a limb alone there.

It’s horse-bleep.

Absolutely it is. Now, the contracts given to Strasburg, Harper and some of the international guys like Chapman are ridiculous (but hey, it’s the free market. If the Nats wanna break the bank for Stras, it’s their own business), but this is the other extreme. That kid has a legitimate beef in my book.

The whole idea was to force teams to not pay tons of money to draftees. I doubt that there is a provision that says the opposite. The checks that are in place are designed to punish teams that spend more than allowed, not less.

He sure does, but if I’m him and I’m seeing how the Marlins operate, I would be wondering if this is the organization I want holding the keys to my career. I understand at this point nothing is given and a kid his age just wants to play pro ball, but if he fights back and wins, how will the Marlins treat him? They have proven to act petty on other occasions. I mean, they wouldn’t even give future HOFer Bobby Cox a farewell video tribute. How are they going to treat a no-named kid who showed them up?

Loria and step-son pretty much makes marlins least classiest org in all of baseball. but the kid would also like to get his money now. you never know if he makes it to the show or drops in next draft due to injury etc. that’s what may compel him to take less.

but the kid would also like to get his money now. you never know if he makes it to the show or drops in next draft due to injury etc. that’s what may compel him to take less.

You bet. There’s value in risk, that’s the way it works. If the kid wants to forgo the risk, then he accepts less return. I’m not saying the kid isn’t getting stuck, but MLBPA doesn’t care about that. These aren’t union members, and may never be. Less money in the draft theoretically means more money for bona-fide ML players, and that was players’ focus in the new CBA.

I’ve missed my Uncle Lew every day since he died at age 91 in 2001 and wished I could still talk to him – until now. He was a Penn Stae and Joe Paterno fan – lived mere miles from the Penn Stae campus. This situation would have killed him.

Both players union and the owners are to blame for the new CBA. The vets absolteuly just gave the finger to every kid 18 and younger.

What sucks is that the Marlins just get the #10 pick in the draft next year. Plus their original pick. Players have very little leverage at all here. That’s sort of the whole idea of why the CBA sucks arse.

Didn’t the Braves pay more to their second pick than their first pick? I’m hazy there, but that’s what I’m thinking.

Maybe the Marlins have gone high on some of their other picks and now have to scale back on their unsigneds to keep from busting the penalty barrier. Not likely, knowing the org, but I guess it’s possible. You guys will have to pardon me, but I got zero interest in actually looking it up. :-)

Sims got like 1.6 million? I think. Wood got 700K – which was 117K above slot bonus for #85, but the Braves used the savings on Sims(his slot was like 200K higher) for Wood, Lien, Sanchez. Also, getting college kids like Dodig and Peterson to sign for less helped them offer more to Wood, Lien and Fern-gully.
