Greinke, Garza, Dempster, Liriano, Vargas, Willingham, McCarthy………..

Can we please not trade for Jason Vargas? He’s being paid 4.85 million this year and will most likely make something around 6.5-7 million in 2013. I’d really rather not may him that much to be a 4/5 starter, but I guess if they’ve lost some confidence in the Minor/Delgado/Teheran trio – it makes a little more sense….I guess….

Can Sheets throw a knuckleball?

What a find by the Mets. I wonder if Dickey gets the nod to start the all-star game. Real shame that Beachy got hurt, would have been there as well. Both unexpected aces for the first half of 2012.

I honestly don’t think the Braves saw enough from Medlen the last six weeks to install him into the rotation. Even with the struggles of Minor, the pen needed an arm in it. Venters just hasn’t been there and I think EOF’s elbow isn’t 100%.

Its a big If, but I like the sign by the braves, low risk, high reward. We haven’t had much success in recent years with reclamation projects.

Mike Gonzalez has looked ok for the Nats, I was a little surprised we didn’t give him a look, don’t think he commanded that much. For them he just makes an already strong pen stronger. He’s not the Cobra of old but might have been a better late sign than Livan.

Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com reports that the Braves, Blue Jays, Yankees and other teams were scouting Francisco Liriano during Sunday’s start against the Royals.

ncbravesfan90

July 1st, 2012
8:48 pm

Per MLB Trade Rumors:

Look for Atlanta to join the pursuit of Zach Greinke’s services if the team can secure him long-term for closer to $15MM per season than $20MM, tweets David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Greinke, 28, is enjoying a strong season in his second year with the Brewers after being acquired from the Royals in December 2010. The right-hander has posted a 2.82 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 through 16 starts.

The Braves were among a series of teams scouting Francisco Liriano today during his start against the Royals, reports Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com (via Twitter). While Liriano failed to turn in a quality start on Sunday, the former All-Star has improved his performance each month of the season thus far. The 28-year-old signed a one-year, $5.5MM deal with the Twins in January and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season.

Jake W – but they did before, and if Eddie (who caught him with the Brewers) liked what he saw, maybe Ben will be a heck of a find for the Braves. And there is nothing lost in giving it a chance!

I also wonder if the Braves are asking a lot of long term questions in regards to McCann right now. If they decide that they cannot afford McCann while extending Heyward, Freeman, Simmons, Kimbrel, Beachy (assuming he recovers as expected from TJ) while possibly extending Bourn and getting another pitcher – do they think of trading him now to maximize his value?

We could trade McCann for a significant haul of prospects and/or major league ready talent. A true impact pitcher will cost significant prospects and money – we could use McCann’s expected salary to help offset this new pitchers salary over the coming years and flip prospects for this pitcher or to replinish our system.

Not saying it is the right move but do the Braves consider it? Do we try the Yankees for Gary sanchez (he is a true stud prospect at C – seen him play), Manny Banuelos, and Dellin Betances (or one of the two pitchers plus another player or two)? To the Angels for Bourjos, ervin Santana, and johnny Hellweg/Garret Richards?

I obviously am not a GM (as evidenced above) but the Braves could replenish their farm, get arms, and clear salary for the next 5-6 years by moving McCann. They would though be trading arguably the top catcher of the last 4 years, a current fan favorite/local boy/Braves icon.

I don’t see them doing it but if/when it is discussed I bet there are some fiery opinions

I know, never said anything negative about the sign. Was just joking about the knuckleball thing. Dickey is a nice story though as was Beachy.

Not many people would have guessed when Beachy was called up that he would have had a chance to be an all-star and had he’d been healthy he probably would have been in.

Disgusted: The Braves resumed the shuttle buses this year, so you can get there on public transportation from anywhere in the metro area (park and ride). The stadium parking lots are safe and well patrolled during the games, so you can park safe if you drive. But I wouldn’t go out among the surrounding areas during the day, much less at night. I don’t think building a new stadium outside the perimeter would help much…if the Braves are winning and competitive, the fans will come.

how could you not look at trading McCann? Hasn’t had a year as good as 2008 despite being dead in the middle of his prime in 4 years. Defense is what it is and will regress quickly. Offense has evolved into below average. Someone would give two young starters for him and free up $13M for two more players in the $5 to $8 range. 4 starters for a player in clear decline.

IN 2013 we will be blackmailed into signing him to an overpriced contract or giving him away. Now or this off season is the time to move

most catchers can’t hit, Mac is struggling, that’s for sure, but before hi injury last year he was ahead of 2008’s pace (which looks to be a bit flukey babip wise)

This is how bad catcher hitting is, even as bad as Mac has been, he’s still 10th in MLB in catcher production. If he can get his OPS back up near .800, he will be right back to being in the top 5 again.

Other clubs think the Phillies would have a really tough time getting anything close to their asking trade price of 4-5 prospects for Hamels

Really? Why would that be? Maybe because 2 months of any player in the sport is not worth 4-5 prospects(2 being A+, apparently). And you get nothing for him after the season. Not a thing.

The best-case scenario for these deals is Carlos Beltran for Zack Wheeler. That’s the absolute best a team can hope for for 2 months of a player.
