Braves postgame quotes after Tuesday’s win over Arizona

TIM HUDSON

On success vs. Arizona:

“It’s one of those things where I’ve been able to stay down in the zone and hit the corners. It could be the other way around just as easy.”

On if thinking complete game:

“Nah, not really. I’m not a complete game kind of guy. I just go out there and pitch until the manager takes me out. I felt like I could have finished it but we don’t have any off days between now and the All-Star break so man of my age should probably be limited to how many pitches I throw.”

On that five-run lead:

“It was nice. The guys came out swinging the bats. We took advantage of some pitches up in the zone and were able to get opportunities to score and take advantage of it. Obviously their guy over there was having some issues, had to be taken out of the game, hopefully nothing too serious on his part. But it was nice to be able to go out there and take advantage of some opportunities.”

On with four, five-run lead, something tell you ‘I’m good:’

“I think any pitcher if you’re given a four-run lead, if you can’t make that hold up, you really haven’t done your job, I don’t feel. A four-run lead is pretty good. You’ve got to go out there and still pitch. You don’t want to go out there and let the floodgates open by any means but you can be aggressive and you can be aggressive in the strike zone and you can try to make them earn their way to score. It’s a big enough lead to where you don’t have to nibble but at the same time, it’s close enough to where you still have to pitch a little bit.”

On 41 pitches first two innings, then change course:

“Yeah, here it is. Hit it. Luckily we made some great plays behind me. If they did get in position to score you’ve got to change your approach as a pitcher. But you have to be aggressive. When a pitcher is aggressive, a hitter sees that, they’re going to be on their heels a little bit. The pitchers that nibble and pitch around the strike zone, where they get really comfortable.”

On Fredi stressing he wants to see a string of deep starts:

“We just have to go out there and be aggressive, be aggressive in the strike zone but down in the strike zone. If you’re able to do that you’re going to be able to get some quick innings, have some quick outs, three pitches or less. That’s what I always try to go out there and get a guy out within three pitches. That’ll get you deeper into ballgames. You may not have as many swings and misses or as many strikeouts but you’ll be in the game longer and it’ll take some pressure off the bullpen.”

On if ankle is costing a little bit on fastball:

“I’m sure, probably. It’s one of those things where you really don’t have a whole lot of base to torque off of as you’re throwing. The movement is still pretty good. I think my offspeed pitches might have benefitted a little bit from my ankle being a little bit sore, but I think my fastball has definitely suffered a little bit. (offspeed pitches) you’re just not overthrowing them. Yeah but I can reach back and get some every now and again but there’s a lot of 87s out there. But it might be located a little better than it normally is because I know I can’t throw 87 by big league hitters.”

On if taking pride to stop losing streaks, start new streak:

“I take a lot of pride in it. I think everybody should. As a starter on a big league staff you should want to be the kind of guy that stops bad things from happening or bad things from continuing to happen. I feel like it’s something I’ve been able to do for the most part in my career.”

CHIPPER JONES

On if coming around offensively:

“I’ve been scuffling but it’s starting to come back around. I really lost a lot of momentum with that injury and I was feeling good at the plate, swinging the bat good from both sides of the plate and just lost it. I’m just now starting to get back where I’m centering balls on both sides of the plate, to all fields. That’s a good feeling.”

On having Hudson deliver after two young guys struggle:

“I thought Huddy was awesome after the second inning. He had 40 pitches after the second and I looked up in the eighth and he didn’t even have 100 yet. So he did some really efficient work there through the middle innings to keep his pitch count down and take us deep. You want your big guns to go six, seven, eighth innings and it didn’t look like he was going to be able to make it but he made adjustments and got double plays when he needed them. The offense was on point tonight which was nice to see – 17 hits, I’ll take that any day.”

On Daniel Hudson, did he seem flat:

“I couldn’t tell anything was wrong. He had life on his fastball. He was 92, 93, and it got on you and he showed me a good change-up which I didn’t see much off last year the only other time I faced him. But it just seemed to kind of come out of nowhere. I think his last pitch was 93. Whatever he has he was battling through to the very end. You never want to see anybody get hurt.”

On getting hits past five days as a team:

“We’ve been swinging it OK. that trio of Uggla and BMac and Freddie have kind of been scuffling of late. When your big boys scuffle a little, myself included too, when that middle of the lineup goes through a run, you’ll have trouble scoring runs, but to be honest with you we scored enough runs to win more than three games on the road trip. It’s good to come home, sleep in our own bed and start the homestand off with a rousing dominant victory.”

FREDI GONZALEZ

On if Tim Hudson gave you the start you wanted from a veteran, given recent losses:

“He gave us an excellent opportunity to win obviously. He induced a couple of double plays. He helped himself, helped us, with the bat. He gave us a solid performance tonight. Hopefully tomorrow Tommy [Hanson] follows up with that and we keep rolling quality starts after quality starts.”

On offense and healthy lineup:

“This is the fifth, sixth day in a row we’ve had the same group of characters. And they are swinging the bats, getting big hits and getting on base. But it all starts for me with the guy on the mound who gives you an opportunity to win the ball game. We swung the bats, capitalized and kept adding on. It was good.”

On not letting Hudson complete game:

“I talked to Huddy about it. I said ‘Huddy, I’m not all too excited about you getting a complete game here. What do you feel?’ He said ‘Whatever you want to do.’ He had those bone spurs and threw 101 pitches. He had enough. Plus we don’t have any days we can bump him. It was a good time to get him out, get [Anthony] Varvaro in there and get a win.”

On Hudson after throwing 41 pitches in the first two innings:

“Those first two innings scared me because all of a sudden his pitch count gets cranked up and I’m going ‘Oh, man.’ He started throwing the ball, the sinker over the plate and getting some ground balls. [Andrelton] Simmons made a couple nice plays on some tough balls. I think from the third inning on he ended up throwing 60 pitches, give or take a couple of pitches.”

On Chipper Jones coming around:

“Every time we give him a couple of days, he kind of recharges his batteries. We have to continue to do that. We knew that going in. He had a couple good hits in Boston. Hit the ball hard. We didn’t play him Sunday, Monday an off day and come out today and he was good.”

On [Freddie] Freeman in the seventh spot:

“If he keeps doing that he won’t be in the seventh spot very long. But we swung the bats up and down the lineup. We did a nice job.”

On the number of good at-bats, including opposite-field hits:

“For me, the whole thing I like with Freeman, is how many times have we seen him take three pitches or have four-pitch at-bats? Not very often. Today he came out in his first at-bat and took the first two or three pitches of the at-bat and hits a ball to left field. He did the same thing all at-bats, took pitches. For me, he is seeing the ball. He is not getting jumpy out there and swinging at first pitches.”

On the squeeze attempt in the seventh inning:

“It’s one of those things. It’s a 6-1 game at the time and you have the pitcher at the plate. You feel like you need to score more runs. You roll the dice a little bit. We fouled it off and then Huddy hits a sac fly to get another run.”

The kid, Simmons, continues to impress. Gets his bat on the ball and if you do that, you can get some bloop hits. The kid looks like a 2 hole hitter in the future who can hit and run. Oh wait, the Braves with Fredi don’t hit and run.

alas, freeman wasn’t in the top of the lineup poor man can’t get from first to third on a single like heyward or anything that closely resembles heyward can. also, im sure a world series title would convince greinke to sign an extension with us. throw a mike minor, and heck a lipka, with a little vizcaino, and im sure well have a deal. can a mcCmann dream?

More pitching on the way. Alex Wood makes his pro debut last night with 2 shutout innings and 4 K’s. Wood is on the fast track, already starting at Rome. Looks like he could be in the AZ fall league and up to AA next year.

Don’t know if it would take those 3 to get Greinke. Greinke is from Orlando, FL and would like to play in the South. Since, TB can’t afford him, that leaves Miami and Atlanta.

I love the way Fredi asks the players’ opinions about what to do. That would be okay if the manager’s slot wasn’t filled. Pathetic. Don’t want to be a Nancy, because the Braves are capable of playing this level of baseball consistently. They just need a leader to expect and demand it from them.

Great game Bravos!! Finally good to see the bats working. Lets start a roll, and put some distance on our record. Wow, maybe Freddie does read these. Seemed to take a pass on the first pitch. Worked out good. Keep it up.

“I think any pitcher if you’re given a four-run lead, if you can’t make that hold up, you really haven’t done your job.” — Tim Hudson.

Wow! That was a shot across the bow of Mike Minor and Randall Delgado, and frankly since both pitchers had the Braves score four runs and lose both games versus the Red Sox, I have to believe that the always aware Hudson knew precisely what this quote truly meant inside the locker room.

Folks, the two very talented rookie pitchers just got called out by the wise and talented veteran.

Hudson, told it straight. He got a lead and threw strikes, challenging the hitter to hit their way on base and not altering that approach if a few managed to do so. Minor and Delgado need to both be forced to sit down and watch video of Hudson’s performance on the mound tonight. Both have every bit of the talent that Hudson has. They just need to toughen up and throw strikes and stop acting afraid of pitching to contact.

You can just imagine the Braves sitting at the restaurant table getting ready to order…before Fredi can order what he wants, he has to ask, “Huddy, what do you think I should eat?” “Oh, whatever I want? Ok, I’ll ask someone else….Bourny? Prady? Freemy? Simmsy? Uggly? Let’s see, who am I forhetting?…Oh yea…Heyward…I always forget about him.”

Well said, David. And Fredi’s comment concerning Freeman, “If he keeps doing that he won’t be in the seventh spot very long…” Dude, are you kidding me? It takes Heyward an entire month of ripping balls to earn him the opportunity to move up in the order, but only ONE night of softly-hit liners and bloopers for Freeman?

Fredi said in another link: “Just to put our three best hitters right now together, the guys that are swinging the bats and getting on base and keep the line moving” Gonzalez said of his rationale of putting Michael Bourn, Heyward and Martin Prado in the top three spots.

What about Simmons BA .338? How about:

[1] Bourn
[2] Simmons
[3] Prado
[4] Heyward
[5] Chipper
[6] Freeman
[7] Uggla

Kind of like Nevada Roy’s lineup. Go with the hot hands! Although Simmons is a great bad ball hitter, I think he understands he is the “new guy”, and is doing well at lower end of batting order. Runs come from there, too! It’s now always where in the lineup, but how. I think Freddie is slowly figuring it out.

This may come as a shock but good leaders/managers always get input from their troops, particularly veterans. In 26 years in the military, I learned that even an 18 year old kid off the farm might have had a life experience I could use to the unit’s advantage.

Hudson did not change the delivery that resulted in his Tommy John surgery. His replacement tendon has no blood flow so it will go faster than his ligament did. Trade him now while he has some value.

Great game last night. Great article. The usual complaining on the blog. Fredi’s doing great with the injuries and issues of youth. As for Hudson sending a message to other starters, I bet its nothing new. He’s in the dugout with these guys every day and players talk, especially younger players taping the minds of vets.

@O’flarity’s water bottle: not sure about blaming McDowell for all these problems. if we do, then we can also blame him for Huddy’s back issues. and i think Huddy’s comments are spot on: if your offense gives you a lead and you can’t hold on to it, then you haven’t done your job. Minor and Delgado (even Jurrjens) should take that to heart.

I am very torn at the moment regarding the Braves. As presently constructed, I just do not feel the Braves can contend for a World Series title. There are too many question marks with the starting pitching, and the hitting can often be feast or famine. Plus, the team has the psychological baggage of last season’s collapse and an extensive history of post season failure.

Yet, I am excited about many parts of the Braves. They have a dynamic lead off hitter this season and several possible future all stars in Heyward, Freeman, and Simmons. Prado is a great asset, and I think that great contributions can be made this season by past all stars Chipper and McCann. If Uggla can go on a tear like he did last year, this lineup is pretty darn explosive.

I have been of the mindset that the Braves need to start rebuilding with youth and should consider trading off such players like Bourn (only because he is likely going elsewhere next year), Uggla, McCann, and Hudson before July 31. Today, I wonder if maybe the team should instead try to land a frontline starter, especially Greinke. He would cost alot, but maybe they should consider trading Tehran or Delgado (hopefully not both) for a title run now. The National League is completely up for grabs in my opinion. Have I completely lost my mind?

Tumbledown you’ve fallen down too hard and you can’t get up! Yesterday’s lineup did
look fine with me and when Dan starts up again it will be awesome! Also, right now we are starting to like the standings. IF (big if) we can continue along and hit the ball and get something good to happen with our pitching we will be fine. We can be a contender!
Go Braves!

I know what’s wrong with Dan Uggla. Any Mom can spot the problem.
He’s constipated.

DoninAcworth: But, can we be a WORLD SERIES contender without another frontline starter? I am not sold on Jurrjens being able to replace Beachy’s production, and I fear that Hanson will once again wear down. Maybe Medlen can provide some good starting pitching down the line, although he is invaluable as a long reliever.

I just saw where Liberty Media was awarded nearly a billion dollars in a lawsuit with another company. You think they will spend a little bit of it on the Braves? Probably not. That company is swimming in money but want spend much of it on the Braves. Braves fans should boycott buying anything from QVC until they show some kind of commitment to the team or sell it.

@reckingnutt, that WAS deep….. you and lobo can go back to sleep now….

Uggla is a career 250 with 30 hr,s in a good year unless he runs into pitchers who keep it low and away, think slider then he’s about a 190 hitter…

Tumbledown, I don’t think you’ve lost your mind. No one in the National League is running away from the pack. It’d be hard to identify a favorite at this point. The Cardinals, at full strength, probably have the most balanced team, but they’ve been highly inconsistent. It makes sense for the Braves to do something bold at the deadline.

I just don’t know if Greinke is the guy I want. I usually value talent over intangibles, but Greinke is known for being a psychological basketcase. Given the Braves’ already shaky makeup, I’m not sure that’s the kind of guy we should be pursuing, though I see why he’s a tantalizing option.

I think the safer play would be Matt Garza. He’s not quite as talented as Greinke but is very consistent and, as far as we know, emotionally stable.
