Chipper texts Harper appreciation for classy move

This isn’t exactly shaping up to being a big Chipper Jones vs. Bryce Harper showdown for the Final Vote for the NL All-Star team, at least not for the two of them.

When Harper learned Sunday that he was among four players in addition to Jones up for the final NL roster spot, he told reporters he’d vote for Jones, saying “I think a Hall of Famer should be able to go to the All-Star game his last year.”

When Jones learned of Harper’s comments, he texted Harper Sunday night.

“That’s a very classy thing for a 19-year-old kid to say,” Jones said. “I think he’s going to be in his fair share of All-Star games throughout the years. He’s an unbelievable talent and I just let him know that I appreciated what he said. It was classy. But we’ll see. All those guys (in) the final five guys deserve to be there. I’m just happy to be in the mix.”

Fans have until 4 p.m. to vote for Jones or Harper, Michael Bourn, Aaron Hill, or David Freese. Results will be announced shortly thereafter.

A classy move on Harper ’s part, and a classy response to the respect he showed Chipper! Chipper is correct… Harper is a special talent and there are lots of AS games in his future, and possbly starting this year. But my guess is that probably 2 or 3 of the guys on that final ballot get to go… there’s always injuries and other reasons that players aren’t able to go, and their replacements usually come from the final ballot.

But I’m voting for Chipper!

LWJ deserves the shot. Bryce will have plenty of them ahead. Agree with Chipper, class move by a young man.

Even if Chipper’s voted on, he could well be sidelined with injury. Michael Bourn? You must be kidding.
Isn’t Dan Uggla starting enough of a joke?

I voted two hundred times for Chipper. I wanted Bourn to go because he deserves it .
Like Harper said a HOF player his last year deserves it more.

Norcal, Bourn is hitting over 300..20 sb..7 homers and over 100 hits already this year. If that no deserving nothing is.

Classy thing for Harper to say, but Chipper doesn’t deserve it this year. Bourn or Prado before Chipper. Chipper needs to rest his knee, ankle, bruise, etc.

Runnin: Gotta agree with you. Chipper is a future Hall of Famer, but sending him to the All Star Game is charity and not respect at this point.

Let Bourn go, let uggla play in the AA All Star game where he has earned the chance to play . He may go 2 for 4 there.

What a waste of $12M a year.

Just let the managers pick 40 players. The way SF stuffed the ballot box they might as well have put Pelosi on the team too. If it is an exhibition game which counts, let them go to 40.

Only Chipper’s oblique muscle should go. The true star of our team.

Matt Kemp is injured, will not be able to play; LaRussa will need a CF, and it might make sense for him to select a replacement hitting .300 with golden gloves – a la MB – or the rising star from the Nats. Chipper his hitting right at .300 in his swan song and deserves the vote – not a sympathy vote like the declining Willie Mays or Hank Aaron got in their late years, but an earned vote.

Isn’t David Freese a Cardinal? Their fans, maybe the best in the game, traditionally stuff the ballot (or more charitably, rally around their players,) and though Freese is not unmeritorious, I’d say he is a lock to win the ballot.

All the reports about the arrogant, self-absorbed, immature punk Brice Harper was in the minors are nowhere near to what he has shown so far in the majors. I like this kid and hope he stays on this course. But still believe by the end of the year the ROY vote will be closer than most think.

Harper should want to go it will be his first and only chance to go, he is just another Francouer in my mind he will fade away just like french boy & just because its Larry’s last season doesn’t mean he should go he should be out hunting at Hooter’s yo yo yo………….

I was unsure how to feel about this young man in the beginning but two things stand out about him 1) he plays the game the way it is supposed to be played Freddie Freeman could learn ) and 2) he respects the game. I would not be at all shocked if 3-5 yrs from now we are talking about him as the face of MLB. Class Act

Bourne is hitting over .300 and second in league in stolen bases, NorCal. He)) yes he deserves to go.

Funny/Ignorant Comments Above By Those Against Chipper:

“Doesn’t deserve it this year” …”its charity…its not respect at this point”:

So A Future Hall of Famer Who is Has been the face of your franchise doesn’t deserve to go under the circumstances about it being his last year? And IT IS about respect him here. And sometimes you show respect with charity. The way you show respect and gratitude is by doing this one simple thing…vote for him!

“Vote for Chipper to be in his Final All Star:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2012/fv/ballot.jsp

**If this was Jeter in his final year…no matter his current stats or performance. This would not even be a discussion. Thats wrong and sickening. I can hear it now: “he’s been a great player, let him go…blah, blah, blah” Also, the Yankee fans would (and have year after year) stuck behind him in the voting even when he didn’t deserve to go. Sad that so called Braves fans above…haven’t and don’t support doing the same.

To Just Saying:

You obviously don’t read and follow Braves players and their stories. So let me inform you so that you are ignorant no more.

Chipper doesn’t broadcast his “classy”/caring/charity work outside the game. Many choose to ignore his efforts…but here you go:

“I believe in using my gifts and public image to help the community.”

“… the Chipper Jones Family Foundation…has made huge strides in giving back to the communities which helped Chipper get to where he is today. Organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Florida and Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Ranches, Little League programs in Atlanta and Pierson, FL, Stetson University, and the Boys and Girls Clubs have all received gifts from Chipper’s Foundation. Included in these programs is the Take ‘Em Deep Program where Chipper teams with businesses to make donations to various organizations every time Chipper hits a home run.

The Foundation has also instituted the Around the Horn Program Field of Dreams Program, which has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to area youth baseball programs for repairing and refurbishing youth ballparks in Florida and Georgia. The past three years the Foundation has given grants to the Little League program in Chipper’s hometown of Pierson, Florida, the YMCA’s project in Atlanta, and the Little League program in DeLand, FL where Chipper played many of his games as a youth. Improving youth’s interest in baseball is the purpose of The Chipper Gang, which has been bringing out area kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs for three years to Turner Field for a day at the park.”

Next time insert your foot in your mouth before showing your ignorance. We would all be better served not hearing such stupid drivel and tastlessness.

More on Chipper’s charity work:

“The Chipper Jones Celebrity Golf Invitational has grossed over $ 1,000,000 for Chipper’s Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis, Camp Twin Lakes, and Stetson University. Finally, Chipper and the Foundation continue to help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Georgia Chapter) work for a cure to this disease, as Chipper has served as honorary chairman to various committees and personally donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the campaign. Several other projects are in the works, including Helping for the Holidays, where the Foundation will help 10 families in Florida and Georgia to enjoy the holidays a bit more (which has already been started at Westshore Elementary in Tampa), and the Hawkeye Scholarship Program, which will help deserving kids go to college”

How can you argue he doesn’t belong to be here anyone above… Chipper is one of the best examples of the modern day franchise player. 18 years with the Atlanta Braves and a solid career hitting a little over 300. Not to mention he was great defensively throughout his career. For a guy like Chip to hang it up its only right to grant him a spot in the All-Star Game.
