“People will you get a clue, UGGLA is NOT the problem. His OBP is 2nd highest on the team behind Chipper and Prado, the SAME as Michael Bourn. He is what he is, he is streaky but he still gets on base.”
Pull your head away from the stat tables and watch the games. Dan Uggla is paid to drive in runs. You can say he’s paid to “create runs”, fine, either way when he goes into one of these deep slumps he’s not getting his job done. His averages over the entire season are NOT contributing to the Braves winning games in June and July; Braves have to look at what kind of player he will be today, tomorrow, and moving forward. Last year Uggla had essentially ONE good month and FIVE sub-par to terrbible months. This year he has had two decent months and now one bad month and counting. Braves are not going to win with that kind of contribution from a player counted on to drive in runs and provide right-handed balance in the middle of the lineup.
Dan Uggla an AllStar. Give me a break. Dan – do the right thing and refuse to play since you are not deserving. I think you struck out again as I typed this.
Two players that have recently been a cleanup hitter for the Braves:
Player one’s 162 game average: .256/.339/.487 OPS: .826, 32 HR 96 RBI
Player two’s 162 game average: .256/.344/.476 OPS: .820, 32 HR 94 RBI
Anyone guess these two players’ names? Little hint: The Braves won quite a bit with player one in the cleanup spot for years.
A: Player one is Andruw Jones, Player two is Dan Uggla.
Now, considering CF is a more traditional source of offense than 2B, and added to Uggla’s stats we now have Bourne in CF, lets just drop all the complaining about Uggla’s offense.
You want to complain and run him out of town? Who did we have in CF over the next four years after getting rid of those offensive numbers? Mark Kotsay and Nate McLouth. You really want to run off those types of numbers again?
I am at my wit’s end with this team. We have so much freaking talent. We know this team can hit. Simmons was a great move for us. I am typically not negative as baseball is a long season, but I have long been on the Fire Fredi bandwagon since mid-season last year. I don’t have all the answers, but unforutnately, Fredi doesn’t seem to either and he is paid to do so. I am happy someone asked a somewhat tricky question on how long Fredi was going to keep running Venters out there.
The team Brass needs to let the fanbase know something about the direction of this team and that it will not accept mediocrity. Until they do, the fanbase is rightfully going to question this team’s commitment. In order of team needs:
Remove Fredi Gonzalez – I just don’t see how people can defend this guy. I like the hire initially, but it simply isn’t working out.
Remove Roger McDowell – I realize Leo Mazzone had issues in Baltimore, but can you truly say that Roger and Leo are anywhere close to each other. Our pitchers, all of them except Kimbrel, have regressed. I don’t know enough to say whether or not the rash of injuries can be put on McDowell, but the production and adaptation of these pitchers is non-existant.
Get another top of the rotation pitcher and demote Minor…or move him to the bullpen.
Get a lefty middle reliever and if possible another reliever.
Our division is not going to get any easier in the near future. The Phillies are down big time, but you know they will spend and be back. The Nats are only going to get better, which is scary. The Mets should be commended for their play. If you give us their team and our management staff, we would be 15 games under 500. The Marlins are still a train-wreck. The time is now and the season is still salvageable. Make the hard decision Frank to remove Fredi and Roger, as well as get Liberty Media to step up for a top-tier pitcher. And if we don’t resign Bourn, you may as well flush the whole team now. How can you not like the passion and intensity Bourn and Prado display every single game?
Dawg Dad, I didn’t say Uggla wasn’t struggling and yes I would prefer someone more consistent but most power hitters are streaky and he has hit 30 HRS and driven in a lot of runs. Unless we go get and pay McCutcheon or a big time hitter, that is what you get. He is a contributor (as are all players outside of Bourn and Prado) to the problems but he still gets on base more than most on the team and will likely have over 100 RBIs. McCann and situational hitting are killing as as is the starters and middle relief. Every team and player goes into slumps but over the life of the season the starters and bullpen are killing us.
It’s clear now that we are not going to catch the Nats. They are just plain better than us. Their # 3 and 4 starters are prob better than our #1. The Braves aren’t terrible. They are just average. I’ve come to grips with this and I don’t get as upset anymore. Uggla will always hold us back. Give me little Pedroia and he would have twice as many RBI’s as Uggs at this point b/c he makes contact. I’m worried that Bourn and Prado are going to get tired of getting on without scoring.
Randoms…guess Chipper forgot to ‘bring it’ last night…wonder what, and which, his teammates thought about Chipper’s comment about those that don’t seem to be trying to ‘bring it’ every night?…count me in as one of the ‘conspiracy theorists’ that believes that Larussa (sp?) chose Chipper to replace Kemp – even though he, Chipper, was leading in the supplemental ‘vote in’ – so the Cardinal, Freez (again the spelling is suspect) would have a chance…the way things are going, I put the ‘over/under’, including both the date and the person, as to who/when a Brave will finally admit that ‘We suck!’…I say Chipper by the ‘ides’ of August.
Did anyone catch Chipper’s clubhouse interview the other day? He said he busts his butt all the time, as the Phillies did last season, and he needs to see more of that from the other Braves. Is he arrogant or what. Uggla, Simmons, Prado, Freeman, Bourne and Heyward all bust their butts harder than Chipper does.
This team is mediocre, just as the Braves were in the 80s. The only difference is those Braves were led on the field by the likable Dale Murphy, and this team by the unlikable Chipper. At least, in losing, they had one big star who was a good guy worth cheering for.
The Braves are truly a boring product. Teams like the Phillies and Yankees go after players like Cliff Lee, Roy Haliday and C.C. Sabathia, while the Braves go get guys like Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets. They win a few, they lose a few, and never lead the division anymore. The TV announcers and blog hosts spin positives, while the fans fume. It has all become very, very tiring and frankly, it’s becoming harder and harder to care.
The Braves are a joke! Time to rebuild with younger players….wasting time with this bunch…..And get rid of the FRONT OFFICE…Time to redo this whole organization…and get rid of whoever is doing player evaluations!!! They don’t know what their doing!
Yeah but they won the NL East the past five years in a row because they went out and got players like Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. The Braves have not won the East since 2005 because they’re tightwads. Are you able to see my point now??????
Constanza has to get back in this lineup somehow. The Braves just seem to win when he is in there and the others are forced to get quality at bats. We have too many guys that are unable or unwilling to beat the shift. If that takes Chipper out of the lineup, so be it.
Dan Uggla being an All Star shows the system is broke. If you want the fans to pick the game’s players we need to change the name to something besides the All Star Game. All Star Game it isn’t!
If Frank Wren quit overpaying for the likes of Kawakami, McLouth, Lowe, & Uggly he wouldn’t have to go dumpster diving all the time for players off the scrap heap.
Why do recent teams like the Marlins, Rockies, Rays & Giants go to the World Series with smaller payrolls than the Braves?
I predict Bourn will leave via free agency & Wren will take that money and give McCann a big extension.
Ryan Buchter, AA LHP might have been a better call up, 1.17 era, 2.79 vs LHP, .043 vs RHP, 36 SO14 BB over 30 ip this season, even so need to keep an eye on this 25 year old.
