Who wants to bet that Chad Qualls will somehow end up in a Braves uni? I personally dont know what his deal is and his numbers are not impressive, but I know the Braves have always wanted him. Who thinks Braves sign him by today or tomorrow, or actually, trade for him since he was DFA’ed?

AT, we need one pitcher to replace Beachy. If he’s not hurt, I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned about the Braves starting rotation for the rest of this season or 2013. Teheran, Delgado, Minor, Medlen or Gilmartin have to be able to fill 2 spots. 3? Not sure. Which is why acquiring one start(doesn’t have to be top line guy like Greinke) is important.
TheOnlyBravesFan, not so sure we can ride those guys next year. Beachy won’t be back and I guess we could use them just don’t expect to compete with all that youth and consistency.
We did our canning last week, before the surgery. Tomatoes, jalapenos, and garlic jalapeno dill pickles. No peas or green beans this year, we have lots left from the past two years.
Not because they’re older, but because they have pitched a year in the Majors… that should count for something. I can see why people are worried about filling 3 spots with young guys, but we don’t need to fill that spot with Greinke…. maybe JJ will come back on a 1 yr deal for 4 million (assuming he’s good the rest of the year)
Just wanted to stop by and say hi to all and share some thoughts:
First of all how good is Craig f’n Kimbrel…dude is a beast. If the Braves have a lead going into the 9th the game is over. I feel more confident with him than I did when Smoltz was the closer.
So with Beachy going down I would really like Wren to go get Zach Greinke. An ace on this staff is really needed now and if the Braves want to go anywhere in the playoffs they need another arm. I wouldn’t mind giving a pitcher like Greinke an extension, but I’m not sure he’s worth 20 mil a year with his personal demons. I really hope Wren goes all out trying to acquire some needed pieces for this team with Chipper retiring. What do you guys think it would take to get Greinke?
I think Delgado and possibly Minor will be decent next year, and Teheran can be the “rookie” on the staff. Of course, this all depends on how those 2 finish the year, and especially Minor ….
Grienke would cost way more than we’re going to pay – both in prospects for the rental and a long term contract to make it worthwhile. Just don’t see the Braves paying a pitcher $15 mil+ per year with the young pitching the’ve been hoarding all this time.
If they DO decide they need veteran phing help, it won’t be a top of the roion starter – nor does it need to be with Hudson and Hanson on the staff.
I really don’t think we’ll be paying any starting pitcher 20 million. That’s just not in line with what this team has done recently. Wren dipped into the free agent pool in 2008/2009 because the pitchers were a ways off from showing up – he knew Hanson was on his way, but Beachy was an unknown and Teheran/Delgado were in Danville/Rome at the time, I think.
How many outfielders are usually selected for the NL All-Star team? 5? CarGo, Braun and McCutchen should be the starters….with Beltran and perhaps Melky as the reserves.
Lew, I thought Beachy was our ace. Would love to see us get a top rotation starter at the deadline, but you’re right it isn’t happening. No chance. Not when I see us needing another late pen guy and a bench bat. And I do see us getting one of those to go with a mid-rotation guy.
And that bench bat is the one I see Wren going after to go with Liriano type pitcher. Medlen will eventually take Venters spot for good, if he hasn’t already. Hard to tell the way Fredi uses matchups so much.
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Those who’d add Teheran to #Braves rotation: He’s avg just under 5 inn. per start this yr in Triple-A, has 3.50 ERA, 47 K/26 BB in 64-1/3 IP
DAP, LEW agree with you guys alot…. for some reason people on this blog always think we need more pitching than hitting… I disagree if one of our hitters goes down we are done… we need another bat more than a one year wonder who will leave for free agency

PHILLIES? They got old pretty quick didn’t they? Too many FA arms and farm raised bats I guess. Were UTLEY and HOWARD farm-raised, or were they trades/FA too?
“I think he’d do okay in the bigs right now. Not spectacular”
So you’d want someone in the big league rotation right now who can’t even pitch 5 innings on average at Gwinnett. No sir, we already have enough of that in the rotation now. This just proves even more why Wren needs to get an ace for this pitching staff.
Obsession with one person where everything they do riles you up and makes you type in ALL CAPS randomly. You start nit picking about what color socks they wear, how they scratch their nose, what they had for lunch. It becomes your life.
It’s not hard to find the time when you don’t work and have no intention of working.
Ah come on, phil.
People advocate…….. for things they care about and against things they don’t care for. Most people involved in civic/civil activism have jobs, families and volunteer their time because they care.
Willingham isn’t an option unless we are willing to trade for him. And I still don’t see all that depth at pitching equating into qaulity rotation, look at all the problems we have now. And next year isn’t any different with the possibility that JJ won’t be offered arb, Beachy possibly not making it back at all next year, Hudson another year older and I doubt all of the physical issues gone, Hanson is what he is nothing more than a 2 or 3 starter and then you lump all of these together Delgado, Minor, Teheran and Medlen to which none of them have shown they are ready to lead a club. I just don’t see all of this quality everyone has faith in for next season, I see the quantity by not quality.
Murph, did you include the TOR game? I don’t he had given up a run yet before he was pulled, even though Livan went on a scoring binge after he came in…
Please no more MINOR, FREDI keeps throwing him out there to get beat up on. I really feel sorry for the kids mentail state, it may well ruin him , if all he really needs is more time in minors.
106 with our humidity is no picnic.
************
It’s a lot easier to handle, though, if one is IN SHAPE and prepared for it. That’s one of the big reasons I detest out of shape “athletes” who then whine and complain about the heat while cashing huge paychecks. I run in this crap all the time, and after a period of adjustment, which they all should have long since made by now, they will be fine IF they stay hydrated during the games and start getting well hydrated now in the days before it gets that hot.
I’m not saying it will be easy, but the conditions are the same for both teams and everyone out there. They can handle it IF they’re prepared and use good sense along the way.
I would say he was pulled due to high pitch counts, due to his high walk numbers in the minors. I seriously doubt that he was pulled from those starts for no reason if he hadn’t gave up a run, it was due to high pitch counts due to walks.
He had higher than normal walk totals in some, and some with zero walks, and others with average numbers…
The thing that sticks out to me is not only his walk totals, but his high number of HBP. Knowing that he was sent to AAA with instructions to work on specific pitches, it doesn’t surprise me that he’s walking guys or hitting guys as he works to gain control of his breaking stuff.
I’m sure if Teheran went to AAA and worked as he did last season, feeding off his fastball, that his numbers would be better.
Personally I’m not concerned about his stats. He’s working on stuff, not showcasing stuff. And that low pitch count will come in handy come September.
Teheran will be a superstar I’m sure, but it just doesn’t seem like he is ready for the big leagues right now. You just can’t throw in another question mark into the rotation that is filled with question marks already. Not in a playoff race, if you’re out of contention yes, but not in a playoff push.
I know, Bat, but who in their right mind (assuming such a thing exists) uses up a valuable day of leave to go protest at the US Supreme Court where it literally serves no purpose?
Thus the reason I suspect most of these folks don’t hold day jobs….maybe night, which is actually quite possible.
How do we even know what Teheran’s orders were at the minor league level? Maybe the big club told him to go down there and work on his breaking ball?
Shelby Miller was just told not to ever shake off the catcher because they thought he wasn’t using his breaking ball enough and he was just trying to blow his fastball by hitters. We have no idea what Teheran could be working on now in his 2nd year at the level.
You just can’t throw in another question mark into the rotation that is filled with question marks already.
At worst, you’d be replacing one question mark with another, not adding on. At best, you get the guy who has been one of the top-ranked pitching prospects of the last couple of years and who has refined his breaking ball and command during a seasoning stint in the minors.
The thing that he hasn’t done, probably, is show that he can consistently take the work he’s been doing into games. Otherwise, he’d probably have been up before now. In any event, I’d have no problem with Teheran taking the 4th or 5th slot, if Delgado or Minor keep going nuke.
The thing is, that’s exactly what the rotation needs, is someone who can go 7 innings on a nightly basis and Teheran hasn’t been able to go 5 innings on a nightly basis. But i agree with you, until he can show that he is able to take the ball deep, he will not be up this season.
I know, Bat, but who in their right mind (assuming such a thing exists) uses up a valuable day of leave to go protest at the US Supreme Court where it literally serves no purpose? _ phil

There are at least 3 other games where he had given up 3 or less runs and was pulled early (1.2/3 ER, 3.0/1 ER, 4.0/2 ER).
Those of you who are saying that “Teheran can’t even get past the 5th inning” need to look a little closer before opening up yer pie holes.

Obsession with one person where everything they do riles you up and makes you type in ALL CAPS randomly. You start nit picking about what color socks they wear, how they scratch their nose, what they had for lunch. It becomes your life.

Cue the whiners, apologists and excuse makers….

Murph-
I would say he was pulled due to high pitch counts, due to his high walk numbers in the minors. I seriously doubt that he was pulled from those starts for no reason if he hadn’t gave up a run, it was due to high pitch counts due to walks.

Teheran minor league game log: http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=6797&position=P&type=-1&gds=&gde=&season=
