McCann out of lineup second time in four games

Braves backup catcher David Ross made his second start in the past four games on Wednesday, but manager Fredi Gonzalez said that slumping catcher Brian McCann would likely start the remaining four games before the All-Star break.

Ross was 8-for-26 (.308) with two homers against Cubs left-hander Paul Maholm, Wednesday’s starter. Gonzalez said Ross’ numbers against Maholm factored into the decision.

McCann was 2-for-22 in his past six games before Wednesday and had a .186 average with three homers and 11 RBIs in his past 30 games.

Freeman’s finger

Freddie Freeman has played with manageable pain in his left index finger for a few weeks since getting cortisone injections to ease the swelling from a June 6 injury. The first baseman plans to get two more cortisone shots during the All-Star break in hopes that it will help get him through the rest of the season.

Freeman said the finger is tight when he grips the bat and that he gets a “jolt” when he catches some hard throws from shortstop Andrelton Simmons, but that his play isn’t hindered by the discomfort.

Climbing the ladder(s)

Chipper Jones’ four-RBI game gave him 1,594 and left him just two RBIs behind Hall of Famer George Brett as the career RBI leader for players whose primary position was third base. Brett had 1,596 RBIs and Mike Schmidt had 1,595.

His five hits gave Jones 2,666 to move past Max Carey into seventh on the career list for switch-hitters. Entering Wednesday’s game, Jones was 17 hits behind No. 6 George Davis and 48 behind No. 5 Roberto Alomar.

With 1,034 extra-base hits before Wednesday, Chipper was only seven from tying Pete Rose (1,041) for second on the switch-hitter list.

Jones was back in the lineup Wednesday despite all the baserunning he did Tuesday. Gonzalez said when he got to the ballpark, Jones told him he felt good and wanted to play. He said Jones would probably be out of the lineup Thursday for the Cubs series finale before the Braves play a three-game weekend series at Philadelphia, their last games before the All-Star break.

If I were Freeman, I’d be gladly blaming his poor performance on his finger. He has been pretty mediocre lately. Thankfully for him, Uggla and McCann are outshining his mediocrity.

It’s always the same pitchers that do the Braves in. This offense fights to tie the game up, and Delgado gives the lead right back to them. Does this kid have to give up a HR every start? Good grief, between he and Minor, and the rest of this make do pitching staff, I can’t see how the Braves are even a couple games over .500 like they are.

You sure miss a guy like Beachy when you have these two hacks in your rotation. The Braves can’t get pitching help fast enough. If things play out like they should, Minor and Delgado will be back where they belong by the end of the month, in the minor leagues.

Good that Ross gets the start, he rakes againts LH pitchers.

I still say that McCann has vision problems. He squints like crazy at the plate. If you can’t see the ball, it is hard to hit the ball.

And how about Maholm as a trade target? Contract is enticing, only making $4.25M 2012, with a $6.5M team option for 2013.

Or sign a reliever to replace Medlen and let Medlen start.

Medlin and Minor need to switch positions and let Minor be a long reliever. Delgado needs to be sent down for Sheets. Bring Constanza back up and put him in left….move Prado to 2nd and BENCH FUGGLA. Also….Ross should be our starter at Catcher until MCCann can get his eyes fixed! Freeman needs to spend more time in the BC. Oh….and start warming up FG’s seat please!

Venters needs to go to Rome and work. He just can’t keep running him out there especially with RUNNERS ON BASE! You might as well give them at least one more base. You know he’s going to throw a wild pitch or one that all the catcher can do is block it.

There is definitely a major flaw in this team. Every game half don’t show up to play. Is it management or just plain lack of desire. Freddy F has definitely regressed. The other team could play all inf within 15 ft of third and cover every thing Uggla hits when he hits anything. half the time he watches strike 3 go by.

I sympathize with the payroll restrains Wren has had placed on him by ownership, but that’s no excuse for not doing anything to shake up this roster after last year’s appalling choke job. The Braves may have a lot of nice guys, but they’re not very professional. Wren’s failure to recognize that after the few years (they didn’t just choke in ‘11; they gagged down the stretch in ‘09 and ‘10, too) has led to what’s quickly turning into a lost season.

This roster just has too many scars to ever win again, IMO.

You have to get Venters going. How many games do you lose, trying to get him going? Fire the pitching coach. Fire Fredi.

Fredi says the Cubs are really good. Their record doesn’t indicate that. Fredi, you, are the only one saying the Cubs are good.

What’s with the Braves’ Little League way of running the bases. Prado, Chipper, all of them, look back to see if a throw is coming. That costs you runs. Run like hell. Don’t look back. Assume the throw is coming. And, someone tell AS not to slide at 1B. For every time it works, 2 out of 3 don’t work. Umpire can’t see play as well and usually calls the slider at 1B out.

Roster changes, trade, etc will have no positive affect as long as we keep Freddie. Why doesn’t AJC call Freddie out!? In Phillie or New York he would have been long gone. Braves are not hungry like Pirates, Reds, Mets or Nats. They (players and front office) have clearly demonstrated for years they are complacent and okay with slightly better thasn 500 records. Streaky hitters make for an up-and-down season, and the Braves have too many of them to play with any consistency. It’s going to be a bumpy ride this year.

The Braves must be giving thought to whether to give McCann the big bucks (or even keeping him) when the time comes. For ;whatever reason, and after almost a year, he just isn’t cutting it.

I can’t wait to face the Braves this weekend and finally get my first win! Let Bourn and Prado get on base all they want, I’ll just pitch around Chipper until Uggla and McCann come to bat. Once we get Halliday and Howard back, we’ll blow past Atlanta!

I still believe we could have won multiple World Series with a different manager than Cox. Freddie is meant to be in Bobbie’s image. We need a different type of manager. No time like now with Chipper leaving to change the culture in the organization.

Don Sutton alone is the worst broadcaster forever until the end of time.
The game is ALWAYS a backdrop to his non-stop musings about life on the farm, some old has been whom he learned the alphabet from way back in 1961, and who the HAYELL is “Granny?” Forget that! I don’t want to know!
SHUT UP DON SUTTON SSSS TTTT FFFF UUUU ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

The Braves are my team but it is truly painful to watch them because they just can’t hit and play fundamental sound baseball. Tuesday night when all the hiting was going on just remember the walking that the Cubs pitchers were doing. Mr. Wrenn you need to send Venters to the minors because he just doesn’t have it right now. Pull the trigger on a trade and try to help the offense. McCann needs to be dealt because the Braves doesn’t have the money to tie up to resign him. If the Braves got rid of McCann it would probably revive his career. The fans that go to the games need to stay home and demand better.
