Still catching up on what I missed, but I see 3 of the Nationals runs scored with two outs with one run coming on a two-out single by the pitcher. That stuff gets old and needs to stop.
It’s not getting beat so much as it is the DANG INCONSISTENCY…..
17 hits the other night, lots of runs and right back to nearly nothing.
Oh well, the real and true fans out there are ok with it.
June 29th, 20129:29 pm
Yup, the Diaz defenders are using his split stats to justify carrying a guy on the roster based purely on 62 ABs. The guy is mediocre in the field, can’t throw runners out, his baserunning blunders are Braves folklore, and even if you use his lefthanders-only OPS of .780 he’d be next-to-last of the position players (only Mac is worse).
If the guy is that situational, then he should be a pinch-hitter. Oh wait, he sucks as a PH!
I know the nats wish they could play the braves all the time.
Can Of Corn
Frank, making a blockbuster deal to acquire another key player with this manager is ill-advised.
First replace this manager with someone who’s truly competent!
June 29th, 20129:30 pm
I am not boiling mad because I accept that this team is not good enough. At least for now.
Delgado is not there yet and neither is Minor.
And Freeman is not where he can be by mid decade. Too much inexperience, not enough from the veterans whom you have to count on (Chipper, Mc Cann, Uggla) so its a frustratingly inconisistent team.
Oh, they can tease you for a time but will break your heart in a moments notice.
Tell me that is NOT a fair assessment.
I think our biggest problem is that we have no viable options beyond our main starting 8 and Ross. Diaz? Wilson? Francisco? Hinske? Ugh.
Someone needs to get a life.
I can understand perturbed, a bit ticked, stuff like that, but boiling mad? Absurd.
June 29th, 20129:31 pm
Good work, Varvaro.
Varvaro looked good.
June 29th, 20129:32 pm
We do have 2 hits, 2, really 3 errors and 5 LOB….
What’s not to like?
I don’t mind losing every now and then (cuz, well, we have to), but it does get tiring losing to the Nats. And even that wouldn’t be so bad if we could beat the NL east at a better rate. Well, there’s time to improve. Uggla and Mac haven’t gotten hot yet.
June 29th, 20129:33 pm
and regarding the trade rumor from Jayson Stark, in what world is Jason Vargas an “impact starting pitcher”?
Minor pitching tomorrow, right? How many games can we keep giving away?
And don’t give me any of that football mentality crap. I’ve been a baseball fan for going on 50 yrs.– this team gives away too many games.
I know the ups and downs of a 162-game season. How much did we miss out on the wild card last year. STOP giving away games!!!
The fact that Mike Minor is still on the 25-man roster is absurd.
I admit that when I saw the lineup tonight, i paused for a moment…..
Then i remembered that FG came up with it.
June 29th, 20129:34 pm
2 hits let’s go Bravos…..let’s dog this pitcher
Given our pitching troubles, I’d love to see Fredi take a risk and start Martinez or Varvaro or Medlen. Certainly can’t do worse than the last several Delgado-Minor starts.
June 29th, 20129:35 pm
I’m boiling mad and I’m not gonna take it any more!
Nah, just doesn’t have the same ring.
June 29th, 20129:36 pm
Dump Jack Wilson.. Bring back Pastornicky–at least he can hit. Dump Francisco, and bring up one of those right-handed hitting outfielders from AAA.
Bad Jason has come back in a hurry…
How does a hitter get sawed off on an outside pitch?
The A Bomb
June 29th, 20129:37 pm
Being carved up by Detweiler, who’s burying location tonight.
Tomorrow, we’ll see our soft-toss lefty giving up shots they’ll be picking up on Cape Canaveral radar.
“Then again, we’re the East Coast Padres now. Broke and we’re in a division with 4 of the biggest spenders in baseball. Get ready for many years of this. As long as Liberty media owns their little pet, we’re screwed”
In a few yrs we will get there. Even if the francise value appreciates due to the Dodgers and supposed Padres sales, with capital gains tax rates expected to go up, that is less incentive for Liberty to sell, so we are screwed for the forseeable future.
Depends on what happens in the election and the tax issues. For now it ;looks like status quo.
June 29th, 20129:38 pm
Bad Chipper is in town tonight too….sigh.
I guess this pitcher IS pretty good though.
And Mac continues his fine hitting since declaring himself fixed 2 weeks ago.
I hate first pitch outs about as much as I hate 7 pitch innings. Down 4-0, I fail to see that as being that intelligent.
June 29th, 20129:39 pm
Can’t they at least lay off the first pitch!?
Almost nobody liked the Minor pick when he was first drafted and Minor is not doing much to distinguish himself.
Expect a belt whuppin tommorrow.
There’s so much wrong with this idea…. Pastornicky doesn’t need to rot on the bench right now, let him keep working in AAA. Rev will be back and ready next year, maybe even this playoffs! No need to dump Francisco unless we’re bringing up a 3B… don’t think Prado (a starting OF) should be the only backup to Chipper.
“Disgusted” is right-on, I’m afraid.
June 29th, 20129:40 pm
Martin Prado would have caught that ball. Shucks.
Overheard in Nats dugout:
Detwiler, wiping off his face as he sits down, leaning over to Harper: “dude, I had this deja-vu like feeling just now, thinking I was down at AAA for a rehab start, This can’t be a major league lineup. I mean, these guys can’t even get it out of the infield.”
Harper, with a cocky smirk, replies: “nah, these are the Braves, and now they are our b**** !”
June 29th, 20129:41 pm
For those supporting Diaz because he got a hit tonight…
wise up. He was 0-14 before that hit and most of those against lefties.
Agree w/ the guy who posted this isn,’t 2009. He blows and kills us off the bench cause we only got 2.5 RH bats off bench. It’s well past time to get a better option than him.
Seems like my stance of show me some consistency before declaring yourself “fixed” holds true again…. though Mac hasn’t been too too bad, just bad.
More statement from the Braves.
And the second level left fielder lumbers after a fly……was he backed up by a raccoon?
Harper is one fugly dude.
June 29th, 20129:43 pm
@tmc: be careful, dude, there are a lot of Matty-lovers on the blog, and they think that he’s the bomb.
June 29th, 20129:45 pm
Does every other player from the Dominican player wear a mohawk?
“This team as presently constituted…” The Fwick and Fgrack show has run its course.
If anyone deserves a “celebratory beer” tonight it’s Mike Rizzo, who’s one of the five best GMs in baseball. Wren’s not in the same area code. Nats are so much better than the Braves it’s not even close. You see it almost every game these teams have played this season.
ATLANTA##@@####@###@####.SH&**%%$$###!!!!!…THAT’S YOUR TEAM!!!!
June 29th, 20129:46 pm
That was a wretched play by Matt….and i like the guy.
“and even if you use his lefthanders-only OPS of .780 he’d be next-to-last of the position players (only Mac is worse).”
Versus LHP, his OPS is better than Bourn, McCann, Heyward, and Freeman.
Diaz is bush league brah
Evan Gattis is the answer.
Hey, we need better players than Diaz and I have my doubts he will be in the major leagues after this yr.
As a late bloomer to MLB, he has not had a bad career at all, got the most of his ability but time is comming up.
The whole bench has been disappointing this yr, they have not given us the lift thay they have given us the last couple yrs. Hinske has not been good either. Ross, while not bad has not given the same lift he did last couple yrs.
Down year for the bench and the bullpen save for Kimbrell.
June 29th, 20129:47 pm
More quality work from Varvaro.
not sure what the question was???
Joe Simpson is being exceptionally annoying tonight. Notice this when Glavine is in the booth. He also seems in love with the Nats and Yankees. He drools over Desmond and Harper.
June 29th, 20129:48 pm
Yeah, “THAT’S YOUR TEAM” uh-huh. “Your Atlanta Braves!” Who can only be viewed over-the-air (not pay cable) once or twice a week. Alrighty!
June 29th, 20129:49 pm
Words of wisdom from FG’s favorite book titled “Sayings I Live By”: The 50-50-90 rule- Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there’s a 90% probability you will get it wrong.
I used to like Diaz in his first go round w/ Braves.
But he’s been below avg for the last few years.
Detwiler is having a blast. You can’t wipe the grin off his face. I can easily see why.
June 29th, 20129:51 pm
Position players the Braves have that do not belong on a major league roster:
Wilson, Diaz, Francisco.
Especially the Braves roster if we want to win games.
June 29th, 20129:52 pm
yell the nats are having such a good ol time at the teddy.
Braves still can’t hit LHP.
Only a HBP can get these losers on base.
Best offense in baseball.
June 29th, 20129:53 pm
Nice opportunity to score now. Do it!
will we cash in or cash out?
Nats have swagger…..Braves need to have Medlen replace Delgado in starting rotation and trade Minor for a pitcher
June 29th, 20129:54 pm
Chatt you are so right…even after that base to make it runners 1st and 2nd…laughing it up w the catcher
man, the trolls are out tonight…. i’ll be around
Definition of a “miracle”—The Braves scoring even one run right here.
You know something, this pitcher for the Nats is pretty good, but he ain’t that damm good so what does that tell you about the Braves, tellsme they ain’t worth a s*it!
@Rick: I was comparing his LH OPS with the other players’ TOTAL OPS. Because if you want to play that split stuff, his “best” split OPS is lower than almost every other Brave’s “best” split. Only B-Mac, Hinske, Francisco, and Wilson do not have a split OPS higher than Diaz.
So, Diaz is not good enough from one side to alone justify his spot on the roster. Wilson, Francisco, and Hinske are just not good enough period.
But he’s able to PH…..
I give up.
June 29th, 20129:55 pm
Diaz has not been good the last two years. He was a good bench player for us in 2006 and 07, had a down yr in 08, was good again in 2009 and 2010 and was not that good last yr and this yr well, it is what it is.
He gave us 4 good yrs out of 5 from 06 to 10.
One of the good guys in the game who got the most of what he had. He could have given the game up but carved out a 10 yr career.
There is a place for Matt Diaz in the game down the line.
trade Minor for a pitcher
Which teams are lining up to trade a superior pitcher for Minor, exactly?
June 29th, 20129:56 pm
“Nats have swagger…..Braves need to have Medlen replace Delgado in starting rotation and trade Minor for a pitcher”
No one wants Minor. Not now.
‘teen ‘teen time.
June 29th, 20129:57 pm
“Which teams are lining up to trade a superior pitcher for Minor, exactly?”
If someone knows the answer, please let me know. I’ve got a “can’t miss” real estate deal for them.
IlliniBrave, the point that he hits LHP better than half of the starting lineup still remains. What bench players do you think the Braves should have gotten that are within their budget?
What the heck, Wilson? You’re not Chipper or B-Mac. Why can’t you score from second there?
But he’s able to PH
Which we were told 4 hours ago…
Prado – solid! not laughing anymore…
The blog is an uplifting read tonight
Shutout is gone, that is a victory within itself now.
The only problem with Minor is that he’s awful. Worst in MLB awful. Other than that he’s great.
June 29th, 20129:58 pm
Teeennnnnnnnnnnnn! Gotta score at least 3 here, the washington pen is tough.
Prado=Gold…. give him 5 yrs this offseason
Good job with the sac fly, Michael!
June 29th, 20129:59 pm
Rick: not sure, since I don’t know the budget and don’t know who was available. But Diaz is clearly part of one of the weakest benches in the NL.
Michael Bourne is a heckuva ballplayer. Pay the man, cheapskates!
The morons are scoriiiiing!
I guess Fredi Finally decided Prado was well enough to play. We need a manager
Prado is our best ball player. Has been for a couple years.
Sac fly works for me
June 29th, 201210:00 pm
“OnlyBravesFan” who the hell are you? The arbiter of blog comments? Whatever, dude.
June 29th, 201210:01 pm
The braves can have Delgado or minor in the fifth starter spot but they cannot have both in the rotation. Delgado is not ready and minor is still too streaky
I meant why not just play the guy if he’s able to PH…..
No sh*t he actually could do it.
Posts talking to the players continue to be hilarious. Good analysis.
IlliniBrave, you bitch about their bench but can’t name even one player who you think they should have gotten?
Rico, he said before the game that Prado would be available to pinch hit.
