In his past 44 games, he’s hit .348 with 22 multi-hit games, 19 extra-base hits and an .895 OPS, but he still seems to get overlooked in a Braves offense that’s had a dynamic leadoff man, Michael Bourn, in front of him, and at least one streaking slugger at any given time somewhere in the batting order behind him — first Freddie Freeman, then Dan Uggla, and for the past four weeks, Jason Heyward.

Prado is having a career-best season, but isn't satisfied and insists he's had too many bad games and too many wasted at-bats.
And so, the hitter who leads the Braves in batting average (.317), on-base percentage (.377) and positions played (three), and ranks 24th in the NL in OPS (.838) between Bryce Harper (.841) and David Freese (.829), continues to get largely overshadowed.
But that’s OK with Martin Prado, who just wants to do his job and thinks he can do it even better. That’s despite the fact that the 2010 All-Star – at second base, by the way, not one of the three positions he’s played this season — is having a career-best season.
Here’s what he said when I asked him at Boston last weekend whether he’s had such a long stretch of games where he felt so consistent and locked in at the plate.
“Actually I don’t feel like that. To be honest with you, I feel like I’ll have two good games and then a sh***y game, or maybe one good game, then two bad ones,” he said. “Overall it’s a little consistent, but I feel like sometimes I just waste at least one or two at-bats a game. Which is something I don’t want to do.
“But sometimes I feel like I’m taking too many pitches right down the zone, because I want to learn to pick my spot. And sometimesI feel like if I want to be aggressive, I want to swing at a first-pitch fastball and if they throw me something else, I’m swinging automatically because in my mind I’m ready to swing. Just more like, trying to take a pitch and then go from there. I’m still trying to be consistent with that.”
When it comes to being perfectionsts and their own toughest critics, Prado and Brandon Beachy are along among Braves. In fact, I dare say you won’t find many ballplayers anywhere who are tougher on themselves than these two.
“He gets a couple of hits every night, makes a couple of nice plays defensively, either at third or first or left field,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He’s a baseball player.”
Gonzalez smiles when asked about the nearly impossible standards that Prado sets for himself.
“Bourney laughs at him,” Gonzalez said. “Martin will line out in his first two at-bats and come into the dugout and throw his helmet and everything, and Bourney will said, ‘You’re crazy.’”

Chipper Jones got back in the (home run) swing of things on Wednesday.
Prado said: “Yes. I’m not satisfied. I feel blessed. I’m happy with that. But I’m always looking for something new. Always.”
He said that while batting in the 2-hole most of the season, he’s tried to get on base as often as possible, “to give me a chance and my teammates a chance to score runs. That’s what I’m looking for.”
His .377 OBP is his highest since he posted that exact total in 78 games (254 at-bats) in 2008, his first season in the majors with as many as 30 games or more than 62 plate appearances.
Prado’s .365 average against lefty pitchers is the fifth-highest in the National League, and his .338 home average is tied for ninth in the NL with Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun.
Braves No. 2 hitters lead the NL in average (.322) and rank second in OBP (.379) and OPS (.859). Prado has accounted for 269 of the team’ 298 at-bats in the 2-hole, with Heyward and Chipper Jones also excelling in 11 at-bats apiece from that spot, totaling 10 hits, two homers and 10 RBIs between them in the 2-hole.
With the surging Heyward’s move to the 2-hole this week, Prado should be able to help boost the Braves’ production from the third spot in the order, where they rank last in the NL in average (.206) and OBP (.277). From the No. 3 spot, Freeman has hit .232 with a .298 OBP in 151 at-bats, and Brian McCann has hit just .191 (18-for-94) with a .255 OBP.
As far as anyone can tell, Prado doesn’t care where he hits or where he plays in the field.
“He can play anywhere,” Braves first-base (and former hitting) coach Terry Pendleton said. “You could probably put the catcher’s gear on him and he could probably do it. He might not want to, but he could probably do it. He can play anywhere out there.”
Since Prado’s days in the minor leagues and then as a bench player, Pendleton was always one of the Braves coaches who was in his corner and believed he’d hit if and when he got a chance.
“There are some guys you just know can play,” Pendleton said. “No matter where you put them, they’ll perform. They do what they do. He just plays. All you want them to do.”
Prado’s philosophy is simple. “I always tell my teammates, if you’re healthy, if you’re working hard and do everything the right way, good things are going to happen,” he said. “Right now the most important thing for me, before the All-Star break I want my team to be up there. Then take the break and go back at it after the All-Star game. That’s all I want right now.”
BRAVES LINEUP
• Kimbrel-ing hitters: He just turned 24 last month, and Craig Kimbrel has already established himself as the best and most dominant closer in the National League and arguably all of baseball.
After a remarkable rookie season in which he made the All-Star team, won the NL Rookie of the Year award by a huge margin and finished ninth in the Cy Young voting, while tying for the league lead in saves and posting a 2.10 ERA with 127 strikeouts and 32 walks in 77 innings, Kimbrel is having an even better season in 2012, while being used more prudently in hopes of avoiding a repeat of his late September fade.
Kimbrel leads the league with 22 saves (in 23 chances) and leads the NL relievers with a 1.29 ERA and opponents’ batting average (.125), having moved past Cincinnati flamethrower Aroldis Chapman in the latter stat as well as strikeouts per nine innings (15.85), where Kimbrel now leads the majors. Chapman is at 15.1 per nine, and his overall performance has plummeted since soon after his move from setup to closer.
Some have the mentality and physical tools to excel above others in the closer role, where there is no safety net and no one to pick you up when you struggle, unlike the seventh- or eighth-inning relief role. Many have one but not the other – the mentality or the stuff, but not both.
Some who don’t have it initially might someday become top closers. But I’m of the belief that most of the time, the very best ones display the intangibles for the role either from the outset or soon after they’ve moved into the role.
Kimbrel has both, obviously. The utterly overpowering fastball and slider combination, and the mentality – despite his boyish looks – to move past a blown save.
We haven’t seen him enough in the postseason to know that he can do the same thing on that pressure-filled stage, but I’ve seen enough of his pitching in big games, in packed stadiums home and road, to believe that he’ll be a big-game pitcher in the postseason when he gets the opportunity to do it, now that he’s established himself.
Anyway, for now consider a few of the stats that Kimbrel has put up this season, stats that make him a mortal lock for a second consecutive All-Star appearance and another top-10 finish in the Cy Young balloting, perhaps even top 5 if no more than a few starters have overwhelming seasons statistically:
Left-handed batters are an absurd 2-for-44 (.045) against him with six walks, 23 strikeouts and a .205 OPS including .045 slugging.
With runners in scoring position, hitters are 1-for-17 (.059) against him
After getting ahead 0-1 in counts, he’s held hitters to .123 (8-for-65) with two walks and 40 strikeouts.
Kimbrel gave up two runs, two hits and two walks in consecutive appearances May 2 and May 4. Since then, he’s allowed just three hits (.055 opponents’ average) and two walks with 28 strikeouts in 17 scoreless innings over his past 17 games.
And in his past 13 appearances, he’s allowed an .048 average with no walks and 24 strikeouts in 13 innings.
• Heyward’s hot streak: The hitting streak is at 12 games now for Heyward, who is a sizzling 20-for-44 (.455) with 11 extra-base hits (four homers), seven RBIs and a .909 slugging percentage in that dozen-game stretch.

Heyward as a 12-game hitting streak and the second-highest batting average in the NL in June.
The big right fielder has hit .395 in June with a .420 OBP and .763 slugging percentage (1.183 OPS), with 15 extra-base hits (six homers) and 14 RBIs in 21 games.
Heyward and Arizona’s Aaron Hill (.368) have the second- and third-highest averages in the NL this month (behind Joey Votto’s .407), while Arizona’s Chris Young (.154) and the Braves’ Dan Uggla (.162) have the league’s two lowest averages for the month.
Heyward’s six homers this month are one off the league lead shared by three hitters including Arizona’s Jason Kubel, and Heyward’s four homers in past 10 days is tied for the NL lead. Kubel also leads the league with 24 RBIs this month.
• Not hot: Uggla went 11-for-27 (.407) with four homers, 12 RBIs and a .500 OBP in eight games May 26 to June 5. Since then he’s 7-for-62 (.113) with one double, one homer, five RBIs, 16 walks, 26 strikeouts and a .480 OPS in 19 games.
And it’s gotten worse lately. He’s 5-for-48 (.104) with one double, one RBI, 10 walks, 20 strikeouts and a .396 OPS in his past 14 games, including 0-for-19 and 10 strikeouts in his past six home games….
While Kimbrel has been as good or better than last season, Jonny Venters continues to struggle trying to regain his form of the past two seasons. The lefty allowed another homer Wednesday, making it five homers he’s allowed in 17-2/3 innings over his past 24 appearances. Venters had allowed only three homers in 182-1/3 innings over his previous 176 career appearances.
In 27 May-June appearances, he’s 1-3 with a 5.75 ERA, two blown saves in two chances, and a .341 opponents’ average.
• Jurrjens tonight: Braves pitcher Jair Jurrjens will try to show last week’s resounding return win at Boston was not a fluke when he makes his second start since being recalled from a two-month stint in Triple-A.
It’s been nearly a year since Jurrjens last won a game at Turner Field, on July 6 against Colorado (six innings, five hits, one run). Since then he’s
0-2 with a 7.36 ERA and .333 opponents’ average in six home starts, with seven homers, 44 hits and 27 earned runs allowed in 33 innings.
Jurrjens is 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA in four career starts vs. Arizona. Stephen Drew is 5-for-13 against him, Chris Young 2-for-10 with a homer.
He’ll face Diamondbacks prospect Trevor Bauer, who’s making his major league debut in place of injured Joe Saunders. Bauer was the third pick in the 2011 draft and has modeled his pitching style after the distinct delivery of Giants fallen ace Tim Lincecum.
• Etc.
The Braves have gone 14-6 with .301 average and 3.35 ERA in past 20 games vs. Diamondbacks, including 8-1 with a .305 average and 2.03 ERA in the past nine games. Atlanta has 15 homers and 53 runs in that 8-1 stretch that began Aug. 19, 2011…. Injured and done-for-the-season Braves pitcher Beachy continues to lead the majors with .259 slugging percentage allowed, while teammate Mike Minor (.503) is last in the NL in that category. Minor’s .340 OBP allowed is also fifth-worst in the NL (Beachy’s .248 is second-best behind Matt Cain’s .245).
• Let’s close with a terrific tune that Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy wrote and Mavis Staples sings on the album that Tweedy produced for her and also played on. You can hear it by clicking here.

“YOU ARE NOT ALONE” by Mavis Staples (J. Tweedy)
You’re not alone
I’m with you
I’m lonely too
What’s that song
Can’t be sung
By two?
A broken home
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid
Open up this is a raid
I wanna get it through to you
You’re not alone
You’re not alone
Every night
I stand in your place
Every tear
On every face
Tastes the same
A broken dream
A broken heart
Isolated and afraid
Open up this is a raid
I wanna get it through to you
You’re not alone
An open hand
An open heart
There’s no need to be afraid
Open up this is a raid
I wanna get it through to you
You’re not alone
I wanna get it through to you
You’re not alone
I’m gonna get it through to you
You’re not alone

AT’s comment from last blog:
Willingham isn’t an option unless we are willing to trade for him. And I still don’t see all that depth at pitching equating into qaulity rotation, look at all the problems we have now. And next year isn’t any different with the possibility that JJ won’t be offered arb, Beachy possibly not making it back at all next year, Hudson another year older and I doubt all of the physical issues gone, Hanson is what he is nothing more than a 2 or 3 starter and then you lump all of these together Delgado, Minor, Teheran and Medlen to which none of them have shown they are ready to lead a club. I just don’t see all of this quality everyone has faith in for next season, I see the quantity by not quality.
Well said AT and I agree with this statement 100%. I just hope Wren sees the rotation as we do because this team really needs an ace this year and in the future. Greinke would be a really good addition for this team.

I’m sure the Braves will make Bourn an offer, probably something around 4/40, maybe even 5/50 (pipe dream to me but you never know) but he’ll probably turn it down and go elsewhere. They’ve had interest in BJ Upton in that past. With Desmond Jennings already there, Rays don’t have a need for Upton I would think so I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Wren go after him even if he has to overpay (which would surprise me even less). The CF depth, in term of suitbale everyday players, in this organization is atrocious IMO.

Depends on how you see the 3, I guess. Heyward is more of a damage guy, Bourn and Prado have been a superb tandem, and like that. That’s just me, though. As long as they’re both hitting, not a whole lot of difference where they slot, certainly not enough to impact a single game. Maybe you get some significance over 90 games, but both are going to get a little slumpy at some point. Then Fredo can surprise us all again, and the whole 2-or-3 thing is moot.

DS1, I don’t know if Hudson is an ace anymore, or if one would have ever considered him a true ace. I don’t know what an “ace” is to be 100% honest, but I assume it’s a pitcher more consistantly dominant than Hudson. I know his record is unreal when given a 3 or 4 run lead in his career and some might say that automatically qualifies him an true #1.

Medlen needs to be in the rotation. Streched him out in AAA and wasted 2 weeks. Why, just to put him back in pen to pitch 1 inning in games already 4 runs down. What’s up with that. Pinchey Idiots.
Either Minor or Deldago one needs to go down for a little while. Hard to win with 2 kids in rotation back to back. Either one would be fine with me but not both this year. What we really need to do is package at least 1 of Mike Minor / RHP Randall Delgado RHP / Julio Teheran for good vet starter.

Unfortunately, by the time you’d realize that they had “heated up”, they would already have used up a lot of the “heat”, in spots where it would do the least good. You’d then move them back up in the order, right about the time they would cool off. Buying high and selling low, constantly.

So,again, we have trade requests involving Julio Teheran because Polished couldn’t get the job done and has an ERA over 5 for his career. We overdraft the kid #7 overall in 2009, he pitches poorly, and then he costs us Julio Teheran because he pitches poorly.

Hi Jerry. Can we Braves fans expect a big deadline addition given the state of the pitching staff and the offense? Which players do you see trading for?
Jerry Crasnick (1:25 PM)
Julio, I don’t think the Braves have made a firm decision what they want to do yet. If they can develop a little more consistency with the kids in the rotation, maybe they’ll target a bat. If McCann gets rolling and Chipper can stay healthy and productive, maybe they lean more toward pitching. Frank Wren seems to be looking at a moving target at the moment.

Simmons needs to be at a spot where he can drive in runs!! He has clearly shown he is capable of hitting with RISP. Chipper & Freeman could be flip-flopped at 4 & 6 I wouldn’t mind David Ross taking over catching duties, or give Gattis or Bethancourt a shot!! McCann clearly STILL can’t see, does anyone else notice how he still squints at the pitcher every time he’s up to bat? The only thing Uggla is good for is walks. He can’t hit with RISP, he only HRs when it DOESNT matter. solo shots, when the braves are either getting blown out or are blowing someone out. Same with McCann all his HRs are solo shots, with the exception of a lucky Grand slam. Trade for a real 2B, or stick Prado back there & bring back Constanza or bring up Ernesto Mejia!! Give em a shot! He’s tearing up AAA, & his original position was LF. Have no CLUE why this idiot management has moved him to 1B when we’ve got a solid 1Bmen already. Clean house in management!! Here’s the probably with that thinking, if he’s hot for 8 or so games at a time but cold (I mean freezing cold) for 19 or so at a time where’s the benefit? So he produces for 30 percent of the year? The Braves would only be interested in trading for Greinke if they could sign him to a new long-term contract, writes MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. The Braves could, as rumored, use some of the money budgeted for their 2013 payroll to accommodate adding Greinke or another pitcher. As Bowman points out, the Braves will have almost $36MM (Chipper Jones, Derek Lowe and Michael Bourn’s contract) coming off the books this winter, though the club will need some of those funds to re-sign Bourn or spend on another outfielder.
Besides Greinke, Bowman lists Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster and Edinson Volquez as “potential targets” for Atlanta.

Kudos to Gonzalez for playing the starters tonight.
YOU NEVER KNOW: If both teams win a wild-card, Bauer COULD start. And to not give the starters a look at him would be a mistake.
I can’t stand the way he juggles lineups, but I’ll go on record giving him credit for getting the guys in there. Bauer is a very tough cookie who’s pitched a ton of games under pressure in high school and college. Unflappable, but gets amped up a bit too much. Lowrie’s on the roster for flexibility and some bat; Simmons is here as the ultimate defensive replacement. You really want a Josh Smith unload A-Bomb.
Like any deal, its what you get back in return and how the salary cap matches in the budget in that sport.
I don;t know if I would move him for Pau Gasol or not, Gasol is still a high end player but that is a move I’d be on the fence with. Josh is quite a bit younger.
I respect Ferry as a good NBA guy, but even he cannot unload the unlikable Joe Johnson, never really cared for him anyway but there is no choice but to keep him.
Remember, Joe Johnson does not care if we show for the games.
I expect more of the same from the Hawks the next yr or two, and if you blow it up than you are back to 24-58 or so., That solves nothing. Hoping for ping pong balls to drop is not a real plan.

Don’t normally do ingame, but an observation.
My wife and I are watching the game, and I say “He can’t do that”.
She says “what?” as McCann smacks the ball to the wall.
After Prado scores, I said “You can’t have a rookie out there shaking off signs from his catcher.”
Bauer shook off two signs before the pitch to Brian. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the outcome, but how can someone in their debut, ignore the advice of a seasoned ML catcher.
Never on my team would that happen.

rather have Medlen for 2 or 3 innings, or 6 or 7?
I’d rather have Minor pitch like a big leaguer with a brain so this question can stop being asked. None of our starters tend to go deep so that puts a big emphasis on a not so strong pen. Lose every once out of 5 days with a starter or have a pen that blows some of our better starters games more than one in five games.

Jake,
I’m pretty sure Minor has a brain because after he walks his trademark lead off guy in the 5th, he begins sweating, looking over to first, and taking on the look of an insolent child before giving up the inevitable 3 run homer. He wouldn’t be able to do all those things unless there was a brain sending fight of flight signals to his body that he is terrified.

It was the right call to use Kimbrel in the 9th. Chris Yong just beat him and the Braves left far too many men on base tonight. What a frustrating loss. Momentum would have been nice heading into a series against the Nationals, but they cough up a lead and squander a bunch of opportunities.

2 out 3 isn’t bad….yes it is! The Nats finally lose, and the Braves have a chance to close some ground, and they lay an egg like this.
The Braves face the Nats the next 3 games with Delgado and Minor pitching two of them. They could find themselves 5.5 back really quick.

I cannot believe it that Kimbrall of all people lets em down — Very BUMB. Hope this is not the begining of a Kimbrell slump a la Venters or we are really screwed.

He makes poor personnel decisions but I’ll give him kudos for starting the entire front line tonight against Bauer. Good move.
Bringing in Kimbrel is what he’s always done along with almost every other MLB manager. Good move. Young just kills us — always has.
Not an Uggla guy — but I love the way each at-bat is analyzed around here. Starters get around 500-600 each season, so I’m sure an 0 for 4 warrants a benching, demotion to AAA or an outright DFA.

If there’s one reason why we shouldn’t have pitched Kimbrel tonight, it’s because he pitched last night and we have the first place Nats coming in for 3. We’ll need him then, so maybe a night off for Craig in a game where he wouldn’t get a save, wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
Also, we had the top of the lineup due in the 9th with the pitcher’s spot making the last out of the 8th. That’s probably 2 innings out of another reliever, yet we would’ve wasted 3 relievers in 2 innings had Kimbrel not given up the bomb. Bad foresight IMO in a tie game in the 9th inning.

Uggla didn’t hit last year until August, then he carrier the team for the rest of the season. IN August and Sept he hit .288 .376 .561 .936.
Face it, lots of MLB hitters are very streaky. Martin Prado is another. We couldn’t get a decent offer for him and nobody cared what happened to him coming out of Spring Training. Now he’s probably the best hitter. Prado basically hits half the year and is very, very average the other half of the year.
How do you deal with it? The best way you know how to and you hope several guys come together in September.

My take–and I’ll be serious, promise…..Fredi, generally had his tuchus together tonight–I see why one wants to hold the tie and give yourself the best chance to win in the ninth—he went with the awesome righty….EOF rests, he’ll get more work with DC. Uggla is just Uggla….he did manage to get hit so he contributed, and yes it burns me up that he has been stinking it up so bad lately; but I like the guy…when I ‘rip’ him it’s cause I like the guy and know he can do better. Finally, we lost because we just blow! No seriously, we fell short simply by hanging too many on the base paths.

Hey, just logged on and am glad to see some sane posts here at the end… not even gonna go back and see what the peanut gallery had to say.
Glad to see JJ pitch well again – that’s huge – and really, every inning Kimbrel pitches is crucial… he was gonna give up a run sooner or later, and chances were, it was gonna hurt. Absolute right move using him in the ninth, though.
Uggla’s struggling as bad (or worse) than he did the first half last year. But the good news is, we know he’ll come out of it, and probably with a vengeance.
Gonna be in Atlanta this weekend (geez, gonna be hotter there than down here!) but won’t get to see any games. Still always great to be back in Atlanta!
Thanks for the quotes, DOB. Fredi sounds a little tepid in his comments about JJ, but maybe reading too much into it. Sure is good to read real ballplayers’ comments on losing a game, as compared to the whining in-game crowd.

Jurrjens was fine. He is what he is — a middle-of-the-rotation guy. Not a stud.
A bigger issue is Gonzalez not treating Uggla the same as other players. His favoritism of Uggla prohibits him from making tough decisions about getting him some rest and it hurts the team. You’d think someone who’s managed a guy for so long with recognize danger signs a heckuva lot earlier than he has. Gonzalez allows Uggla to go into deep slumps and acts like a blackjack player who refuses to go up to his hotel room when it’s apparent he’s going to lose all his money.

LOL…. I like the fact that Uggla wants to play every day, but he can’t do it. He’s hurting himself (and the team) by doing so…. When Uggla slumps, he’s no different than letting Jack Wilson play. Then, Uggs struggles for weeks. If you put Wilson in to play every 2 weeks, you struggle for 12 days.

How do you have a guy like Craig Kimbrel waiting in the bullpen to close the deal and not push one GD run across in a tie game.
Any game in which he appears with the score tied, the Braves should just automatically get a big fat L.

so, back to baseball
something was brought to my attention by a friend about the new CBA and how it will affect trades.
before, if you traded for say Greinke and got him for two months, you at least got 2 draft picks as compensation for losing him, but now mid season acquisitions are not eligible for said draft pick protection.
This, IMO, means the pricetage for potential “rental” players will drop a fair bit from last year. So instead of a team dropping a top 5 prospect plus some other pieces, I bet nobody on the big TOP 20 IN MLB prospect lists will be required , perhaps someone in the top 50 and another in the top 100 and a low level guy, but it’s not gonna take Delgado or Teheran to get him.

Insider on pitching injuries
On Tuesday night, word went around: Cincinnati Reds starter Bronson Arroyo was working on a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers. Through 7 1/3 innings, Arroyo had allowed only one baserunner — a Ryan Braun hit-by-pitch in the first. Milwaukee had managed to get only four balls out of the infield.
This was unexpected, to say the least. Seventy-three pitchers have pitched at least 250 innings in the past two seasons. Only four of them have given up hits at a higher rate than Arroyo. The 35-year-old right-hander hasn’t thrown a pitch at 90 miles per hour all season, and his career ERA is basically league average.
Even if he did throw a no-hitter, no one would say Arroyo has “no-hit stuff,” which is why it wasn’t shocking when the no-hitter and the Reds’ 3-0 eventually vanished in the eighth. But there’s one crucial thing Arroyo does almost as good as anyone: He’s very, very good at showing up for work.
Most durable pitchers
Since 2002, here are the 10 pitchers to throw at least 1,000 innings without going on the DL.

Baseball Prospectus keeps complete records of major-league disabled list stints starting in 2002. Since then, 10 pitchers have thrown at least 1,000 innings without once appearing on the disabled list. Arroyo ranks fourth on that list, with a little more than 1,800 innings (see table).
Arroyo is similar to Livan Hernandez, who’s in his 17th big league season and has yet to spend a day on the DL. In his prime seasons of 2000-2005, Hernandez’ 4.01 ERA was just 5 percent below league average. Forty pitchers averaged at least 100 innings per season during the same span with better ERAs. But Hernandez was the 10th-most-valuable pitcher during that period, racking up more than 19 wins above replacement purely by his ability to take the ball. He averaged 237 innings per season, and the teams he played for — Giants, Expos and Nationals — weren’t looking for flair. They were buying outs in bulk.
This durability sets guys like Hernandez apart from most pitchers. In each of the six seasons mentioned above, Hernandez finished in the top five in pitcher abuse points, a pitch-count-based metric designed by Baseball Prospectus to assess stress. Others on the list — Jason Schmidt, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Victor Zambrano — broke down in the near future.
After looking at the data, sometimes it seems surprising when any pitcher stays healthy for an extended period of time. A study by Jeff Zimmerman in 2010 determined that during the previous decade, any starter who had pitched at least 120 innings in one season had a 41 percent chance of hitting the DL the following year. From 2005-2011, an average of just less than 11 Tommy John surgeries were performed through June, according to data collected by BP injury authority Corey Dawkins. This year, the count is already up to 23, with pitchers like Jose Contreras, Felipe Paulino and Daniel Hudson likely to add to the total in the coming weeks.
With seemingly every day bringing news of new injuries, how is it that certain pitchers have managed to stay healthy year after year? And how might teams be able to find or develop more of them?
Some of these well-preserved pitchers have at least one obvious quality in common: less-than-impressive velocity. According to PITCHf/x data available at Brooks Baseball, the primary fastballs of the aforementioned top five DL-free pitchers averaged just 88.2 mph. That’s not a coincidence, according to the American Sports Medicine Institute’s Glenn Fleisig, one of the foremost experts on pitching biomechanics. “All things being equal, the 90-mph fastball is more stress on the elbow and shoulder than the 80-mph fastball,” Fleisig says.
That presents a problem for teams, since velocity often goes hand-in-hand with success. All else being equal, the harder a pitcher throws, the lower his ERA goes. But that extra speed creates extra stress, and that stress leads to injuries. Thus far, Justin Verlander has combined the durability of a league-average soft-tosser like Hernandez with the elite fastball and performance of a Cy Young winner, but very few other starters can say the same.
However, it’s never the case that all things between two pitchers are equal aside from velocity. For one thing, every pitcher delivers the ball in his own unique way, and that can mean the difference between a pitcher who breaks down and one who holds up. “If it’s good mechanics versus bad mechanics, that could more than compensate for the difference in ball velocity,” Fleisig says.
But what do “good” and “bad” mechanics look like? If it were easy to pass judgment on a player’s mechanics, there would be more major leaguers like Hernandez. Unfortunately, making sense of mechanics is one of the most difficult tasks facing teams. According to one scouting executive with a major league club, one of the factors that makes evaluating mechanics so difficult is that there’s no example of optimal mechanics to which each pitcher can be compared. “People say that maybe [Greg] Maddux had perfect mechanics,” says the executive. “But it’s very tough to say that there’s one ideal mechanical delivery, or one ideal arm action.”
Using the precise measurements made possible by motion capturing and high-speed cameras, Fleisig and his colleagues at ASMI have identified a number of mechanical risk factors and designed programs to correct them. He hopes that within 10 years, biomechanical analysis will become automated to the point that data can be collected in games. As ASMI’s methods improve and teams increasingly come to accept them, analysis of mechanics could pay off in better health for pitchers. However, short of sending a pitcher to be analyzed in the laboratory, teams can still learn a lot with the naked eye.
“There are definitely visual indicators that you can see from the stands,” says the executive. “The real good scouts, they’re all over it. It’s something that you can tell by watching if you know what you’re watching for. It’s not 100 percent, but I don’t think anything when you’re dealing with scouting is.”
Faulty mechanics can be fixed, but only at considerable risk to a pitcher’s performance. Doug Thorburn, a former biotechnician at the National Pitching Association and the co-author of “Arm Action, Arm Path and the Perfect Pitch,” says, “An ideal development path will include mechanical instruction in the early stages in order to maximize efficiency and minimize risk as the pitcher climbs the minor-league ladder.” By the time a pitcher reaches the majors, Fleisig adds, “It’s more a mentality of, ‘If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.’”
But mechanics aren’t everything. “Fifty percent of the equation is how much damage you do to your arm, and the other 50 percent is how effectively you repair and recover from your damage,” Fleisig says. That means that much more than mechanics goes into the complex calculus of predicting what’s in store for a pitcher, including workload, nutrition and conditioning. (Bobby Cox once called Derek Lowe’s exercise program the “best workout routine I’ve ever seen.”) And the most important factor of all might be one whose impact on health is still largely beyond our understanding: Genetics.
[+] Enlarge
AP Photo/Ann Heisenfelt
It’s difficult to say if Livan Hernandez’ durability is due mostly to his mechanics or simply genetics.
“All of these guys at the major-league level, and maybe most of the guys at the minor-league level, to a certain extent, they won the genetic lottery,” says the executive. “There are things they do that the average person just cannot do. You look at a guy like Livan Hernandez, that’s genetics. He’s not exactly a physical specimen, but he’s just got an arm that works, and he can go out there and pitch and pitch and pitch, and he doesn’t break down, he stays healthy. I’m not going to say that it’s not the product of a lot of hard work, but at the same time, he’s obviously just special.”
Since genetic freaks are few and far between, both Fleisig and the executive emphasize the importance of competent coaching and training staffs. “You want an aggressive athlete,” Fleisig says. “But if the athlete has a good relationship with the coach and the trainer to help read, whether in the training room or on the field, whether he’s had enough today, that player is going to benefit and have a longer endurance. Likewise, the next day, the player who knows his body and talks to the trainer and says, ‘My arm’s a little more worn out; I need a little more therapy,’ that’s where the people aspect comes into the equation.”
Despite the efforts of Fleisig and others, most of the major advances in pitcher preservation have been made in injury treatment. Injury prediction and prevention have made more modest progress.
“I don’t know that you can say that we’ve made a whole lot of progress,” the executive said. “I think teams can kind of identify the high-risk guys, but at the end of the year, there are going to be a ton of guys you weren’t expecting to break down.”
Given all the uncertainty, it’s not surprising that pitchers like Hernandez and Lowe have continued to draw interest from teams as they get into their mid-to-late 30s. All else being equal — there’s that phrase again — given a choice between an older pitcher with a clean bill of health and a slightly more injury-prone pitcher in his prime, which would most teams choose?
“The industry will probably say they’re going to go with the older guy, the Livan Hernandez,” says the executive. “You’ve got more to stand behind if you say, ‘We’re going to take the guy with this track record of performance over the last 10 years.’ But when that GM lays his head down on the pillow at night, he’s probably thinking that it’s a coin flip.”
Teams can take several steps to maximize their odds of lucking into the next Hernandez. They can recruit the best scouts, coaches and trainers and monitor their pitchers closely. They can make use of new technologies like PITCHf/x and the motion capturing available at ASMI. But even if they do everything right, they can mitigate the risk only so much.
“Pitchers are going to get hurt,” the executive concluded. “You just hope it’s not your guys at the wrong time.”

Martin by month throughout his career -
April – .289, .359, .441, .800
May – .303, .355, .448, .802
June – .329, .366, .492, .858
July – .286, .336, .443, .779
August – .316, .353, .470, .823
September – .268, .315, .363, ..678
Seems pretty steady to me. Except for September (where he’s been injured the past two seasons), one month with below an .800 OPS (and that one month a .779 which ain’t off by much), he’s a damned good offensive player – a far cry from being “very, very average the other half of the season”.

First off, he’s 21 years old and there is nothing wrong with the kid having some struggles at that age in Triple-A. Second, why would you trade him coming off a poor month? You’re not maximizing his value that way. But again, Wren isn’t trading him for 2 months of Zack Greinke. No chance.

In playoff hunt and better yet, have a month to evaluate your starting pitching. Minor, Delgado and JJ have 4 weeks to prove themselves. (2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

yes, you can. by finishing the game. example, if venters comes in in the 8th with a 1 run lead and gets three outs, he is in line for the save. he would earn it by coming back out and pitching the 9th. when venters comes in in the 8th inning up by one run, it IS a save situation. thus, if he gives up lead lead, he blew the save.

All he has to do is follow the rules for 4 years…is that too much of a sacrifice considering the payoff?
And carrying a gun with an altered serial number is stupid and against the law, so why would you risk your whole future for such a dumb decision?
As a Georgia fan, it is very hard to understand why these kids can’t follow the rules for the short time they are in college, regardless of their upbringing. There should be advisers and counselors in place to show these guys how to survive the system and realize what the payoff can be.

The Braves have committed 41 errors in 75 games… 3rd fewest in the NL

This is the lineup I’d go with for the Nats series…
1. Bourn (CF)
2. Prado (LF)
3. Heyward (RF)
4. Chipper (3B)
5. Freeman (1B)
6. Uggla (2B)
7. McCann (C)
8. Simmons (SS)
Now that Heyward’s hitting streak is over it’s ok to move him out of the 2 hole… doesn’t really matter, I guess, but the top 5 hitters should be stacked at the top with Simmons hitting 8th, just in case there’s some kind of miracle and either BMac or Uggla manage to get on base.

The leaders in blown saves aren’t even closers. EOF is one of the league leaders in blown saves, yet has zero saves. Something is clearly wrong with that stat. I’d much rather Kimbrel get a blown save in a non-save situation in the 9th, then EOF get one in a game where he will NEVER get a save.

“Go back and read the rules I posted again… if you don’t finish the game, you don’t get the save. Pretty simple.”
So if you don’t finish the game, you shouldn’t get a blown save either? I mean it is stupid to charge anyone who doesn’t pitch in the 9th, or last inning, with a blown save, when they were never in to close the game.

No. The deal is going to be for Greinke. If there is a window, I’d imagine the only part of it that would be “sweetened” would be the secondary player involved in the deal. Example, if Polished is the main player then the secondary player goes from being (again an example) Tony Pena, Jr. to a Joey Terdoslavich or something of that nature.
