Chipper: Been a struggle getting back in swing after layoff

NEW YORK – The Braves needed Tuesday’s 4-3 win against the Yankees in the worst way, and Jason Heyward, Andrelton Simmons and four relievers did most of the heavy lifting to assure they got it.

But Chipper Jones also had a couple of big plays, including an RBI double and a nice play on a catch and throw to the plate to help Jonny Venters get out of a seventh-inning jam, with the 4-3 lead intact. That play helped offset an error charged to Jones that let in the tying run in the fourth, on a hard-hit ball that could’ve gone either way (hit or error) but a play Jones said he should have made.

A play he might have made earlier in the season, before a one-hop grounder smashed off his lower left leg on May 18, the impact of which gradually turned his lower leg into one massive, grotesquely discolored and swollen bruise that eventually required surgery to drain and landed him on the DL.

The 40-year-old hasn’t been the same since he got back from the injury, which is why last night’s RBI double – his first extra-base hit and RBI in a month – was so welcome for the Braves and for Jones.

“I’ve suffered consequences because of [the injury and DL time] here over the last week,” said Jones, who is 5-for-28 (.179) with four singles, four walks, one RBI and two errors in eight games since coming off the DL. “I think I’m hitting somewhere around .200 since I came back. But it’s coming. And when it does I’ll get back in the swing of things.

“It’s hard to get used to the speed of the game again, and it’s harder as you get older to be away from it and then come back. I’ve struggled with it up to this point.”

Unlike some injuries in his past, Jones wasn’t able to do much of anything physical during his downtime after having the leg drained.

“I didn’t pick up a bat for 16, 17 days,” he said. “It’s going to take its toll. And it’s not just offensively, it’s defensively too. I’ve made a couple of bad errors since I’ve been back. But it’ll sharpen up.”

Before that B.J. Upton ball smoked his leg just above the ankle, Jones had hit .307 (31-for-101) with five homers, 24 RBIs, a .372 OBP and .485 slugging percentage in 28 games, despite missing the first four games while on the DL recovering from knee surgery late in spring training.

He was having the farewell season he had dreamed of, making the most of his at-bats and helping the Braves stay at the top of the division standings.

The Upton one-hopper and his second DL stint in two months changed things. But Jones is still confident in his abilities and thinks he can help the Braves aim for the goals he and they had entering the season.

He’ll be honored by the Yankees in a presentation before today’s series finale at new Yankee Stadium. Jones isn’t in the lineup, because manager Fredi Gonzalez decided to rest him today so he’d get back-to-back rest days (the Braves don’t play Thursday) before the three-game weekend series at Boston that starts Friday.

Gonzalez had originally planned to DH Jones today, but will instead use catcher Brian McCann in that role.

Jones is available to pinch-hit, and he’d like nothing more than to top off what’s already been special few days in his final scheduled series against the Yankees. This morning he took time for a special tour of the Yankees museum that’s in the palatial stadium, including featured exhibits of his boyhood idol Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth.

“That was really cool,” Jones said. “You saw a 40-year-old kid just in awe of the history that I was witnessing, whether it was holding Mickey Mantle’s bat or holding Babe Ruth’s bat, or seeing baseball cards from the olden days. You know what I mean? So much memorabilia and paraphernalia that really takes me back to my childhood, because my dad had a Mickey Mantle bat in his closet that I always used to pick up as a kid. And I used to think, man, this is big, how you ever going to hit with this? Now I pick it up and it’s like, yeah, I could hit with this.”

He said it was uncanny to see the similarities between his career and that of the great switch-hitter Mantle, whose career was hampered greatly in the latter years by injury. Jones saw a picture of Mantle being carried off the field after blowing out a knee.

Jones said he wasn’t aware the Yankees were planning a tribute to him until this morning. He’s been honored with gifts and/or video tributes in every ballpark where the Braves have made their only scheduled visit this season, including by American League teams at Tampa Bay and now the Yankees.

“From my standpoint it’ll be really special,” Jones said. “Whatever they plan on doing, I’ll be extremely grateful.”

Yankees Derek Jeter and Andruw Jones, Chippers’ former long-time Braves teammate, presented him with third base from Tuesday night’s game, in a glass case. The P.A. announcer called Jones “one of the great switch-hitters of our time” and said maybe he’d be back at Yankee Stadium to play in the World Series.

• Putting up zeroes: Since May 8, two Braves relievers have made a total of 34 appearances without giving up a run. Craig Kimbrel, you folks might have expected to be one. But a month ago, how many of you would have guessed Chad Durbin would be the other?

Durbin has made 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8, allowing six hits and an .122 opponents’ average in 15-1/3 innings during that stretch, with five walks and 16 strikeouts. This after posting an 8.25 ERA and .327 opponents’ average in his first 14 outings this season.

For the season, he’s .228 overall opponents’ average includes .225 against lefty hitters and .230 against righties. With runners in scoring position, he’s held hitter to a .167 average (5-for-30).

“He’s been the guy that’s held it together down there when some of us were struggling,” Jonny Venters said.

And Kimbrel? He’s back to being as dominant as he was as a rookie in 2011, or even more so in recent weeks.

The closer has 15 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8, converting 11 consecutive save opportunities in that stretch and allowing just three hits (3-for-49, .061) with two walks and 24 strikeouts in 15 innings. Yes, that’s three hits, two walks and 24 strikeouts.

• Let’s close with a tune from a guy I know to be one of Chipper’s biggest fans, Jason Isbell, off his terrific album from last year, Here We Rest. You can hear the song by clicking here.

jason isbell

“GO IT ALONE” by Jason Isbell

Are you lonely tonight?
Are you out on the road?
I’m headed home to go it alone again.
Are you dreaming out loud?
Scared of the crowds?
I’m headed home to go it alone again.

It’s realizing just how close you’ve come to death.
and rearranging accordingly.
I’m realizing what I’ve lost and what I’ve left
and taking it home to go it alone again.

Find me a place
With salt on the roads
I’ll do what I’m told, and buy what I’m sold again.
She was enough
but that was never enough.
The wound that won’t heal
is pain I can’t feel again.

In real life these things don’t happen much at all.
Too bad we all live the dream.
I’m realizing just how far I had to fall
and taking it home to go it alone again.

In real life these things don’t happen much at all.
Too bad we all live the dream.
I’m realizing just how far I had to fall
and taking it home to go it alone again.

I’m taking it home to go it alone again.
Taking it home to go it alone again.

DOB how is Fransisco in the clubhouse? Is he a good team guy or what? The only reason he is still in the majors cannot be that he is out of options. Average glove, and sub par bat. The only pitches I have actually seen him hit have been way down and in. I know we gave up a decent lefty to get him but the ‘no options’ bit is getting outrageous. He is a minor league 3rd baseman.

If Braves are able to resign Bourn , move Prado to 3B and sign Swisher to play LF with all other positions status quo, they might have a fairly solid lineup in 2013. Then the question mark becomes whether they will strengthen the bench and maybe add a top shelf starting pitcher.

JoeFan,

I think Swisher will be out of the Braves price range, especially if they sign Bourn. Swisher’s making 10+ mil, and he’ll be 32 at the start of next season, so he’s going to go for a long term contract with as much cash as he can get. This could be his last one.

Shaun

Shaun we should look at some that actually measure things that lead to scoring…runs.

Like RBI?

Sure, on a team level. But an individual hitter getting an RBI doesn’t necessarily indicate that that hitter is the player who did the heavy lifting to create the run. Kind of like pitcher wins. If a pitcher doesn’t get wins, it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s bad. And if a pitcher wins a lot of games, it doesn’t mean he is a good pitcher. We need to be aware of who does the heavy lifting and what the heavy lifting entails. Far too many don’t even understand what leads to preventing and creating runs, much less which players do the things that lead to the creating and preventing of runs.

He’s the most productive hitter and it’s not all that close. His performance with runners on, with runners in scoring position, with runners on third is even better than his overall numbers.

MikeInFl, why not? Isn’t it the way many want to do it? Assign value and judge players’ skills on the basis of picking out some random statistics, without regard to whether they are measuring things that lead to creating and preventing runs? Baseball isn’t about scoring more runs and preventing more runs than your opponent. It’s a beauty contest, about which players have the prettiest batting averages or RBI totals.

BravesQueen

BG4Life — Jason is probably thinking of that catch…but likely the reason Bourn can get up so much higher to make that catch is that there is so much less of him to get off the ground than Jason. :D

Right now Durbin and Medlen are his only dependable RH middle relievers. I think he scared to death to put CMart in there but may have to if we get another run or two.

No Shaun, I don’t think that’s how “many want to do it.” One guy, who is upset that Dan Uggla is not as good a hitter as Joey Votto, uses batting average as a measure. Okay, he’s unenlightened. Probably doesn’t spend 6 hours a day studying baseball.

3. Allows 1 homer
4. Finally makes a change after a 2nd.

Guy just lets the game come to him. And now we have a Venters sighting in the SIXTH inning. This game typifies the button-pushing chaos under this guy. He could have shaken hands with Hanson after five — now we have a game.

Heyward will be very special as will Freeman. I like this lineup in 2013 if we can sign Bourn and find a LF to spell Prado when he moves permanently to 3rd base. Chipper will get his swing back and end the season around .290. Our pitching without Beachy is a huge question mark.

Before anybody gives Fredi too much credit, the Braves have scored today in spite of his lineup. Our #3 hitter, the “Designated Hitter,” sports a .235 average and is 0-for-4 with 2 K’s. Meanwhile, our #9 hitter, our “other” catcher, is batting .286 for the year and has 2 hits. I doubt there are too many teams playing today with a DH batting under .250. It’s a good thing we don’t play by minor league rules for most of the year!

Constanza?

How about Luis Durango. Dude is having a very nice season in Gwinnett. Not to mention that he’s faster than Constanza, has a better arm and range in the outfield. The Panamaniac is also doing the two things the Braves wanted to see him accomplish, 13 extra base hits of out 75 total. Which means Durango is hitting the ball to the outfield with authority. Second…Durango is 27 out of 35 in the stolen base department while hitting .283 with an OBP of .343.

The old-school book says to put your best high-average hitter here. The lead-off hitter should already be in scoring position and a hit drives him in. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.

The Book says the #3 hitter comes to the plate with, on average, fewer runners on base than the #4 or #5 hitters. So why focus on putting a guy who can knock in runs in the #3 spot, when the two spots after him can benefit from it more? Surprisingly, because he comes to bat so often with two outs and no runners on base, the #3 hitter isn’t nearly as important as we think. This is a spot to fill after more important spots are taken care of.

Another way to look at things is to order the batting slots by the leveraged value of the out. In plain English (sort of), we want to know how costly making an out is by each lineup position, based on the base-out situations they most often find themselves in, and then weighted by how often each lineup spot comes to the plate. Here’s how the lineup spots rank in the importance of avoiding outs:

#1, #4, #2, #5, #3, #6, #7, #8, #9

So, you want your best three hitters to hit in the #1, #4, and #2 spots. Distribute them so OBP is higher in the order and SLG is lower. Then place your fourth and fifth best hitters, with the #5 spot usually seeing the better hitter, unless he’s a high-homerun guy. Then place your four remaining hitters in decreasing order of overall hitting ability, with basestealers ahead of singles hitters. Finally, stop talking like the lineup is a make-or-break decision.

For all the nitty gritty details, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of The Book, which goes into even greater detail about the strategy of lineup construction, including platoons, separating lefties in the lineup, strikeouts, avoiding GIDPs, and preventing the pitcher from hitting.

Faster than Constanza? Seriously doubt that, and he damn sure ain’t nearly as successful as a base stealer over their careers….

Not really. Constanza hit .286 while Durango is batting .283, Constanza stole 9 bases compared to Durango’s 27, as for speed, I can’t argue with nolie’s ignorance other than to say that one of the two speedsters has been clocked at 4.2 seconds in the 40…which is NFL wide out caliber.

Heyward has put up monster numbers in his career when batting 6th (960+OPS). His second best spot in batting 2nd (780 OPS). Every other spot he’s produced under a 700 OPS.

Also during his great rookie season he only batted in the 6th hole 13 times so. so its not like his numbers are padded in the spot from 2 years ago.. When batting 6th this season Heyward completely mashes, and even last season which was horrible overall he still produced a 760 OPS in the spot.

about the lineup, in reality, it doesn’t really matter as long as your top 3 OBP guys are hitting 1 2 and 3, (and increase in slugging as you progress)

You would rather put the high K high reward guys 4-6 and then fill the other two spots in diminishing fashion. “The Book” is probably right hen it comes to optimization, but the game isn’t played optimally really. But it’s rules of lineups ,roughly followed, will help a team score more runs I believe.

With Prado moving to 3rd our infield is set for a year or two or three. With Bourne probably gone we need two ourfielders.. Need to get one now in a trade. Option, trade or release Diaz (I like Matt be he’s not cutting it! Chipper needs to DH all 3 games in Boston and sit out every 3rd game against NL.

Sad, but not surprised to hear the Beachy news. Glad they’re not going to prolong the agony. Get r done and see you next year.

I have low hopes for Jurrjens as well, but you’ve got to give him his shot and see whether he has anything. If he stinks it up, you can release him and move on. If he starts to return to his old self, you look like a genius.

By the way, for Monday’s line up construction, do you use career statistics to determine your best five hitters? Only the 2012 season numbers? The last nine games?

Yeah. It is impossible to know who your best offensive performers are going to be on any one day, but you can reasonably guess. The other challenge is distinguishing between the 3rd-7th best hitters on your time. Most teams will have a guy who is obviously the best and a total bum at the plate, but there is probably very little separation between a lot of the other guys.

I just re-read what i wrote and it’s wrong.

if you leave say 2nd year and come back 3rd year, then you should pickup counting the games for your 2nd year then (and say 90 games is a season as far as advancement goes to next service year)
so Beachy was in 63 games in 2012, when he comes back in 2013, he would pick back up and unless he reached 27 games for 2013, he wouldn’t increase his service year, but would instead remain at the year he left.

1st year – played all games
2nd year – 63 games
3rd yr- 24 games
4th year is considered the 3rd year of “service time” as far as arbitration is concerned

George, I open to the possibility that he has read The Book (and other research on batting order) and can refute the authors’ points about batting order, one-by-one. I would just like to see it in order to determine if I should change my views on batting order. Because if one can lay out a compelling counter-argument, I’m certainly opened to changing my views. I just need something convincing, that’s all. I don’t think that’s too much to ask, a compelling case as to why we should view batting order one way versus another.

All indications are that on average the number three hitter will come up with fewer runners on than the numbers 4 and 5 slots, and leads off the fewest innings.

That swing that Heyward put on that second homerun was awesome. It was very Chipper-esque. We have seen plenty of times how Chipper will simply put BAT on BALL. You don’t have to take a massive swing every time at the plate. Sometimes it’s just a matter of making solid contact and you can still hit home runs–in any area of the ballpark.

Jason Heyward is so big and so strong he could literally foul a ball off over the opposite field fence. He needs to quit thinking that every at bat needs to be a great one. A hit is a hit no matter how they fall. Just put the bat on the ball!

As soon as he learns to adjust his swing according to the situation, the pitcher, the at bat, and even the count, he will be a great one. That swing he took against a lefthander was great.

Congrats Jason!

Have you ever managed a real team or played in a real baseball game? Constanza is what happens when Frank Wren can’t pull his head out of his butt hole. Example, who is the Red Sox fourth outfielder?

Scott Podsednik. Who by the way could have been picked up in the off season for a bag of baseballs. He signed a minor league contract with the Philies who then traded him to the Sox for cash.

Podsednik is what he is, a proven veteran fourth outfielder who comes off the bench when needed. Which is how the Sox are utilizing the guy, and the reason why the podfather is hitting .387 in his part time role.

While we are stuck with the likes of Constanza…..which brings to bear to poor roster construction done by Frank Wren.

I didn’t put unreasonable expectations on him, Nick. I’m just telling you people did.

Mine were he should have hit second or third to start the year last year. Then he got hurt and things changed.

Struggling is one thing. Getting completely away from what had made him the hitter he had been is another.

I must admit, the Frank Wren hate amuses me as it is misguided and seems to always omit the great trades he has made

I completely agree. I like Fredi, but I can understand why people are upset with him. And I think that given our attendance, we could do a lotworse than Liberty’s $90ish million, but I still understand why people would be unhappy with them.

But these people who are dead set on seeing Wren gone….I don’t get that. The man’s been a wizard with trades, and he’s kept a strong core of players while on a limited budget. And yet some people want to scapegoat him to the death.

He was walking more earlier. He had a stretch with 10, or 11 walks in 10 games I think. I think scoots had it right the other day when he said Heyward wants to hit. The more he hits the more carefully he will be pitched and I would imagine he will take his walks.

MADISON, S.D. (AP) — From the moment 73-year-old Carl Ericsson rang his old high school classmate’s doorbell in January, verified the man’s identity and then shot him dead, the question had been what prompted him to confront a man he hadn’t even spoken to in years.
The startling answer, a prosecutor said Friday, was a 1950s locker room humiliation that festered in Ericsson’s mind for a half-century.

Had water thrown at me in the first inning… very nice fans (sarcasm).. but what they didn’t know is it actually felt good since it was sweltering hot. Out of all the sporting events (college basketball and football and Braves baseball) that I go travel to as the away team that was the first time something was thrown. There’s always heckling but usually not something physical.. even if it was just water. Anyway, left with the win so that was great. Had a great time at today’s game.
