What concerns me most about Grienke are his home/away splits.
Home 51-28 (He’s never lost at Miller Park)
Away 34-47
Coming into the NL East and having to pitch in DC, Philly and NY with regularity, against those fans, I just don’t know.

Plus, there is the chance IF he does require surgery, that the Braves decline the option, but follow it up with a 2 year deal for less per season.
Would like that…. at the very least, if we have too many starters for 2014, he can come out of the ‘pen and not be too overpriced.

EFrim – I see your point, but conversely, if the farm is as weak as you claim (and I’m not doubting you), then they aren’t going to bring much of anything in return.
Bulk prospect packages will bring you more, buy the individual talent isn’t as strong as it used to be. Gilmartin can slide into a bigeague rotation next year – there is value in that.

Lew–venters is a lefty, too. Not sure that righty or lefty makes all that much difference in the late innings. Are you saying we would have a shortage of lefties without EOF? I care more about the role of late inning relief. Just think that Varvaro could be effective in that role.
Also think that venters might be interesting trade bait in the off season.

Grienke gives us the rotation we should have had this year. Beachy out with tommy john, JJ finally getting his knee corrected so he can pitch, and Minor and Delgado being the NL Punching bag. We could use a really good pitcher. Huddy to retire in 2 years, Um Bop Hanson cant do it alone.
SO YES TO GRIENKE. Would be a smart move to trade and sign a 5 year deal for 80 million.

Re: Flande – not so sure Id throw him into the mix because of an early spring training performance. He’s been OK at AAA, but hardly exemplary. And according to BaseballCube, he’s on a one year contract. Not so sure if they even have contractual control over him next year. I’m certainly not sure that he’ll be anywhere near as effective as EOF or Venters have been. He’s a totally uproven player.

Sheets was signed to a minor league contract – not sure how that can possibly be detrimental in the least. He either comes in and pitches well or goes back to where he came from and we spent diddly to find out. Very low risk high reward signing.

Lew–I’d err toward the guy who go a full seventh inning, which has been fredi’s preference, though heh as been tinkering with the lefty righty thing with EOF of late. I realize the sample is small, but Vavaro’s numbers have been better against LH hitters. Just like the way he’s pitched…he’s got promise.

We are not a playoff team this year despite being 3 games over .500 and 4-5 games behind in the division. This team won’t be there next year either. They have shown us all what they are about and its not much. This team for whatever reason just is not good enough to be a playoff team. They can’t even beat the teams in their own division, if you can’t do that, you don’t deserve to be in the playoffs. This team has no direction, no heart, and a worthless ownership group. Why go out and get more expensive players when all they are going to do is lose anyways? May as well keep your farm system the way it is and lose but save some money in the process. This team is just great at letting their entire fan base down.

Also, as much as I hate to say it, Chipper Jones doesn’t deserve to be a All Star, sorry. The guy plays half a season and he gets to recognized as one of the best? Those were pure sympathy votes. That is supposed to be a game where guys who play all the time and earn their spots play, not a guy that is always on the DL, and taking all kinds of games off and not there to be counted on to help his team. I love Chipper and always will, but he doesn’t deserve to be a All Star, imo.

It’s not the first time that Retiring players with ecellent Career credentials were added to the All STar roster to pay tribute to their entire careers. If someone like Jeter were retiring, I’d be willing to bet that the Commish would already have added them both above and beyond the regular roster. kind of like they did with Ripken Jr and Gwynn.

I can’t quite figure out why some are opposed to replacing Jack Wilson with Pastornicky. Pastornicky is probably going to be nothing more than a super-utility guy in the long run, right? So putting him on the roster now and limiting his at-bats probably isn’t the end of the world. We all agree that we don’t really need Jack Wilson for his defense anymore since Uggla hardly ever sits and since Simmons’ defense is better, anyway. I also think we can all agree that while Pastornicky doesn’t set the world on fire with his bat, he at least hits better than Wilson and gives a better option off the bench for our reserve infielder. He would also provide more speed on the bases in the late innings.
So, what’s the objection?
