Bizarre 1st inning – Kershaw hits first guy and picks him off – walk – Wright single – RBI single, Wright to third batter thrown out at 2nd…
Where is Jeffrey D at?
We Have a Trap Series Against The AAA Iowa Cubs this week…

Greinke, Garza, Dempster, Liriano, Vargas, Willingham, McCarthy………..
Can we please not trade for Jason Vargas? He’s being paid 4.85 million this year and will most likely make something around 6.5-7 million in 2013. I’d really rather not may him that much to be a 4/5 starter, but I guess if they’ve lost some confidence in the Minor/Delgado/Teheran trio – it makes a little more sense….I guess….
I’m at home
July 1st, 20128:24 pm
So, basically, Kershaw faces 5 batters, 1 HBP, 1 BB, 2 singles…
July 1st, 20128:25 pm
I would love to be a fly on the wall when FW has organizational and brainstorming meetings running through different scenarios. Which pitcher to add, who to extend, etc. Is there an affordable bat out there?
July 1st, 20128:27 pm
Vargas has given up a home run in each of his last 10 starts.

Shocking – the Dodgers score…
I dont Hate Harper, In Fact I like That Justin Barbie Song (Boyfriend) That he comes out to

Stop the presses!!! (Lately!)
Can Sheets throw a knuckleball?
What a find by the Mets. I wonder if Dickey gets the nod to start the all-star game. Real shame that Beachy got hurt, would have been there as well. Both unexpected aces for the first half of 2012.
July 1st, 20128:31 pm
brian – flies on the wall can’t post on the blog and tell them what to do!
July 1st, 20128:34 pm
If Ben Sheets can pitch, he doesn’t need to throw a knuckleball!
July 1st, 20128:37 pm
Uggla needs a day off
July 1st, 20128:38 pm
Heck, Braves once started Satchel Paige in a game when he was about 46. Sign, ole Satch up or did he pass away?
holy storms…I’m getting hail
July 1st, 20128:39 pm
I honestly don’t think the Braves saw enough from Medlen the last six weeks to install him into the rotation. Even with the struggles of Minor, the pen needed an arm in it. Venters just hasn’t been there and I think EOF’s elbow isn’t 100%.
Sheets is 33….why are people making these over the hill jokes and comparisons to old people?
July 1st, 20128:42 pm
If Ben Sheets can pitch, he doesn’t need to throw a knuckleball!
Its a big If, but I like the sign by the braves, low risk, high reward. We haven’t had much success in recent years with reclamation projects.
Mike Gonzalez has looked ok for the Nats, I was a little surprised we didn’t give him a look, don’t think he commanded that much. For them he just makes an already strong pen stronger. He’s not the Cobra of old but might have been a better late sign than Livan.

Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com reports that the Braves, Blue Jays, Yankees and other teams were scouting Francisco Liriano during Sunday’s start against the Royals.
July 1st, 20128:48 pm
Per MLB Trade Rumors:
Look for Atlanta to join the pursuit of Zach Greinke’s services if the team can secure him long-term for closer to $15MM per season than $20MM, tweets David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Greinke, 28, is enjoying a strong season in his second year with the Brewers after being acquired from the Royals in December 2010. The right-hander has posted a 2.82 ERA with 9.0 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 through 16 starts.
The Braves were among a series of teams scouting Francisco Liriano today during his start against the Royals, reports Phil Mackey of 1500ESPN.com (via Twitter). While Liriano failed to turn in a quality start on Sunday, the former All-Star has improved his performance each month of the season thus far. The 28-year-old signed a one-year, $5.5MM deal with the Twins in January and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2012 season.
July 1st, 20128:51 pm
Jake W – but they did before, and if Eddie (who caught him with the Brewers) liked what he saw, maybe Ben will be a heck of a find for the Braves. And there is nothing lost in giving it a chance!
July 1st, 20128:52 pm
I also wonder if the Braves are asking a lot of long term questions in regards to McCann right now. If they decide that they cannot afford McCann while extending Heyward, Freeman, Simmons, Kimbrel, Beachy (assuming he recovers as expected from TJ) while possibly extending Bourn and getting another pitcher – do they think of trading him now to maximize his value?
We could trade McCann for a significant haul of prospects and/or major league ready talent. A true impact pitcher will cost significant prospects and money – we could use McCann’s expected salary to help offset this new pitchers salary over the coming years and flip prospects for this pitcher or to replinish our system.
Not saying it is the right move but do the Braves consider it? Do we try the Yankees for Gary sanchez (he is a true stud prospect at C – seen him play), Manny Banuelos, and Dellin Betances (or one of the two pitchers plus another player or two)? To the Angels for Bourjos, ervin Santana, and johnny Hellweg/Garret Richards?
I obviously am not a GM (as evidenced above) but the Braves could replenish their farm, get arms, and clear salary for the next 5-6 years by moving McCann. They would though be trading arguably the top catcher of the last 4 years, a current fan favorite/local boy/Braves icon.
I don’t see them doing it but if/when it is discussed I bet there are some fiery opinions
July 1st, 20128:56 pm
Btw, Jake, that Mike is in the Rangers’ BP – not doing his Cobra move, but effective the last time I saw him
July 1st, 20128:57 pm
And there is nothing lost in giving it a chance!
I know, never said anything negative about the sign. Was just joking about the knuckleball thing. Dickey is a nice story though as was Beachy.
Not many people would have guessed when Beachy was called up that he would have had a chance to be an all-star and had he’d been healthy he probably would have been in.
July 1st, 20128:58 pm
How can some of you be so obtuse?
July 1st, 20129:00 pm
I’m a cute.
He’s in the Nats pen, went unsigned this offseason. Signed with them.
July 1st, 20129:01 pm
Kudos Jake W. You’re a good blogger! I’m going to sign off before I say anything else stupid! I love this blog! And I’m very fond of a lot of the bloggers! I’ll shut up now!

Funny how we are resigned to shopping at the sunnyvale retirement home community or walter read hospital for signings. loaf anderson, raul mondesi, sheets, et al. geez. wren’s inability to spend wisely is a serious issue. the low obp garbage that he brings has to stop. when we need serious help right away we go get sheets? unreal
July 1st, 20129:03 pm
Good sign Braves are on the trail for some pitching help even after the Sheets signing. Still, pitching is a hot commodity any time, so competition will be very feirce.
July 1st, 20129:04 pm
One last thought – it’s always great when people talk in equations!
July 1st, 20129:06 pm
I lied! I’m not leaving! POed!
July 1st, 20129:07 pm
I guess is folks are really concerned about the anxiety issues and his being able to handle a big market, then I suppose he might be in line for a contract around what Jered Weaver got – 5 years, 85 million.
I suppose the Braves would find that more reasonable, but I still can’t see them offering a starting pitcher that much money.
McFann :Ô: :Ô: :ô:
July 1st, 20129:08 pm
brian We could trade McCann
July 1st, 20129:15 pm
Did I break it?…
July 1st, 20129:16 pm
No, McFann – not your fault in any way.
July 1st, 20129:17 pm
Not in an obtuse triangle… … carnies…
July 1st, 20129:18 pm
July 1st, 20129:19 pm
Y’all need to get your swag back.
it would be the same per year the gave Lowe…
You never said an obtuse triangle.
July 1st, 20129:21 pm
I completely agree with those that suggest that we check the market for potential return on McCann. The longer that you wait the lesser the return
The trade Mac thing cracks me up, who plays catcher? Ross? nope, he gets exposed everyday and becomes pretty darned lousy. Bethancourt isn’t ready (nor are any of these prospects discusses or they would be starting)
Barring a total breakdown for the rest of 2012 AND 2013, I reckon Mac is prolly 95% to be extended
they might go that Efrim, but guessing it likely needs to be a bit cheaper
July 1st, 20129:22 pm
Ever notice Uggla messes with his cup a lot when talking it up to an opposing player at 2nd base? What are they talking about?
yeah the trade Mac is pretty silly stuff
July 1st, 20129:23 pm
Disgusted: The Braves resumed the shuttle buses this year, so you can get there on public transportation from anywhere in the metro area (park and ride). The stadium parking lots are safe and well patrolled during the games, so you can park safe if you drive. But I wouldn’t go out among the surrounding areas during the day, much less at night. I don’t think building a new stadium outside the perimeter would help much…if the Braves are winning and competitive, the fans will come.
Dan is just tipping his cap early for the expected loss Brian
July 1st, 20129:24 pm
hiya ken, how you doing
July 1st, 20129:25 pm
how could you not look at trading McCann? Hasn’t had a year as good as 2008 despite being dead in the middle of his prime in 4 years. Defense is what it is and will regress quickly. Offense has evolved into below average. Someone would give two young starters for him and free up $13M for two more players in the $5 to $8 range. 4 starters for a player in clear decline.
IN 2013 we will be blackmailed into signing him to an overpriced contract or giving him away. Now or this off season is the time to move
Trade nolie. Annoying as shyt.
July 1st, 20129:26 pm
Brian, and it looks like the have scaled back on all the damn hugging, too. That got a little weird at times.
Yeah nolie, it looks gay though. He does while smiling, too. A bit creepy. But who’s gonna stop him with those pop eyes?
They gave Lowe 2 million a year less and one less guaranteed year – 4 years, 60 million.
If Wren is really not liking the Minor/Delgado/Teheran trio, then maybe he gives Greinke 5 years, 85 million, however I still don’t see it.
July 1st, 20129:29 pm
I definitely give Greinke 5 years, 85 million if he’ll take it. This truly gives the Braves their ace they have been needing.
Our district manager is a married man with kids. He swings his hips when he walks and says “heeeeey” in a boy george sorta way. Who’s gonna tell him to do otherwise though?
So, the New York Mets may be 44-36 after tonight…..
Anyone have some thoughts on that?
bourn should have been dealt weeks ago. go back and look at my posts. his obp has quickly reverted closer to mean. go read baseball prospectus; empirical evidence suggests that players less than 30 yrs of age tend to perform exceptionally well in contract years.
MIBravesFan not your fault in any way.
Thanks. Woulda tied in with the rest of my day, though—or at least a significant chunk of it…
July 1st, 20129:30 pm
most catchers can’t hit, Mac is struggling, that’s for sure, but before hi injury last year he was ahead of 2008’s pace (which looks to be a bit flukey babip wise)
This is how bad catcher hitting is, even as bad as Mac has been, he’s still 10th in MLB in catcher production. If he can get his OPS back up near .800, he will be right back to being in the top 5 again.
I myself am not concerned with Mac until it’s July of 2013 and nothing has changed.
July 1st, 20129:31 pm
Hey! BMac caught all nine innings of a game where the temps on the field were almost 120 degrees! He must be in really good shape!!!
[Runs off, whooping and hollering…]
i thought you said $15 mill a year
July 1st, 20129:34 pm
Fo’ real. Let’s see a toothpick try and do that.
Manager Blutarski…Dean Wormer is on line one.
Ben Sheets looks to be a big upside, low risk signing. Now get Greinke and the braves rotation looks tough.
July 1st, 20129:35 pm
nolie, trying to stay cool and busy with family illnesses and eBay. I scan the blog, but haven’t had much time to jump in.
My DVR is getting full, too. Falling Skies and True Blood are really good again, but haven’t watched a lot of others.
Hope you are well.
July 1st, 20129:36 pm
nolie, kidding, you da man!
July 1st, 20129:39 pm
5 years, 85 million – 17 per year
July 1st, 20129:41 pm
July 1st, 2012
So, the New York Mets may be 44-36 after tonight…..
The Mutts will come back to the pack.
McCann was nowhere to be seen today, though. Probably at home sleeping all day. Out of shape wimp!
I didn’t have to, the topic was obtusenicity…
July 1st, 20129:42 pm
Sopheee Let’s see a toothpick try and do that.
Strasburg’s a stickman. Just sayin’…
July 1st, 20129:44 pm
Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
Other clubs think the Phillies would have a really tough time getting anything close to their asking trade price of 4-5 prospects for Hamels
Really? Why would that be? Maybe because 2 months of any player in the sport is not worth 4-5 prospects(2 being A+, apparently). And you get nothing for him after the season. Not a thing.
The best-case scenario for these deals is Carlos Beltran for Zack Wheeler. That’s the absolute best a team can hope for for 2 months of a player.
July 1st, 20129:45 pm
I will say it and admit I was wrong laterif I’m worng, but I will predict right now that we get Greinke. One thing going for the Braves already might be that Greinke has said before he grew up a huge Braves fan, idolized Smoltz. He maybe, just maybe, signs a slight discount to accommodate the Bravos. They obviously have what it takes to get him right now, but the extension thing will be a key.
July 1st, 20129:46 pm
I saw him in a clip from the Salute to The Troops—he was standing with a Member of the Service, as were all the players…
Didn’t see him in the dugout, though. But then again, the dugout seemed strangely empty today. Maybe some of the guys that weren’t playing stayed back in the tunnel and out of the heat…
July 1st, 20129:47 pm
“Now don’t get purposefully obtuse with me, Andy!…”
July 1st, 20129:48 pm
So if the Giants hadn’t drafted Wheeler one pick in front of where the Braves took Minor, what might have been . . . . It’s really annoying that they traded him to the Mets, isn.t it?!
July 1st, 20129:52 pm
something is up with the all star vote in thing, I have voted for chipper 78 times already
July 1st, 20129:53 pm
McFann, just giving you a hard time.
My brother likes McCann a lot. Coming from him that’s saying something. Getting that dude to like anybody or anything, other than his beer , is big news.
Do you want to know how bad McCann’s offense is? Look at this carefully
…………. BA OBP SLG 0PS
………….333 388 572 961 Best year
………… 226 295 385 679 This year
………….282 354 478 832 Career average
…………107…..93….94…282 Below Career norms
July 1st, 20129:55 pm
All with one address, right, Nick? I don’t think you have to do the multi-e-mail address thing with the 34th player vote, do you? Chipper needs to win this vote!
I know his numbers are lousy this year, but he’s still above avg in offense at catcher
I was pointing out how bad league catching is , not really commenting on Mac per se
July 1st, 20129:56 pm
Aw…:) Guess BMac’s got something after all!…
July 1st, 20129:57 pm
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the last time McCann was consistantly hot as a firecracker was spring training ‘11. That was when we were all saying “save it for the season”. He’s been so up and down, and down mostly this year, since then.
Jeepers! We KNOW what BMac’s numbers are! GYAH!! Don’t need folks shovin’ ‘em in our face at all hours of the night!…
before he got hurt last year Mac’s OPS was like .897
July 1st, 20129:59 pm
It’s 9:59 in GA and MI time zone, McFann . . .
Steve from OH
July 1st, 201210:00 pm
Hard to believe, but I think a return to reality is coming…
July 1st, 201210:01 pm
McCann has a lot going for him with the Braves other than just stats he puts up. A team leader, a guy they want young players coming up to copy. It is frustrating watching him like this, but my gut says he will still be here a while.
It DOES seem hard to believe that their other 3 pitchers and offense can maintain this level of production
July 1st, 201210:02 pm
I hope so, Steve! Didn’t the Braves bust up R.A. Dickey very badly in a game earlier this season?
BMac was pretty hot May-mid July last year. Was killin’ it with the homers for a while there…
I thought his ST in 2011 was mediocre, and I was saying how that was good because his mediocre STs had led to very good seasons in previous years, and vice versa…or maybe that was 2010…?
July 1st, 201210:04 pm
I think Dickey is for real, he’s doing it for too long to be a fluke, but guys like Dillon Gee and Chris Young can’t last
July 1st, 201210:05 pm
