Down with the bastille!
July 1st, 20125:16 pm
Its no secret that I’m no supporter of Uggla as a player the last year and a half in Atlanta. However, I think form what I have observed, that he is a good teammate and I know he always hustles. I’ve never heard him say anyhting but positive things about his team in interviews.
As for the All-Star selection I’ll be interested to hear what his comments are about it. If I am right, I bet that he says he appreciates the fans votes but that others are at least as or more deserving.

Trade uggla for a sixpack
July 1st, 20125:19 pm
The Cowds This weekend at Tooner Field reminded me of the sparse Crowds at the old Fulton Co Stad…
More People would go to the games if we could take Big Boy Beer Coolers in like they did in the old days…
1. The Braves do have an All-Star middle infielder. But it sure as hell isn’t Uggla. Andrelton Simmons is the man.
2. Has anyone in MLB stranded more baserunners than Uggla? If so,it’s gotta be a short list. Evidently, his 43 RBI made a big deal with All Star voters as a 2nd baseman. That’s BS. With .300 hitters like Prado and Bourn always on base, if he could make contact at all, he’d have 70 RBI by now.
3. Again, it has been proven that LIberty Media does not own the Atlanta Braves. The Washington Nationals own the Atlanta Braves.
4. As long as Venters, Diaz, Francisco, Wilson, Uggla, and Hinske continue to perform at a minor-league level, this team cannot be taken seriously as a playoff contender. Especially with the Frediot at the helm. It’s hard to compete with Davey Johnson and a roster full of actual major leaguers.
July 1st, 20125:20 pm
Chipper on the team: We have the ability to play brilliantly. We also have the ability to bring out our inner Bad News Bears at times. It’s frustrating, but when you’ve got some young guys they’re going to make young mistakes. But we have a chance to really end the homestand against a team that we, on paper, should beat. So let’s just take care of business, and go to Philly and into the All-Star break on a good note.”
Losing is excepted within the Braves as long as you hustle and/or have a past record of success.
Weird comments on the blog today—way, way over the top.
The Braves can not afford to send Venters to AAA to work on whatever the issues are, because they do not have anyone else to bring up.
As it is now, the pen is very shakey, so they can’t add more questionalble arms.
July 1st, 20125:21 pm
Hanson is inconsistent? Does anyone ever bother to check before making declarations? Hanson has given up 3 or less ER in 12 of 16 starts and 2 or less ER in 11 of 16 starts.
You are correct I’m afraid. We’ll never see the Venters from early last year due to overuse. The players union does a lot of stupid stuff in my opinion but they should stand up for these young guys who get abused somehow. Venters was really good and now he’ll never get a big payday like he could have.
That’s what I thought. You’re pure chicken shyt. And if, as you say, you blow your cool and then are back to normal in a few minutes, then I suggest you learn how to apologize for making asinine statements that piss others off.
July 1st, 20125:22 pm
One of the many reasons I’m going to miss Chipper is his honest assessment of things.
Or “veteran mistakes” like the lazy shyt throw to Uggla, right Chipper? Or the “I’m getting the F out the way of that liner” like yesterday game, right Chipper?

At that 5:21 Post, Man Dude, I felt that one here in Grayson
Uggla is on pace for 190 strikeouts. The legendary Mark Reynolds led MLB last year with 197. I have no doubt Dan can step it up and lead the league.
July 1st, 20125:26 pm
Lew, you’re right. We don’t even need a front line starter. Why that Hudson is as dependable a stopper, big game guy in the league.
Like I said, don’t blame Huddy. He’s doing great considering his age and those surgeries he’s recently gone though. He just isn’t a 1.
July 1st, 20125:28 pm
so Bozo asked Chip what it was like playing for the mariners back in the day and he replied
that’s a Joe question clown!
July 1st, 20125:29 pm
At spring training , everyone said pitching was going to be the strongest part of the braves team . Seven years McDowell has failed to prepare his pitchers for battle . Fourteen years Mazzone never had one bad year . this situation has become more creepy every year .
i live in Mississippi, if you are really going to drive all this way because your character got besmirched in the internet, you are crazier than I am
July 1st, 20125:30 pm
CTB – Lew was posting about Hanson, not Hudson,
Or the “I’m getting the F out the way of that liner” like yesterday game, right Chipper?
Umm, Chipper didn’t play yesterday…
Diaz is hitting lefties really well of the bench this year
July 1st, 20125:31 pm
CTB – Whatever. Who are you going to get and what are you going to pay?
Nothing like having Chipper throw team mates under the bus…….
July 1st, 20125:32 pm
You seem Pretty Livid abt dropping another series to the Curley W’s?
I’m Telling you they remind my ass of the 1994 Expos
I bet we have won 3 or fewer series against the Curley W’s since 2010???
July 1st, 20125:33 pm
MIBraves – But he’s all pissed off – don’t expect hi to actually read before flying off the handle. Just not the way it’s done.
July 1st, 20125:34 pm
Only Braves fan..is that a record 107 in Athens?
It was 108 yesterday in Athens and I’m not sure that was a record.
I do remember back in Athens in 1981 it was 100 or higher for 13 straight days.
July 1st, 20125:35 pm
Braves have always sucked against the Nats. Now the Nats are a good team. Hudson is not a clutch pitcher. Anytime you need him to pitch well in an important game he chokes. Has-Ben Sheets should fix all of these problems……………………
Fear – there was probably no one watching that didn’t think the Braves at times looked like the Bad News Bears on defense recently! Naming names is throwing someone under the bus! He just acknowledged what we all saw!
July 1st, 20125:36 pm
Im Not Uggla’s biggest Apologist but I dont care how many times he K’s!
I just want to see him Pull a 1999 Chipper and Carry the team against teams like the Phillies and The Curly W’s!
He’s being paid 15 mill… he is paid to carry the team when he gets hot. thats why he is getting ripped on here
July 1st, 20125:37 pm
keylargo – You’re right on ‘81 – I was painting signs with Classic signs and we had to install a 20′ x 36′ sign on the side of a white building in Greensboro, Ga. one of those days – official temp was 105 and we had absolutely no shade – took six hours for four of us to bolt that sign to the wall.
July 1st, 20125:39 pm
S/O to FEAR
What Happened To the poster NO MORE BOBBY? And Chris From Sac?
I’m Guessing that Chris From Sac got Bozo’d which is understandable, but what happened to NO MORE BOBBY?
MIBravesFan – Chipper’s statement basically put the poor play on the young guys. Ignoring the fact that he hardly plays, Uggla has been god awful, and Mac is having a pretty down year. It’s poor baseball all around not just the young guys tanking the team.
not that it makes much difference, but Uggla is making $13 mill
July 1st, 20125:41 pm
Chris from Sacramento lost his will to live when Jason started playing so well. He was last seen in the basement of his home, curled up in a ball, unbathed, and heard muttering to himself incoherently…
What’s going on TH?
July 1st, 20125:42 pm
Lew, no, I know you posted about Hanson up top. I’m talking about earlier this morning and days before when you said we don’t even need a top starter because we have Huddy and Hanson.
July 1st, 20125:44 pm
Like I said – Who you going to get and what are you going to pay? You going to mortgage the future by trding young guys who you’re pissed off at now and spend money that will put us in the hole going forward like Lowe did?
July 1st, 20125:45 pm
No NickB, I’m not willing to drive all the way to Mississippi to deal with you, so I guess you are free to attack me however you like without worry that I’m just around the corner. Word of advice though, count to 10 before you attack me for something stupid like you did. The magic word is “scroll”. I don’t take kindly to being attacked personally, or on a family level. That is so petty.
Lew, it isn’t up to a fan or anyone else besides top Braves people who decide who to trade or keep involving a guy like a front liner. They need to decide a) if they need one and b) how do we go about acquiring him. I believe it is something that really needs to be done. But I’m just a little fan blogging from his little town in Chattanooga.
No disrespect Lew. You are one of my favorites. Probably are my fav here.
July 1st, 20125:46 pm
I figured you would just take it as a sarcastic comment, not a serious attack on your family
July 1st, 20125:48 pm
And again – if you had read more carefully, what I was saying was that Hudson might be extended, but as a lower rotation pitcher. Hanson is good enough to be a number one and with Vizcaino and Beachy coming back, along with Delgado and Teheran, we will have an effective pitching staff without spending money we obviously won’t have after extending some players and paying arb to others and locking several up when the time comes over the next couple of years.
Dealing because you’re upset like many fans here is a really stupid way to run a ball club.
Yeah you have to be really careful on who you trade. I don’t know who is out there, really, besides the names mentioned a thousand and one times. I have just never been so urgent as a fan to get a player as I am now. We are in desperate need of a true go to guy to put us near or at the level of those Nats.
July 1st, 20125:49 pm
But you can trade Minor if you want for that Top Line pitcher. He should get you what you’re looking for. Right.
By the body language on the field by some of the players it sounds as if all us “want to be” managers and gms take it more personally than the players.
Maybe it’ll be better next time!
God Bless and Peace to all
July 1st, 20125:51 pm
Minor has more value than you think, non contending teams have the freedom to let him pitch without sweating the early results, they can just focus on improvement. Like the braves of the late 80’s did.
I bet a package centered around Minor would bring us most any of the arms we need,
July 1st, 20125:52 pm
Matt Chernoff @RealMattlanta
So the #Braves signed Ben Sheets and they hope he can join the rotation after the AS break. Kris Medlen must be confused. I know I am.
DAmn, not even 20,000 at the game?
Too hot. That’s why I didn’t go.

MIBravesFan – Chipper’s statement basically put the poor play on the young guys. Ignoring the fact that he hardly plays, Uggla has been god awful, and Mac is having a pretty down year. It’s poor baseball all around not just the young guys tanking the team.”
The young starting pitchers have, at times, especially recently, been tanking the team. Dan was carrying the team at times earlier this season, and it’s not Chipper’s flippin’ fault he got whacked by that ball in Tampa (and yes he had a misplay recently because of that, and that should have stayed an error!), and I know BMac has had an off-season. I did not read Chipper’s comment as throwing the young guys under the bus, at all.
depends on who you want
July 1st, 20125:54 pm
nor did I read it that way either MIBF
July 1st, 20125:56 pm
CTB – Yopu have to have a longer view like WRen. Why do you think he’s refused to part with all the young pitching prospects, even knowing that they’d have to take their respective lumps? It’ s because top pitchers like Cain and others are receiving $20 mil per year deals and the Braves can’t afford to pay that kind of money when their salary level is pre-ordained to remain the same (yes, it DOES suck, but that’s the way it is).
By letting the Kids develop along with position players like Freeman, Simmons and Heyward, they can put together a good team for quite a few years. Maybe all the Kids won’t work out as they hope – happened many times before in all organizations – but you have to let them pitch.
I know many here wanted someone like Garza or Grienke, but honestly, Garza is basically a Number Three starter and we have a couple of those and Grienke, though he will claim Ace money, is still a 3.75 ERA career pitcher with only one really good season to his credit. He won’t be worth giving up one of the pitchers it would cost to get him and we can’t afford his contraxct going forward.
That 553 Post was on Point…
This Team Has not Clicked yet where all three aspects of the game are sound on a consistant basis
July 1st, 20125:58 pm
Why is Medlen confused? Not as if he’s actually pitched all that well.
July 1st, 20125:59 pm
TOBF – I want to see Kris pitch better out of the BP before suggesting he’s an answer for the rotation. He hasn’t been that great so far in the BP. It’s great to have him back, but nothing about his performance has indicated he really should be starting.
I’m Sick of this Weather and its just getting started
I’m SO Ready for fall and SEC Football
And you thought wrong NickB, as well as a lot of the people here that commented on how wrong it was. At any rate, I’m letting it go because I don’t like to be looked at as a total ass on here, and believe me, I have looked that way a lot in the past. Now you know.
To everyone else, I sincerely apologize for the things I said personally. Oh yeah, Uggla still sucks to no end!
I would say Greinke has 4 really good seasons to is credit (on of them being an amazing season)

I sure hope Sheets can produce, it would be an absolute coup if he could come pitch and put up a sub 4 ERA for the rest of the year.
if he doesn’t…. no big loss really, we gave up nothing for him
I don’t see much of anything special about 2010….
I love Uggla . I voted for him.

The braves have managed to play their worst baseball against the Nats. I want to give the Nats credit, they are a good team and have assembled quite the pitching staff but i’d be lying if I said the braves haven’t contributed to their win total in head to head matches. Errors, poor at-bats, and not so great starts by starters. Hudson has to do better, Minor was ok, and Delgado got done in by his defense. We’re playing the way people thought the Nats would, like a young team with room to grow while they are playing like a more veteran team, at least so far. Taking nothing away from the Nats because they are good, but this braves team should be playing better than this. The difference in these last 3 losses is not just lack of hitting with risp(although that would help big time) but lack of playing fundamental baseball. Have to play better at home and get back on track with the Cubs.
July 1st, 20126:06 pm
Meds Will Be in the Rotation in the 2nd half, Bank On It! With Petey Pablo Coming back there is no option…
July 1st, 20126:07 pm
well, he had a 5.1 WAR season that year….. but, I know, you don’t like WAR
as far as the guys who play all they time, they are an older team
July 1st, 20126:08 pm
Need to sweep the Chubs this week.
I guess I should reword that, they do not have as many young players as we do playing at the same time
July 1st, 20126:10 pm
It Doesn’t look right seeing Meds Coming out of the Pen…
Maybe Fredi doesn’t know that the Braves were 12-3 in his starts in 2010
The Tour de France has started and even if you don’t care about the bike racing you can see some absolutely beautiful aerial photography from the helicopters covering the race. It’s all in HD and the country and the architecture from the present back to the Middle Ages is so impressive.
The new NBC Sports Channel is covering it which is channel 603 on Directv.
Without Any Relevance ?
NickB – I don’t agree – he followed up his great year with a season where he posted an ERA of almost 4 runs per game (3.83) – he has a single season with an ERA under 3.47 yet will be paid because he had one great season. Keep in mind a lot of thos wins were as a result of a potent Brwers’ offense – not becuase Grienke pitched that well.
We are not going to be able to afford a $15-20illion price tag and that’s what it will take. AS a rental, it wont be worth the price and long term we can’t afford him.
Tomahawkin – I want Peter to come back and pitch great, and I believe he will, but I’m going to wait and see on the Meds part.
July 1st, 20126:11 pm
Meds ain’t starting if we pick one up.
Meds had a 4.23 ERA that year starting too, and he average 5.5 runs of support, not hard to get wins that way
July 1st, 20126:12 pm
I’m going by pitcher WAR , where he posted 4.1, 9.3, 5.1 and this years has a 3.6 with half the season left
I’d say no on Grienke. Any word on Dempster and when he will be back?
wait, 4.9 not 4.1
July 1st, 20126:13 pm
I declare war on WAR!!
July 1st, 20126:15 pm
I think the Braves will be lucky to split the series with the Cubs. Samardzija having a pretty good season, game 3 has lefty soft-tosser Malholm and we all know how the Braves do against that type of pitcher.
No offense to Venters, but right now he should not be brought into any close game right now. Either ship him off to AAA to right the ship or just let him throw mop up duty.
This team is a decent team. Not a WS winner imo, but they could be a WC playoff team.
On another note, I sure am tired of watching Uggla strike out over and over again, it’s getting old.
Off my box, everyone have a great day!

July 1st, 20126:16 pm
Best thing about Dempsters numbers? he is wayy better away than at home.
The more I look at his recent performance, the more I am starting to lean that way, though he did have a mediocre 2011
July 1st, 20126:17 pm
that and AUG and Sep are his best 2 months in his career
Gimper & McError (all star LESS)
Brian McCann’s record franchise streak of being named to the All-Star game in each of his first six full seasons ended as Buster Posey, Carlos Ruiz and Yadier Molina were named as National League catchers. McCann was hitting only .226, his lowest average ever at this point in a season.
No welfare vote for McCann? What is this world coming to? Oh right. Maybe ‘the world’ woke up and figured out the defensive liability who hits like crap doesn’t deserve a seat at the table!
July 1st, 20126:18 pm
postgame and All-Star selection QUOTAGE
I guess I should reword that, they do not have as many young players as we do playing at the same time
The Nats have an obvious edge over us in pitching, bullpen and starting, they are playing very solid baseball. I actually feel like our vets are letting us down more than our young guys with a few exceptions. Heyward is fighting his way back nicely while Freeman has had some injury setbacks, and since Simmons has been largely good. Minor is a disappointment but Delgado after a rough April has only really had one bad start and that was in Boston. The more established players not quite doing the job right now.
July 1st, 20126:19 pm
What do you think it would take to get dempster from the cubbies?
July 1st, 20126:20 pm
Thanks for the quotes, DOB
July 1st, 20126:21 pm
Meds realistically is a bottom of the rotation pitcher or at least he was. If he keeps pitching the way he has so far then we might as well keep Minor in there till we can find a better replacement elsewhere.
July 1st, 20126:22 pm
I reckon Minor ,Spruill and a low level would get it done, prices are gonna go down on rental players since the acquiring team can’t get draft picks for them anymore….
The Cubs are rebuilding, so to trade for anyone decent I feel the Cubs will be asking a lot. I watch a lot of Cubs games and though Garza and Dempster are pretty good, I don’t think it would be worth giving what Theo and Jed would want.
July 1st, 20126:23 pm
all three 22 year old starting position players have been real inconsistent over the season, though they are all doing well lately.Pastor/Simmons counting as one season long 22 year old player.
July 1st, 20126:28 pm
Wow. Venters is having one heckuva down season.
Hudson got clobber, but just not his day.
Gotta like what you’re seeing from Heyward and Freeman moving toward the break.
TOBF – I want to see Kris pitch better out of the BP before suggesting he’s an answer for the rotation. He hasn’t been that great so far in the BP. It’s great to have him back, but nothing about his performance has indicated he really should be starting
Agree. Just interesting to see Chernoff’s take on this. The Kris Medlen debacle is still bad though…
