I’m happy for Chipper. I’ve been voting for Chipper for the final spot because I always figured Bourn would replace Kemp (outfielder for outfielder). If I knew Chipper was going to picked, I would have been voting for Bourn the whole time.

or indicates less belief in them than you possess. I was trained as a scout, so rightly or wrongly I depend on my eyes to judge defense. he is no longer great, but he is better than any others around here and the Braves tend to value defense at SS, so it is unlikely IMO that they would replace him with a guy who can’t field, which is what I said to begin with.
I read that all bullpens are PRONE TO CHAOS” I think Mazzone won fourteen division titles and not one year did his bullpens fell to produce. NO CHAOS FOR MAZZONE!!!
yeah right, he is soooo good that none of the other 29 teams in baseball have had anything to do with him even though many have changed pitching coaches over the years. He rode in on the coat tails of three HOFers . Big deal. He ruined Avery completely
If I knew Chipper was going to picked, I would have been voting for Bourn the whole time.
I know! I really wanted to vote for Bourn as I figured Chipper would be added by himself somehow (utility player or something, by LaRusa). It went the opposite. Gotta fire whoever said vote Chipper…..
He rode in on the coat tails of three HOFers . Big deal. He ruined Avery completely
Don’t really know about Avery, but I agree with the first statement. If he really was that good, he’d still have a job. He couldn’t even help Baltimore…
The Braves are not good enough to win now but I think they can be now and in the future with some shrewd deals. First, lets look at payroll available next year, needs this year and next year, and see what is possible. We have Chippers 14m and Lowe’s 10m to spend. We need a number 1 starter, a LF when Prado moves to third next year, and to resign Bourn. I think we should trade for Greinke now and sign him to a 5 year extension at 20m per year. The Brewers want pitching and a SS, so I would give them Pastornicky and either Minor, Delgado, or Tehran. Then I would trade Brian McCann. I think his best years are behind him, and he has trouble seeing the ball, especially in day games(.098 average in day games). This saves another 12m, so we now have 16m left to spend. I would trade McCann to Minn. for Willingham, Liriano, and a relief pitcher (Perkins is a LH we could probably use). Now your starting pitching this year is Greinke, Hanson, Hudson, JJ, and Liriano. Next year you trade Liriano and substitute Minor/ Delgado/ or Tehran, whoever hasnt been traded to Milwalkie and who wins the job. You also have Beachy if he is healthy by the allstar break. You have Willingham (.270, 18 HRs) for LF signed for 2012 and 2013 at 7m, and you sign Bourn for 10m per year for 5 years. You have additional pop this year and beyond and most of your young pitching. I think Ross and Boscan, and down the road Bettancourt will be fine at catcher.
defensive metrics still leave a lot to be desired…do they rate the speed of a pitch off a hitters bat? If the defenders are playing in a shift? I knew a lot of work was needed when they would be quoted on MLBTR and Tex and LaRoche were not considered way above average….
Where are you guys getting 14 hr’s for Pastornicky? It said 14 doubles. Doubles are not HR’s. Some of you guys should not post. It shows your lack of baseball intelligence.
Many were poo pooing Josh Willingham when they thought he might come to the Braves, well he is batting 267 with 17 home runs and 56 R.B.I. sounds like a pretty productive right hand stick to me.
NickB, no point in trying to reason with cowdogit. He thinks Constanza should be playing over Chipper and then says our posts make us look like 10 year olds. Just one of the many village idiots on this blog.
#1-The Braves are McCann and Uggla getting HOT away from taking the division IMO
#2-The Braves are the ONLY team in the NL East without an ACE (mets-santana, marlins-johnson, washington-gio/stras and phillies-halladay)……Therefore, GREINKE is a necessity
#3-the Braves HAVE to pick up Hudson’s option next year or else they’ll be in the SAME boat looking for a starting pitcher
#4-With Chipper, Lowe, and JJ’s $$$ off the books, the Braves should have enough $$ to sign Greinke, Bourn, Prado at 3B, and a corner OF
Greinke hasn’t impressed the past year and a half pitching in arguably the worst division in baseball.
Thus far he’s been terrible in the postseason.
Save the prospects & go after Liriano who has more postseason experience, is pitching quite well, and won’t cost an arm and a leg. Save the prospects for a hitter via trade, preferably in the offseason when we can probably sign Greinke anyways.
The point is that it makes no sense for the Braves to value defense in the backup shortstop when they already have quite possibly the best defensive shortstop in the game playing everyday. We need a backup infielder with nothing more than a serviceable glove who can hit … in other words, someone other than Jack Wilson.
I was surprised he only got $7 mill a year to be honest, but his defense leaves a lot to be desired….
Twins may move him, but I would think it would be in the offseason where they can present a full season of production and try to squeeze more out of him from more buyers
As much as I like EOF, lefties are usually a bargain for Braves.
They had Mahay, then transitioned to Will Ohman and then EOF. The two prior to EOF, did a remarkable job. Seems like Braves have good luck with lefties in the pen.
it does make sense, if Simmons goes down they still want decent defense, backup SS is not usually about defensive replacement in game unless the starter is poor.
This team is missing more than one piece. I say, limp to the barn this season, let the kid arms start next season, trade old pieces for young this season, and start a legit rebuilding program with the kid starters, Heyward, Freeman, Simmons, Venters and Kimbrel, and the new young additions as your cornerstones. That excites me!
Be bolder and don’t re-sign a soon-to-be expensive Bourn; Costanza can play CF next year until Lipka is ready. As long as Prado doesn’t ask for the moon, he’s a keeper at 3B. Uggla should be traded for multiple young positional pieces – ESPECIALLY OF’S, as should Bourn, JJ, Hudson, and (to a lesser extent) Hinske. I’m sorry, but even McCann doesn’t fit in this plan; let a stop-gap vet sharing time with Ross groom the kid arms in 2013 until Betancourt is ready in 2014.
We’re not gonna win anything this year with what we’ve got, and we are going to lose BIG next year by trading young assets now for what we need – which is more than a little bit.
we all know who Just Saying is. he always abuses the South , a total idiot about both baseball and most everything else. Just another hater folks, nothing to see here….
trade old pieces for young this season, and start a legit rebuilding program with the kid starters, Heyward, Freeman, Simmons, Venters and Kimbrel, and the new young additions as your cornerstones. ..MBBF
they will have no old pieces to trade, they are already about the youngest starting tean in baseball ans Chipper,Wilson and Hinske will be gone. who would rebuild an extremely young team, and with what? Nobody in the minors is anywhere near ready, and all we have to trade is young players now
I don’t reckon that “Just Saying” would be much trouble. Probably take one McCoy to take care of him or three Hatfields. One Hatfield if he turns his back.
nolie, the lack of positional players in the minors is alarming. However, the young arms are there. Trading for playoff pieces for this team this year is like spending good cash for a new, expensive door, for a house on the edge of the wrong side of the tracks.
Still on the wrong side of the tracks, when what you need to do with the good “money” you have is move.
but you don’t blow up a team that is this good, if they were 29-43 then sure, but they aren’t.
you spend the money to improve both for this year and the next. you go after the big starter, next season you go after a big corner bat and a young controllable CF’er.
your plan would have the Braves under .500 for 3 or 4 years
Agree with you, or like I said, trade the abundance of young arms for young hitters this offseason. Just like Glavine and Smotlz in the early 90’s, it takes time for young pitchers to get acclimated with the bigs. Why give up on them so early for just a taste of October, which could be 1 game.
I’m so glad Chipper is going to the AllStar game, I don’t care that I voted for him a cajillion times, just glad he’s going! It’s fitting he should be there, he deserves it just based on his career. Now I’m voting for Michael!! I think it’s great if we get Greinke, I’m not opposed to giving up one of the young guns, but I’ll be sad if it was Randall. Come on Braves, this Cubs team stinks, gotta win.
Also, what are your thoughts on going for it over the next six months given that the NL stinks and the Braves don’t have any star prospects in the system above Low-A. May as well package em and get what we can? Thoughts?
idk, I just have a problem trading young arms for a 3 month rental in another pitcher who has mental problems, and in 3 postseason starts hasn’t performed. Might as well go for Liriano who is cheaper and arb-eligible for next year.
Efrim@7:37 LOL, he’s been very impressive this year for sure. I don’t know if he’s the right guy to trade for, but I sure wouldn’t hate it if he came here. Good pitcher.
Gee whiz — play ball! It’s going on 8:00! BTW, I agree with others that we need to “send it to the barn” this season (especially with our current case of Fredi-itis) and nurture, mature, and develop the talent we have, with an eye toward making a solid pickup on the market in the meantime.
The David Justice story is sad. Imagine what could have been here if he stayed. On another note… would be cool if they would show classic Braves games during rain delays instead of these “In My Own Words” shows. Those are played out.

nolie, the lack of positional players in the minors is alarming. However, the young arms are there. Trading for playoff pieces for this team this year is like spending good cash for a new, expensive door, for a house on the edge of the wrong side of the tracks.
Still on the wrong side of the tracks, when what you need to do with the good “money” you have is move.

Huge understatement…. been like this for at least 3 years, maybe more. Gawd, I wish we had drafted Mike Trout….

but you don’t blow up a team that is this good, if they were 29-43 then sure, but they aren’t.
you spend the money to improve both for this year and the next. you go after the big starter, next season you go after a big corner bat and a young controllable CF’er.
your plan would have the Braves under .500 for 3 or 4 years

MiaBchBravesFan,
Agree with you, or like I said, trade the abundance of young arms for young hitters this offseason.

Come on Braves, this Cubs team stinks, gotta win.

noles, would you trade Delgado for Greinke?
Also, what are your thoughts on going for it over the next six months given that the NL stinks and the Braves don’t have any star prospects in the system above Low-A. May as well package em and get what we can? Thoughts?

Greinke hasn’t impressed the past year and a half pitching in arguably the worst division in baseball.
Have you seen his stats this year? What in the world doesn’t impress you?

idk, I just have a problem trading young arms for a 3 month rental in another pitcher who has mental problems, and in 3 postseason starts hasn’t performed. Might as well go for Liriano who is cheaper and arb-eligible for next year.

Efrim@7:37 LOL, he’s been very impressive this year for sure. I don’t know if he’s the right guy to trade for, but I sure wouldn’t hate it if he came here. Good pitcher.

the 8pm hour hasn’t gotten tired of mccann’s struggles yet, I guess McFann. This game needs to start at 10 for BMac to hit….
