Interesting numbers, Brian in SC. There’s so much mediocrity in baseball this year, especially in the NL. The Dodgers and Nationals are far from great teams. It’s still all there for the Braves’ taking if they can figure it out. I don’t see anyone in the Senior Circuit who’s signficantly better, which is more of an indictment of the NL than it is a compliment of the Braves.

I love Chipper and appreciate all that he’s done in his career with the Braves and never thought I’d say this, but enough is enough. He signed a contract to play baseball, not take three or four days off a week. If he’s too hurt to play a reasonable number of games, he should do the right thing and go to the house. Between his situation and the erratic pitching from the two young starters, it seems this team is always in chaos.

HI all
Kind of hate to say it, but she has a good point. CHIPPER should know when you are 40 years old there will be general soreness at times, suck it up and play some games. All he had to do is PH 4 times Sunday. If he does not honestly believe he can help the team in the second half of season he should call it a day and season.
The more I think about possible moves that the team might make at the deadline, the more I think the Braves will do absolutely nothing… which may end up being a good thing.
I don’t see them having the chips to deal for Garza or Dempster… we all know that Teheran and Delgado aren’t going anywhere, and I doubt the Cubs would want minor or JJ.
I also don’t see them dealing for Willingham. He’s inexpensive and having a great season… why would the Twins want to trade him? Would make zero sense, especially for the package Wren is likely to offer (nothing of much value, in other words).
There might be a move made for a bench bat or a bullpen arm, but I don’t really see the team being in on any of the big name, high-impact players that will be made available. Not now, with the team heading into a major period of flux with Chipper leaving and other guys in the final years of their deals.
Again, might not be a bad thing to stand pat and let the chips fall where they may. If Fredi would wake up and move BMac out of the 3rd spot, if guys in rotation can put together back to back decent starts, etc… the team might be ok.
Jimmy, even filling out the rosters just based on “most deserved,” I still have a hard time finding a spot for Prado. Would you put him ahead of Ryan Braun, Carlos Gonzalez, or Melky Cabrera? What about Beltran, Stanton, or Ethier? He might have a better shot getting onto the roster as an infielder.
I should have said the seven teams that AREN’T are the Mariners, Royals, Twins, Astros, Rockies, Cubs, and Padres.
On which of those might the Braves practice a little thievery?
Royals for Frenchy… Twins for Willingham, nothing from the Astros, nothing from the Rockies, Cubs maybe a pitcher, but unlikely, Padres for Quentin. Other than that, there isn’t much to steal.
bat masterson I thought JJ’s interview Saturday was interesting. I didn’t catch it all but it seemed he was saying he did not take his offseason training seriously. I got the impression he was beating up on himself pretty hard.
yeah, he had a tone of a guy who sounded like he had been humbled by the game.
The more I think about possible moves that the team might make at the deadline, the more I think the Braves will do absolutely nothing… which may end up being a good thing.
Agree. No need to “risk it” on a team that’s been snakebit with injuries and always seems to be missing someone or having someone off their game. The future is ahead of us. Don’t blow it away for a chance. This team just isn’t the same without BB, and so IMO, a trade that doesn’t give us a good player for next year, maybe 2 more years, is a waste.
Yeah, Pluoffe was a career .250 hitter in the minors until last year, when he hit .313. He doesn’t have a nice track record, but it’s possible he just figured it out.
A 7-3 homestand is something to shoot for. Anything less than that will feel like a disappointment, I think. The last four games are against the Cubbies.
The Braves don’t have much of a chance if they don’t start making hay at home. 10-game homestand right now is a great opportunity.
Yes, we’ve got to start winning at home. 15-17 @ home right now. Let’s try to get it to 21-19 or 22-18 by the end of this homestand.
I think you forgot to carry a 1 somewhere…
Hold on, let me check your math. Ok, the team currently sits at 15-17 at home. They’ve got a 10 game homestand coming up… and… well, let’s see, take 5 and add it to… and then take 5 and…
Nope, you got it right. Looked off, but yeah, a good homestand and we’re sitting pretty at 2 games over .500 in Turner Field.
One night a few years ago, a couple of friends and I were night-fishing on an area lake. I was standing in the front of the boat as we trolled through a cove when without warning, the motor caught a stump. I lost my balance and fell out: “Plouffe!”…to the bottom of the lake I went.
The Braves need to trade for a #1 starting pitcher if one can be had. I don’t see Atlanta making the wild card slots with what we are trotting out there right now. Bourn and Prado are basically carrying this team with a resurgent Heyward helping of late. We all know it starts with pitching and well we have promising young arms but nothing that helps conjure up visions of consistency. Wren will get a top pitcher I am certain, otherwise we better start hitting the crap out of the ball.
I’d like to see Delgado and Minor start off with just using their fastballs and establishing that pitch exclusively to start with. I’ve seen too many games where by the 2nd or 3rd hitter in the 1st inning they are into their 3rd best pitch and they haven’t even proved they can spot their fastballs yet. Look at what JJ did the other night and it was all setup by contolling his fastball, then he mixed in the other pitches as the game progressed. These guys are getting beat on their 2nd and 3rd best pitches. They are having to go to their 2nd and 3rd best pitches in an effort to find something they can throw for strikes and when they do they get hammered. Both those guys could (I believe) just throw their fastballs 1st time and perhaps even 2nd time through the order and do well if they could work both sides of the plate at the knees for strikes and get ahead of the hitter., name of the game…get ahead of the hitter and make him swing at something that isn’t even a strike…Braves hitters do it all the time.
there’s still time to turn around this home record, but if we can’t win @ home that is troubling. Esp since the winner of the wild-card playoff game gets “home field advantage” (the first 2 games are at home) in the NLDS!
Doesn’t matter if a team struggles at home, if it is cleaning up on road. Let WAS win the division to secure away-field advantage till NLCS and ask Uggla to make sure in AS game that away-field advantage is secured for WS
Murph wants them to hit the equivalent of a five-run dinger and get that home record squared away IMMEDIATELY.
A five run dinger would only bring the team to within 3 or 4 runs, though… nope, I need to use a X2 Grand Slam powerup if this team is going to be in ballgames.
Remember a few years back when Sabathia got traded to the Brewers and pretty much got that team into the playoffs all by himself? Pitched on short rest, pitched on no rest, and dominated just about every team he faced.
The Braves need that kind of starter. A true blue number one starter… an ace… a go-to guy… scrapy… gritty… clutch…
Braves are on pace for 46-47 road wins (34-35 losses)
Braves are on pace for 37-38 home wins (43-44 losses)
This puts them on a pace for 85 wins (max). They need to step it up at home a little, or really start killing it on the road (where they already have a .575 winning %.
Hillbilly, I used to wear my hair kinda long. I always hated it when it was real rainy and humid outside. My hair would plouffe up so bad I’d have to wear a cap.
Started in January. Boss was freaking out all morning. (Always going nuts) Were doing a elevator shaft and are on the 2nd floor of the building. We boom the box of mud up to the floor and I have my buckets ready and have my shovel. I start to fill the buckets up and he runs in front of me grabs a bucket (screaming we don’t have F’n God damn time to take care of masons) and scoops the mud out and dumps it it the other bucket. Filled the 8 gallon bucket to the top…. We I have to pass these buckets up over our heads to another guy… So I got hyped up and said well F it then… Tried passing it up and couldn’t it was too heavy so I slammed it down, said i’m not F’n passing full buckets up over my head…. He started cursing and going bonkers…. The boss’s son started shoveling the mud… I snatched the shovel and chucked it out of the building all the way to the ground.
But I’m happy, it was a dead end job. The most unorganized company I’ve ever worked for or seen. We get paid bottom dollar wages and are expected to do everything and do it extremely fast. The boss (foreman/owner) you can’t understand what he says most of the time cause he rambles so many things and every other word is mother F’er and god damn.. Work hard for the man and he doesn’t appreciate it one bit. We never have enough help, his son who is one of the labors only works 2 or 3 days a week and comes in 2-3 hours late every time and leaves whenever he wants.
There is just much more I can say but I won’t. I’m just really happy this finally happened.
In any event (and Plouffe notwithstanding), Braves have five-plus weeks before the deadline. Targeted players might get hurt, current pitchers might step up, all sorts of circumstances might arise that either lessen or increase the urgency for a trade.
I took French for one semester in high school. I hated it. Didn’t study, didn’t pay attention in class.
One day the teacher was going over some vocabulary words and was calling on students to give the French translations of items found around the house.
I had my head down, hiding behind the girl in front of me, hoping I wouldn’t get called on. I must have been daydreaming because, next thing I knew, the girl next to me was waving leaning over and nudging my arm. I looked at her and she pointed up to the teacher, who was staring at me with a quizzical look on her face.
I said “Sorry, I didn’t hear the question.” to which she responded “Ah ah ah, en francais s’il vous plait.”
I had no idea what she had said… people were now turning around in their desk, waiting for me to answer the question. I looked around, nervous, and finally just belted out “Plouffe?”
The entire class gasped. The teacher dropper her book and stared at me, turning very red. A girl 2 rows over started to gag and ran from the room.
After a meeting with my parents that afternoon it was decided that I would switch to German after my 5 day suspension was over.
If I were JJ, I’d be wondering why I got sent down if Minor and Delgado can pitch like they did Saturday and Sunday and stay up. ‘Cause lets face it, either or both of them are as bad as JJ was at the beginning of the season. I truly hope it was leg strength and now that he’s got that worked up, he’ll be back to the pre-All-Star JJ from 2011.
It seemed like Minor pitched his best when he was one start away from being sent down. Funny how that has worked. As soon as Medlen was put back in the bullpen and Minor’s spot was “safe”…here we go again. He needs to find inward motivation to keep that fire lit.
bravegirl4life ‘Cause lets face it, either or both of them are as bad as JJ was at the beginning of the season
actually i dont think so. minor and delgado actually look like they know what they are doing sometimes. even the last two starts, when they got lit up, they didnt look nearly as bad as JJ did to start this season.
Bat, the trip to the movies went very, very well. As we left, I asked the 4 year old if she was feeling ok. The kid was quiet, at her popcorn, didn’t ask any questions, laughed at the funny parts… it was shocking.
I highly recommend Brave to anyone with kids, although the bear in the story was pretty frightening. Gave the 6 year old nightmares for the last 2 nights in a row.
Targeted players might get hurt, current pitchers might step up, all sorts of circumstances might arise that either lessen or increase the urgency for a trade.
30 games until 4pm, 7/31. Plenty of time to figure out what we need. Heck, maybe some semblance of a starting rotation will form by then…..
actually i dont think so. minor and delgado actually look like they know what they are doing sometimes
This. The 2 of them have put together some good outings and consecutive innings. Minor’s had some starts where he looks great, Delgado as well. Heck, even in Minor’s blowups, he looks good for 3/4/5 innings until that point. JJ wasn’t doing that at the beginning of the year. He looked bad and was bad. Nothing good about it, and no way to sugarcoat it.
Minor’s last three starts have been against the Yankees, Yankees, and Red Sawx. Let him get a start against the vaunted Nats offense. His ERA will be back under 3.50 on the blink of an eye.
the biggest move the braves can do is be consistent. No more losing 8-9 games in a row just go out and play good consistent baseball. The braves have a hard time scoring runs lets face it but If dredi can start to play small ball once in a while it might help in getting some runs on the board…. Just my opinion….. GO Braves!!!!
He needs to find inward motivation to keep that fire lit.
Honestly, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with his competitive desire. Kid wants to compete and he wants to win, I don’t think there is much doubt. But the unraveling-inning has happened enough now that he might be self-fulfilling the scenario. It’s not as if the kid doesn’t know that he’s having trouble managing innings, after all, not as if he doesn’t try to work on reversing that. He has just very little experience to draw on, and even less that lets him think, “No problem, Been here before, no big deal. Make some pitches, get back in the dugout.”
Chicken-and-egg…to get the confidence that he can damage-control those innings, he actually has to do it with some regularity. I certainly don’t know the answer for him. But he’ll either figure it out or he won’t.

I said during ST 85 wins this year, THANK YOU FREDI ! It should have been more.
Time for Mr. Wren to make his defining move. He has to trade for Zack Grienke and then sign him for five or six seasons. Wren’s G. Maddux move… Rotation of Grienke, Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, (Beachy)Medlin wins the NL East this season and competes for 5-10 years maybe. Trade two of Minor, Delgado, Teheran, Gilmartin and Pastornicky, with the untraded pitchers available to replace Medlin in the pen. Gearen available to sweeten the trade. (Grienke is from Apopka, FL, about 40 miles from Pearson, FL — he would love to close out Chipper’s career here with the Braves, and then ride the wave into his next contract with the Braves.)
Minor’s last three starts have been against the Yankees, Yankees, and Red Sawx.
And he looked great in one of his Yankee starts, was decent in his other Yankee start, and was good for 3 innings against the Red Sox. He might be turning it around, but let him have a chance against some NL competition…
No way Greinke doesn’t go to free agency. He’s been waiting for this. Not sure where that crazy kid is signing, but he’ll want to be a free agent, it seems.
Minor has had plenty of chances. The problem is that one good start every four outings isn’t going to cut it. I understand that he’s young, but of this team truly wants to contend, they can’t have both Minor and Delgado in the rotation. They’re just way too inconsistent at this point in their careers, and it seems worse because they pitch back to back.

Royals for Frenchy… Twins for Willingham, nothing from the Astros, nothing from the Rockies, Cubs maybe a pitcher, but unlikely, Padres for Quentin. Other than that, there isn’t much to steal.

Trade two of Minor, Delgado, Teheran, Gilmartin and Pastornicky, with the untraded pitchers available to replace Medlin in the pen. Gearen available to sweeten the trade.
